Why does my diffuser smell bad?
For one of two reasons, and the smell tells you which. A musty, damp or slightly sour smell is stagnant water - left sitting, water grows a slimy biofilm in the tank within a day or two, and the mist carries that smell into the room. A rancid, oily, off smell is raw essential or carrier oils that have oxidised and gone off on the plate and in the tank. Neither means the diffuser is ruined. Both come down to what is sitting in the tank and how often you clean it.
One line: musty means stagnant water, rancid means old oils - clean the tank either way.

The two smells and their causes
A diffuser should smell of nothing but your fragrance. When it smells bad, it is one of these two, and the character of the smell tells you which.
1. Stagnant water and biofilm - a musty, damp smell. Water left standing in a warm tank grows a thin, slimy biofilm within a day or two. That film smells musty or faintly sour, and the mist carries it out. This is the most common cause, and it is entirely about how long water sits.
2. Rancid raw oils - an oily, off smell. If you have been using raw essential or carrier oils, they oxidise over time. Left in the tank or filmed on the plate, they turn rancid and smell stale and oily. Water-based fragrance does not do this, which is one more reason to use it.

Myth: a bad-smelling diffuser is broken. It almost never is. It is a tank that needs emptying and a plate that needs a wipe. Ten minutes of cleaning brings it back.
The clean-tank routine
This is the whole routine. Follow it and your diffuser will only ever smell of the fragrance you chose.
Empty after each use. Do not leave water sitting overnight, especially in warm weather. Tip it out, and the biofilm never gets a chance to form.
Rinse the tank every couple of days. A quick rinse with clean water clears any film starting to build. Wipe the inside dry with a soft cloth.
Descale weekly with diluted white vinegar. One part vinegar to two parts water, left a few minutes, then a gentle wipe of the plate and a good rinse. This clears both scale and any oily residue.
Use filtered water and SOSA water-based fragrance only. Filtered or RO water leaves less scale, and water-based fragrance atomises cleanly and does not go rancid. Never hot water, never raw oils.
Why water-based fragrance stays fresh
SOSA water-based fragrance is formulated to disperse in water and ride the mist without leaving a heavy oily film. It does not sit and oxidise on the plate the way raw carrier oils do, so it does not develop that rancid, stale smell - as long as you still empty and rinse the tank.
A diffuser only smells bad when something has been left to sit in it. Empty it, rinse it, and it goes back to smelling of nothing but your scent.

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine.
