Most scenting advice quietly assumes you own the whole building. A great many wealth practices do not. You have a suite on the ninth floor of a shared tower, or a serviced office with a landlord's reception downstairs, and your client walks through a lobby, a lift and a corridor you did not choose before they reach your door. That changes the brief in ways nobody writes about, and the most important consequence is a temptation you have to resist.
Quick answers — read this first
How do you scent an office inside a shared or serviced building? By being realistic about where your control starts. You do not own the lobby, the lift, the corridor or the landlord's air handling, so the honest boundary is your own door: your entrance mat, your reception, your meeting rooms and your cabins. Hold one register inside that boundary at a low, locked level, keep your door closed so the corridor's air and yours are not constantly exchanging, and schedule the machine to your own hours rather than the building's. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is freestanding, runs on a DC 12V 1A supply at 5W and needs nothing more than a live socket, which matters when the landlord will not let you drill anything.

The building corridor smells strong or stale. Should I scent my office more heavily? No. This is the single most common mistake in a shared building and it fails in a specific, predictable way. A client who has just walked through a strong corridor and then walks into a strongly scented office does not experience two pleasant spaces; they experience a contest, and a contest reads as one party trying to cover the other. It also puts your level well above what your own staff should be breathing all day. The right response is to make the threshold work instead: keep your door closed, put a proper mat inside it, keep your own air clean and calm, and let the transition read as a change of atmosphere rather than a change of volume. If the corridor is genuinely bad, that is a conversation with the building manager, not a purchase.

Can my fragrance reach a neighbouring office? It can, and in a shared HVAC system it is worth thinking about before you install anything. Many commercial floors run a common return air path, so air leaving your suite can be drawn back into a shared plenum and redistributed, which means your register may be faintly noticeable to a neighbour who did not choose it. A low locked setting, a machine placed inside your suite rather than near a return grille, and your door kept closed mostly solve it. What you should not do is inject fragrance into a shared duct system without the landlord's written agreement - the SOSA Aangan at Rs 25,999 and Meenar at Rs 38,500 are HVAC systems and they are a building conversation, not a tenant one.
The short answer
Short answer: In a shared or serviced building your control starts at your own door. You do not own the lobby, the lift, the corridor or the landlord's air handling, so hold one register inside your suite at a low locked level, keep the door closed, and never answer a strong or stale corridor with a stronger office - that reads as competing. Serviced buildings often restrict what you may mount, drill or leave running after hours, so a freestanding install matters: the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 lays flat, runs on DC 12V 1A at 5W and needs only a live socket. A shared HVAC return can carry your air to a neighbour, so HVAC systems (Aangan Rs 25,999, Meenar Rs 38,500) are a landlord conversation. Sukoon Rs 1,899, reeds from Rs 749. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Commercial scent marketing - at a glanceStep 1 - customers judge your premises in the first breath, before a wordStep 2 - one signature = premium feel, longer visits, brand recallStep 3 - size the system: Vaayu ₹11,999 covers most commercial floorsSingle rooms - reeds ₹749 · large premises - HVAC to ₹38,500Scheduled, hands-off · WhatsApp consult available
Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
My wealth office is inside a serviced building. How does that change the scenting plan?
Five points, and the first two are the ones that get missed. 1. Draw the boundary at your door. The lobby, the lift, the landlord's reception and the corridor outside your suite are somebody else's air and somebody else's decision. Everything from your threshold inwards is yours. Plan the register for that, and stop planning for the rest of it. 2. Never answer a corridor with volume. If the corridor is strong, or stale, or smells of the restaurant on the sixth floor, the instinct is to push your own level up so the contrast is decisive. It reads as competing, it puts your staff into air they did not sign up for, and it announces the corridor to every client who had not noticed it. Keep your level low and let the threshold do the work: a closed door, a proper mat, clean air inside. 3. Check what the building actually permits. Serviced and managed buildings commonly restrict wall fixings and drilling, anything mounted in a common area, anything left running when the suite is unoccupied, and sometimes power to the floor outside office hours. Ask before you buy, not after. 4. Install freestanding. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) lays flat and works standing on a console, a credenza or a low shelf. It runs on a DC 12V 1A supply at 5W and needs nothing more than a live socket within reach, which is the practical install in a building where you cannot put a screw in a wall. Its Bluetooth app and timer let you match the building's access hours rather than run into an empty floor. 5. Respect the shared return. Common return air paths can carry your air to a neighbour, so keep the machine inside your suite and away from a return grille, keep the setting low, and treat ducted systems - Aangan (₹25,999), Meenar (₹38,500) - as a landlord conversation. Registers from the Hotel Collection from ₹299; reeds from ₹749 for a cabin with no spare socket. Staff breathe this all day: whisper calibration, locked setting, and a sensitivity report is a recalibration signal. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: your control starts at your door - low locked level inside, never a louder office to answer a louder corridor, freestanding install (DC 12V 1A, 5W, live socket), and mind the shared return. Vaayu ₹11,999, reeds from ₹749. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The commercial standard most businesses choose: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, one signature on schedule - at ₹11,999. Single rooms and consultation corners start on reeds from ₹749; cabin systems from ₹1,899; large-premises HVAC from ₹25,999. The three things you do not control, and what to do about them

