Nine situations where the honest answer is no, and we would rather tell you that than take an order that will not work.
Quick answers — read this first
When should a business not use commercial scenting? When there is a smell with a source, when the space is semi-open, when staff occupy it, when the room's own materials are the asset, when nobody will own the level, and when the reason for buying is a promised commercial return.

Does SOSA recommend against selling in some cases? Yes. Semi-open spaces, work floors, clinical treatment areas, workshops and coating bays, and any room where a smell needs fixing at source are all cases where we would decline rather than specify a lower setting.

What if the motivation is increased sales? Then the premise is wrong. SOSA makes no claim that scenting affects footfall, enquiries, dwell time or sales, and a purchase made on that expectation is a disappointment waiting to happen.
The short answer
Short answer: Nine cases. And we would rather decline than take the order.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 per enclosed room on Hotel Collection fragrance from ₹299, with an Aangan at ₹25,999 or a Meenar at ₹38,500 only where the air volume genuinely calls for it.
Sizing? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your room-by-room areas and ceiling heights, AC type, door traffic, which zones must stay unscented, and who will own the setting day to day - remote sizing from your own measurements, no site visit needed outside Pune.
How SOSA sizes a commercial space - the order that actually worksStep 1 - find the source: solvents, sanitiser, footwear, drains, AC filters, stale airStep 2 - draw the air volume, not the floor plan: doors and partitions divide itStep 3 - decide which zones stay unscented, and write that downStep 4 - set intensity low and schedule it around your peakStep 5 - re-check after two weeks, then leave it alone
Commercial scenting goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody buys a machine to cover a smell that has a source, puts it where the socket is, runs it at full intensity because day one felt weak, and ends up with a room people comment on for the wrong reason. Source first, air volume second, unscented zones written down third, low intensity and a schedule fourth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA machine range at each size.
Straight answer
When should a business decide against commercial scenting?
Nine situations, and several of them are common. One: there is a smell with a source. Drains, a drain pan, damp, bins, a kitchen, absorbed upholstery. Fragrance adds rather than removes, and the mixture is worse than the original and reads as covering. Fix it, then reconsider. Two: the space is semi-open. A courtyard, a covered forecourt, a lobby with automatic doors, a hall with vehicle doors, a terrace. These hold nothing at any output, and a larger machine buys more consumption rather than more coverage. Three: staff occupy the space. Staff work floors are not scented. Ask the people who sit there individually and privately, and treat one objection as decisive - it is a veto, not a vote. A work floor where somebody sits for nine hours is not a candidate, and one considered objection settles it. Four: it is a clinical treatment area. A patient on a table cannot leave, and we do not scent those. Nor do we support marketing a fragrance as calming or therapeutic, which for a healthcare provider is a health claim. Five: it is a workshop, service bay, coating or paint area. Technicians use smell diagnostically, and covering that removes information people rely on. Six: the room's own materials are the asset. Furniture and interiors showrooms, a bakery, a leather business, a coffee roaster. The wood, leather, bread or coffee smell is evidence customers read, and competing with it is a loss - this is the category where we most often recommend against the purchase. Seven: nobody will own the level. With no named owner, no written target, no key-lock and no recheck dates, the level only moves upward, and in a year the room is heavier than anybody intended. An unowned installation is worse than none. Eight: the money is needed elsewhere in the same room. Worn seating, a broken coffee machine, an unchecked washroom, cleaning at the wrong frequency. All noticed on every visit, all costing about what a machine costs. Nine: the reason for buying is a promised commercial return. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting affects footfall, enquiries, dwell time, conversion or sales, and we make no therapeutic, psychological or air-purification claims for any fragrance. If a supplier has given you a figure, ask what it was measured against; a purchase made on that expectation is a disappointment waiting to happen, and the ratio argument - small next to a large sale - would justify any purchase at all and so justifies none. Where it does work. An enclosed room, occupied by customers for a real period, that already smells of nothing in particular, with a named owner and a written target, bought as upkeep rather than as a growth measure. In that case a Vaayu at ₹11,999 on fragrance from ₹299 is a reasonable small line, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Key-lock the unit, write the target as a perceived level rather than a dial number, name one owner, and allow changes only at a scheduled recheck. Drift happens through small reasonable adjustments nobody reverses. Fragrance is an ambience decision and never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control.
One line: an unowned installation is worse than no installation.
Only when the room and the governance are both ready: ₹11,999. From ₹299.

Nine reasons to say no

We would rather decline an order than specify a machine into a situation it cannot help.

Why this works
Nine reasons to say no
1 A smell with a source; a semi-open space; a space staff occupy 2 A clinical treatment area; a workshop, service bay or coating area 3 A room where wood, leather, bread or coffee is the asset 4 No named owner; money needed elsewhere in the room; a promised return
Per enclosed room, on air volume: SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, fragrance from ₹299, larger connected volumes on Aangan at ₹25,999 or Meenar at ₹38,500.
01
Unowned is worse than none
The level only goes up
Without a named owner, a written target, a key-lock and recheck dates, every adjustment is upward and unrecorded. A year later the room is heavier than anybody intended and nobody can say how, which is worse than never starting.
Tip: No owner, no purchase.
02
Sometimes the room wins
Wood, leather, bread, coffee
Those smells are evidence customers read, and a fragrance competing with them takes something real away. This is the category where we most often recommend against buying, and we would rather say it than sell.
Tip: Your stock already smells right.
03
A promised return is a red flag
Ask what it measured
SOSA makes no claim about footfall, enquiries or sales, and the ratio argument would justify any purchase whatsoever. A machine bought on an expected return is a disappointment scheduled in advance.
Tip: If it justifies everything, it justifies nothing.
The SOSA principle
An unowned installation is worse than no installation at all.
Because the only direction an unowned level ever moves is up.

