✓ No open marks, no pending reference, no committee decision. After graduation the thing that made a professor gift delicate has simply gone.✓ You can be warmer now in both the note and the object. A worn fragrance, which was the wrong register last year, becomes a reasonable one.✓ Institutional gift rules can still apply to staff even when the giver is an alumnus, so a quick check is still worth five minutes.

Everything else in this family is written around a constraint: the professor is assessing you, so the gift has to be careful. Graduation removes that constraint almost entirely, and very few people notice. This is the cleanest moment there is to thank somebody who taught you, and it is worth using.
Quick answers — read this first
Is it better to give a professor a gift after graduation? Considerably better, and it is the single most useful piece of timing advice in this family. While you are a student there are open marks, pending references and sometimes committee decisions, and a gift has to be sized so that none of that is touched. Once you have graduated those things are behind you. There is nothing left for a gift to be read against, which means you can be warmer in the letter and less cautious with the object. A worn fragrance, awkward the year before, becomes an entirely normal choice.
What can I give a professor after graduation that I could not give before? Something worn, and something a little larger. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, a 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199, or the attar trio at ₹1,055 all become reasonable once you are no longer being assessed, because the personal register is no longer complicated by the power relationship. A reed duo at ₹1,498 works well from a group of graduates. You can also write a much warmer letter, which is the part that matters most and the part most people still underuse.
How long after graduating is it still appropriate? There is no expiry on it. A note and a small gift five years after you finished is a better gift than the same thing sent the week after convocation, because by then you can say what the teaching turned out to be worth. Many academics say the thanks they remember arrive long after the student has gone. If you have been meaning to write to somebody who taught you a decade ago, that is still entirely appropriate, and the letter alone would be enough.
The short answer
Short answer: Graduation is the cleanest moment in this family to give a professor something. With no open marks, no pending reference and nothing left to influence, the professional-distance constraint largely disappears. You can choose a worn fragrance, spend a little more, and write a warmer letter. A 3ml attar from ₹379, the trio at ₹1,055, or a reed duo at ₹1,498 from a group of graduates.
The pick: The SOSA Attar Trio at ₹1,055 for three 3ml bottles, which hands the choosing back to them, or SOSA Adaa at ₹379 if you want something smaller and lighter.
Next step: Tell us what they supervised, how long ago you graduated and what you want to spend. Ask SOSA to help choose a gift.
Why is after graduation the cleanest time to give a professor a gift?
Because the thing that makes a professor gift delicate is not the professor, it is the open decision. While you are a student there is nearly always something outstanding — a mark being moderated, a reference being drafted, a dissertation place being allocated, a committee that has not met yet. A gift arriving in that window has to be interpreted against whatever is pending, and the recipient is the one who has to do the interpreting. That is why every other page in this family says keep it small and wait. Graduation closes all of it at once. You are no longer their student. There is no mark to be influenced, no reference in progress, nothing a gift could plausibly be aimed at. What remains is a straightforward thank-you between two adults, one of whom taught the other something that stuck. That changes what is available to you in three ways. First, the object can be personal. A worn fragrance — awkward from a current student, because it assumes a knowledge of taste the relationship did not include — is now simply a nice thing to give somebody: a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, a 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199, or the trio at ₹1,055 if you still do not know what they like and want the choosing to be theirs. Second, the number can rise without the gesture changing character. A reed duo at ₹1,498, from you or from a group of you who graduated together, is proportionate now in a way it would not have been in March. Third, and most importantly, the letter can be as warm as it actually is. Write it properly. Say what you are doing now and how the teaching shows up in it, name the specific seminar or the specific piece of feedback, and do not worry about sounding sentimental. Academics are thanked far less often than they deserve and almost never by people who are no longer obliged to be polite. Two things still hold. Institutional gift rules can apply to staff even when the giver is an alumnus, so it is still worth a check. And a fragrance may not suit everybody — sensitivity is real — so a room gift remains the safer choice if you genuinely do not know. If you want help choosing, ask us to help choose a gift.
