Everything written about stairwells and convection holds beautifully for two floors, and it starts to thin out at three. Each additional level means a longer path, more mixing and a fainter arrival, so by the top of a three or four-storey house the honest expectation is very little. This is the page where we say that plainly, and then set out the three answers that actually work above the second floor, with the arithmetic attached.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the best scent machine for a multi-storey home? For two floors, one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 placed low near the stair base, using the stair void as the distribution route. For three floors or more, that argument thins out and the honest answer splits in two. If the house runs on ducted central air-conditioning, the SOSA Aangan at Rs 25,999 nebulises into the ductwork and delivers one signature to approximately 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft across every floor the ducts serve, including rooms with their doors shut - the Meenar at Rs 38,500 covers approximately 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft. If the house runs on split units, ducting is not available, and the answer becomes a per-floor one: the Vaayu on the main connected volume plus a Megh 6L at Rs 3,499 or a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 on the levels it cannot reach.

How many floors can one scent machine cover? Two comfortably, three unreliably, four not at all. The mechanism is convection through an open stair void, and it dilutes with every level because the air travels further and mixes more on the way. On paper a three-storey connected volume - a 1,200 sq ft ground run at about 340 cubic metres, a stair void rising 30 ft at about 85, and two landings at about 57 each - is roughly 539 cubic metres, well inside the Vaayu's approximately 1000. But a coverage rating describes the volume a machine can hold, not the distance it can reach against dilution, and the second landing will read noticeably fainter than the first. Judge your own house by walking in fresh from outside and going straight to the top floor.

Is a ducted system worth it in a three-storey house? Frequently, and the arithmetic gets there faster than people expect. Two Vaayus is Rs 23,998, and two units plus six bedroom reeds at Rs 749 comes to Rs 28,492 - which is Rs 2,493 more than the ducted Aangan at Rs 25,999, and the Aangan reaches rooms behind closed doors on every floor the ductwork serves, which no number of standalone machines can do. Three Vaayus is Rs 35,997, which is Rs 9,998 more than the Aangan. The single condition is genuine ducted central air-conditioning; a multi-storey house on split units has no shared airflow to nebulise into and should stay with one machine on the main volume plus a small answer per floor.
The short answer
Short answer: Stairwell distribution works for two floors and thins out at three. On paper a three-storey connected volume is about 539 cubic metres - a 1,200 sq ft ground run at about 340, a stair void rising 30 ft at about 85, two landings at about 57 each - which is inside the SOSA Vaayu's approximately 1000 cubic metres at Rs 11,999, but dilution over two climbs makes the top landing noticeably fainter. Three answers past the second floor: a per-floor unit (Megh Rs 3,499 or Sukoon Rs 1,899 on the level the stair cannot reach, so Rs 15,498 with the Vaayu), a second Vaayu for a genuine second volume (Rs 23,998), or the ducted Aangan Rs 25,999 into central air-conditioning for approximately 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft including shut rooms. Meenar Rs 38,500 for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, four hotel-inspired blends included in the box) for the connected living volume of a villa; reeds from ₹749 for a single bedroom or bathroom; a single room done properly from ₹899; the Aangan (₹25,999) ducted into central air-conditioning for genuine whole-home coverage.

