Founder Diaries · Reed Diffusers & Room Scenting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
There is a picture that makes this whole section obvious in about ten seconds, and once you have seen it you will never wonder about a second bottle again. It is the shape that fragrance takes in a room around a passive source, and what happens to that shape when you add a second one. No physics degree needed, and nothing here is a criticism of the bottle you own.
Quick answers — read this first
Why do two reed diffusers create two hot spots instead of an evenly scented room? Because each one is an independent source and scent concentration is set by distance from a source. Oil climbs the reeds by capillary action and evaporates into the air touching them; nothing pushes it outward, so the air is richest at the bottle and gets steadily thinner as you move away. That is one hill of concentration with its summit at the bottle. Add a second bottle and you have built a second hill somewhere else. Two hills do not make a plateau. They make two summits with a valley between them, and the valley sits in the middle of the room where the thin outer edge of one bottle meets the thin outer edge of the other. Adding faint to faint gives you faint.

Where is the weakest point in a room with two reed diffusers? Between them, which is usually exactly where you sit or lie. Each bottle's concentration is at its lowest at the far end of its own falloff, and the space between two bottles is the far end of both. So the middle of the room receives the tail of one plus the tail of the other, and two small contributions still add to a small one. Meanwhile the two positions that were already the strongest, right beside each bottle, get a little stronger. It is a very common experience to walk through such a room and feel the scent switch on, off and on again. That is the two-hill shape being crossed, not a fault in your fragrance.

What changes the shape rather than adding another peak? Active diffusion. An ultrasonic breaks a water-and-fragrance mixture into a fine cool mist and pushes it into the room, so the room is being supplied outward from the machine rather than leaked into around a bottle. A waterless cold-air diffuser does the same with pure oil. Either way there is now energy moving scent away from the source, which is the only thing that flattens the hill into something closer to a plateau. For one ordinary bedroom that is a Boond at Rs 899 or a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299. The trade-off is that water adds humidity, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust.
The short answer
Short answer: Because concentration is set by distance from a source, and each bottle is its own source. One reed makes a hill of scent with its summit at the bottle, thinning outward. A second reed makes a second hill somewhere else. Two hills give two summits and a valley between them, and that valley sits in the middle of the room, where the faint edge of one bottle meets the faint edge of the other. Only active diffusion flattens the shape: an ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299, or the waterless SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 for strong scent where you sit. The pick: keep the reed from ₹749 for ambience near where it stands; an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 when you want the whole room evenly; the SOSA Safar (₹3,999, waterless and cordless, three hotel-inspired blends included) when you want it strong and true in the space you sit in; the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large or open-plan room.

Why it smells near the bottle - at a glanceStep 1 - a reed diffuser is passive: oil evaporates, nothing pushes itStep 2 - so it is strongest at the bottle and fades with distanceStep 3 - whole room evenly? An active diffuser from ₹899Step 4 - strong where you sit or sleep? Safar ₹3,999Keep the reed too · from ₹749, no power needed
Nothing has gone wrong with your reed diffuser. A reed is a passive system: the oil climbs the sticks and evaporates at whatever rate your room's warmth and air movement allow, and no part of it pushes scent anywhere. That is exactly why it is lovely at arm's length and quiet across the room. What has changed is what you now want from it. Ambience near where the bottle stands is one job; a whole room that smells of it, or a strong true scent right where you sit, is a different job, and a different job needs a different tool. This guide explains the mechanism first, then tells you honestly which tool matches which wish.
Straight answer
What actually happens in the air when you put two reed diffusers in one room?
You build two hills of fragrance instead of one, and you sit in the valley between them. Draw the first hill. Oil climbs the reeds and evaporates into the air in contact with them. Nothing pushes it, so it is dense right at the bottle, lighter a step away, faint two or three steps away and eventually indistinguishable from the room's own smell. That is a steep hill with its summit at the glass. Now add the second. Put another bottle across the room and you draw the identical hill around it. What you have is not a filled room; it is summit, slope, valley, slope, summit. The valley is the problem. The middle of the room is the far end of bottle one's falloff and the far end of bottle two's falloff at the same time, so it receives the weakest part of both. Faint plus faint is faint. And the middle of the room is very often where the bed, the sofa or the desk chair actually is - which is why two bottles can leave you smelling less than you hoped from the one place you spend all your time. What changes the shape. Not another peak, but energy. An ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 actively sends scent outward, which flattens the hill towards a plateau, at the cost of added humidity, some dilution and possible white dust in hard-water areas. For strong, undiluted fragrance right at the summit you occupy, the waterless SOSA Safar is ₹3,999. Tell us where you sit on WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 and we will place the right thing there. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The shape of the scent in your room, drawn honestly

One source, then two, then the reason the room's middle is the part that suffers most.

