Every showroom owner wants the fragrance to be the first thing a visitor meets, so the machine goes by the door. And the first thing the visitor meets is the street, because the door is open. The entrance is where people arrive and where air leaves. The machine belongs deeper in.
Quick answers — read this first
Should a scent machine go near the entrance or deeper inside an appliance showroom? Deeper inside, always. The entrance is a threshold whose air is exchanged with the street or mall every time the door opens, and a source placed there releases into air that is leaving; the doorway still smells of outside and the reception desk beside it is over-scented. Mounted inward - high on a wall the AC supply crosses, past the threshold zone - the same machine lets the register be met at the first display, which is where a first impression is actually made.

But surely the visitor should smell it as they walk in? They will, a few steps in, which is the right moment: noticed at the first display, forgotten by the specification table. A fragrance met on the doormat competes with the street and is gone before it registers; a fragrance met at the first kitchen reads as the building, not as a product. Nothing is lost by placing inward except the doorway, which was never going to hold it.

Which machine, and what does it cost? One SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for a connected floor of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft, waterless, wall-mounted inward on the supply side, timer and key-lock. A Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness reed at Rs 749-849 on the far side of the desk for a studio. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music - SOSA makes no claim that it changes dwell time, footfall or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance.
The short answer
Short answer: deeper inside, always. The entrance is a draught whose air leaves every time the door opens; a source there feeds the street and over-scents the desk. Mount inward, high on the wall the supply crosses, past the threshold zone, and let the register be met at the first display.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) wall-mounted inward for a connected floor of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft; a Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) or Morning Freshness reed (₹749) on the far side of the desk for a studio under about 750 sq ft. Nothing by the door.
Next step: send a plan with the door, the first display and the AC grilles marked - ask for a showroom scenting plan and we will mark the inward wall.

Straight answer
Should the scent machine go near the entrance or deeper inside the showroom?
Deeper inside, and the answer does not change with the floor plan, the machine or the register. It is worth saying why, because the instinct to put it by the door is strong and comes from a good place - the owner wants the fragrance to be part of the welcome. Here is what the entrance actually is. It is the one wall of the building that opens, and every time it does the air within three to five metres of it is exchanged with whatever is outside: a street, a mall concourse, a car park. That is not a fault of the door; it is what doors do, and constantly opening glass doors works through the mechanism. A scent machine at the entrance is therefore releasing into air that is queuing to leave. Some of its output goes out with the next opening. Some pools at the reception desk, which on most floors sits beside the door, so the advisor at the desk - the person who breathes it nine hours a day - gets the strongest fragrance on the floor while the visitor walking past the desk gets the street. And the far displays, where the visitor will spend an hour, get whatever survives the journey, which is not much. The entrance is where people arrive and where air leaves. The machine belongs where the air stays. Now the objection: surely a visitor should smell it as they walk in? They should, and they will - a few steps in, at the first display, which is where a first impression is actually made. What customers should smell when they enter sets out the sequence: door, draught, accepted; first display, noticed; specification table, forgotten. A fragrance met on the doormat competes with the traffic and is gone before it registers as anything. A fragrance met at the first kitchen, with the door behind you, reads as the building. Nothing is lost by placing inward except the doorway, and the doorway was never going to hold it. So the position is this. Inward, past the threshold zone, high on the wall the AC supply grilles blow across, away from the returns - the rule from where the machine goes on a central-AC floor, with the entrance simply ruled out as one more wall the air leaves through. The wall mount on the SOSA Vaayu is what makes it possible; the socket by the door is where most machines are found and the worst place on the floor for one. On a corridor floor the inward position is chosen by thirds, which a long, narrow showroom explains. Then the level is set from the far point, not the doorway, with the team at five in the afternoon, and locked - the entrance is a daily temptation to turn it up and the key-lock is what refuses. A reed, if the floor is a studio, follows the same rule in miniature: on the far side of the desk, never on the door side, reaching its one desk zone without feeding the draught. Machine and price: one Vaayu at ₹11,999, waterless, wall-mounted inward, timer and key-lock, for a connected floor of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft; a Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness reed at the desk for a studio. And the frame: fragrance is an interiors decision, like lighting or music. SOSA makes no claim that it changes dwell time, footfall, conversion or sales, no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish, and it is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction. The live kitchen and coffee counter stay unscented. Ask for a showroom scenting plan and mark the door and the first display on what you send.

SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
A studio under ~750 sq ft - on the far side of the desk

SOSA Vaayu
The machine that leaves the door wall
SOSA Vaayu Waterless Diffuser

The five reasons the entrance is the wrong wall

Five things that are true of every showroom entrance, in the order they rule it out. Each one on its own would be enough.

