Yes, and it is one of the few genuinely useful things you can say about reed diffusers without any hedging. Warmth raises the rate at which oil evaporates from the reeds, so a bottle in a warm room releases more fragrance per hour and reads as stronger where it stands. That is the good news, and it comes with a bill attached, and it explains something that puzzles a great many people in India every year: why the bottle you loved in December seems to have lost its nerve by February, or why the one you bought in May was gone before you expected it.
Quick answers — read this first
Does a reed diffuser smell stronger in a warm room? Yes, at and around the bottle. Evaporation is temperature-driven, so the warmer the air touching the reeds, the more oil leaves them per hour and the more fragrance goes into the room. A reed diffuser in an un-airconditioned room in a Delhi or Chennai May is genuinely releasing more than the same bottle in an air-conditioned bedroom in December. The trade is direct and unavoidable: the extra output comes out of the same bottle, so it empties faster. A SOSA reed lasts about six to ten weeks, and warmth is one of the main reasons some people land at the short end of that range and others at the long end. What warmth does not do is give the scent any way to travel further, because nothing is carrying it.
Why does my reed diffuser smell different in summer and winter? Because the room changed, not the bottle. In an Indian summer an un-airconditioned room runs warm, evaporation rises, and the diffuser is livelier and shorter-lived. In an air-conditioned room, or in a cool December, the air is cooler and drier, evaporation falls, and the same bottle is quieter and lasts longer. Add the fact that a summer room usually has a ceiling fan running all day, which strips scented air away as fast as it is made, and the seasonal swing gets wider still. This is why people so often think a newly bought bottle is weaker than the last one, when what actually happened is that the season turned. Same fragrance, same reeds, different physics.
Should I put my reed diffuser somewhere warm on purpose? A normally warm spot is fine and helpful; a hot one is a mistake. Never place a reed diffuser in direct sunlight, on a window ledge that catches the sun, or on a hot surface such as the top of a fridge, a television console that runs warm, or beside a heater. Direct sun and concentrated heat push evaporation up sharply, so the bottle drains far faster than it should, and heat and light can affect the oil itself over time, changing how the fragrance reads. The sensible version is ordinary room warmth in a sheltered, shaded, still spot at roughly seated nose height. That gives you a healthy evaporation rate without cooking the bottle, and it is the placement we would recommend in any season.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes, at the source. Evaporation from the reeds is temperature-driven, so a warm room draws more oil into the air per hour and the diffuser reads as stronger where it stands - and empties faster in return, which is part of why a reed lasts about six to ten weeks rather than a fixed number. It is why the same bottle behaves like two different products in an un-airconditioned Indian room in May and an air-conditioned one in December, and why people often think a new bottle is weak when the season simply changed. Warmth does not add reach, because nothing carries the scent. Warning: never place a reed diffuser in direct sunlight or on a hot surface near a window - that accelerates evaporation hard and can affect the oil. Nothing has gone wrong with your reed diffuser. A reed is a passive system: the oil climbs the sticks and evaporates at whatever rate your room's warmth and air movement allow, and no part of it pushes scent anywhere. That is exactly why it is lovely at arm's length and quiet across the room. What has changed is what you now want from it. Ambience near where the bottle stands is one job; a whole room that smells of it, or a strong true scent right where you sit, is a different job, and a different job needs a different tool. This guide explains the mechanism first, then tells you honestly which tool matches which wish.
Does warmth genuinely make a reed diffuser stronger, and what does it cost?
Genuinely yes, with a genuine bill. 1. Warmth raises the evaporation rate. Oil leaves the reeds faster when the air touching them is warmer, so the same bottle puts more fragrance into a warm room than a cool one, hour for hour. That is why the air around the bottle reads as stronger in an Indian summer than in an air-conditioned December bedroom. 2. The extra output comes out of the same bottle. There is no free fragrance. A livelier diffuser is a shorter-lived one, which is why a reed lasts about six to ten weeks rather than a single fixed figure - warm months sit nearer the short end, cool and air-conditioned months nearer the long end. 3. It changes strength, not reach. More evaporation makes a stronger source. It adds no force to carry scent outward, so the far corner of a warm room is still the far corner. Passive is passive at every temperature. 4. The Indian version of this catches everyone. The same bottle in an un-airconditioned room in May and an air-conditioned one in December behaves like two different products, and the summer room usually has a fan running that strips scented air away as fast as it is produced. When people tell us a new bottle seems weaker than the last, the season has very often turned in between. 5. One hard warning. Never put a reed diffuser in direct sunlight or on a hot surface near a window. Direct sun and concentrated heat accelerate evaporation sharply and can affect the oil itself. Shaded, sheltered, ordinary room warmth at roughly seated nose height is the placement you want. Keep the reed from ₹749 doing that job. If you want the whole room scented rather than the space around the bottle, an active Boond ₹899 or Sukoon ₹1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 is the cheaper honest upgrade, with added humidity, some dilution and possible white dust where water is hard. What warmth gives you, what it takes, and where it becomes a problem
The mechanism, the seasonal swing that fools everybody, and the one place warmth turns harmful.
Why this happens in your room
Warmth buys you strength at the bottle and pays for it in weeks
Keep the reed where it already works, from ₹749. If you want the whole room, an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection is the honest and cheaper first upgrade. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is waterless and cordless.
Temperature is the dial a reed diffuser does not have
A reed diffuser has no settings. There is no intensity control, no timer and no switch, and that is exactly why temperature matters so much: the room is holding the dial. Oil climbs the sticks by capillary action and then evaporates into whatever air is in contact with them, and evaporation is a temperature-driven process. Warm the air and more molecules gather enough energy to leave the surface, so more fragrance enters the room every hour. Cool the air and fewer do. Nothing about the bottle, the oil or the reeds has changed in either case. This is the honest reason a diffuser feels lively in a warm sitting room and reticent in an air-conditioned bedroom, and it is also why the same bottle can seem to wake up when the AC goes off for the night and the room drifts back to ambient. If you have ever thought your reed diffuser has moods, this is what you were noticing. It is not the fragrance being inconsistent. It is your room turning an invisible dial that the manufacturer never gave you.
Tip: your room owns the intensity control on a reed diffuser - temperature is most of it, air movement is the rest.

