Founder Diaries · Airbnb Scenting · Fragrance by Property Type
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Hosts almost always choose a fragrance the way they would choose one for their own bedroom — by smelling and liking. In a rental that is the wrong instrument. The building decides, and it decides on three things you cannot smell: how much connected volume there is, how high the ceilings are, and what is already in the air. A composition that is exactly right in a Jaipur haveli disappears in a Goa apartment and overwhelms a Bengaluru two-bedroom. This page maps property types to the three fragrance combos a SOSA Vaayu actually ships with, and says which listings should not be buying a machine at all.
Quick answers — read this first
There are three combos, not seven choices: the Vaayu ships with four fragrances at 100ml each in one of three fixed sets, chosen at checkout, all at the same ₹11,999.

Combo 1 · The Luxury Hotel Collection — Quiet Luxury, White Tea Serenity, Old-World Glamour, Forest Suite. The broadest span; the default when unsure.

Combo 2 · Fresh & Relaxing — White Tea Serenity, Tea Garden, Warm Welcome, Quiet Luxury. Lightest and greenest; coastal, humid and compact properties.

Combo 3 · Signature Luxury — Old-World Glamour, Lobby Bar, Forest Suite, Warm Welcome. Warmest and most characterful; high ceilings, villas, period buildings.
The short answer
Short answer: pick the combo by the property, not the person. Coastal, humid or compact listing — Combo 2. High-ceilinged, large or period property — Combo 3. Anything else, or genuine uncertainty — Combo 1, which spans the register from two transparent white teas to a rich amber and gives you room to find your signature before you fix it.
The mechanism: ceiling height decides how much of a transparent composition survives to nose level; humidity changes how a fragrance carries and makes heavy warm materials feel heavier still; and whatever the building already smells of — sea air, deodar, city dust, a kitchen — either agrees with a composition or argues with it. None of that is affected by which scent you personally prefer on a blotter.
Shop: the Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³ and includes 400ml of cold-air fragrance. If your listing is one room, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 with water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 is the honest answer instead. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Which SOSA Hotel Collection fragrance should I put in my listing?
1. Measure the ceiling before you smell anything. Coverage of up to 1000m³ is a volume figure, and volume is area multiplied by height. A nine-foot ceiling and a fourteen-foot ceiling are different scenting problems in the same floor plan, and the transparent white teas are the first thing to disappear in the taller one.

2. Coastal, humid or compact — Combo 2, Fresh & Relaxing. White Tea Serenity, Tea Garden, Warm Welcome and Quiet Luxury. No heavy amber in the set, which matters in a Goa or Kochi August when warm materials already feel warmer than they are.

3. High-ceilinged, large or period — Combo 3, Signature Luxury. Old-World Glamour, Lobby Bar, Forest Suite and Warm Welcome. These have the density to still be present at nose level in a room with volume above it.

4. Anything else, or genuinely unsure — Combo 1. Quiet Luxury, White Tea Serenity, Old-World Glamour and Forest Suite covers the register end to end, so you can find the one that suits the property and then hold it.

5. You cannot mix your own four. The three sets are fixed at checkout and the price is identical, so choose the set whose majority suits your property rather than hunting for one perfect bottle.

6. Under about 300 sq ft, or one closed room, do not buy this machine at all. A Sukoon at ₹1,899 with water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299, or a reed diffuser from ₹749, is the right answer and a fraction of the money.

SOSA is an independent Indian house and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand; these are original interpretations of a style. No separate Vaayu refill oil is sold at present. Nothing here claims an effect on ratings, reviews, bookings or occupancy. Reed compositions are handmade in Pune, the machines are made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: coastal, humid or compact — Combo 2. High ceilings, villa or period building — Combo 3. Everything else, or unsure — Combo 1. All three are ₹11,999 with four 100ml fragrances. One-room listings should buy a Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead, and there is no separate Vaayu refill oil on sale today.
SOSA Vaayu waterless cold-air scent diffuser with three fragrance combos
The choice you make at checkout
SOSA Vaayu · one of three fragrance combos ₹11,999
Waterless cold-air nebulisation — pressurised air atomises undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist, no water and no heat, so nothing is diluted and no humidity is added. Up to 1000m³ of coverage, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft depending on ceiling height. 400ml tank rated at 90+ days per fill, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h timers, adjustable intensity, auto-stop and key-lock, under 38 dB, 5W, 0.9 kg, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, CE / RoHS / SGS certified. Four fragrances at 100ml each in the box; the combo is chosen at checkout and the price is the same for all three. No separate Vaayu refill oil is sold at present.