1
The air leaves there
A source at the door releases into air on its way out
The entrance is the only wall of the building that opens, and every opening swaps a slab of air across the threshold. Whatever is in that air - the fragrance included - goes out with it and is replaced by the street. A machine within the threshold zone is releasing into a queue for the exit, and the visible result is a tank that empties on schedule while the doorway smells of traffic. The zone is three to five metres deep on most fronts, wider on a corner or a mall unit with an open frontage, and constantly opening glass doors gives the tissue test that shows its edge. Nothing scented is placed inside it. The Vaayu wall-mounts past it; run the cable rather than use the socket by the door, which is where nearly every wrongly placed machine in retail is found.
Test: hold a tissue a metre inside the door while someone opens it. Where it stops leaning is where the placement zone begins.
2
The desk is beside it
A source at the door over-scents the advisor, not the visitor
On most floors the reception desk sits just inside the entrance, and a machine at the door releases at desk height into the advisor's breathing space. The visitor walks past in twenty seconds; the advisor stands there nine hours. So an entrance-placed machine produces the exact inversion the plan is meant to avoid - the strongest fragrance on the floor for the person who should notice it least, and the street for everyone else. Set for the advisor: noticed at the first display, forgotten by the specification table, un-nameable at the desk, and if the team says it is too much, it is too much. Scent at reception but not across the floor is what an entrance-placed source produces on a floor of display kitchens, and how strong fragrance should be inside an experience centre is the level test the door position makes impossible to pass.
Rule: if the desk is the strongest point on the floor, the machine is at the door. Move it, then set the level again from the far end.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu wall-mounts inward, off the desk and off the door, at a level the advisor can stand beside all day.
See SOSA Vaayu →
3
The first impression is made inward
Noticed at the first display, not on the mat
The good instinct behind the door position is that the fragrance should be part of the welcome. It is - but the welcome happens a few steps in, once the door has closed behind the visitor and the street has stopped competing. That is the first display, the first kitchen, the point where a visitor stops walking and starts looking, and a fragrance met there reads as the building rather than as a product placed by the door. What customers should smell when they enter gives the ninety-second sequence: the door is a draught and is accepted, the first display is where the register is noticed, the specification table is where it is forgotten. A source mounted inward on the supply wall delivers exactly that sequence; a source at the door delivers the street, then a wall of fragrance at the desk, then nothing.
Rule: place for the first display, not for the doormat. The visitor is looking by then and not before.
4
The supply is inward too
The AC carries from the middle of the floor, not from the door wall
On most showroom floors the supply grilles run down the length or across the ceiling of the sales area, and the returns cluster near the entrance wall or the corridor to the back of house. That geometry means the door wall is doubly wrong: it is where the air leaves through the door, and it is often where the air leaves through the returns as well. The source goes on a wall the supply crosses, inward, high, so the conditioned air carries the register across the displays and towards the entrance - which means the door zone does receive a trace on its way out, and that trace is all it was ever going to hold. Where the machine goes on a central-AC floor is the grille-by-grille rule; this page adds only that the entrance is one more return. If the floor is a corridor, the inward position is the far third-point, which a long, narrow showroom explains.
Rule: the door and the returns are usually on the same wall. The machine is on a different one.
5
The level is judged inward
Never from the doorway, and locked against it
The last reason is about what the door does to the person setting the level. An owner walks in from the street, smells nothing, and turns the machine up; the doorway still smells of nothing and the floor is now over-scented. The level is judged from the far point - the specification table, the last display kitchen - at five in the afternoon with the team, and locked with the key-lock on the Vaayu, because the entrance is a standing argument for turning it up that will be made every morning by whoever opens the door. And two things the inward rule does not change: the live kitchen and coffee counter stay unscented with the machine off on the timer while a demo runs; and on the merchandise, SOSA makes no claim about what fragrance does to any appliance or finish - the product fact is that a waterless machine adds no moisture and leaves no residue wherever it is mounted.

The SOSA principle
The entrance is where the visitor arrives and where the air leaves. A machine placed there welcomes the street; a machine placed inward welcomes the visitor a few steps later, which is when they are ready to notice.
Deeper, always. High, on the supply wall, past the threshold. Judged from the far point. Locked against the door.

Step by step: what the visitor meets, from the mat to the table

Here is the visitor's walk with the machine in each of the two positions. Read across and the case for inward placement makes itself.