Whole-home scenting for a villa - at a glanceStep 1 - your home is judged in one breath, at the front doorStep 2 - one signature, not five competing smells in five roomsStep 3 - size it to the house: Vaayu ₹11,999, four blends includedOne room - reeds ₹749 · central air-conditioning - Aangan ₹25,999On a schedule · free sizing on WhatsApp
A villa is not one room, it is a set of connected volumes and a set of closed doors, and the two need different answers. Whole-home scenting means one fragrance held evenly across the part of the house you actually live in - the entrance, the living room, the dining - running on a schedule so it is already there when someone walks through your front door, and already there when you come home yourself. The bedrooms, the guest bathroom and the study get their own quiet solutions. Nobody in the house has to remember anything.
Straight answer
How many floors can one machine really do, and what takes over after that?
Two floors well, three unreliably, and here is what replaces it. 1. Why it thins. The mechanism is convection through an open stair void: warm air rises, the register goes with it. Every extra level adds path length and mixing, so what reaches a second landing is fainter again, and by a third climb the honest expectation is very little. 2. The paper number is misleading. A three-storey connected volume - ground run 1,200 sq ft at about 340m³, a stair void with a 100 sq ft footprint rising 30 ft at about 85m³, two landings at about 57m³ each - is roughly 539m³, comfortably inside the Vaayu's approximately 1000m³ at ₹11,999. But a rating describes the volume a machine can hold, not the distance it can reach against dilution. Say that plainly and you will buy correctly. 3. Answer one - per floor. Keep the Vaayu on the main connected volume and give the level it cannot reach its own small unit: a Megh 6L ₹3,499 with the water-based Hotel Collection ₹299 for a top-floor lounge, or a Sukoon ₹1,899 for one room. Vaayu plus a Megh is ₹15,498. 4. Answer two - a second Vaayu. Only where the upper level has a genuine connected volume of its own, a landing and passage and sitting area together. Two units is ₹23,998; with six bedroom reeds at ₹749 (₹4,494) the house is ₹28,492. 5. Answer three - ducted. The Aangan ₹25,999 nebulises into central air-conditioning and carries one signature to approximately 8,000-10,000 sq ft across every floor the ducts serve, doors included - ₹2,493 less than two units plus six reeds. Meenar ₹38,500 does approximately 12,000-18,000 sq ft. On split units this route does not exist. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your floors and air-conditioning type. One line: one Vaayu ₹11,999 handles two floors through the stair void, a third floor takes a ₹3,499 Megh of its own (₹15,498 together), and a house that wants every floor and every door goes ducted at ₹25,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The whole-home answer most villa owners land on: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, and four hotel-inspired blends included in the box - at ₹11,999. One bedroom or a guest bathroom starts on reeds from ₹749; a single room done properly from ₹899; central air-conditioning from ₹25,999. Where the stairwell argument runs out

Why the third climb fails, the three answers that replace it, and the numbers side by side.

