Founder Diaries · Reed Diffuser & Home Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles8 min readUpdated September 2026
You will have about twenty seconds at the door, and the person you are handing something to will have their hands full. That is the real constraint of a dinner gift and almost nobody plans for it: the host is mid-cooking, the doorbell has already gone twice, and anything that needs a vase, a shelf in the fridge or a decision about whether to open it now becomes one more job handed to the busiest person in the building. A reed diffuser is useful here for an unglamorous reason - it can be put down on the side table still boxed and dealt with on Sunday.
The dinner default. SOSA Morning Freshness, ₹749 for 50ml and ₹1,249 for 130ml - Malabar lemon and mint, the least declarative of the five scents, so it is the safe one for a house whose taste you have never had to think about. Boxed, it can be handed over and put straight down: no vase, no fridge space, no flame, about 6 to 10 weeks whenever they get to it.
Quick answers — read this first
What should I take when someone invites me for dinner? Something that needs nothing from the host in the moment you hand it over. A 50ml SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 to ₹849, has no flame, no socket and no water, runs about 6 to 10 weeks, and can sit unopened on a table until the evening is over.
Is a reed diffuser too much for dinner at a friend's place? For a regular weekly dinner, yes - a candle at ₹399 is the right size of gesture, or nothing at all if you are in and out of each other's flats constantly. A ₹749 reed suits the dinner you were properly invited to rather than the one you turn up at.
Which size should I take to a dinner? You have usually seen this home, so use that. 50ml from ₹749 if the gift is going to a bedroom, a hallway or a study; 130ml from ₹1,249 only if their living and dining space is genuinely one large open room.
The short answer
Short answer: Take something that needs nothing from the host in the twenty seconds you are at the door. A 50ml SOSA reed diffuser is Rs 749 to Rs 849, needs no vase, no fridge space and no flame, and runs about 6 to 10 weeks. For a casual weekly dinner, a candle at Rs 399 is the right size instead.
The pick: A single 50ml reed diffuser, ₹749 to ₹849 - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five if you have never noticed what their home smells of.
Why: It can be handed over and put down. No vase, no trimming, no fridge space, no flame, and no moment where the host has to stop cooking and admire something.
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
What should you take to someone's house when they have invited you for dinner?
Take the thing that asks least of the host at the door, because that doorway is the only part of the evening you control. The host will be holding something, the hallway will be crowded, and a gift that arrives needing a vase, water, a trim, fridge space or a decision about opening it turns your gesture into a small task. A reed diffuser is the opposite of that: alcohol-free oil in a bottle with rattan reeds, no flame, no socket, no water and nothing to switch off, running about 6 to 10 weeks once they get round to it. The five SOSA scents are Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, and Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml, with 130ml from ₹1,249. When not to buy one: if you eat at this house every week, a ₹749 object each time is odd rather than generous, and a candle at ₹399 or nothing at all is the honest answer. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The test is not how good the gift is. It is whether the host has to do anything with it while holding a hot pan.
For a dinner you were properly invited to: a 50ml reed from ₹749, handed over and put down. For the weekly one, a candle at ₹399.
A dinner gift is judged in a doorway, not in a shop. Three things decide whether it lands well, and only one of them is the gift itself.
1
The first constraint
Whatever you bring becomes the host's next job
Watch what actually happens. Flowers mean finding a vase, cutting stems and filling it with water while the rice is on. A cake or a dessert means clearing a shelf in the fridge that is already full because they have been cooking since morning. A bottle or a box invites the question shall we open this now, which the host has to answer in front of everybody.
A boxed reed diffuser asks none of those. It gets set down on the console table, it does not wilt, it does not need refrigerating, and nobody has to open it in the hallway. That is not a romantic argument for a gift, but it is the true one, and it is why a reed works better at a doorway than most things that cost the same ₹749.
Tip: If it needs a vase, water, a knife or fridge space, you have brought a task.
2
The second constraint
You have eaten here before, so size it properly
A dinner gift has an advantage that a housewarming gift does not: you know the house. You have sat in the living room, you know whether it opens into the dining area or whether it is a closed room with a door, and you know whether the flat is a compact 2BHK or a large 3BHK. Use that, because size is the decision people get wrong.
The 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849 is the dinner default - one room, a bedroom, a hallway, a study, a guest bathroom shelf. The 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 is only for a genuinely large open living and dining space. The 130ml is not the better gift, it is the bigger room's gift, and in a small closed room it gets moved into a corridor within a week.
