Four Sukoons · duplex
Far corner from the staircase — that is the single biggest placement gain A metre off the floor, out of the throw of a fan or AC Upstairs: deep into the bedroom, away from the landing door

Move one machine six feet in a duplex and you change two rooms on two different floors. That is not true in a flat, where placement is a local question about one space, and it is the reason so much duplex advice fails: every ground-floor position is also an upstairs decision. The staircase is drawing air upward all day, so a diffuser near the foot of it is quietly feeding the landing and starving the living room. The same machine in the far corner does the opposite.
Quick answers — read this first
Downstairs: far corner from the staircase, a metre off the floor, two machines at opposite ends rather than one in the middle.

Upstairs: deep into the bedroom, near the bed, away from the door onto the landing.

Nowhere: the staircase, the landing, a mezzanine rail, or directly under a split AC.
The short answer
Short answer: Downstairs, place each Sukoon as far from the foot of the staircase as the room allows, roughly a metre off the floor, with two machines at opposite ends of an open living-dining rather than one in the middle. Upstairs, place deep inside each bedroom, away from the landing door.
The pick: The Sukoon at ₹1,899 — 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, and timers that let the two floors run on different schedules. Every unit includes three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances.
Do not place: On the stairs, on the landing, on a gallery rail, on a high ledge in a double-height room, or in the direct throw of a ceiling fan or split AC. All five put fragrance into moving air.
Straight answer
Where should diffusers go in a duplex?
1. Downstairs, as far from the stair foot as the room allows. The base of the staircase is where the upward current begins. A machine within a couple of metres of it exports most of what it makes. The far corner of the living-dining is the best position in the house and it costs nothing to use.

2. Two machines at opposite ends, not two side by side. In an open ground floor, separation is what produces an even room. Two Sukoons a few feet apart give you one loud patch; the same two at opposite ends give you a room.

3. About a metre off the floor. A console, a sideboard, a low shelf. Mist disperses outward and settles downward, so a machine on the floor spends its output on the skirting. Leave a foot of clear space around it so mist does not condense on a wall or curtain.

4. Upstairs, deep into the room. Bedrooms receive borrowed scent through the doorway from the landing, so a machine placed near that door piles fragrance where there is already some. Put it on the far side of the room, near the bed rather than the entrance.

5. Never on the stairs, the landing or a gallery rail. All three are moving air or shared air. A staircase carries fragrance away; a gallery over a double-height room is the top half of the room below and is already scented by it.

TL;DR: downstairs, put machines in the far corner from the staircase, a metre up, at opposite ends of an open room. Upstairs, put them deep inside bedrooms and away from the landing door. Put nothing on the stairs, the landing or a gallery — and nothing in the throw of a fan or AC.
SOSA Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
Placement matters more than the model
SOSA Sukoon · 500ml ₹1,899
270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours a fill on low, a remote so you are not walking across a large ground floor, and steady / 2H / 4H timers so the two floors can run at different times. Three 15ml Hotel Collection scents are in the box.

Every downstairs placement is also an upstairs decision

In a single-floor home, placement is a question about one room: get the machine away from the draught, off the floor, out of the corner where a curtain will absorb the mist, and the job is done. A duplex adds a second axis. There is a continuous, gentle upward current through the stairwell — warm air from the ground floor rising because the house is warmer at the bottom and there is a vertical path — and the strength of that current at any given point on your ground floor depends on how close you are to the stairs. Position is a dial. Put a diffuser two metres from the stair foot and a large share of its output is upstairs within the hour: the landing smells lovely, the sofa smells of very little. Put the same machine in the opposite corner and the room holds it, while a soft trace still finds its way up.

That gives you a control most people never use. If your upstairs feels heavy in the evenings, you probably do not need to change fragrance or reduce drops — you need to move a ground-floor machine further from the stairs. If your upstairs feels flat, move one closer. The same reasoning inverts on the first floor: the landing doorway is the point at which borrowed scent enters a bedroom, so a machine standing near that door is stacking new fragrance exactly where old fragrance is arriving, which reads as a strong doorway and a thin bed. Place upstairs machines as deep into their rooms as the furniture allows and the two supplies meet in the middle instead of piling up at the entrance.