Part one — the three things the building decides for you

Preference is not irrelevant, but it is the last variable rather than the first. Before it, three properties of the building itself determine whether a given composition will read as intended, and all three are measurable rather than matters of taste. Get these right and almost any of the seven fragrances will work; get them wrong and your favourite will be the one that disappoints you.

1
VARIABLE ONE · HEIGHT
Ceiling height decides which register survives
A thousand cubic metres is a volume, and the same 1,500 sq ft floor plan becomes a very different job at nine feet and at fourteen. The taller the room, the more of a light composition rises past nose level and stays there, which is why transparent white teas can feel absent in a haveli, a converted warehouse or a double-height living area while being exactly right in an ordinary apartment. The denser materials — amber, sandalwood, violet — hold their position lower down and read as present rather than distant. This single variable is why Combo 3 exists, and it is the one hosts most often skip. Measure it once, in the room where guests arrive, and let the number decide before you smell anything.
The rule: above about eleven feet, choose density over transparency. Below it, transparency wins on safety.
2
VARIABLE TWO · CLIMATE
What is already in the air, and what the season does to it
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuserSukoon₹1,899 · 270–320 sq ftEvery property has a resident smell before you add anything: salt and damp on a coast, deodar and woodsmoke in the hills, dust and traffic in a city, a kitchen in almost all of them. A fragrance either agrees with that or argues with it, and arguments are what guests notice. In heat and high humidity, warm materials read heavier than they measure, which makes an amber-weighted set the wrong instinct for a Goa or Kochi listing in August and the right one for Delhi in January. This is also where the format matters: an ultrasonic machine such as the Sukoon is water-based and adds a little humidity to the room, which is a fair trade in a dry winter and less welcome in a coastal monsoon. The Vaayu is waterless, so it adds fragrance without adding damp.
The tell: if the fragrance and the view disagree, the guest believes the view.
3
VARIABLE THREE · THE GUESTS
Who stays, and for how long
A three-night city booking and a three-week family stay are different scenting problems even in the same flat. Short stays are dominated by the arrival, which argues for a composition with enough presence to register in the first minute. Longer stays mean a guest lives inside the fragrance rather than meeting it, and anything characterful becomes tiring by the second week — that is the case for the lightest set, run on a short daily timer rather than continuously. Business travellers and mixed groups of strangers argue for the safest possible register; a family taking a villa for a wedding is a more forgiving audience. Where you know nothing at all about who is coming, the two transparent white teas are the compositions least likely to be the wrong choice, and least likely is the correct standard here.

Part two — property type to combo

Nine common Indian listings, the combo I would choose, and the fragrance within it I would lead on. "Lead on" matters because you have four bottles and a signature needs one — the rest are for the other properties you own, or for the day you change your mind.

The property map
Nine listings, the combo, and the one to lead on
Listing Combo Lead on Why the building says so
City 3BHK, ordinary ceilings ★ 1 · Luxury Hotel Collection Quiet Luxury Unknown guests, standard volume — the safest register wins
Coastal apartment or beach flat 2 · Fresh & Relaxing White Tea Serenity Humidity makes warm materials heavier; nothing ambery in this set
Hill-station cottage 1 · Luxury Hotel Collection Forest Suite Cedar and vetiver agree with the deodar already outside the window
Heritage haveli or period house 3 · Signature Luxury Old-World Glamour High ceilings swallow transparency; amber and woods hold their level
Plantation or garden bungalow 2 · Fresh & Relaxing Tea Garden Green tea and jasmine sit inside the landscape rather than over it
Double-height city loft 3 · Signature Luxury Lobby Bar Volume above nose level needs density and a peppery lift
Family villa, longer stays 3 · Signature Luxury Warm Welcome The friendliest of the seven — a lit room rather than a lobby
Business-traveller service flat 2 · Fresh & Relaxing Quiet Luxury Short stays, unknown occupants, maximum restraint
Studio or 1RK under ~300 sq ft None — do not buy a Vaayu A reed diffuser from ₹749 Too little volume; ₹11,999 here is an overpayment, not a signature
The honest caveat: this map is composer's judgement about how each register behaves in a given volume, not a measurement, and your building may disagree with it. The three combos are fixed at checkout and cannot be mixed. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil — the 400ml in the box is the whole supply today, and the water-based Hotel Collection for ultrasonic machines is a different product that must never be put in a Vaayu. Nothing in this table is a claim about ratings, reviews, bookings or occupancy, and nothing here is a health or air-quality claim.

