Two jobs, one machine, one shelf of registers, and almost nothing else in common. Ninety minutes in a flat you do not own, for a person you have never met, is not a smaller version of eleven hours a day in your own office with the same eight people. The dose is different, the person you calibrate for is different, and above all the two jobs fail in opposite directions: a viewing fails on day one by being too strong, and an office fails in month nine by having crept upward while nobody inside it noticed.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the actual difference between scenting a viewing and scenting my own office? Four variables, and every one of them moves. Time on target: ninety minutes against eleven hours a day, five or six days a week. Who is breathing it: one stranger who will never return, against the same eight people plus whoever walks in. Whether you control the room: a listing is someone else's building with someone else's furniture, one working socket and a key you hand back, while your office is a room whose airflow, mount points and schedule are entirely yours. And what failure looks like: a viewing goes wrong by being too strong on arrival, an office goes wrong by drifting upward over months. Same seven registers. Two completely different calibrations.

Which of the two needs the lower setting? Both need a low setting, for opposite reasons, and the office is arguably the lower of the two. In a listing you deliberately under-dose because a heavily scented property reads as concealment to a buyer, who starts wondering what is underneath it. In your own office you under-dose because of cumulative exposure: your front-desk executive breathes that air for well over two thousand hours a year, and no client comes anywhere near that. The practical difference is what happens next. A viewing setting is a decision you make on the day and remake next weekend. An office setting is a decision you make once and then have to defend for years against your own adapted nose.

Can one machine do both jobs? Physically yes, and that is a genuine consideration - a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, so it can sit permanently on an office console and also be unplugged and carried to a listing. But understand what you are trading. The moment the machine leaves the office, the office is unscented, and consistency is the entire point of permanent scenting. The moment it comes back, someone has to reset it from viewing calibration to office calibration, and that resetting step is exactly where drift enters. If both jobs matter to you, the cleaner answer is a machine that lives in the office and a separate arrangement for listings.
The short answer
Short answer: Viewing scenting is episodic: ninety minutes, one stranger, a room you do not control, a machine that starts and stops, and a failure mode of being too strong. Permanent office scenting is eleven hours a day, five or six days a week, the same team, a room you control completely, and a failure mode of creeping upward over months as everyone inside adapts. The seven registers are the same, from Rs 299. The calibration is not. Size the office on connected air: SOSA Vaayu Rs 11,999 for a connected front of house, Megh Rs 3,499, Sukoon Rs 1,899, reeds from Rs 749. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.
Talk to us: WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size for a free sizing and fragrance consult.
Commercial scent marketing - at a glanceStep 1 - customers judge your premises in the first breath, before a wordStep 2 - one signature = premium feel, longer visits, brand recallStep 3 - size the system: Vaayu ₹11,999 covers most commercial floorsSingle rooms - reeds ₹749 · large premises - HVAC to ₹38,500Scheduled, hands-off · WhatsApp consult available
Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
How is scenting my own office actually different from scenting a property I am showing?
Six differences, and they are structural rather than cosmetic. 1. Time on target. A viewing is ninety minutes and then the machine goes back in the car. An office runs from the time your first person unlocks the door to the time the last one leaves, which in most Indian brokerages is closer to eleven hours, five or six days a week. Everything downstream of that number changes. 2. Who is breathing it. A buyer is a stranger with a fresh nose who will never be in that room again. Your team are the same people, in the same chairs, tomorrow and next month. The nose you calibrate for moves from a visitor to your payroll, which is the whole of the staff exposure question. 3. Whether you control the room. In a listing you inherit the owner's furniture, whatever windows the caretaker left open, an air-conditioner you may not be allowed to run, one socket that actually works, and a key you hand back at six. In your office you control the airflow, the mount point, the schedule and the door. That is why the wall and HVAC mount and the timer on a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, mains powered) matter here and are almost irrelevant in a vacant flat. 4. The register horizon. A listing register is a choice you can revisit next weekend. An office register is something clients and staff start to associate with your firm, so you are choosing for years, not for Saturday. 5. The failure mode. A viewing fails loudly and immediately by being too strong. An office fails quietly and slowly by drifting up a notch in March and another in June. Two different mistakes need two different defences. 6. What you do about it. For viewings: start earlier rather than stronger and reset each time. For the office: pick the lowest usable setting, hold it a full week, lock it, and audit it cold from the doorway once a month. The office fundamentals we are not restating are in the office reception guide and the office scent marketing guide; the viewing side sits across the rest of this bank and in the real-estate scent marketing guide. The two jobs, laid side by side

Three things: the four variables that move between the two jobs, the two opposite ways each one fails, and what that changes in what you buy and how you run it.

