Almost everybody sizes a home fragrance system by square feet, because square feet is the number written on the plan, quoted by the builder and used in every conversation about the house. It is also the wrong number. A machine does not cover a carpet, it fills a volume, and the moment your ceilings go above the standard ten feet the two figures stop agreeing with each other. Here is the arithmetic that proves it, and the two decisions that follow once you have done it.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I fragrance a villa with high ceilings? Size it by volume rather than by floor area, then place the unit low. Floor area multiplied by the real ceiling height gives cubic feet, and cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres. A 600 sq ft room at a 10 ft ceiling is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170 cubic metres; the same 600 sq ft at 20 ft is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340 cubic metres. Same floor plan, twice the room. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is waterless cold-air rated at approximately 1000 cubic metres, with a Bluetooth app and timer and four hotel-inspired waterless blends in the box, and it holds a tall connected ground floor of roughly 612 cubic metres comfortably. Place it at console height, not high, because warm air rises and will carry the register upward on its own.
Does a high ceiling mean I need a bigger scent machine? Usually not a bigger one, but it does mean you must count the air honestly before you buy. The Vaayu's approximately 1000 cubic metres corresponds to about 3,500 sq ft of connected floor at a 10 ft ceiling, about 2,900 sq ft at 12 ft, about 2,500 sq ft at 14 ft, about 2,200 sq ft at 16 ft and about 1,750 sq ft at 20 ft. So the rating has not changed and your house has not changed, but the floor area that rating corresponds to shrinks as the ceiling rises. Most Indian villas with 11 or 12 ft ceilings still sit well inside one machine once you subtract the bedrooms that stay shut. What genuinely pushes a house past it is a very large open ground floor combined with real height.
Where should the machine go in a room with a high ceiling? Low, at roughly console or shelf height, inside the connected volume, in open air and out of any air-conditioning draught. Warm air is less dense than cool air, so anything released near the floor travels upward through the zone where people actually sit and stand before it reaches the top of the room. A unit placed high on a ledge, a gallery rail or the top of a cabinet releases its output straight into the upper part of the volume, which in a tall room is architecture rather than a space anybody occupies, and very little of it comes back down. Tall rooms also reward an earlier schedule rather than a stronger setting, because there is more air to bring to an even level.
The short answer
Short answer: High ceilings change the volume, not the machine. Floor area x ceiling height = cubic feet; divided by 35.3 = cubic metres. A 600 sq ft room at 10 ft is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170 cubic metres; the same room at 20 ft is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340. Read the SOSA Vaayu's approximately 1000 cubic metres as floor area at your own height: about 3,500 sq ft at 10 ft, 2,900 at 12 ft, 2,500 at 14 ft, 2,200 at 16 ft and 1,750 at 20 ft. A tall villa ground floor of 1,400 sq ft at 12 ft plus stair void and landing is roughly 612 cubic metres, inside one Vaayu at Rs 11,999 (waterless, app and timer, four hotel-inspired blends included). Place it low, start the schedule earlier rather than stronger, and give every room behind a shut door a reed from Rs 749. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, four hotel-inspired blends included in the box) for the connected living volume of a villa; reeds from ₹749 for a single bedroom or bathroom; a single room done properly from ₹899; the Aangan (₹25,999) ducted into central air-conditioning for genuine whole-home coverage.

A villa is not one room, it is a set of connected volumes and a set of closed doors, and the two need different answers. Whole-home scenting means one fragrance held evenly across the part of the house you actually live in - the entrance, the living room, the dining - running on a schedule so it is already there when someone walks through your front door, and already there when you come home yourself. The bedrooms, the guest bathroom and the study get their own quiet solutions. Nobody in the house has to remember anything.
My villa has high ceilings throughout. How do I work out what it actually needs?