The bill
A livelier bottle is a shorter one, and India makes that dramatic
Nothing produces extra fragrance from nowhere. Everything you smell has come out of the bottle, so a higher evaporation rate is simply the bottle being spent faster. That is the whole reason we describe a SOSA reed as lasting about six to ten weeks rather than quoting a single number, because the number belongs to your room rather than to the product. India makes this range unusually wide. A bottle opened in an un-airconditioned Chennai or Nagpur flat in May is working in genuinely hot air, with a ceiling fan turning all day, and it will run at the short end. The identical bottle opened in an air-conditioned Bengaluru bedroom in December is in cool, dry, slow air and will sit at the long end, smelling quieter throughout. Neither is faulty and neither is better value; they are the same product living two different lives. The practical consequence is worth planning around. If you want a particular fragrance for a particular season, expect the summer bottle to be more present and to need replacing sooner, and expect the winter one to whisper and to last.

The warning
Direct sun and hot surfaces are a different thing entirely
There is a large difference between a warm room and a hot spot, and this is the one placement rule in this article that is not about performance. Never stand a reed diffuser in direct sunlight, on a window ledge that catches the afternoon sun, or on a surface that runs warm on its own: the top of a fridge, a set-top box or a console with electronics under it, a shelf above a stove, or anywhere near a heater. Two things happen there. First, evaporation accelerates hard rather than gently, so the bottle drains at a rate that has nothing to do with how much fragrance you actually got to enjoy, and much of it evaporates during the hours nobody is in the room. Second, sustained heat and strong light can affect the oil itself over time, so the fragrance can start to read differently from the one you bought. Neither is a fault in the product; both are avoidable in about ten seconds by moving the bottle. Shaded, sheltered, ordinary room temperature, at roughly the height your nose occupies when you are sitting, out of the AC's throw and away from the window - that is the placement that gets the best of warmth without any of its damage. If you want more than the best a bottle can give, that is a machine question, not a temperature one: an ultrasonic for the whole room, or the waterless Safar for strong scent where you sit.
Tip: warm room yes, hot spot no - direct sun accelerates evaporation hard and can change how the oil reads.
The SOSA principle
Warmth makes a reed diffuser a stronger source, never a longer arm. It raises how much leaves the sticks; it adds nothing that carries the scent across the room.
Which is why the same bottle feels generous in May and shy in an air-conditioned December, and why neither version can reach the far corner.

Start where you already are. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are passive: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 and Fresh Brew ₹849, with 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. They give you ambience near where the bottle stands, with no power, no noise and nothing that can fail, and they are still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. If you want the room itself to smell of it, that needs an active diffuser: Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Megh ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, or the Pack of 7 at 15ml for ₹1,799). That is the honest first upgrade for a single ordinary bedroom, and it costs less than the Safar. Its trade-off, in our own words: an ultrasonic mixes the fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. If you would rather have no water at all and want the scent strong and true in the space you actually occupy, the SOSA Safar ₹3,999 is waterless, cordless and rechargeable, diffusing pure undiluted oil by cold diffusion. For a large room or a connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 is the genuine whole-space answer at approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, and it is honestly more machine than a small bedroom needs.

Your reed diffuser does not have moods. It has a room, and the room turns the dial - warmer means stronger and shorter, cooler means quieter and longer.

The SOSA edit, passive to active
Whatever your room looks like, the logic is the same, and it has nothing to do with how big or smart your home is. A passive reed gives you scent near where it stands, and that is genuinely the right answer for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. An active diffuser moves scent into the air instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it, which is the only thing that turns "lovely next to the bottle" into "the room smells of it". Every SOSA product is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one honestly belongs.