Three realities of a tenanted floor: the approach you did not design, the permissions you do not hold, and the air you share with people you have never met.

Why this works
Working inside somebody else's building without fighting it
1Your control starts at your door - plan for the suite, not the corridor2Never answer a strong or stale corridor with a stronger office: it reads as competing3Freestanding install: Vaayu lays flat, DC 12V 1A, 5W, one live socket4A shared HVAC return can carry your air next door - keep the setting low
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The approach
Your client's first three breaths happen in somebody else's building
Trace the actual journey. A client parks in a basement, walks past a security desk, waits at a lift lobby, rides up with strangers, steps out into a corridor with three other firms' nameplates on it, and only then reaches your door. That is four spaces you did not design and cannot control, and any of them may smell of the building's cleaning schedule, the ground-floor cafe, a neighbour's kitchenette or simply of a lift that has been full all morning. The temptation is to compensate at your own threshold and make the contrast unmistakable. Resist it, because contrast at that scale does not read as quality, it reads as a response - the client's nose registers that your office is answering something, and the something it is answering is the building you chose to be in. The better move is to make the transition quiet and definite: a door that closes properly rather than being propped open for the delivery boy, a decent mat inside it that catches what comes off shoes, clean air, and a register at a level that is noticed as composure rather than as a fragrance. A client who walks from a mediocre corridor into a calm, ordinary-smelling office reads that as a well-run practice. A client who walks into a wall of scent reads it as a cover.
Tip: the threshold does the work - a closed door and clean air beat any amount of extra output.
2
The permissions
What a serviced or managed building will and will not let you do
This is the practical half of the page and it is worth checking before you spend anything. Managed and serviced buildings commonly prohibit drilling or fixing anything to walls, ceilings or partitions you do not own; anything installed in or projecting into a common area, including the corridor immediately outside your door; anything connected to the building's ducting, plant or electrical distribution; and in many cases anything left running when the suite is unoccupied, which is a fire and insurance position rather than an arbitrary one. Some buildings also cut power to tenanted floors outside agreed hours, which quietly settles the question of overnight running for you. All of that points at the same install: freestanding, plugged into an ordinary socket inside your own suite, on a schedule that matches your own working hours. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is designed to lay flat and run from a surface, drawing a DC 12V 1A supply at 5W, so it asks for nothing more than a live socket within reach of a console or credenza, and its Bluetooth app and timer let you set the hours once. In a cabin with no spare socket at all, a reed diffuser from ₹749 needs no power and nothing mounted.
3
The shared air
Your neighbour did not choose your register
Most commercial floors do not give each tenant a sealed volume of air. Supply may be ducted from a central plant, and the return path is frequently common - a ceiling void acting as a plenum, transfer grilles above partitions, or a corridor that everything eventually leaks into. The consequence is that air leaving your suite can be picked up and redistributed, which means a strongly scented office is not only a decision about your own clients and staff; it is a decision you are partly making for the firm next door. In practice this is easy to manage and hard to fix after a complaint, so manage it: keep the setting low, place the machine well inside your suite rather than under or beside a return grille, keep the door closed, and run it on your hours rather than continuously. If a neighbour does raise it, drop the setting that day and treat it the way you would treat a staff sensitivity report - as a recalibration signal rather than an argument. And if the ambition is a whole-floor or whole-building signature, that is a ducted job with the Aangan (₹25,999) or Meenar (₹38,500), and it belongs in a conversation with the landlord and the facilities team before it belongs in a purchase order.
Tip: in a shared building the correct setting is the one your neighbour never has to think about.
The SOSA principle
You do not own the corridor. So do not try to win it. A louder office is not an answer to a louder building - it is an admission that you noticed.
Draw the line at your door, keep the level low and locked, install freestanding on a live socket, and remember that a shared return carries your air to somebody else.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