Four steps, and the first one takes a minute with a calculator. 1. Convert, using the real height. Floor area x ceiling height = cubic feet; / 35.3 = cubic metres. A 600 sq ft room at a 10 ft ceiling is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170m³. The same 600 sq ft at a 20 ft ceiling is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340m³. Identical floor plan, double the room. 2. Read the rating as floor area at your height. The SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated at approximately 1000m³, which is 35,300 cubic feet. Divide by your ceiling: about 3,500 sq ft at 10 ft, 2,900 at 12 ft, 2,500 at 14 ft, 2,200 at 16 ft, 1,750 at 20 ft. Nothing about the machine changed; the floor area it corresponds to did. 3. Count only the connected air. A tall villa with a 1,400 sq ft connected ground run at 12 ft is 16,800 cubic feet, about 476m³; a stair void with a 100 sq ft footprint rising 24 ft adds 2,400 cubic feet, about 68m³; a 200 sq ft landing at 12 ft adds another 2,400 cubic feet, about 68m³. Roughly 612m³ - and the same house at 10 ft ceilings would be about 511m³, so two extra feet added about 101m³ of air that the floor plan never mentioned. One machine, run gently. 4. Then place it low and start it early. Console or shelf height, inside the connected volume, in open air, out of the direct blast of a split air-conditioner. Warm air rises, so a low source travels up through the space people use; a high one scents a ceiling nobody stands in. More air takes longer to even out, so move the start time back rather than reaching for the intensity. The doors are unchanged by any of this. A shut bedroom is sealed air at any ceiling height and takes a reed from ₹749 or a Boond ₹899; four of them brings a tall house to ₹14,995. Every room regardless of doors is the ducted Aangan ₹25,999 on central air-conditioning. Ventilate and clean first; a tall room holds a great deal of air and scent finishes clean air rather than covering anything. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your floor area and your ceiling height. Why this works at home
A tall house, counted honestly
The whole-home answer: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³, and it arrives with four hotel-inspired blends in the box. A single bedroom or guest bathroom starts on reeds from ₹749.
Square feet is a floor measurement, and a machine is filling everything above it
The reason this goes wrong so consistently is that the entire property conversation in India happens in square feet. The plan is in square feet, the builder quotes square feet, the sale deed says square feet, and so when a villa owner starts shopping for a scenting system the square-foot figure is the only number to hand. But a machine is rated in cubic metres, because what it actually does is bring a body of air to an even level, and a body of air has three dimensions. The conversion is not difficult: floor area x ceiling height = cubic feet, and cubic feet / 35.3 = cubic metres. Run it once and the gap becomes obvious. A 600 sq ft living room at a standard 10 ft ceiling is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170m³. The identical 600 sq ft at a 20 ft ceiling is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340m³. Same carpet, twice the room, and the floor plan is word for word the same document. The dramatic version of this - the double-height hall - at least announces itself, and it has a page of its own. The quiet version is the one that catches people out: a villa built with 11 or 12 ft ceilings throughout looks entirely ordinary on paper and is carrying ten to twenty per cent more air in every single room. At 14 ft it is forty per cent more. Nobody notices, because there is no one tall room to point at - just a house that reads slightly thinner than the number on the box suggested it would.
Tip: the plan shows the carpet. The machine is filling everything between that carpet and the ceiling, and in a tall house that is most of the job.
2
The rating, reversed
What approximately 1000 cubic metres looks like as floor area in your house
Here is the single most useful way to hold this, and almost nobody publishes it. The Vaayu's approximately 1000m³ is 35,300 cubic feet of air. Divide that by your own ceiling height and you get the floor area that rating genuinely corresponds to in your house: about 3,500 sq ft at a 10 ft ceiling, about 2,900 sq ft at 12 ft, about 2,500 sq ft at 14 ft, about 2,200 sq ft at 16 ft and about 1,750 sq ft at 20 ft. The machine has not changed and neither has the honesty of the number - what changes is that a square-foot figure is meaningless without the height beside it, which is exactly why the coverage claims you read elsewhere in square feet should be treated with suspicion. Now do your own house. A tall villa with a connected ground run of 1,400 sq ft at 12 ft is 16,800 cubic feet, about 476m³. A stair void with a 100 sq ft footprint rising through 24 ft adds 2,400 cubic feet, about 68m³. A landing and passage of 200 sq ft at 12 ft adds another 2,400 cubic feet, about 68m³. Total roughly 612m³ of genuinely connected air. The same house with 10 ft ceilings would come to about 511m³, so those two extra feet quietly added about 101m³ - and both figures sit comfortably inside one machine, which is the reassuring part. The height is a reason to count carefully, not a reason to buy twice. And if you do not know your ceiling height, measure it: a standard door leaf is about 7 ft, so stand a photograph against the wall in your head and count door heights, or borrow a tape and a step ladder for five minutes. It is the most valuable five minutes in this whole process.