Why this works at home
Past two floors, honestly
1Three floors of connected air is about 539 cubic metres on paper2The stair thins with every level: the second landing gets noticeably less3Ground Vaayu Rs 11,999 plus a Megh Rs 3,499 upstairs is Rs 15,4984Two units plus six reeds is Rs 28,492; the ducted Aangan is Rs 25,999
The whole-home answer: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³, and it arrives with four hotel-inspired blends in the box. A single bedroom or guest bathroom starts on reeds from ₹749.
1
The limit
Coverage is a volume, not a distance - and the third climb exposes the difference
A coverage rating tells you how much air a machine can hold at an even level. It does not tell you how far its output can travel against dilution, and in a tall house those two things come apart. Do the arithmetic first, because the number looks reassuring: a ground-floor connected run of 1,200 sq ft at a 10 ft ceiling is 12,000 cubic feet, about 340m³; a stair void with a 100 sq ft footprint rising through three storeys, say 30 ft, is 3,000 cubic feet, about 85m³; two landings of 200 sq ft each at 10 ft add 2,000 cubic feet apiece, about 57m³ each. Total roughly 539m³, barely half of the Vaayu's approximately 1000m³. And yet the top landing of that house will read noticeably fainter than the first, because the register has climbed twice, mixed with two floors of air and lost concentration on the way. This is why we will not tell you that one machine does a four-storey house. Test your own rather than trusting either of us: come in from outside after several hours away, when your nose is genuinely fresh, and walk straight to the top floor. That first breath is the only honest measurement available.
Tip: a rating is a volume the machine can hold, not a distance it can throw. Three floors is where the difference between those two shows up.
2
The answers
Per floor, a second volume, or ducted - and how to tell which is yours
Three routes exist above the second floor and they are chosen by layout and air-conditioning rather than by budget. Per floor. Keep the Vaayu ₹11,999 on the main connected volume where arrivals happen, and give the level it cannot reach a small unit of its own: a Megh 6L ₹3,499 with the water-based Hotel Collection ₹299 will hold a top-floor lounge or family room through a whole evening on one fill, and a Sukoon ₹1,899 or Boond ₹899 covers a single room. This is the right answer for most Indian multi-storey homes, because most of them run on split air-conditioners. A second machine. Justified only where the upper level has a genuine connected volume of its own - a landing, a passage and a sitting area that share air with each other but not with the ground floor. Two units is ₹23,998, and it is a real answer when that space is genuinely lived in rather than passed through. Ducted. If the house has true central air-conditioning, the Aangan ₹25,999 nebulises into the ductwork, so one signature is distributed wherever the system delivers air - every floor, and every room whose door is shut. That is a different kind of thing rather than a bigger one, and no number of standalone machines matches it.
3
The arithmetic
Set the four totals side by side and the choice stops being a debate
Write them out, because in a tall house the numbers are unusually close together and most people never compare them properly. One Vaayu plus a per-floor unit: ₹11,999 + a Megh ₹3,499 = ₹15,498, and if the bedrooms are covered with six reeds at ₹749 (₹4,494) the whole house is ₹19,992. Two Vaayus: ₹23,998, and with the same six reeds, ₹28,492. The ducted Aangan: ₹25,999, covering approximately 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft across every floor the ducts serve, bedrooms included, which means the reed layer largely stops being necessary. So the ducted route is ₹2,493 less than two machines plus a reed layer, and it does something two machines structurally cannot. Three Vaayus: ₹35,997, which is ₹9,998 more than the Aangan and still stopped by every closed door - there is no version of a tall house where three standalone machines is the right purchase. For a genuinely large property, Meenar at ₹38,500 covers approximately 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft. The one condition on the ducted routes is real central air-conditioning; on split units there is no shared airflow to nebulise into, and the per-floor answer is the correct one.
Tip: two machines plus reeds is ₹28,492 and the ducted system is ₹25,999. In a tall house that comparison ends the argument.
The SOSA principle
Convection is generous for one climb and unreliable for two. Past the second floor, stop counting machines - the question becomes per-floor or ducted, and the prices are closer than you think.
One Vaayu and a Megh is Rs 15,498. Two machines and a reed layer is Rs 28,492. The ducted Aangan is Rs 25,999 and reaches every door.

The SOSA home edit

Whatever the house looks like, the logic is the same: one scent, sized to the volume that is genuinely connected, running on a schedule so nobody in the family has to remember it. A single bedroom or a guest bathroom is happy on reeds with no power at all; the living room you actually live in wants a machine; the whole villa with central air-conditioning wants the ducts doing the work. Every SOSA system is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one belongs.

Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. A home is not a lobby you pass through. Households include children, elderly parents, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than any visitor does, which is why gentle dosing is the default at home and why the settings we suggest are lower than the machine can run. Anyone in the house reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with - turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Vaayu runs waterless nebulising oil and comes with the four hotel-inspired blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.

A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have sized this for houses across India, and I would rather tell you honestly that your layout needs two answers than sell you one machine that disappoints you. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your home's approximate size, the number of floors and a line about the layout - open plan, closed rooms, central air-conditioning or split units - and we will give you a free sizing recommendation. Frequently asked questions