The three placement decisions

1
DECISION ONE · THE GROUND FLOOR MAP
Far from the stairs, a metre up, well apart
SOSA Sukoon diffuserSOSA Sukoon₹1,899Start from the staircase and walk away from it. The best position in a duplex is the far corner of the living-dining, roughly a metre off the floor, with clear air around it. If you run two Sukoons down here — and most duplexes should — put them at opposite ends of the space rather than in the same half. Keep both out of the kitchen's line, away from the front door, and out of the direct throw of a ceiling fan or split AC, which relocates mist rather than spreading it. A ground-floor study or guest room takes the third machine, and that one is easy: a door that shuts makes placement forgiving.
The rule: distance from the stair foot is the most valuable free variable you have.
2
DECISION TWO · THE UPPER FLOOR MAP
Deep into the room, low, away from the door
Upstairs the geometry reverses. Every bedroom that opens onto the landing is already taking a thin supply of ground-floor fragrance through its doorway, so the doorway is the last place a machine should stand. Put the bedroom Sukoon on the far wall — a chest of drawers, a bedside table, a low shelf — and keep it about a metre up. Two to three drops rather than four, because the room is not starting from zero. A small second bedroom that stays shut is the one position where a Boond at ₹899 genuinely fits: 150 sq ft of coverage, six hours a fill, and nothing more is needed.
The test: if the bedroom smells strongest at the door and weakest at the pillow, the machine is too close to the landing.
3
DECISION THREE · THE FIVE PLACES NOT TO PUT ONE
All of them involve moving or borrowed air
The staircase, because it is a rising column that removes fragrance faster than a machine makes it. The landing, because it is already receiving from below and nobody stands there. A gallery rail over a double-height room, because that gallery is the upper half of the room downstairs and the current there runs outward. A high ledge in a tall room, for the same reason — the occupied layer is at seating height and everything above it is on its way to the stairwell. And directly under a split AC or in the sweep of a ceiling fan, anywhere in the house. If you have a machine in any of those five positions, moving it is worth more than buying another one.

The placement map, both floors

Position by position, with the reason attached — because the reason is what lets you adapt it to your own layout. Coverage ratings assume a closed room without a strong draught, so an open stairwell, a fan or an open window all reduce what a well-placed machine achieves.

Duplex placement map
Where each machine stands, and where it must not
Space Put it here Not here Why
Open living-dining ★ Far corner from the stairs, a metre up Beside the staircase The stair foot exports scent upward
Open living-dining, second machine Opposite end of the room Within a few feet of the first Separation makes a room; proximity makes a patch
Double-height living room Seating height, low furniture A high ledge or gallery rail The upper layer drains into the stairwell
Ground-floor study or guest room Anywhere a metre up, door shut In the doorway A closed door holds fragrance almost completely
Master bedroom, upstairs Far wall, near the bed Beside the landing door Borrowed scent already arrives at the door
Small upstairs bedroom Boond ₹899 on a bedside table A Sukoon at full drops 150 sq ft is the right size for the room
Staircase, landing, gallery Nothing Any machine at all Moving air, borrowed air, and nobody stands still
Airflow beats everything: a machine in the throw of a ceiling fan or a split AC will produce a strong wall and a flat room whatever else you get right. And for more area, add another Sukoon — never a Megh, which costs ₹3,499 and is rated to 215 sq ft against the Sukoon's 270–320. The Megh is a hundred-hour runtime and humidity machine for one dry room.

What you are placing — and the small machine for the small upstairs room
The SOSA principle
The staircase is a dial you already own. Move a machine towards it to scent upstairs, away from it to scent downstairs.
No purchase involved. In a duplex, distance from the stair foot changes the balance between floors more than drops or fragrance ever will.