Why this works
Two jobs, two calibrations - the four differences that matter
1Ninety minutes for one stranger, against eleven hours a day for the same team2A room you do not control, against a room whose airflow and schedule are yours3A register chosen for Saturday, against a register you are keeping for years4Fails by being too strong, against fails by drifting upward over months
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
Side by side
Four variables, and all four of them move
Put the two jobs on one page and the differences stop being abstract. Duration. A viewing is ninety minutes, of which the buyer is really forming an impression in the first thirty seconds and the last five. An office runs eleven hours, five or six days a week, roughly fifty weeks a year. Population. A viewing has one household in it, once. An office has the same eight people in it every working day, plus a stream of clients who each get forty minutes and then leave. Control. This is the one brokers underrate. In a listing you are working in a building you do not own: the furniture is the owner's or absent entirely, the windows are wherever the caretaker left them, the air-conditioning may be off at the meter, there is usually exactly one socket in a sensible place, and you hand the key back. Your office is the opposite in every respect - you decide where the machine sits, whether it is freestanding on a console or wall mounted, whether it runs into the air-conditioning return, and what hours it runs. That is precisely why the mount options and the timer on a Vaayu (₹11,999) are worth paying attention to here and worth almost nothing in a vacant flat. Duty cycle. A viewing machine starts and stops; it is asked to bring a still, closed room to a settled level once, and then it is done. An office machine is asked to hold a level that has to survive being lived in - doors opening, tea being made, the printer running, monsoon shoes at the rack, and eight people who have entirely stopped noticing it. Those are not two settings on the same dial. They are two jobs.
Tip: a viewing asks a machine to reach a level once; an office asks it to hold one through everything a working day throws at it.
2
Failure
The viewing fails loudly on day one, the office fails quietly in month nine
The single most useful thing in this section is that the two jobs go wrong in opposite directions, which means the defence against one is useless against the other. A viewing fails by being too strong. You arrive late, you turn it up to compensate for the time you do not have, and the buyer walks into a wall of fragrance in a flat they have never seen. What they conclude is not that you are thorough. What they conclude, quite reasonably, is that something is being covered up - damp, smoke, a drain, a pet, a kitchen - and they start looking for it instead of looking at the flat. That failure is loud, it happens on day one, and the fix is a rule you can write on a card: start earlier rather than stronger. An office fails the other way. On the day you install it the level is correct and everyone agrees. Four weeks later the people inside have stopped registering it, because that is simply what happens to a constant background smell, and one of them nudges it up a notch because it feels like it has stopped working. In March it goes up again. By September a client notices it from the doorway while nobody who works there can smell anything at all, and the level in your office is now the level you would never have accepted on day one. That failure is silent, it is nobody's fault in particular, and no amount of good judgement inside the room will catch it, because the room is the problem. It is caught by three things: a setting you lock rather than leave adjustable, a written record of what the setting is, and one person who walks in cold from outside once a month and judges it from the doorway before they have taken their coat off.
3
Consequences
What it changes in what you buy and how you run it
Follow the two jobs through to the buying decision and they diverge again. For viewings you are buying luggage: something that goes in a car boot, sets up in two minutes, runs on a socket you have to find in someone else's flat, and is unremarkable enough that a buyer does not clock it on an empty console. For the office you are buying a fixture: something that can be positioned once and left, ideally out of the client sightline, ideally in the path of the air-conditioning return so the room distributes rather than the machine projecting, with a schedule so nobody has to remember to switch it on at ten and off at nine. The waterless argument also lands differently. In a closed vacant flat with marble, fresh paint or wooden flooring, the fact that a Vaayu (₹11,999) adds no water, no humidity and no wet residue is a presentation argument. In your own office it is a housekeeping one: you are running the thing eleven hours a day next to paper, files and a printer, and nothing in that room benefits from added moisture. Sizing is a shared discipline: floor area times ceiling height gives cubic feet, divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres, and only connected air counts. A 1,200 sq ft office at a 10 ft ceiling is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340 cubic metres. A 500 sq ft two-cabin unit is about 140, where a Sukoon (₹1,899) or Megh (₹3,499) on a register from ₹299 is the honest answer and the larger machine is not. And the running discipline diverges completely: viewings need a checklist per property, the office needs a locked setting and a monthly cold-nose audit. The rest of this section takes the office half apart room by room, starting with what a brokerage office should smell like.
Tip: buy luggage for listings and a fixture for the office; the same unit can do both, but only one of them at a time.
The SOSA principle
A viewing fails on day one by being too strong. An office fails in month nine by having crept upward while everyone inside adapted to it. Same machine, opposite defences.
Start earlier rather than stronger in a listing. Lock the setting, write it down and judge it cold from the doorway in your office. Neither rule protects you from the other mistake.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