The cases where it does work

Where it does work, the right register is the restrained one, because the whole objective is a room that reads as considered rather than as scented.

The SOSA scent edit
Say no, or proceed
Scent Why it suits the mood
Say no A source smell, a semi-open space, or a space staff occupy
Say no Treatment areas, workshops and coating bays
Say no Where the stock's own smell is the asset, or nobody will own it
Proceed Enclosed, customer-occupied, already clean, owned - ₹11,999

The ratio argument would justify any purchase at all, which is exactly why it justifies none.

The SOSA commercial range

Whatever the space, the method is the same: find the source of any smell and fix it, draw the air volume rather than the floor plan, write down which zones stay unscented, then set a low intensity and a schedule. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the size of space it is honestly built for.

The SOSA commercial range
Sized by air volume, not by ambition - from a ₹749 reed diffuser to the ₹38,500 Meenar
Option Right for What it actually is Price
Reed diffusers One small room, no power point, no maintenance Alcohol-free reed oil, passive, silent. Good for a single cabin or a small front desk, not for a hall from ₹749
Boond / Sukoon ultrasonic A desk, a single cabin, a small reception Water-based cool mist; runs on Hotel Collection fragrance, adds a little humidity to the room ₹899 / ₹1,899
Megh ultrasonic (6L) A larger waiting area where visible mist is wanted 6L tank, water-based. Still a room machine rather than a floor machine ₹3,499
SOSA Vaayu Reception, lounge, corridor, a contained showroom floor Waterless cold-air, up to 1000m³ (about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank, app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, under 38 dB, key-lock for public areas ₹11,999
SOSA Aangan Large premises, or scenting carried on the building's own HVAC HVAC-mount nebulising machine, 800ml, roughly 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft, under 42 dB ₹25,999
SOSA Meenar Hotels, large showrooms, venues, corporate floors The largest machine in the range, specified for roughly 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft ₹38,500
Hotel Collection fragrance The fragrance the machines actually run on Seven scents, 15ml / 100ml / 300ml. SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand from ₹299
Honest notes on a whole-business decision: fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control, and any odour with a source is a source-control matter first. Machines are specified by air volume including ceiling height rather than by floor area or by budget, and a larger machine is not a better one in a smaller volume. Open and semi-open spaces cannot hold fragrance at any output. Levels drift upward when nobody owns them, so a named owner, a written setting and a fixed review date are part of the specification rather than an afterthought. SOSA makes no claim that ambient scenting increases footfall, enquiries, conversion, retention, referrals, transaction value or customer spend, and no such claim should be made on the strength of this guide. Where association language is used it is descriptive of ordinary experience - people come to associate a place with how it feels - and is not a commercial performance claim. Ultrasonic diffusers and the machines run on the Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. SOSA's fragrances are made in India; the scent machines are imported. Listed prices are store prices and are subject to change. SOSA's paid on-site walkthrough is ₹1,500 and is Pune only - everywhere else, sizing is done remotely over WhatsApp from your own measurements. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.

A note from Sonal

By the time somebody in Ahmedabad calls me about scenting, they have usually decided to buy something and want help choosing it. The most useful thing I can do at that point is slow the order down by one conversation, because the sequence matters more than the product: source control, then ventilation, then cleaning, then lighting and upkeep, and only then the air. A machine bought before those are settled will be blamed for problems it was never able to solve.

Then the sizing, which is where money is most often wasted in both directions. Air volume decides the machine, not floor area and not budget. A double-height gallery and a low-ceilinged reception of identical floor area are different problems, and a business that buys the largest unit because it is the most expensive usually ends up running it at its lowest setting forever. If the smallest machine is enough, I will say so.

And the part nobody plans for: ownership. A level that nobody owns drifts upward, because staff stop noticing it and turn it up. One named person, one written setting, one fixed date to check it - that is the whole of the governance, and it is the difference between a room that reads as considered in year three and one that reads as heavy. Fragrance is an ambience decision, never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control, and I make no claim about what it returns commercially. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Then the premise is wrong. SOSA makes no claim that scenting affects footfall, enquiries or sales.
When does it work?

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the sizing and zoning method applies whatever equipment a business finally buys.

Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance is an ambience decision only and is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or source control. Coverage is determined by air volume including ceiling height rather than by floor area, and fragrance does not travel through closed doors, so a multi-room premises is specified by counting qualifying volumes rather than rooms. Open and semi-open spaces cannot hold fragrance at any output. Perceived intensity falls with habituation, which is why an unowned setting tends to be increased over time; a named owner, a written level and a fixed review date are part of the specification. Running cost comprises fragrance consumption, electricity and filter upkeep and varies with runtime, setting and volume.