The SOSA comparison
The same walk with the machine at the door and with it deeper inside
Where the visitor is Machine at the door vs machine inward
On the mat, door open behind them
At the door: the street, with a wisp of fragrance leaving past them. Inward: the street. The same, because the threshold holds nothing either way.
Passing the reception desk
At the door: a wall of fragrance the advisor has been standing in all day. Inward: a trace, un-nameable, at a level the advisor set.
SOSA VaayuAt the first display, door closed behind them
At the door: fading fast. Inward: noticed - the register read as the building. One Vaayu high on the supply wall here. View →
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed DiffuserAt the specification table, an hour in
At the door: nothing. Inward: forgotten, which is correct - and where the level was judged. A Mountain Breeze at the table only in a studio. View →
At the live kitchen or coffee counter
Nothing in either case. The demonstration owns its air; machine off on the timer while a demo runs, extraction clearing afterwards.

The pages around this one meet the entrance from other directions: constantly opening glass doors is the mechanism that makes the threshold a draught, scent at reception but not across the floor is the door-socket mistake seen from the desk, and even fragrance across multiple display zones is the pillar that puts inward placement beside height and the AC path. For what the visitor should meet at the first display, what a premium appliance showroom should smell like sets the register. SOSA makes no claim that any of this affects dwell time, footfall, conversion or sales.

For the studio desk: one Mountain Breeze reed diffuser on the inward side of the desk, ₹849 for 50ml, 6-8 weeks, one desk zone - never on the door side.
Inward, high, on the supply wall - the door left to the street

Put the machine by the door and you welcome the street. Put it a few steps in and you welcome the visitor at the moment they are ready to notice.

A note from Sonal

If I could move one machine in every showroom in the country, it would be the one by the door. It is there because the socket is there and because the owner wanted the fragrance to be the welcome, and I understand both. But I have stood on enough doormats to know what the welcome actually is: the street, then the desk, then nothing. The advisor at the desk has been breathing the strongest air on the floor since opening, and the visitor has walked past it in the time it takes to say good morning.

So I ask where the first display is - the first kitchen, the first screen, the place a visitor stops walking - and I put the Vaayu on a wall the supply crosses, inward from there, high, on a bracket. The owner worries the entrance will smell of nothing, and I say it already does, and now the first display will smell of the building. Then we set the level from the far end at five with the team and lock it, because the door will argue for turning it up every single morning and the lock is the only thing that wins that argument.

In a studio the same rule is a Mountain Breeze reed on the inward side of the desk, or Morning Freshness behind a white glass front, and nothing at all by the door. And the frame around every plan: no claim that fragrance moves dwell time, footfall or sales, and no claim about what it does to anything on display. It is an interiors decision, like lighting or music, alongside ventilation and extraction, never instead of them, and the live kitchen stays unscented. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Is it ever right to put the scent machine at the entrance of an appliance showroom?
No. The entrance is the one wall that opens, and every opening exchanges the threshold air with the street, so a source there releases into air that is leaving. The doorway still smells of outside, the reception desk beside it is over-scented, and the far displays receive whatever survives. Mount the SOSA Vaayu inward instead - high on a wall the AC supply crosses, past the threshold zone - and the register is met at the first display, which is where a first impression is actually made.
If the machine is deeper inside, will visitors still smell the fragrance when they arrive?
Yes, a few steps in, which is the right moment. On the doormat the street is competing and a fragrance met there is gone before it registers; at the first display, with the door closed behind them, the same faint register reads as the building itself. The sequence is door accepted as a draught, first display noticed, specification table forgotten. Nothing is lost by placing inward except the doorway, which was never going to hold a fragrance.
How far from the door should the scent machine be mounted?
Past the threshold zone, which is usually three to five metres deep on a street front and wider on a corner or an open mall frontage. Hold a tissue a metre inside the door while someone opens it; where it stops leaning is where the placement zone begins. From there, choose a wall the AC supply grilles cross, away from the returns, and mount high. On a corridor floor the inward position is the far third-point rather than simply past the door.
Where does a reed diffuser go in a small appliance studio - by the door or on the desk?
On the desk, on its inward side, never on the door side and never on a shelf by the entrance. A reed reaches one desk zone, so placing it by the door spends that zone on the draught and leaves the desk and the floor with nothing. A Mountain Breeze reed at Rs 849, or Morning Freshness at Rs 749 for a white glass floor, on the far side of the desk gives the studio its one zone where the advisor and the visitor actually stand.
Who should decide the fragrance level if the owner judges it from the doorway?
The team who stand on the floor, judging from the far point - the specification table or the last display - at five in the afternoon, never from the entrance. An owner walking in from the street smells the street, turns the machine up, and over-scents the desk without changing the doorway. Once the level is found it is locked with the key-lock on the Vaayu, because the entrance will argue for turning it up every morning and the lock is what refuses.
