The bottle releases fragrance, it does not deliver it
It is worth separating two jobs that most of us assume are one job. Releasing fragrance means getting scent molecules out of the oil and into the air, and your reed diffuser does this beautifully - that is precisely what you are smelling when you lean in. Delivering fragrance means moving those molecules to a particular place, such as the chair on the other side of the room. A reed diffuser does the first job and has no mechanism at all for the second. The reeds are porous sticks; oil climbs them because the tiny channels inside pull liquid upward against gravity, exactly as a wick does. Once that oil reaches air, it evaporates. And that is the end of the machinery. Nothing after that point is powered, aimed or accelerated. Once a molecule leaves the reed it moves outward for one reason only: there are more of them near the sticks than there are further away, and molecules drift from crowded air into emptier air until the crowding evens out. That process is real and it does work, but it is unhurried. In perfectly still air, sealed off from everything, a room would eventually reach a fairly even concentration. Your room is not sealed and its air is not still. A ceiling fan stirs and thins the scented air before it can build. An air conditioner moves and dries it. A door that opens, a window on the latch, a balcony gap - each of them removes scented air and replaces it with unscented air, quietly and continuously. So the slow outward drift is competing against a much faster process that is undoing it. The result is a small pocket of properly scented air around the bottle that keeps being trimmed back at its edges, which is exactly the shape of what you are experiencing.

Picture the fragrance as a soft pool around the reeds rather than a beam pointed into the room. The pool has a dense middle and vague edges, and its size is set by how fast oil evaporates versus how fast the room takes air away. When you stand at the bottle you have walked into the middle of the pool. When you sit on the sofa you are at or beyond its edge, where the concentration has fallen below what your nose can register - it has not vanished, it has simply dropped under your detection threshold. Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Flipping the reeds refreshes the saturated surface and gives you a short, genuinely noticeable lift, so it is worth doing every week or so. What it does not do is change where the fragrance goes. A freshly flipped stick evaporates faster for a while, which raises the concentration in the air immediately around the bottle, and that stronger pool still has no way to travel. You will notice it more when you walk past and no more from the sofa. It also uses the oil quicker, so a diffuser flipped every day will run through its roughly six to ten weeks at the shorter end of that range. Flip for freshness, not for reach. If reach is the goal, that is a different tool rather than a different habit.
Is it because my bottle is small? Would a bigger one carry further?
A larger bottle holds more oil, which mostly means it lasts longer rather than that it projects further. What determines how much fragrance enters the air is the exposed reed surface and the room's temperature and air movement, not how much liquid is sitting underneath. A 130ml diffuser from Rs 1,249 gives you a bigger reservoir and a longer run, and near the bottle it can read a little richer because the reeds stay well fed, but the same passive limit applies to the far side of the room. If your reason for upgrading is longevity or the look of a larger bottle on a console, that is a good reason. If your reason is that you want to smell it from the bed, you would be buying more of the thing that is not the constraint.
Why can I smell it clearly on some days and barely at all on others?
Because the room, not the bottle, is setting the pace, and the room changes daily. Warmth raises evaporation, so a hot afternoon gives you more fragrance in the air than a cool morning does. Air movement takes it away, so a day with the fan on high or the balcony door open reads much quieter than a still, closed afternoon. Humidity changes how long scent lingers. There is also your own nose: spend twenty minutes in a room and you largely stop registering a steady background scent, which is why you notice it when you walk in and lose it while sitting. None of that variation means the diffuser is inconsistent. It means a passive system is at the mercy of conditions, which is precisely what an active diffuser removes.
Should I just buy a second reed diffuser and put it near me?
If there is a second place you genuinely spend time in - a reading chair as well as the bed, or a desk as well as the console - then yes, a second bottle for the second spot is a sensible Rs 749 to Rs 849 and we would not talk you out of it. What it will not do is join up with the first one to give you an evenly scented room. Two passive bottles produce two pools of scent, each dense at its own bottle and thin in between, because neither has gained any ability to carry fragrance outward. So the honest test is simple. If you are buying a second scented spot, buy it. Is there any placement that genuinely makes a reed diffuser reach further?
Placement cannot extend the reach, but it can put the reach where it matters, and that is worth doing tonight for free. Set the bottle at roughly seated or lying nose height rather than on the floor, because warm scented air rises and a low shelf sends much of it over your head before you meet it. Keep it out of the direct line of a fan or an AC vent, which strips scented air away as fast as the reeds produce it, and away from an open window, which removes it continuously. Then put it in the part of the room you honestly occupy rather than the part that looks best in photographs. Do all three and most people report a clear improvement. The far corner will still be quiet, because you have optimised a passive system rather than replaced it.
