Founder Diaries · Just-Because & Surprise Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
If she has only ever been given sprays, the interesting thing about an attar is not the scent - it is the format. Alcohol-free concentrated oil, in a 3ml bottle from ₹379, rolled onto the wrists and the base of the neck rather than sprayed at arm's length. It behaves differently, it is applied differently, and it suits some people and genuinely does not suit others. This page covers both.
SOSA Mastani attar, night jasmine and damask rose, from Rs 389
SOSA Mastani · night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh from ₹389 →
The evening character of the four, and the one that shows what the format does. Mastani, 3ml, ₹389 - night-blooming jasmine and damask rose with oudh, as alcohol-free oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. It stays close to the skin by design, which is the whole appeal and also the reason it is wrong for somebody who wants reach.
Quick answers — read this first
What is an attar? Alcohol-free concentrated perfume oil, applied with a roll-on at the pulse points rather than sprayed. SOSA attars come in 3ml from ₹379, 6ml from ₹669 and 12ml from ₹1,149. Because there is no alcohol carrying it, an attar sits closer to the skin than a spray does.

Which SOSA attar is best for a girlfriend? It depends on what she already wears. Adaa ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac for daytime; Ameeri ₹385 is Taif rose, Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron; Mastani ₹389 is night jasmine and damask rose with oudh; Nawaab ₹399 is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron.

Is an attar a good gift for somebody used to perfume sprays? It is a good gift for somebody curious about a different format, and the wrong one for somebody who likes a fragrance that carries across a room. An attar is close and quiet by design. If she chooses a spray for its projection, an attar is a step in the opposite direction.
The short answer
Short answer: A SOSA attar is alcohol-free concentrated oil, rolled on the pulse points, from Rs 379 for 3ml. Adaa is the daytime one, Ameeri is rose and saffron, Mastani is night jasmine and rose, Nawaab is white oud. It is the wrong gift for somebody who wants projection.
The pick: A single 3ml attar from ₹379, chosen by character - or the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 if you would rather she picked.
Why: The format is the point: alcohol-free oil rolled on at the wrist is a different thing from a spray, and 3ml is small enough to try without committing to anything.
Choosing a gift when there is no occasion - at a glanceSmall enough not to need explaining - attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, duo set ₹1,498Posted to another city - flat, light, nothing to assembleNever - anything that needs a reason to justify it
A gift with no occasion attached has one job an occasion gift does not: it has to make sense on its own. That usually means small enough not to need explaining and useful enough not to sit there - which is why a ₹379 attar often lands better than something three times the price handed over with an apology for the timing.
Straight answer
Is an attar a good just-because gift for a girlfriend, and which one?
Yes, if she is the sort of person who finds a different format interesting rather than inconvenient. An attar is alcohol-free concentrated perfume oil applied with a roll-on at the pulse points - the wrists, the base of the neck, behind the ears - rather than sprayed. Because nothing volatile is carrying it, it opens softly and sits close to the skin instead of filling the space around her. SOSA makes four: Adaa at ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac with white musk, the daytime one; Ameeri at ₹385 is Taif rose, Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron with soft oudh; Mastani at ₹389 is night-blooming jasmine and damask rose with oudh; Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. All four come in 3ml, 6ml and ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 for 12ml, and the Attar Trio puts Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box from ₹1,055. The honest caution: an attar is quieter than a spray, so it is the wrong gift for somebody who likes a fragrance that announces her. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
An attar is not a small perfume. It is a different format - oil instead of alcohol, rolled on instead of sprayed, close instead of carrying - and that difference is most of what makes it interesting to give.
Four characters, all alcohol-free, all from ₹379 for 3ml: Adaa for daytime, Ameeri for rose and saffron, Mastani for night jasmine, Nawaab for white oud.
SOSA attars from ₹379

What an attar actually is, and why the format is the gift

Three things decide whether an attar is the right gift for a particular person, and none of them is the scent. They are the format itself, the way it is worn, and the volume it works at - which is the one that decides who should not be given one.

1
The first variable
Oil rather than alcohol, and what that changes
A conventional perfume is fragrance dissolved in alcohol, which evaporates and carries the scent outwards - that is what gives a spray its sharp opening and its reach. An attar has no alcohol in it at all. It is concentrated oil, so it opens softly, without the bright first few minutes, and stays where it was put.

For a gift, the useful consequence is that it is a genuinely new experience for somebody whose shelf is all sprays. It is also a smaller commitment: 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 is enough to find out whether she likes wearing an oil at all, which is exactly the right size of question to ask on an ordinary day.
Tip: Say the word alcohol-free when you hand it over. It explains most of the difference.
2
The second variable
How it is worn, which is part of the gift
The roll-on goes on the pulse points - inside the wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears - and that is the whole method. It is applied deliberately rather than sprayed at a distance, which some people find a pleasure and some people find fussy, and it is worth knowing which she is.

Practically, it also travels well. A 3ml roll-on has nothing to leak and nothing to spray in a shared space, so it lives in a handbag, a desk drawer or an overnight bag. If she is somebody who reapplies during the day, that is a real advantage over a bottle that stays at home.
3
The third variable
Volume, and who an attar is wrong for
This is the deciding one. An attar is quiet. It is noticed close up and it does not fill a room, which is a feature if she likes a fragrance that stays personal and a disappointment if she likes one that arrives before she does. Some people choose a perfume precisely for its projection, and for those people an attar is a step in the wrong direction regardless of how good the composition is.