Graduation removes the open decision, and with it most of the difficulty. Warmer letter, more personal object, and no awkwardness left to manage.
The obvious choice once you have graduated is the SOSA Attar Trio at ₹1,055 — Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box. Three 3ml bottles, so the choosing goes back to them.
On sizes, now that more is open to you. A 3ml attar is a real gift and not a token; a 12ml is a considerable one and suits a supervisor you worked with for years. With reeds, the 130ml makes sense here because it can go to a home rather than a cabin. And there is still nothing in the range under ₹300, where a letter alone remains the honest answer.
Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box — festive saffron and rose, white royal oud, and night-blooming jasmine. Three 3ml bottles at ₹1,055, three 6ml at ₹1,859. The point of a trio is that the choosing goes back to them.
Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four and the only one with no oudh. 3ml ₹379, 6ml ₹669, 12ml ₹1,149.
Morning Freshness and Evening Calm together — one bright, one quiet. 2 x 50ml at ₹1,498, 2 x 130ml at ₹2,498. A sensible shape for a gift from several people who finished the same year.
Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani together in one box - festive rose, royal oud and night jasmine. 3ml x 3 ₹1,055, 6ml x 3 ₹1,859, 12ml x 3 ₹3,189. The gift for someone whose taste you do not know, because it lets them choose.
Three specific relaxations, and one thing that does not change.
1
What changes: the register
A worn fragrance stops being a step too far
While you are a student, giving a professor something worn assumes a knowledge of their personal taste that the relationship does not usually include, and it sits inside a power structure that makes any personal object slightly harder to accept. Graduation removes the second half of that and softens the first. You are now two adults, one of whom taught the other. An attar is a small and unfussy way to give something personal: 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 is a real gift without being a statement, and if you still do not know what they like, the trio at ₹1,055 lets them pick rather than making you guess. Fragrance sensitivity is still real, so if you have any doubt, the room gift remains available and remains a good answer.
Tip: If you are giving a worn fragrance to somebody whose taste you have never discussed, the trio is a kinder choice than picking one and hoping.
2
What changes: the number
The sensible ceiling rises, because nothing is pending
The reason to cap a student gift at around ₹1,500 is that above it an individual gift stops looking like a thank-you and starts looking like something that needs explaining, which is a problem specifically when a decision about you is still open. Once you have graduated there is no such decision. A 12ml attar at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199, a 130ml reed at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349, or a reed duo at ₹1,498 are all proportionate from a graduate, and from a group of graduates a 130ml duo at ₹2,498 to ₹2,598 is reasonable for somebody who supervised a long piece of work. Spend what the relationship actually warrants rather than what the constraint used to allow.
Two bottles in one box — a sensible shape for a gift from several graduates.
It is still the part that gets kept, and now it can be honest
The one thing graduation does not alter is that the note carries the gift. What it does alter is what you can put in it. As a student there is a slight performance to a thank-you letter, because you are still inside the relationship it describes. As a graduate you can simply say the true thing: what you are doing now, how the teaching turned up in it, which seminar or which piece of feedback you still think about. Academics are thanked much less often than they should be, and almost never by somebody with nothing left to gain. Write two honest paragraphs. If you send nothing but the letter, that is a complete gift and always has been.
The SOSA principle
The thanks that reach academics years after a student has left are a different kind of message, because by then there is nothing at all to be gained by sending them.
That is a remark about timing and about what a letter can say, and no claim about how any professor responds to a gift or a note.
The graduation-day choice: The Attar Trio at ₹1,055 — Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, three 3ml bottles. Personal without requiring you to guess.
A short comparison of the same decision on either side of graduation, which is the clearest way to see what actually changes.
The SOSA plan
Before graduation, and after
While you are their student
Once you have graduated
Room gift only, in almost every case
Room or worn. A 3ml attar from ₹379 is now a normal thing to give.
