Fragrance strength is what a perfumer controls. It is the concentration of aromatic material, the choice of raw materials, the balance between the parts that announce themselves immediately and the parts that hold on for hours, and the overall body a composition has. You can assess it without any equipment: open the bottle, smell the reeds, notice whether the fragrance has depth or thins out after a second. It travels with the bottle, so a strong oil is strong in Kochi and strong in Shimla and strong in a shop. What it never contains is any information about your room, because a liquid has no idea how much air it is about to be asked to fill or how fast that air is being replaced. This is the variable most people believe they are shopping for when they type stronger diffuser into a search bar, and it is almost never the variable they are actually unhappy about.
Tip: you can test fragrance strength anywhere, which is exactly why it tells you nothing about your room.

Diffusion strength: everything the delivery method decides
Diffusion strength is what an engineer controls, and it answers a different question: once the fragrance exists, what gets it into the air and out to you. A passive system answers nothing - it waits. Oil climbs the reeds, evaporates from the wet surface at the pace the room's warmth and air movement set, and then depends entirely on the room's own currents to go anywhere at all. An active system answers the question directly, by adding energy: an ultrasonic vibrating plate throwing a fine mist outward, or cold diffusion breaking undiluted oil into a dispersion and releasing it. That energy is what converts a gradient around a bottle into a presence across a space, and it is the only thing that does. Notice that this variable is entirely indifferent to which fragrance you loaded into it. Put a magnificent oil into a passive system and you get magnificence in a small radius; put a modest one into an active system and it will be everywhere. The two axes genuinely do not communicate.

They multiply, which is why the wrong purchase fails twice
Think of what you actually experience as the product of the two: fragrance strength multiplied by diffusion strength, evaluated at wherever you happen to be standing. Near a reed diffuser, the diffusion term is respectable because you are inside the source's own little cloud, so a fine oil reads beautifully. Across the room the diffusion term collapses toward zero, and anything multiplied by something near zero is near zero no matter how impressive the first number is. This is the mathematics behind the most common wasted purchase in home fragrance: buying up on the first term to fix a collapse in the second. It cannot work, and it fails in a particularly annoying way, because the diffuser really does smell better when you lean over it, which makes the reader doubt their own nose rather than their diagnosis. Buy on the axis that is failing. If it is character, buy a different register; if it is reach, buy an ultrasonic or the waterless Safar.

Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Those are genuine engineering virtues and they are the direct consequence of being passive, not a compromise around it. The mistake is only ever one of expectation: asking a product built for presence to deliver distribution. Judge it on the axis it was designed for and it is excellent, which is why our own advice in half the rooms we are asked about is to keep the reed and change nothing.
Does this apply to candles and sprays too?
The framework applies to everything, and it is a useful lens when you are comparing formats. A candle adds a little diffusion strength through the warmth of its flame moving air upward, which is why a candle often reads as more present than a reed of similar quality - but the effect is small and local, and it stops when you blow it out. A spray gives you a burst of very high concentration that disperses and fades within minutes, because there is no continuous source at all. Neither has a mechanism for holding a room at a level over hours. That is what an active diffuser is for, and it is why the format question matters more than the fragrance question when the complaint is about coverage rather than character.
Can I raise the diffusion strength of the reed diffuser I already own?
You can raise the evaporation rate a little and you can improve where the fragrance meets you, and both are worth doing before spending anything. Use all the reeds supplied, flip them about once a week, move the bottle out of a direct draught and away from a window, put it at roughly seated or lying nose height rather than on the floor, and place it in the part of the room you actually occupy. What all of that does is optimise a passive system, which is genuinely worthwhile and often makes people much happier. What none of it does is add energy, so the far side of the room stays as it was. The honest ceiling on placement is real, and knowing where it sits saves you from expecting the next adjustment to be the one that works.
Why is the ultrasonic cheaper than the waterless diffuser if it does more?
It does a different thing rather than more, and the pricing reflects the technology rather than the ambition. An ultrasonic uses a vibrating plate to throw a water-and-oil mist into the room, which is an inexpensive and effective way to distribute fragrance across a single ordinary bedroom, and at Rs 899 for the Boond or Rs 1,899 for the Sukoon with a Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299 it is genuinely the cheaper answer for that job. The cost of that route is the water itself: added humidity, some dilution of the scent, and in hard-water areas a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. The waterless SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 removes the water entirely and diffuses pure undiluted oil, which is a different and more expensive engineering path, and it is aimed at the personal space you occupy rather than at filling a whole room.
How do I know which axis my problem is on?
Ask yourself one question: when you stand right next to the diffuser, are you happy? If the answer is yes and your complaint is that the rest of the room is not like that, your problem is entirely on the diffusion axis, and a different oil will not touch it. If the answer is no - if you do not much like the fragrance even up close, or it has gone flat, or it is not the character you hoped for - then your problem is on the strength and character axis, and a different register is exactly the right purchase.