So the test is not whether she likes rose or oud. It is whether the fragrances she already wears are close ones or carrying ones. If everything on her shelf is a big spray she puts on from arm's length, buy her something for her room instead, or a 10ml perfume at ₹599 in the family she already wears.
Tip: If she wears fragrance to be noticed across a room, an attar is the wrong gift.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
Choosing between the four in about two minutes
  1. Check she likes fragrance that stays close rather than one that carries.
  2. Pick daytime or evening: Adaa for day, Mastani for evening.
  3. Pick the family: rose and saffron is Ameeri, white oud is Nawaab.
  4. Buy the 3ml at Rs 379 to Rs 399. Keep 6ml and 12ml for a repeat.
The SOSA principle
The format is the gift here. Giving somebody a fragrance oil when every bottle she owns is a spray is a different kind of present from giving her another spray, and it costs ₹379 to find out.
It is also the reason the caution matters: the same difference that makes it interesting makes it wrong for somebody who wants reach.

The four SOSA attars, and who each one suits

The four divide cleanly and it is worth matching character rather than guessing. Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac over white musk - bright, green and the easiest of the four to wear through a working day. Ameeri at ₹385 is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh - the warm, festive one, and the natural choice if what she wears is already rose-led. Mastani at ₹389 is night-blooming jasmine and damask rose with oudh, which makes it the evening one of the set. Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, described on its own page as the Liquid Gold Attar, and it is the most formal and the most decisive - a strong opinion rather than a safe pick. All four are ₹669 to ₹699 in 6ml and ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 in 12ml.

The SOSA gift edit
Which of the four suits which kind of wearer
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Adaa · ₹379 for 3ml Bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac with white musk. For somebody whose everyday fragrances are light, green or citrus-led, and the least risky of the four to give a person whose taste you only half know. It is the wrong one for somebody who reaches for deep, resinous scents.
Ameeri · ₹385 for 3ml Taif rose with Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. For a rose wearer, and the warmest of the four without being heavy. It is the wrong one if the rose fragrances she owns are the fresh, dewy kind rather than the spiced kind.
Mastani · ₹389 for 3ml Night-blooming jasmine and damask rose with oudh. The evening character of the set, for somebody who wears jasmine or white florals and likes them after dark. It is the wrong one as an all-day office fragrance for somebody who prefers to stay light.
Nawaab · ₹399 for 3ml White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron - the Liquid Gold Attar on its own page, and the most formal of the four. For somebody who already wears oud deliberately. It is the wrong one as a first attar for a person who has never worn oud at all.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

On sizes: buy the 3ml. At ₹379 to ₹399 it is the smallest serious fragrance gift there is, and if the format turns out not to suit her, nothing has been wasted and nothing large is sitting on her shelf. The 6ml at ₹669 to ₹699 and the 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 are for repeating something she has already finished. If you would rather not choose the character at all, the Attar Trio from ₹1,055 puts Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box and hands the decision to her - though three bottles is visibly a set, so it reads as more of an occasion than a single ₹379 bottle does. Adaa is not in the Trio, so if the light daytime one is the right answer, buy it on its own.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

Most people meet fragrance as something you spray. Handing somebody a 3ml roll-on and telling her it goes on the wrists is a small change of habit, and that is a more interesting thing to give than another bottle of the same idea.

The SOSA gifting range

Three questions settle almost every one of these. Will it be worn, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to be able to name something they already wear? Will it sit in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser asks nothing of you except an address? Or does it go in a car, where the real choice is between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray at the same price? Answer that, then pick the band - and with no occasion attached, the band should usually be lower than you first reach for.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379

SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The orders I like most are the ones with no date attached. Somebody buys one attar on a Wednesday afternoon and asks us to send it to a flat in another city, and there is no birthday in the note and no anniversary and no festival. Those are, in my experience, the gifts that actually get used, and I think the reason is unglamorous: nobody has to live up to them. An anniversary gift carries an expectation. A Wednesday gift carries none, so it gets opened, put on a shelf and used the next morning.

The practical advice I give people is the opposite of what they expect. Go smaller than you think. A large unexplained present asks a question - what is this for, what do I owe you - and the person receiving it spends energy answering it. A ₹379 attar, a ₹449 car scent, a ₹749 reed diffuser: these are small enough to be accepted without any of that. If you want to spend more, spend it on accuracy instead of size - the right scent for somebody's actual flat beats a bigger bottle of the wrong one every time.

One honest thing about the harder version of this. People write to us when somebody they love is having a terrible week, and they want to send something that helps. I will not tell you that a fragrance does that, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say to somebody and it is worth saying. It is not treatment, it is not a substitute for turning up, and anybody who sells it to you as either is selling you something else.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an attar and a perfume?
An attar is concentrated oil with no alcohol in it, applied with a roll-on at the pulse points. A perfume is fragrance carried in alcohol and sprayed. The attar opens more softly and stays closer to the skin; the spray has a sharper opening and carries further.
How much does a SOSA attar cost?
Rs 379 for Adaa, Rs 385 for Ameeri, Rs 389 for Mastani and Rs 399 for Nawaab in 3ml. The 6ml sizes are Rs 669 to Rs 699 and the 12ml sizes are Rs 1,149 to Rs 1,199. The Attar Trio of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani starts at Rs 1,055.
How do you apply an attar?
Roll a small amount onto the pulse points - the inside of the wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears. It is applied deliberately rather than sprayed from a distance, and it can be reapplied through the day because there is nothing to spray in a shared space.
Who should not be given an attar?
Somebody who likes a fragrance that carries across a room. An attar is close and quiet by design, so if the bottles she already owns are big sprays chosen for their reach, a 10ml perfume at Rs 599 in the family she wears is the better gift.
Which attar should I buy if I have no idea what she likes?
Adaa at Rs 379 is the lightest and the least decisive of the four, so it is the safest single guess. If you would rather not guess at all, the Attar Trio at Rs 1,055 gives her three characters to choose from, though it reads as a larger gift than one bottle does.