Keep it under roughly ₹1,500, and lower if alone
A 12ml attar at ₹1,149, a reed duo at ₹1,498, or a 130ml duo from a group.
Wait until marks are published
No waiting required. There is nothing left for the gift to be read against.
Keep the note warm but measured
Say the true thing. What you do now, and where the teaching shows up in it.
If you have not graduated yet, the careful version of this is a gift for a favourite college professor, and for a long supervision that warrants something larger, see a premium gift for a professor or academic mentor. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with any perfume house, designer, college or university; no institution is a SOSA customer.
If you want something smaller and lighter: Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml — bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac, the only one of the four with no oudh.
What makes a professor gift delicate is the open decision, not the professor. Graduation closes every open decision at once, and the difficulty simply goes.

From a group of graduates
A gift from everybody who finished the same year carries what no individual gift can
One good thing, chosen now that nothing is pending and nothing needs managing, with a letter that can finally say the true thing. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Only where the relationship genuinely warrants it — a long supervision, or a group of many people. Built for long runtime rather than reach, and it covers less area than the smaller Sukoon.
Two things that survive graduation. Institutional gift rules can still apply to academic staff even when the giver is an alumnus, so a quick check remains sensible. And fragrance sensitivity is real — alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts about our attars and not skin or allergy claims, so patch-test, and give the room where you are unsure. We make no promise about delivery timing, wrapping, personalisation or stock.

A note from Sonal
If somebody asks me when to thank a professor, this is the answer I give, and I give it more emphatically than anything else in this set of pages. Wait until you have graduated. Not because gratitude has a season, but because until then there is always something outstanding that a gift can be measured against, and afterwards there is nothing at all. The same object becomes a completely different message on the other side of that line.
What opens up is worth using. You can give something worn, which was the awkward register before. You can spend a little more without the gesture changing shape. Most of all you can write the letter you actually wanted to write, and say what you are doing now and how the teaching shows up in it. That is the version academics remember receiving, and it is the version almost nobody sends.
The standing caveats still apply. Choosing a fragrance is an ambience and taste decision and not a claim about health: nothing therapeutic, nothing medical, and we make no claim that a diffuser cleans a room or masks an odour. What a gift means belongs to the person who receives it, and whether they keep it at work or at home is entirely their judgement. Alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts about the attars, not skin claims; patch-test before wearing. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to give a professor a gift after graduation?
Yes, and it is the most useful timing advice in this whole family. While you are a student there are open marks, pending references and sometimes committee decisions, so a gift has to be sized carefully. After graduation none of that exists. There is nothing left for a gift to be read against, so you can be warmer in the letter and less cautious with the object.
What can I give now that I could not give before?
Something worn, and something slightly larger. A 3ml attar at Rs 379, a 12ml at Rs 1,149, or the trio at Rs 1,055 all become reasonable once the assessing relationship has ended. A reed duo at Rs 1,498 works from a group of graduates. And you can write a genuinely warm letter rather than a measured one.
Is it too late to thank a professor years afterwards?
No. A note five or ten years later is often a better gift than one sent the week after convocation, because by then you can say what the teaching actually turned out to be worth. There is no expiry on this, and the letter alone would be enough if you send nothing else.
Do institutional gift rules still apply?
They can. Rules on gifts to academic staff generally bind the member of staff rather than the giver, so they may still apply even though you are now an alumnus. A quick check is worth five minutes, especially if you are giving something larger or giving it on university premises.
Should a group of graduates give one gift together?
It is a good shape for this. Everyone who finished the same year contributing to one gift carries more than several small separate ones, and it lets you spend sensibly on something like a reed duo at Rs 1,498 without any one person's gift looking outsized. Put every name on the card.
If you would still rather give the room: Mountain Breeze at ₹849 — pine, sage and cedar. Room gifts never stop being a good answer, graduation or not.