3
The third constraint
Sometimes the right answer is smaller, or nothing
Dinner covers two very different events. There is the dinner you were invited to - a date fixed a week ago, other guests, the good crockery - and there is the dinner where you were told to come over because there is extra food. The second one does not want a ₹749 object. Bring a candle at ₹399, which is about 15 to 18 hours and reads as casual, or bring nothing and stop keeping score.
The other case to skip: a host who already runs a diffuser they chose themselves. A different scent arriving for the same room reads as a small correction of their choice. Buy for a room they have not handled - a bedroom, a hallway - or take a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 in a scent they already run, noting that Evening Calm is the one scent with no refill published.
Tip: A dinner you were summoned to by phone at 6pm is not a ₹749 occasion.
The size decision, before the scent decision
50ml or 130ml is a room question, not a budget question
The 50ml from ₹749 suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or anybody receiving their first diffuser. The 130ml from ₹1,249 suits an open-plan living and dining area or a large 3BHK living room, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom - a bigger bottle in the wrong room gets moved into a corridor. All five scents run about 6 to 10 weeks either way.
Decide which it is: an invitation fixed in advance, or come-over-there-is-food.
For a real invitation, a 50ml reed from Rs 749. For the casual one, Rs 399.
Size by the room you have sat in: 130ml only for one large open space.
Hand it over, say what it is in one line, and let them put it down.
The SOSA principle
A host gift is not judged by what it cost. It is judged by whether it made the next ten minutes of somebody's evening easier or harder, and that is decided entirely by what the object needs doing to it.
Which is why the most expensive thing in the doorway is often the flowers, and the cheapest to receive is the one that can simply be put down.
Which scent and which size for a house you have eaten in before
Because you have been inside this house, you can actually choose rather than guess. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon and mint, the least declarative of the five and the right call if you have never once registered what their home smells of. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night-blooming jasmine, the one that most obviously reads as a present rather than as household supply. Evening Calm at ₹799 is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of the two ingredients, not a claim about what it does to anybody. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, dry and green, and it suits a study or a hallway. Fresh Brew at ₹849 is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla, the strongest opinion in the range and the one to take only to a house whose taste you genuinely know.
The SOSA gift edit
The four things people carry to dinner, and what each one costs the host
The option
Who it suits, and where it fails
A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849
Handed over, put down, opened whenever. About 6 to 10 weeks, no flame and nothing to switch off. It fails if they already run a diffuser they chose for that room, and it is over-scaled for a casual midweek dinner.
A candle · ₹399
The casual version of the same idea - about 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a duo at about 30 to 36 hours. Right when a ₹749 gift would be too much. It fails for anybody who will not light a flame, and in rented rooms where flames are often not permitted.
Flowers · whatever the shop charged
The default, and the one with the most hidden work in it: a vase, a trim, water, and somebody doing all three mid-cooking. They also have a visible end date, which a boxed gift does not.
A box of sweets or a dessert · varies
Genuinely welcome when it is the only one in the house. At a festival, or at a dinner with eight other guests, it is the fourth box on the counter and needs fridge or cupboard space the host does not have tonight.
When it has to look like an occasion
A duo set is the readymade gift box, without anybody assembling a hamper
Two 50ml reeds in one box: Day & Night pairs Morning Freshness lemon-mint with Evening Calm lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with Mountain Breeze pine and cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla with Garden Bloom rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. The 130ml x 2 versions are ₹2,498, ₹2,548 and ₹2,598.
One practical note, because a gifted diffuser can quietly become a dead bottle. Four of the five scents publish refills - 300ml at ₹2,399 and 500ml at ₹3,499 - so a host who likes what you brought can keep that room going. Evening Calm publishes no refill, which is worth knowing if you are choosing between it and Garden Bloom at the same ₹799. And if you want to spend more than ₹849 on a dinner gift, do not go up a size into a room that cannot take it: a duo set at ₹1,498 gives them two rooms instead, though it looks like an occasion rather than a Thursday.
Morning Freshness and Evening Calm in one box, two 50ml bottles. The readymade housewarming and client gift, without a hamper in sight.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.
Tell SOSA who it is for, roughly how big the room is, whether their home is already scented and what you want to spend - and you will be told which size and which scent, including the times the honest answer is the 50ml rather than the 130ml.