Height, distance and when each floor runs

Height is the same everywhere in the house and people still get it wrong: about a metre off the floor, on furniture rather than on the ground, with a hand's width of clear air on every side. Mist that hits a wall, a curtain or the back of a sofa condenses instead of dispersing, which is a slow and invisible way to waste fragrance. The one exception to "higher is better than lower" is a double-height room, where higher is actively wrong — there, a metre is a ceiling rather than a floor, and anything above sofa height is being released into air that is leaving.

Distance is the duplex-specific variable. Downstairs, measure it from the staircase: further is better, and the far corner of the open area is the best seat in the house. Between two machines on the same floor, further apart is better, because you are building an even layer rather than a strong point. Upstairs, measure it from the bedroom door: further into the room is better. Then set the drops to match — three to four per tank downstairs where you are replacing a constant loss, and two to three upstairs where the room already carries a trace of the ground floor.

Schedule ties it together. Run the ground-floor machines on a two-hour timer from late afternoon, which gives the stairwell time to carry a soft version upstairs before anyone goes to bed, and run bedroom machines for an hour before sleep. If the upstairs reads heavy, move a downstairs machine further from the stairs before you touch the drops. If a bedroom reads flat, move its machine deeper into the room. Rinse tanks between fragrances, use filtered water in hard-water cities, and never put raw essential or carrier oil into an ultrasonic machine — it will foul the misting plate.

Almost every duplex I have been asked to fix was solved by moving two machines, not by selling a third.

Honest notes before you buy: try the free fix for a week before you buy anything — in a duplex, repositioning solves more problems than a purchase does. These are ultrasonic, water-based fragrances and add a little humidity to the room. The machines (Boond, Sukoon, Megh) are imported from China; the Hotel Collection fragrances are composed and made in India. They are not for reed diffusers and not for the waterless Vaayu (₹11,999) or Aangan (₹25,999), which nebulise neat oil and cannot take a water-based fragrance at all — the Vaayu is worth considering only for a very large connected open ground floor. Use filtered water in hard-water areas, rinse the tank between scents, keep fragrance away from children and pets. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

I visited a house in Kalyani Nagar where the owner had six machines and was convinced she needed an eighth. Five of the six were within three metres of the staircase, because that is where the plug points were. The house was scenting its own landing beautifully and nothing else.

We moved four of them and turned two off. It cost nothing and the difference was obvious the same evening. I think about that visit whenever someone asks me which machine is stronger, because strength was never the variable — the building was taking the fragrance away faster than any machine could supply it, and the only fix was to stop standing next to the exit.

Walk your ground floor away from the stairs and put the machines at the end of that walk. Walk into each bedroom past the door and put those machines there. Then leave the stairs, the landing and the gallery entirely alone. A portion of every order goes to girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I place a diffuser in a duplex living room?
As far from the foot of the staircase as the room allows, about a metre off the floor, with clear air around it. The stair foot is where the upward current begins, so a machine near it sends much of its output to the landing. If you have two Sukoons downstairs, put them at opposite ends rather than in the same half of the room.
Should a diffuser go on the duplex landing?
No. The landing is a transit space that is already receiving fragrance from the floor below, and the air there is in motion, so a machine standing in it disperses into a draught. It is the most commonly wasted position in a two-floor home. Use that machine in a bedroom, where a closed door will hold what it makes.
Where do diffusers go in duplex bedrooms?
Deep into the room and away from the door onto the landing, at about a metre off the floor — a chest of drawers or a bedside table on the far wall. Borrowed scent from downstairs arrives through the doorway, so a machine placed there stacks fragrance at the entrance and leaves the bed thin. Two to three drops is usually right upstairs.
Can I fix a weak-smelling duplex without buying another diffuser?
Usually, yes. Move ground-floor machines further from the staircase, raise them to about a metre, separate two machines to opposite ends of an open room, and take everything out of the throw of a fan or split AC. Those four free changes solve most duplex complaints. Buy a fifth machine only after they have been tried.
Where should a diffuser go in a double-height room?
Low — at seating height, on a console or side table, never on a high ledge or a gallery rail. The upper part of a double-height space is connected to the stairwell, so anything released up there leaves the room rather than settling into it. Two machines low at opposite ends beat one machine anywhere high.