Why this happens in your room
The two-hill shape, and where you are standing in it
1Scent is strongest at the bottle and falls away with distance from it2Two bottles means two of those falls, meeting at their weakest point3The dip usually sits exactly where the bed or the sofa is4Only an active diffuser changes the shape, not just the number of peaks
Keep the reed where it already works, from ₹749. If you want the whole room, an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection is the honest and cheaper first upgrade. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is waterless and cordless.
1
Step one
What one reed diffuser looks like as a shape
Forget bottles for a moment and think about concentration. Around a reed diffuser, the number of fragrance molecules in a given lungful of air is highest in the air immediately touching the reeds, because that is where evaporation is happening. From there, molecules spread outward only by ordinary diffusion and by whatever gentle currents your room already has. Nothing in the product accelerates that. So if you could see concentration as height, you would see a steep little hill with its summit at the glass and slopes falling away in every direction, reaching background level quite quickly. That shape is not a defect and it is not particular to any fragrance or brand. It is what happens whenever a substance evaporates into still air with nothing carrying it. It is also exactly why the bottle smells glorious when you lean over it and why the same bottle is silent from the doorway. You are not standing on the hill; you are standing on the plain beside it.
Tip: lean over the bottle, then step back three paces and breathe. You have just walked down the hill.
2
Step two
Two hills do not make a plateau
Now put a second, identical bottle somewhere else in the room and draw the same shape around it. The instinct is that the two slopes will meet in the middle and lift it, and they do meet - but they meet at their lowest points. Bottle one's contribution in the centre of the room is the very tail of its falloff, and bottle two's contribution there is the very tail of its falloff, and adding one small quantity to another small quantity does not produce a large one. Meanwhile the summits, which are the two places that were already excellent, each gain a little from the other's tail and become marginally better still. So the profile across the room goes high, down, low, up, high. That is two hot spots with a dip between them, and it is the exact opposite of even coverage, which would be a flat line at a comfortable level from wall to wall. You have not bought a better distribution. You have bought a second copy of the same distribution and placed it elsewhere.
3
Step three
The dip is usually where you live
Here is the part that makes the two-bottle plan quietly frustrating. People place bottles where there is furniture to put them on: a dressing table, a console, a shelf, a windowsill. Those are almost always at the edges of a room. The place you actually occupy - the bed, the sofa, the desk chair - tends to be inboard of all of them. So the two summits end up around the perimeter and the valley lands squarely on the spot where you spend your evenings. That is why the two-diffuser room so often feels like the scent is somewhere else no matter where you go, and why crossing the room can feel like the fragrance switching on, off and on again. The fix is not a third bottle at ₹2,247 for the set. It is a device that pushes scent outward into the middle instead of leaking it around the edges: an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299, at ₹1,198 all in, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 plus ₹299 for ₹2,198. Both cost less than the reeds they replace and neither of them waits for the air to come and find them.
Tip: mark where you actually sit, then ask which hill you are on. Usually the answer is neither.
The SOSA principle
Adding a source adds a summit. It never fills the valley, because the valley is made of everything both bottles cannot reach.
High, down, low, up, high. That is a two-reed room measured across its floor, and it is why the middle stays quiet.

The ladder from passive to active, in order - tap any image to see it on the store
Start where you already are. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are passive: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 and Fresh Brew ₹849, with 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. They give you ambience near where the bottle stands, with no power, no noise and nothing that can fail, and they are still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. If you want the room itself to smell of it, that needs an active diffuser: Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Megh ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, or the Pack of 7 at 15ml for ₹1,799). That is the honest first upgrade for a single ordinary bedroom, and it costs less than the Safar. Its trade-off, in our own words: an ultrasonic mixes the fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. If you would rather have no water at all and want the scent strong and true in the space you actually occupy, the SOSA Safar ₹3,999 is waterless, cordless and rechargeable, diffusing pure undiluted oil by cold diffusion. For a large room or a connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 is the genuine whole-space answer at approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, and it is honestly more machine than a small bedroom needs.

The SOSA edit, passive to active

Whatever your room looks like, the logic is the same, and it has nothing to do with how big or smart your home is. A passive reed gives you scent near where it stands, and that is genuinely the right answer for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. An active diffuser moves scent into the air instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it, which is the only thing that turns "lovely next to the bottle" into "the room smells of it". Every SOSA product is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one honestly belongs.

Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with: turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ship with their own blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only, and the two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. A note from Sonal

There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.

