A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. A full room does absorb and disperse scent differently - more bodies, more warmth, doors opening as people arrive in ones and twos, food in the air - and the instinct is to compensate by raising the intensity as the evening begins. That produces air that is actively scenting rather than settled, which is uneven and reads as effort, and by the time everyone has arrived the room is louder than anybody wanted. Instead, let the machine hold the whole connected volume for an hour or two before the first car pulls in, so the air that replaces what escapes through the front door is already scented too. A schedule does this without anybody remembering. And on nights when there is serious cooking, let the food be the hero at the table and keep the register where it is.