Three formats, three very different price points
The SOSA principle
Choose the fragrance that agrees with the air already in the building.
Salt, deodar, dust and a kitchen are all present before you add anything. A composition that argues with them is the one guests notice, and noticing is the opposite of what this register is for.

Part three — running one scent from a set of four, and when this is the wrong answer

Here is the practical problem nobody mentions at checkout. You have decided on a signature — one fragrance, held — and the machine has arrived with four bottles of 100ml. The published specification is a 400ml tank and 90+ days per fill, which is arithmetic worth doing rather than assuming. Four hundred millilitres across ninety days is a little under four and a half millilitres a day at whatever run pattern that figure was measured on; on the same rate, a single 100ml bottle of your chosen signature is roughly three weeks. SOSA does not publish the run-hours assumption behind the 90-day figure, so treat every number in that sentence as arithmetic on two published specifications rather than as a measurement. What it tells you directionally is real, though: if you run the machine continuously, one fragrance does not last a quarter. Run it on a 4h timer around arrivals rather than 24h and the same bottle stretches considerably further, which for most listings is both cheaper and better — a guest wants a scented arrival, not a scented month.

That leads directly to the honest weak point of this purchase, and I would rather you heard it here than in month four. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil. The 400ml in the box is the supply available at the time of writing. The water-based Hotel Collection at ₹299 for 15ml, ₹999 for 100ml and ₹1,799 for 300ml is a different product, formulated for ultrasonic machines, and it must not be put into a Vaayu whatever the shared scent names suggest — the machine nebulises undiluted oil and a water-based fragrance is not that. Reed oil goes in neither. If you are planning a signature meant to run for years, ask SOSA where refills stand before you spend ₹11,999, and plan your run hours around the 400ml you will actually have. On the electricity side the arithmetic is friendlier: at 5W, twenty-four hours is 0.12 units, which at a notional ₹8 per unit is under a rupee a day — again arithmetic on a published rating, not a bill, and tariffs vary by state.

When this page is the wrong answer. If your listing is a studio, a single let room, or anything under roughly 300 sq ft of connected space, the fragrance question is real but the machine question is not: buy a reed diffuser from ₹749 or a Boond at ₹899 and put the ₹11,000 you saved into the mattress. If your property is pet-friendly, marketed fragrance-free, or handled by a rotating cleaning agency you cannot direct, then no combo is the right combo. And if what you specifically want is oud, we do not make it — there is no oud, no musk-forward composition and nothing aquatic anywhere in the SOSA range, and I would rather name the gap than sell you a cedar and hope you settle.

You are not choosing a fragrance you like. You are choosing the one your building will not argue with.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — by the machine you already own

Most hosts arrive at this page owning something already. This is what to buy for each, and where the honest limit of each sits.

The fragrance edit
What to buy for the machine you have
What you own What to buy for it What it will and will not do Price
A Vaayu Nothing further — the combo chosen at checkout is the supply Up to 1000m³. No separate refill oil is sold at present ₹11,999 including 400ml

