The only room whose scent has to survive other people
A living room sets a brief no other room does. It is the largest single volume in most homes and often not a single volume at all — it turns a corner into the dining area, opens onto a passage, connects to a kitchen. It has a fan or an AC moving air through it. It fills with people, who each carry their own scent and each displace air. And it sits downwind of the most powerful smell-generating machine in the house, which is your hob. Whatever you choose has to be legible under all of that, which rules out anything delicate and, more usefully, rules out the assumption that a bedroom dose scaled up will work.
Then there is the earthy part, which pulls in the opposite direction. Jute and coir underfoot, cotton and linen upholstery, cane seating, matting, a wool throw — these absorb fragrance faster than almost any other domestic material, and they hand it back slowly over hours. So the same room simultaneously needs projection and punishes over-dosing. The resolution is not a compromise dose; it is a change of approach. Run a normal three drops for a short, timed period before the room is used, let the textiles charge, and then let them do the releasing for the rest of the evening. Dose, placement, and what to do about cooking
Three drops on a Sukoon is the working number for an earthy living room of 270 to 320 sq ft with a natural-fibre rug and fabric upholstery, and two is right if the room is small or unusually textile-heavy. Beyond about 320 sq ft, or wherever the room turns a corner, add a second machine rather than drops — ₹1,899 twice is the correct answer to an L-shaped living-dining, and it will read far better than one machine straining. A Boond (₹899, up to 150 sq ft) handles an adjoining study or entrance so the transition between spaces is not abrupt.
Placement decides how far it carries. Put the machine about a metre up — a console, a sideboard, a shelf — not on a low coffee table and never on the floor, where the mist falls straight into the rug and does very little else. Keep it out of the direct throw of a ceiling fan or AC, which will push the whole output against one wall, and keep it clear of the doorway to the kitchen. Never stand it directly on a raw mango-wood or teak surface; ultrasonic mist is water and it will raise the grain and leave a pale ring. Use a slate coaster, ceramic dish or metal tray, and do not aim it at cane screens, curtains, art or leather.
Cooking, honestly: you will not win that fight and should not try. Indian cooking puts a great deal of aromatic material into the air, it clings to exactly the porous textiles that hold your fragrance, and running a diffuser through it simply gives you a blend of the two. Extract while you cook, open something for ten minutes afterwards, and then run the diffuser for forty minutes — that sequence works. On the humidity point, an earthy living room in a coastal monsoon is already damp and the matting is already more vocal than usual, so shorten the run rather than lengthening it. In a dry winter, longer runs and a little added moisture are welcome. The living room is where I get the most complaints and the fewest accurate descriptions. People tell me the scent is too weak, and when I ask when they last smelled it, the answer is always: alone, in the afternoon, standing next to the machine. That is not the room they need it to work in.