If I already scent my listings, do I need to do anything different for my office?
Yes, and treating the office as a longer viewing is the mistake this page exists to prevent. Three things change concretely. The setting comes down and then gets locked, because your team are exposed to it for orders of magnitude longer than any buyer and because the level that reads as considered on a first walk-in becomes a lot at hour nine. The register becomes a long commitment rather than a per-property choice, so pick one you can still live with in two years and buy it in a size you can reliably repurchase. And you need a routine you do not need for viewings at all: a written record of the setting, a rule that only one person changes it, and someone walking in cold once a month to judge it from the doorway. None of that applies to a listing, where the machine is reset from scratch every time anyway.
Is a viewing setting stronger or weaker than an office setting?
Lower than instinct in both cases, and in most real rooms the office ends up at or below the viewing level rather than above it. That surprises people, because a viewing feels like the high-stakes moment and the office feels like background. But a viewing is one exposure of ninety minutes to a fresh nose, while an office is a continuous exposure to noses that have adapted, and adaptation is exactly what makes people push a permanent setting too high. The honest way to set either one is the same and it is not a number: bring the machine to the lowest setting at which someone entering from outside can tell the room has been looked after without being able to name a fragrance, then stop. In the office, additionally, hold it there for a full working week before you decide anything, because your judgement on day one and your judgement on day five will differ.
Can I run my office machine on a timer and forget about it?
You can run it on a timer, and you should, because a schedule removes the daily human decision that is the main source of drift. What you cannot do is forget about it, and the reason is not the machine. It is that the room changes around it: the seating plan moves, a partition goes up, the air-conditioning gets serviced or does not, a new printer arrives, the monsoon starts, and the same setting produces a different result in a room that is no longer the same room. So the timer handles the switching and a person handles the judgement. Once a month is enough. The one rule that matters is that the judgement is made by someone who has been outside for at least fifteen minutes, standing at the door, because that is the only nose in the building that can still read the room accurately.
We only have one machine and both jobs need it. What do we do?
Decide which job is the priority and be honest that the other one is being served part-time, because the alternative is doing both badly. If the office is the priority, leave the machine there and prepare listings another way - airing the property properly, a clean, and a reed diffuser placed early is a real and unglamorous answer that many brokers end up at. If a specific premium listing is the priority for the next few weeks, the machine goes there and your office goes back to whatever it smelled like before, which is fine as long as you have actually fixed the printer, the pantry and the air-conditioning filters first. What does not work is shuttling it back and forth while expecting the office to feel consistent, because consistency is the only thing permanent scenting is buying you. If the shuttling is genuinely unavoidable, at least write both settings down so the reset is mechanical rather than a fresh judgement call every time.
Does any of this make a difference to whether we win the mandate or the buyer makes an offer?
We are not going to claim it does, in either job. Ambient scent research supports improved evaluations of a space and of the service delivered in it, longer dwell and stronger recall, at moderate effect sizes. It does not support claims about offers, sale price, speed of sale, mandates won or fees agreed, and anyone in this industry telling you otherwise is selling past their evidence. The case that survives scrutiny is narrower and still worth the money: a listing that smells aired and cared for lets a buyer concentrate on the property instead of on the air, and an office that smells composed and consistent is congruent with the rest of what your firm is claiming about how it works. Buy on that and you will not feel misled a year later.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