The best host gift I ever received was handed to me while I was holding a strainer, and the reason it was the best is that I could put it down and forget about it until everybody had gone home.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA
The SOSA gifting range
Two questions settle almost every reed diffuser gift, and the first one is not price. How big is the room it is going into? A 50ml suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; a 130ml suits an open-plan living and dining area, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom. Then: how much do you actually know about their taste? The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five for a home you have never stood in, and Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla is the strongest opinion in the range. Price follows those two answers rather than leading them.
The SOSA gifting range
Pick the size by the room, then the scent by how little you know about them
Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large open home or a business, not a flat
₹11,999
Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-basedHotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The honest price sheet
What SOSA publishes, and what SOSA does not
Everything below is on the live product pages. Anything not on this list is not something a gifting page should state.
Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla ₹999. Bubble Candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.
Not published, and therefore never stated here: how long any fragrance will be liked, delivery or dispatch timing, any festive discount, any minimum order quantity or bulk rate, and any claim about what a person will feel on receiving a gift. Those questions go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
Not sure which size or which scent? Tell SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 four things: who it is for and how well you know them, roughly how big the room is, whether their home is already scented, and what you want to spend. You will get one straight recommendation rather than a catalogue - including the times the honest answer is the 50ml rather than the 130ml, or a single bottle rather than the duo set. Corporate and client gifting: bulk orders are welcome and custom label or logo on product is available; quantities, terms and anything corporate are discussed on WhatsApp rather than priced on a page. Bespoke composition, a fragrance composed for you by Sonal, is a real SOSA service and is also discussed there. Where SOSA is: SOSA is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune and sends orders across India. There is no SOSA shop, stockist or counter in any other city, so anything you read here about Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mysuru or anywhere else is about the homes in those cities and not about a local branch.

A note from Sonal
The reed diffuser is the product people are least embarrassed to give and most surprised by afterwards. What they expect is a decorative object. What it actually is, is a small piece of a household that runs for six to ten weeks and then ends, which is a very different thing from an ornament somebody has to keep forever out of politeness.
The reason I recommend it so often for gifting is unromantic: you are buying for a room rather than for a person. Personal fragrance is a taste decision, and when you cannot finish the sentence she usually wears something with..., no amount of money makes the guess better. A room does not have a signature scent it is loyal to. That is why a reed diffuser works for a colleague, a client, a mother-in-law and a friend's new flat - relationships where you may like somebody very much and still have no idea what is on their dressing table.
The one thing I would press on is size, because it is where good intentions go wrong. The 130ml is not the better gift, it is the bigger room's gift. Put it in a small closed bedroom and the person will move it to a corridor within a week. A 50ml at ₹749 in the right room beats a 130ml at ₹1,249 in the wrong one every single time, and if you want to spend more, spend it on the duo set so they get two rooms rather than one very loud one.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best thing to take to someone's house for dinner?
Something that needs nothing from the host at the door. They will be cooking, so a gift that requires a vase, a trim, water, fridge space or a decision about opening it now is a task rather than a present. A 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 can be set down still boxed and opened after everybody has left.
Is a reed diffuser an appropriate dinner gift?
Yes, for a dinner you were invited to in advance. It goes to a room rather than to a person, so it carries no assumption about anybody's taste in perfume, and it needs no flame, no socket and no water. For a casual dinner at a flat you are in and out of every week, a candle at Rs 399 is a better size of gesture.
Should I take the 50ml or the 130ml to a dinner?
The 50ml, in almost every case. You have sat in this house, so you know whether the living and dining area is one large open space, which is the only situation where the 130ml at Rs 1,249 to Rs 1,349 makes sense. In a compact flat the larger bottle is too much and usually ends up in a corridor.
What if the host already has a reed diffuser?
Then buy for a different room rather than the one they have already decided about, because a second scent for the same space reads as a correction. A bedroom, a hallway or a study is usually unhandled. A refill in a scent they already run is the other good answer, though Evening Calm does not publish one.
How long does a reed diffuser last once they open it?
About 6 to 10 weeks, which is the only figure SOSA publishes, and it applies to both the 50ml and the 130ml because the bigger bottle is for a bigger room rather than a longer life. Refills are 300ml at Rs 2,399 and 500ml at Rs 3,499 for four of the five scents.
Take the next step
Pick for the doorway first, then for the room
A 50ml reed from ₹749 for a dinner you were invited to; a candle at ₹399 for the casual one; a duo set from ₹1,498 only when the evening is genuinely an occasion. Tell SOSA on WhatsApp what the dinner is and how big the room is, and you will get one recommendation rather than a list.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