The building lobby is already scented by the landlord. Does mine clash?
It can, and it is worth a few minutes of attention rather than a redesign. Stand in the lobby, then in the lift, then in the corridor outside your door, and note what you can smell in each. If the landlord runs something bright and citrus-led and you run something warm and woody, a client crosses from one to the other in a few seconds and may register the change, though at sensible levels most people experience it simply as leaving the lobby. Two things reduce it to nothing: keeping your own level low, and keeping your door closed so the two do not mix in your entrance. What we would not do is try to match the landlord's register, because you have no control over whether they change it next quarter.
Can I put a diffuser just outside my door to claim the corridor?
Almost certainly not, and it is worth asking before you try. The corridor is a common area in nearly every shared or serviced building, which usually means nothing may be placed, mounted or run there without the building manager's permission, and in a fire-strategy sense a corridor is an escape route that landlords are strict about keeping clear. Beyond the rules, it is also a poor idea in practice: a corridor is ventilated and travelled by everyone on the floor, so your output disperses fast and reaches your neighbours before it reaches your clients. Spend the same effort on your threshold instead. If you genuinely want the corridor scented, ask the building manager whether they would consider it for the floor as a whole.
Our serviced office cuts power to the floor at night. Does that break the machine?
It does not break anything, and in most cases it is doing you a favour. A machine that runs into an empty office overnight is scenting nobody and dosing surfaces that will still be holding it when your first client arrives. What matters is that the unit comes back on in the morning, and that is what timer scheduling is for: on twenty to thirty minutes before your first appointment so the air is even rather than freshly dosed, held at one low level through the day, off after the last meeting. Set it once in the app and leave it alone. What is worth confirming with the building is whether the socket you plan to use is on a circuit that stays live during working hours, including on a Saturday if you see clients then.
A neighbouring tenant complained about our fragrance. What is the correct response?
Turn it down that day, then investigate calmly. A complaint that travels between suites almost always means one of three things: the setting is higher than it needs to be, the machine is sitting close to a shared return or transfer grille, or your door is being left open for long periods. Check the placement first, because moving a unit three metres often solves it without changing the level at all. Then drop the setting a notch regardless, and confirm with them a week later. Treat it exactly as you would treat a sensitivity report from your own team - as a recalibration signal rather than a dispute about tolerance. It is also worth remembering that somebody in a neighbouring office may have a genuine fragrance sensitivity, and in a shared building that is your constraint as much as theirs.
Is it worth scenting at all if the client's whole approach is out of my hands?
Yes, but for the reason that survives scrutiny rather than the one people usually give. The claim we will not make is that a scented suite improves how a client feels about their portfolio, or affects a mandate, a retention or a referral - there is no support for any of that. What ambient scent research does support, at moderate effect sizes, is that a pleasant register congruent with its setting improves how people evaluate a space and the service delivered in it. In a shared building your suite is the only part of the journey you control, which arguably makes it the part most worth getting right: clean, calm air behind a door that closes properly, at a level nobody names. That is achievable in a tenanted floor for the price of a machine and a socket.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