We have a basement, ground, first and terrace level. Where do we start?
Start where the people are, then work outward. The main connected volume - usually the ground floor entrance, living and dining plus the stair void and first landing - is where arrivals happen and where the house is judged, so that takes the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 placed low near the stair base. The basement is almost always a separate volume behind a door and often has a damp question as well, which is ventilation and dehumidification first, always; once it is genuinely neutral, a Megh 6L at Rs 3,499 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 handles a home theatre or lounge on the evenings you use it. A terrace room is its own small problem: a reed at Rs 749 if you simply want it pleasant, or a Boond at Rs 899 if you want control. Do not buy a machine for a stairwell or a corridor.
Does a lift shaft or a light well help the way a staircase does?
A light well or an open atrium behaves very much like a stair void and often better, because it is a taller and cleaner vertical path - if the levels genuinely open onto it rather than being screened behind walls and doors, it will carry the register upward the same way. A lift shaft does not help at all: it is a sealed enclosure with doors at every level, so nothing you release into the house travels through it. What matters in both cases is the same test as everywhere else in this section. Stand at the bottom and ask whether you could walk up through that space without opening anything, and whether the rooms at the top are open to it. If the answer is yes, it is part of your connected volume and should be counted at its real height. If the answer is no, it is architecture rather than a distribution route.
Is it cheaper to run one machine harder than to add a small unit upstairs?
It is cheaper and it is the wrong thing to do, which is why we recommend against it. Raising the intensity downstairs to force something onto a third floor overdoses the rooms where people actually sit for hours, and a household includes children, elderly parents, sometimes someone pregnant, and pets - all of whom breathe that air rather than passing through it. The correct target is a level where a guest reads the house as welcoming without being able to name a note, and that target does not change because the house is tall. If a level genuinely gets nothing, give it its own small answer: a reed at Rs 749, a Boond at Rs 899 or a Megh at Rs 3,499 costs far less than the comfort you would be spending. Anyone in the house reporting a headache is a recalibration signal rather than something to work around.
What exactly does the house need for the ducted Aangan to be possible?
Genuine central or ducted air-conditioning, with ductwork carrying conditioned air to the rooms. The Aangan at Rs 25,999 nebulises into that airflow, so the signature is distributed by the system the house already runs, which is why it reaches every floor and rooms behind closed doors while standalone machines cannot. If your home has split units in each room, which is the far more common arrangement in Indian houses, there is no shared airflow to nebulise into and the ducted route is simply not available - that is not small print we would rather you discovered after ordering. The Meenar at Rs 38,500 is the larger system for approximately 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft. If you are unsure what your house has, describe the air-conditioning on WhatsApp and we will tell you plainly which route is open to you.
If we go ducted, do we still need reeds in the bedrooms?
Generally no, and that is the point of the route: the signature arrives wherever the ducts deliver air, so a bedroom with its door shut is being served in a way no standalone machine can manage. Two caveats worth knowing. Rooms that are not on the ductwork - a store, a servant room on a split unit, an outbuilding, sometimes a basement - remain outside the system and take their own answer at Rs 749 if you want them covered. And a bedroom whose occupant would rather have their own register, or nothing at all, is a preference to respect rather than a coverage gap to close, which matters more in a house with several generations in it. Otherwise the Aangan replaces the second layer rather than sitting alongside it, and that is a large part of why the comparison against two or three standalone machines is not close.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA home range; the sizing logic applies to any brand's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine covering approximately 1000m³, with Bluetooth app and timer scheduling. It ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box, chosen as one of three bundles at purchase: Bundle A - Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired, St. Regis Inspired, 1 Hotels Inspired; Bundle B - Westin Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired, Four Seasons Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired; Bundle C - St. Regis Inspired, W Hotels Inspired, 1 Hotels Inspired, Four Seasons Inspired. Format distinction: the Vaayu and the HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil, while the separate SOSA Hotel Collection fragrance (15ml ₹299) is water-based and runs in the ultrasonic machines only - Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh (₹3,499). The two fragrance formats are not interchangeable, and the Hotel Collection bottle does not go into a Vaayu. SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 sq ft and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively, ducted into central air-conditioning. Reed diffusers need no power and make no noise: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml from ₹1,249; duo sets ₹1,498, ₹1,548 and ₹1,598. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than a partitioned floor plan. Ventilation, cleaning and air-conditioning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept home and never a substitute for any of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Ongoing fragrance supply is arranged with SOSA on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