3
The consequences
Two decisions follow, and neither of them is a bigger machine
Once the volume is counted, tall ceilings change exactly two things about how you run the house, and leave everything else alone. One: place it low. Warm air is less dense, so it rises, and a fine airborne dispersion from a cold-air machine goes wherever the air goes. Release it near the floor and it travels upward through the zone where people sit, stand and greet each other before it reaches the top of the room. Release it high - a gallery rail, a mezzanine ledge, the top of a tall cabinet - and it goes straight into the upper part of the volume, which in a tall room is architecture rather than a space anybody occupies, and very little of it comes back down. That is the most expensive mistake available in a tall house, and it is always made with good intentions, because the instinct is that height means reach. Height does not reach further; it reaches emptier. Console or shelf height, roughly two to three feet off the floor, inside the connected volume, in open air rather than shut in a cabinet, and out of the direct blast of a split air-conditioner. Two: start earlier, never stronger. More air takes longer to reach an even level, so a block that begins in the mid-afternoon leaves the house settled by evening, while a block that begins at the doorbell leaves a tall room still filling. Settled air is precisely the quality people describe as luxurious. A slow ceiling fan genuinely helps, because gentle circulation carries a fine dispersion evenly and brings some of the warm upper air back down; anything forceful and directional does not. And what does not change: the closed doors. A 250 sq ft bedroom at a 10 ft ceiling is about 71m³ of sealed air, and at a 12 ft ceiling it is 3,000 cubic feet, about 85m³ - taller, still sealed, still unreachable by any machine at any setting. A reed at ₹749 or a Boond ₹899 answers it; four bedrooms brings the house to ₹14,995.
Tip: height changes the sum and the placement. It does not change the two-layer rule, and it does not justify a second machine.
The SOSA principle
Your ceiling height is the most important number in this decision and it appears on no document you own. Measure it once, multiply, and the machine chooses itself.
600 sq ft is 170 cubic metres at 10 ft and 340 at 20 ft. The rating is a volume; a square-foot claim without a ceiling height beside it means nothing.

Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. A home is not a lobby you pass through. Households include children, elderly parents, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than any visitor does, which is why gentle dosing is the default at home and why the settings we suggest are lower than the machine can run. Anyone in the house reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with - turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Vaayu runs waterless nebulising oil and comes with the four hotel-inspired blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have sized this for houses across India, and I would rather tell you honestly that your layout needs two answers than sell you one machine that disappoints you. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your home's approximate size, the number of floors and a line about the layout - open plan, closed rooms, central air-conditioning or split units - and we will give you a free sizing recommendation. Your home gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure my ceiling height without climbing a ladder?
Use a door as your ruler. A standard internal door leaf in an Indian home is about 7 ft, so stand at the doorway, look at how much wall sits above the frame and estimate it against the door itself: roughly half a door above the frame puts you near 10 or 11 ft, a full door above the frame puts you near 14. Most phones now include a measuring tool that works well enough for this, and a builder's drawing will usually state the floor-to-ceiling height if you still have the file. Precision is not the point here. The difference between 10 ft and 12 ft changes your volume by a fifth and is worth knowing; the difference between 11 ft 6 in and 12 ft changes nothing you would ever notice. If your house has different heights in different parts, which is common where a living room has been given extra height, measure the tall part separately and add the rooms up individually rather than averaging.
Does a taller room need a stronger setting to smell the same?