So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have had this conversation hundreds of times, and I would much rather talk someone out of a purchase than sell them a disappointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and a line about where you actually sit or sleep in it - the bed, the desk, the sofa, the corner you read in - and we will tell you which of these you need, including when the answer is none of them. I read those messages myself. Everything is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your room gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should I put two reed diffusers to avoid the dip in the middle?
There is no spacing that removes it, which is the honest answer even though it is not the one you were hoping for. Move the bottles closer and the two hills merge into one taller hill, so you get a single stronger area and a larger unscented remainder. Move them further apart and the valley between them gets wider and deeper. Put one in each of two corners and you have two corners. The dip exists because both bottles are weakest at their own extremities, and every arrangement has extremities. What spacing genuinely lets you choose is which parts of the room are good, so if there are exactly two places you use, spacing them to sit beside those two places is sensible. It just is not coverage, and it is worth naming that before you spend Rs 749 again.
Does the dip mean the fragrance is bad quality?
Not remotely, and the proof is in your own hands. Lean over either bottle and the fragrance is exactly as good as the day you bought it, which tells you the oil, the reeds and the blend are all performing. The dip is a geometry problem, not a quality one. Anything that evaporates into still air without something carrying it will produce a concentration hill around itself, whether it is an inexpensive oil or the most beautiful composition ever made. A finer fragrance simply makes a lovelier hill. This is worth internalising because it protects you from the most common expensive mistake in home scenting, which is buying a stronger or costlier oil to fix a distance problem that no oil has ever been able to fix.
Would three or four reed diffusers eventually fill the gaps?
You would get more hills and smaller valleys, and you would pay a great deal for a still-uneven room. Three Morning Freshness reeds at Rs 749 each is Rs 2,247, and a Sukoon ultrasonic at Rs 1,899 with a water-based Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299 is Rs 2,198, which is Rs 49 less for an active machine that scents the middle rather than the perimeter. There is also a practical ceiling: a lot of small, strong sources close together tends to read as heavy near the furniture and still hollow in the centre, and heavier is not the same as more even. Gentle dosing is the sensible default in a home anyway, particularly with children, elderly relatives or pets around. If a room ever feels like too much, that is a signal to ease off rather than to add another bottle.
Why does the scent seem to appear and disappear as I walk around?
Two reasons, and both are normal. The first is the shape we have described: you are physically walking up one hill, down into the valley and up the other, and your nose is reporting that accurately. The second is that our sense of smell adapts. Sit still in scented air for a few minutes and your nose quietly stops reporting a constant background, which is why you often cannot smell your own home when you come back to it after ten minutes indoors. Movement resets that, so walking past a bottle gives you a fresh, vivid hit while sitting beside the same bottle fades within minutes. Between them, those two effects explain almost every on-and-off experience people describe with reed diffusers, and neither of them is a fault.
If I want the middle of the room scented, what do I actually buy?
Something that pushes. For one ordinary bedroom the honest first step is an ultrasonic, because it is active, it is designed for rooms, and it costs less than our waterless unit: a Boond at Rs 899 or a Sukoon at Rs 1,899, running the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299. State the trade-offs to yourself before you buy - it adds humidity to the room, water can dilute the scent, and hard water can leave a fine white dust. If you would rather have pure, undiluted, waterless fragrance concentrated where you actually sit or sleep, the cordless SOSA Safar is Rs 3,999 with three hotel-inspired blends included. And if the space is large or open-plan rather than a single bedroom, the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is the whole-space machine. Send us the dimensions on WhatsApp and we will pick honestly, including telling you to keep the reed.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the passive-versus-active reasoning applies to any brand's products.

Facts verified August 2026: A reed diffuser is a passive system - oil travels up the reeds by capillary action and evaporates at the rate the room's temperature and air movement allow, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls away with distance. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Reed prices: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. An active diffuser adds energy to move fragrance into the air. SOSA's ultrasonic machines are Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh 6L (₹3,499); they run the water-based SOSA Hotel Collection, 15ml ₹299, 100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799. An ultrasonic mixes fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser with a 2000 mAh battery, diffusing pure undiluted oil with no water and no white dust; SOSA's own copy lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, work-from-home and gifting. It ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles: Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired; St. Regis Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired and Four Seasons Inspired; or W Hotels Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired and Westin Inspired. No square-foot or cubic-metre coverage figure is published for the Safar, so none is stated here or anywhere else by us; it is a personal-space diffuser, not a whole-room machine. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air system covering approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box. Format distinction: the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each arrive with their own blends, while the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and goes into the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than closed doors. Ventilation and cleaning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept room and never a substitute for either, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Questions about a specific room are answered on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
