There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

What fragrance suits a 25th or 50th anniversary party at home?
An evening register held gently across the connected living volume, with the table left out of it. The St. Regis-inspired blend of amber, violet and woods is the richest of the seven SOSA registers and the most naturally evening-elegant, powdery and plush rather than sweet, and it is the one we would reach for first for a formal milestone after dark. The W Hotels-inspired citrus, pepper and amber is the boldest and suits an evening built around drinks and standing rather than a seated dinner. If the guest list is wide and includes a lot of elderly relatives, the Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar is quieter and is close to unobjectionable. The Vaayu at Rs 11,999 ships with four of these blends in the box as one of three bundles, so you can try the register in your own room rather than committing blind. There is no published data ranking the seven by throw or longevity, so choose on character and let the machine and the setting decide how present it feels. How many machines do I need for sixty people across a ground floor?
Almost certainly one, and the arithmetic is worth doing yourself. Multiply the floor area of the rooms that will genuinely be open to each other by the ceiling height to get cubic feet, then divide by 35.3 for cubic metres. A connected 1,200 sq ft at 10 ft is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340 cubic metres. Even a connected 2,000 sq ft at 10 ft is 20,000 cubic feet, about 566 cubic metres. The Vaayu is rated to approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected air, so one at Rs 11,999 covers both comfortably and two at Rs 23,998 would be spending money to make the same room louder. The caveat that matters far more than the rating is the word connected. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, so if half your guest route runs through rooms that stay shut, those are separate problems and the answer there is a reed from Rs 749 or a Boond at Rs 899 rather than a second machine. If your ground floor is genuinely large and you have central air-conditioning, the Aangan at Rs 25,999 ducted into the existing system is the real whole-home answer. Can I run a fragrance during the anniversary dinner itself?
Not at the table, no. When people sit down, the food becomes the event, and most of what we perceive as flavour is actually smell, so a register running at a noticeable level around a dining table is mixed into the meal rather than sitting beside it. The same applies to the cake, which is already a strong and well-liked smell and does not need help. In most modern homes the dining area and the living room are one connected volume, and you cannot scent half a body of air, so the practical version is not to switch anything off dramatically at nine o'clock. It is to set the whole thing conspicuously lower from the beginning, so that by the time people sit down the air reads as a clean, settled house rather than as an actively perfumed room. Put your real effort into the entrance and the first hour, which is where a fresh nose meets the house and where the impression is genuinely made. If your dining room has a door, the answer is simpler: keep the machine out of it entirely.
Should the fragrance be stronger because there are more people?
It should be weaker, which is the opposite of what most hosts assume. Three things compound on a crowded evening. A room with sixty people in it is several degrees warmer than the empty room you set the machine in, and warm air is more mobile, so the register travels further and reads as more present. The guests arrive with completely fresh noses while you have been in the house all day and adapted hours ago, which means your judgement is the least reliable in the building. And a crowded room is one nobody can easily leave, so anything slightly too strong stops being a preference and becomes something people endure for four hours. Set it below your ordinary weekday level, start it a couple of hours early so it is settled rather than actively scenting, and then do not touch it. If anyone tells you the house smells strong, turn it down or off in that part of the house immediately and make the change permanent, because almost nobody says this once, let alone twice.
Where do I put the machine at a big anniversary party?
In the connected volume, near the start of the route, and away from where people will be standing still. In practice that usually means the hall or the passage just inside the entrance rather than in the middle of the living room, on a surface with air moving past it, not shut inside a cabinet with the door closed, and not directly in the path of an air-conditioning draught which will strip the scent off in one direction and leave the rest of the room thin. If you have a stairwell, placing the unit low in the connected ground-floor volume near the stair base lets convection carry the register upward on its own, which is usually better than buying a second machine for the first floor. Two hard exclusions: not on any surface that carries a lit candle, and not on the table where the cake will be cut.