It needs a longer run rather than a stronger one, and the distinction is the whole discipline. Intensity governs how much is being released at any moment; run time governs how evenly the volume has settled. A tall room simply holds more air, so it takes longer to reach an even level, and the correct response is to move the start time back into the afternoon and leave the setting alone. Raising the intensity to force a tall room to smell strong overdoses the part of that room where people actually are, which is the lower six feet of it, and a household breathes this air for hours rather than passing through it. Gentle dosing is the default at home, particularly with children, elderly parents, someone pregnant or pets in the house, and anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal to turn it down rather than something to work around.
Our ceilings are 12 ft throughout and the house is 3,000 sq ft. Is one machine enough?
Almost certainly, because the figure that matters is not the 3,000 sq ft. Walk from your front door and note every handle you turn; everything you passed through freely is the connected volume, and in a 3,000 sq ft villa that is typically a 1,200 to 1,500 sq ft run of entrance, living, dining and passage rather than the whole plan. At a 12 ft ceiling, 1,500 sq ft is 18,000 cubic feet, about 510 cubic metres, and adding a stair void and an open landing might bring it to around 650. The Vaayu is rated at approximately 1000 cubic metres, so one machine holds that gently rather than at full stretch. The bedrooms, which are what make up the rest of your 3,000 sq ft, are sealed air behind doors and take a reed from Rs 749 each. If your ground floor is genuinely one enormous open run rather than a set of connected rooms, send the layout to us on WhatsApp and we will do the sum with you before you buy anything.
Would a reed diffuser or an ultrasonic work in a room with a high ceiling?
A reed will not, and we would rather say so than take Rs 749 for something that will disappoint you. A reed diffuser releases fragrance by evaporation into the air immediately around its sticks and has no mechanism for moving anything across a room, let alone up twelve or twenty feet, so in a tall hall it scents the console it stands on. That is not a fault; it is simply the wrong room, and a reed remains the better object inside a bedroom, where it is silent, needs no power and asks nothing of the person sleeping beside it. An ultrasonic is a genuine middle answer with an honest ceiling of its own: a Megh 6L at Rs 3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 will hold one bounded room of ordinary height, around 170 cubic metres, through a whole evening on a fill, and it is the right purchase for that room. Asked to hold 340 or 600 cubic metres of tall connected air it will read thin by the end of the evening, which is where the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 belongs.
Does the height mean fragrance reaches the upstairs more easily?
It helps the mechanism and it does not change the limits, which is worth separating. A tall connected space with an open stair void gives convection a longer and cleaner vertical path, so the current that carries the register upward is if anything stronger than in a house with standard ceilings, and a gallery or mezzanine open to that void tends to read as a softer version of the hall below with nothing added. What the extra height also does is add air that has to be brought to an even level first, so the practical effect is that a tall house rewards an earlier schedule more than a low one does. The limit is untouched: the current serves the landing and any space genuinely open to it, and stops at every door off it. A bedroom at a 12 ft ceiling is a slightly larger sealed box than the same bedroom at 10 ft, and it still takes a reed at Rs 749 or a Boond at Rs 899 inside the room.

Facts verified August 2026: The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine covering approximately 1000m³, with Bluetooth app and timer scheduling. It ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box, chosen as one of three bundles at purchase: Bundle A - Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired, St. Regis Inspired, 1 Hotels Inspired; Bundle B - Westin Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired, Four Seasons Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired; Bundle C - St. Regis Inspired, W Hotels Inspired, 1 Hotels Inspired, Four Seasons Inspired. Format distinction: the Vaayu and the HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil, while the separate SOSA Hotel Collection fragrance (15ml ₹299) is water-based and runs in the ultrasonic machines only - Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh (₹3,499). The two fragrance formats are not interchangeable, and the Hotel Collection bottle does not go into a Vaayu. SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 sq ft and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively, ducted into central air-conditioning. Reed diffusers need no power and make no noise: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml from ₹1,249; duo sets ₹1,498, ₹1,548 and ₹1,598. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than a partitioned floor plan. Ventilation, cleaning and air-conditioning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept home and never a substitute for any of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Ongoing fragrance supply is arranged with SOSA on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
