In those cases you are answering two separate problems and two units make sense. Rule one
A machine serves a volume of air, not a number of rooms
The counting mistake is to think in rooms, because that is how we think about houses. Air does not. A machine disperses into the body of air it stands in, and that fragrance travels as far as the air itself circulates - through open arches, along passages, up a stair void - and stops dead at every closed door. So the unit of counting is the connected volume, and the way to find yours is to walk the house from the front door and note every handle you have to turn. In the overwhelming majority of Indian villas, however large, the answer is one connected volume: the entrance opens into the living, which opens into the dining, with a passage joining them and a stair rising out of the middle. That is one job for one Vaayu at ₹11,999. A 4,000 sq ft house and a 2,000 sq ft house frequently have the same answer, because the extra square footage went into bedrooms, and bedrooms are behind doors. Square footage is a poor predictor of how many machines you need; layout is the only honest one.

Rule two
Every shut door is a separate problem with a Rs 749 answer
Once you have counted your connected volume, count the doors that are closed when the house is in use in the evening. In a large villa that is usually five to eight: four or five bedrooms, two or three bathrooms, a study, sometimes a puja room or a home gym. Each of those is a sealed volume of its own, and it is worth being blunt about the consequence - no machine at any price pushes fragrance into them, so buying a bigger machine, or a second one, changes nothing about any of those rooms. What does work costs very little per room. A second machine needs a second volume to justify it
There are real cases where two machines is the right answer, and they all have the same shape: a second body of air that does not share with the first. The clearest is a sealed upper floor - a landing with a door at the top of the stairs, or a first-floor family lounge that is genuinely shut off - because the stair void, which normally does your vertical distribution for free, has been closed. In those cases you are buying for two volumes rather than doubling one, and the arithmetic makes sense. What should stop you is the other version: a second unit in the same connected volume, which mostly makes the house stronger rather than larger, and stronger is not the target at home. Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. A home is not a lobby you pass through. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. Frequently asked questions
My villa is 5,000 sq ft. Surely that needs more than one machine?
It needs more than one answer, which is not the same thing. Measure the connected part - entrance, living, dining, passage, stair void, open landing - and you will usually find that even a 5,000 sq ft house has 1,800 to 2,200 sq ft of it, which at a 10 ft ceiling is 18,000 to 22,000 cubic feet, about 510 to 623 cubic metres, comfortably inside one Vaayu at Rs 11,999. The extra square footage in a house that size has gone into bedrooms, bathrooms and utility spaces, all of which sit behind doors, and all of which are answered at Rs 749 to Rs 899 each rather than by another machine. The exception is a house with a genuinely sealed second volume, or one where you want every room scented regardless of doors, and that is the ducted Aangan at Rs 25,999 rather than multiple standalone units.
Would a second machine at least make the house smell stronger?
Yes, and that is precisely the reason to avoid it. Stronger is not the goal at home; even is. A household breathes this air for hours a day and may include children, elderly parents, someone pregnant or pets, so the correct level is one where a guest reads the house as welcoming without being able to name a note - and you reach that by running one machine gently across a volume it holds easily, not by adding output. Two units in one connected volume also produce an uneven result, because you now have two strong zones and a middle, which is the opposite of what a system is for. How do I count a house where the doors are open during the day and shut at night?
Count for the moment that matters most to you, and then cover the other one cheaply. Most Indian households run exactly this pattern: bedroom doors open in the afternoon, shut by ten at night. That means those rooms pick up some of the house register during the day and none of it when people are actually in them. If what you care about is guests arriving in the evening, count them as shut and give each a reed from Rs 749 - which is the honest recommendation, because it costs little and it works precisely when the machine cannot reach. If what you care about is the house feeling coherent in the daytime, you will find the open-door hours already do a lot of that work for you, and the reeds simply keep it going after the doors close.
Is one machine per floor a sensible rule in a two-storey villa?
It is a rule of thumb that costs people money, because it assumes the two floors are separate volumes when usually they are not. A stair void behaves like a chimney: warm air rises through it, so a unit placed low in the connected ground-floor volume near the base of the stairs carries its register up to the landing on its own, and what arrives is gentler than downstairs, which is generally welcome. That covers the connected part of the upper floor without a second machine. What it does not cover is a bedroom with its door shut on that landing, and a second machine on the landing would not cover it either. The rule only becomes true when the stairs are closed off by a door at the top, which genuinely creates two volumes and genuinely justifies two units.
What if I already bought two machines before reading this?
Put them in two different connected volumes and you will get value from both. The obvious pairs are ground floor and a sealed upper landing or family lounge, main house and annexe, or main floor and a basement lounge that stays shut. If your house genuinely has only one connected volume, the better use of the second unit is to move it into a large room that is often closed off - a home theatre, a study you actually work in, a big guest room used at Diwali - rather than doubling up in the same open floor. And run both gently rather than at the settings you might have chosen for one: two machines in a house is a reason to lower intensity, not to raise it.