A personal-space diffuser with strong near-field projection, not a whole-room machine
Waterless cold-air to approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, Bluetooth app and timer, four hotel-inspired blends included. The genuine whole-space answer, and honestly oversized for a small bedroom

Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with: turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ship with their own blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only, and the two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have had this conversation hundreds of times, and I would much rather talk someone out of a purchase than sell them a disappointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and a line about where you actually sit or sleep in it - the bed, the desk, the sofa, the corner you read in - and we will tell you which of these you need, including when the answer is none of them. I read those messages myself. Everything is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your room gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.
Frequently asked questions
Is my new bottle weaker than the last one, or did the season change?
Nine times out of ten the season changed, and it is worth checking before you conclude anything about the fragrance. Ask yourself what the room was doing when you bought the previous bottle and what it is doing now. If the last one ran through March and April with no air conditioning and this one started when the AC went on, or if you bought the first in a warm September and the second in December, you are comparing the same product in two different sets of conditions. Warm air draws more oil off the reeds per hour, so the earlier bottle was genuinely putting more into the room and genuinely draining faster. There are two other easy checks. Has the bottle moved to a different spot, particularly nearer an AC vent, a door gap or a window. And has your own nose simply adapted to a fragrance you have been living with for weeks, which happens to everybody and is why a visitor's opinion is more reliable than yours.
Does humidity change how my reed diffuser performs?
It plays a part, mostly in how long scent seems to hang about rather than how much is produced. In humid monsoon air, scent tends to linger rather than settling out quickly, which is part of why a bathroom after a hot shower can feel almost saturated. In the dry, cooled air of an air-conditioned room, the same output disperses and reads as thinner. Temperature is still doing the heavier work of the two, because that is what sets the evaporation rate at the reeds, but the two often move together in Indian homes: the AC season is cool and dry at once, and the pre-monsoon season is hot and damp at once, so the swing you notice is both effects stacked. None of this is worth engineering around. Do not humidify a room for fragrance, and do not read a quiet December as a fault. Read it as the room, and choose your tool accordingly.
Should I move my reed diffuser somewhere warmer to get more out of it?
Move it somewhere sheltered rather than somewhere hot, and you will get most of the benefit without any of the harm. A spot at ordinary room temperature, out of the AC's direct throw, away from the gap under the door and the window, and at roughly the height your nose sits when you are seated, is the sweet spot: normal warmth, still air, and you in the strongest part of the gradient. What we would not do is chase heat. Direct sunlight, a sunny window ledge, the top of a fridge, a warm electronics console or anywhere near a heater will accelerate evaporation sharply and can affect the oil over time, so you spend the bottle quickly and may end up with a fragrance that reads differently from the one you chose. Warmth is a gentle helper, not a lever to pull hard.
Does an air conditioner make my reed diffuser useless?
Not useless, but quieter, and for two separate reasons that stack. The first is temperature: cooler air means a lower evaporation rate at the reeds, so less fragrance enters the room each hour. The second is air movement: a split AC throws a directed stream across the room, which carries scented air away from the bottle and prevents the slow build-up that a passive diffuser depends on. Placement fixes a good part of the second reason. Put the bottle on the far side of the room from the unit, sheltered behind a headboard or a cupboard, at nose height, and you will notice a real difference. It does not fix the first reason, because you are not going to run a bedroom warm for a diffuser. If you want dependable scent in an air-conditioned room, that is where an active diffuser earns its money, because its output does not depend on how cool you keep the room.
Does the same warmth effect apply to my car?
Yes, and more sharply than anywhere in the house, which is why car fragrance is so easy to overdo. A parked car in Indian sun gets genuinely hot, the cabin holds only a small body of air, and everything inside it is shut, so evaporation runs high while the scent has nowhere to disperse. That combination can turn a pleasant fragrance into far too much within minutes of getting in. The rule in any small hot space is gentle: something you notice on getting in and stop noticing shortly after is correctly dosed, and anything that gives a passenger a headache on a long drive is too much and should be turned down or moved. The SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 was designed for exactly this kind of personal space, being waterless, cordless and rechargeable, and it can be moved between the car, a desk and a bedside rather than living in the heat all day.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the passive-versus-active reasoning applies to any brand's products.
Facts verified August 2026: A reed diffuser is a passive system - oil travels up the reeds by capillary action and evaporates at the rate the room's temperature and air movement allow, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls away with distance. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Reed prices: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. An active diffuser adds energy to move fragrance into the air. SOSA's ultrasonic machines are Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh 6L (₹3,499); they run the water-based SOSA Hotel Collection, 15ml ₹299, 100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799. An ultrasonic mixes fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser with a 2000 mAh battery, diffusing pure undiluted oil with no water and no white dust; SOSA's own copy lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, work-from-home and gifting. It ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles: Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired; St. Regis Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired and Four Seasons Inspired; or W Hotels Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired and Westin Inspired. No square-foot or cubic-metre coverage figure is published for the Safar, so none is stated here or anywhere else by us; it is a personal-space diffuser, not a whole-room machine. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air system covering approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box. Format distinction: the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each arrive with their own blends, while the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and goes into the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than closed doors. Ventilation and cleaning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept room and never a substitute for either, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Questions about a specific room are answered on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