A Boond The same water-based Hotel Collection, 15ml is plenty ~150 sq ft, ~6 hrs a fill. An arrival, not a property ₹899 + ₹299
A Megh The same water-based Hotel Collection ~100 hrs runtime but only ~215 sq ft — a runtime and humidity machine, and it covers less than a Sukoon ₹3,499 + fragrance
Reed diffusers Oil-only refills, or a second bottle Constant and passive; cannot be switched off or scheduled ₹2,399 / 300ml · ₹3,499 / 500ml
Nothing yet, one room A Sukoon, which arrives with three 15ml scents The most sensible first purchase for a small listing ₹1,899
Nothing yet, whole floor A Vaayu, combo chosen by property type Ask about refill availability before committing ₹11,999
Honest notes for buyers: the three lines of fragrance SOSA makes are not interchangeable. Cold-air oil supplied with the Vaayu is nebulised undiluted; the water-based Hotel Collection is for ultrasonic machines only; reed oil is for reed bottles only. No separate Vaayu refill oil is sold at the time of writing — confirm current availability with SOSA before buying if long-term supply matters. Runtime, coverage and per-fill figures are manufacturer specifications; any per-day or per-bottle number in this guide is arithmetic on those specifications rather than a measurement, and varies with intensity, run hours, ceiling height and ventilation. Electricity figures are arithmetic on a 5W rating and tariffs vary by state. Warranty length, AMC, installation service and spare parts are not published — ask SOSA. SOSA is an independent Indian house and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Nothing here claims an effect on ratings, reviews, bookings or occupancy, and nothing here is a health, mood or air-purification claim. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser for an Airbnb bedroom
For the rooms the machine cannot reach
SOSA Mountain Breeze · pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml
Scent does not pass a closed door, and in a listing the bedroom doors are usually shut. A reed diffuser is the right tool behind them: no electricity, nothing for a guest to switch, nothing to schedule. Mountain Breeze sits in the same dry-wood territory as the hotel register — Himalayan pine over sage and deodar cedar — which means it meets the machine's fragrance on a shared note rather than creating a seam at the doorway. 9.4 on SOSA's own internal strength scale at six reeds, which is our scale rather than an industry standard. 50ml runs 6–8 weeks, 130ml at ₹1,349 runs 14–18. Stand it on a tray and keep it away from children and pets.

A note from Sonal

The question I am asked is always "which one smells best", and the question I want to answer is "which one will your building not fight". Those are not the same, and the gap between them is where most disappointed purchases live. A composition is not a fixed object; it is a set of materials evaporating into a particular volume of a particular air. Change the ceiling height and you have changed the fragrance, even though the bottle is identical.

The clearest example I know is a host in Jaipur with a haveli and a friend in Bandra with a two-bedroom flat. They bought the same combo, ran the same fragrance, and one of them thought it was beautiful while the other thought it did nothing. Neither was wrong. Fourteen feet of ceiling takes a transparent white tea straight up and away, and there is no setting that fixes that — only a denser composition does.

I will repeat the supply note once more because it is the thing I would most want to be told if I were buying. The Vaayu arrives with 400ml and we do not currently sell a refill for it. Ask us where that stands before you commit, and plan your run hours accordingly — a four-hour daily schedule around arrivals is better hospitality than a machine running all month, and it makes what you have go a great deal further. Everything we make is composed in Pune or built in India, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Which SOSA Hotel Collection fragrance is best for Airbnb guests?
Choose by property rather than preference. Coastal, humid or compact listings take Combo 2 and lead on White Tea Serenity. High-ceilinged, large or period properties take Combo 3 and lead on Old-World Glamour. Everything else, or genuine uncertainty, takes Combo 1 and leads on Quiet Luxury, which is the least likely of the seven to be the wrong choice for guests you know nothing about.
Can I choose my own four fragrances?
No. The Vaayu ships with one of three fixed combos, selected at checkout, four fragrances at 100ml each, and the price is the same for all three. Pick the set whose majority suits your property rather than chasing a single bottle.
How long does one fragrance last in a Vaayu?
The published specifications are a 400ml tank and 90+ days per fill, so a single 100ml bottle is roughly a quarter of that on the same run pattern — about three weeks. Treat that as arithmetic on two published figures rather than a measurement, since the run-hours assumption behind the 90-day number is not published. Running a 4h timer around arrivals rather than continuously stretches it considerably.
Where do I buy more Vaayu oil?
You cannot at the moment — SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil, and the 400ml supplied in the box is the whole supply available today. The water-based Hotel Collection is a different product made for ultrasonic machines and must not be used in a Vaayu. Ask SOSA about current refill availability before buying if long-term supply matters to you.
My listing is a studio. Which combo should I choose?
None — do not buy the machine. Under roughly 300 sq ft there is not enough volume to justify it, and ₹11,999 in that room is an overpayment rather than a signature. One 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 near the door, or a Boond at ₹899 run before check-in, is the honest answer.
