✓ A gift heavier than the relationship can hold does not read as gratitude. It reads as a transaction the other person did not agree to enter.✓ The weight of this one belongs in what you write. Four specific sentences about what changed will outlast anything you can put in a box.✓ Made in India · independent, not affiliated with any hotel · a portion funds girl-child education

There is a particular kind of debt that comes from somebody redirecting your working life, and the trouble with it is that it has no size. You cannot convert it into a figure, which means you cannot match it with an object, which means every attempt leaves you unsatisfied and the recipient uneasy.
Quick answers — read this first
What should you give somebody who changed your career? Something deliberately smaller than what you feel you owe, with a letter that carries the weight instead. The instinct is to scale the gift to the debt, and it does not work, because the debt has no size and the object then reads as an attempt to settle rather than to thank. A 3ml attar at ₹379 or a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 is the right scale. The letter should name the decision that went differently, roughly when, and where you ended up. That is the part worth the effort.
Why does an expensive gift feel wrong in this situation? Because it turns an open relationship into a closed transaction. A large gift implies a sum, the sum implies a settlement, and the person who helped you did not do it to be repaid and may not want to be told that an account existed. There is also the ordinary asymmetry: this person is usually senior to you and better placed, so cost cannot carry a message between you the way it would between peers. Keep the object modest and the warmth entirely in the words.
How do you actually repay somebody who changed your career? You do not, and that is not a failure. The honest discharge of this particular debt is to do the same thing for somebody junior to you, which is what most people who mentor were hoping for when they started. Tell your mentor that you have done it, by name and with specifics; for many of them that is the most welcome sentence in the letter. The object, meanwhile, remains what the letter arrives in, and it stays small.
The short answer
Short answer: Something smaller than you feel you owe, with the weight in what you write. The debt from a redirected career has no size, so it cannot be matched by an object, and a large one turns an open relationship into a closed transaction. A 3ml attar at ₹379 or a 50ml reed at ₹749, plus a letter naming the decision that went differently.
The pick:SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml where you know their taste runs light — or SOSA Morning Freshness at ₹749 where you do not, and the room is the safer answer.
Next step: Tell us what changed and how you know them, and we will suggest something at the right scale. Ask SOSA to help choose a gift.
The instinct to scale the gift to the gratitude is the one thing to resist here, and resisting it is what makes the gesture land as a thank-you rather than as a settlement.
How do you thank somebody whose advice changed the direction of your working life?
Start by noticing what kind of debt this is. It has no quantity. You cannot say what a redirected career is worth, because the version of your life where the conversation did not happen does not exist — you have no idea what it would have looked like, and neither does the person who redirected it. A debt with no size cannot be matched by an object, and this is the whole source of the difficulty people feel here. They go shopping looking for something proportionate, find nothing, and conclude they have not looked hard enough. The correct move is to make the object deliberately smaller. Not as a compromise: as the point. A gift sized to the gratitude turns an open relationship into a closed transaction, and a closed transaction is not what the other person entered into. Most people who help somebody's career do it without any expectation of return, and being handed a large present can read as being told, politely, that an account existed and is now being cleared. Very few mentors want that. Then put the weight where it belongs, which is in the writing. Name the decision that went differently because of them — the job you took, the one you turned down, the field you switched into, the conversation you stopped avoiding. Say roughly when it was. Say where you ended up. Concrete, dated, and shorter than you think. A page of adjectives about their wisdom does nothing for them; four specific sentences do, because almost nobody ever sends them. Then, if you want to, say the other thing. The honest discharge of this debt is not a parcel at all — it is doing the same for somebody junior to you, and telling the person who did it for you that you have. For many mentors that sentence is the most welcome part of the letter, because it is the only evidence they ever get that the thing they do propagates. And then buy something small. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 where you know their taste; a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 where you do not, which is the safer answer and asks nothing of them; a 130ml reed at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 where the relationship is long and personal. The object is the envelope. If you want a second opinion on the scale, ask us to help choose a gift.
The debt has no size, so stop trying to match it. Small object, specific letter, and the real discharge is doing the same for somebody junior to you.
Where you know their taste and it runs light, SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml — bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac. Small, worn and unfussy, which is exactly the register this gift wants.
On sizing, because it is not the interesting part of this page. A 50ml reed suits a desk or a cabin and a 130ml suits a home; a 3ml attar is a few weeks of use and a 12ml is most of a year. Nothing we make sits under ₹300, and if that is your budget the letter alone is the honest answer.
Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four and the only one with no oudh. 3ml ₹379, 6ml ₹669, 12ml ₹1,149.
Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus. Passive, clean and ungendered, and it asks nothing of the person who receives it. The safer answer whenever the taste is a guess. 50ml ₹749, 130ml ₹1,249.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry and unsweet, with nothing decorative about it, which suits a working room and keeps the gift looking modest. 50ml ₹849, 130ml ₹1,349.
Alcohol-free and DPG-free oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier; six to eight hours on skin.
Three things worth getting straight, and none of them are about the shopping.
1
First, the shape of the debt
It has no size, which is why no object fits it
People come to this question looking for something proportionate and leave frustrated, and the frustration has a cause worth naming. A redirected career has no measurable value, because the version of your life where the conversation did not happen does not exist and cannot be priced. That makes proportionality unavailable as a standard. Once you accept that, the search changes: you are no longer looking for an object that matches, because there is nothing to match against. You are looking for an object small enough to be clearly a gesture, and words specific enough to say what actually happened. The relief in that is real. It turns an impossible shopping problem into an ordinary evening of writing, which is a thing you can actually do well.
Tip: If you catch yourself comparing prices to decide which one feels grateful enough, stop. That scale does not exist here.
2
Second, what a large gift does
It closes something the other person left open
Somebody who changed your career almost certainly did not do it as an investment. They did it because they had time, or because somebody once did it for them, or because they liked the look of what you might become. A large gift arriving afterwards implies that an account was running and is now being settled, and settlement closes a relationship that had been comfortably open. It also forces a reaction: the recipient must either accept something out of scale or explain why they are not, and neither is a nice position to put somebody in after everything else they did for you. A modest object avoids the whole structure. It says thank you and leaves the relationship exactly where it was, which is usually where both of you want it.
Do the same for somebody junior, and say that you have
If the debt bothers you — and in this particular case it usually does, for years — there is one way to act on it that is not a parcel. Mentor somebody earlier in their own career, properly, with the time and the honesty you were given. Then write and tell the person who did it for you, by name and with the specifics. That sentence is often the most welcome thing in the whole letter, because mentors have no other way of finding out whether the practice travels; they do it on faith and then hear nothing. Reporting back that it went somewhere is the one piece of news only you can deliver, and it does more than any object at any price. The gift, meanwhile, stays small and sits beside it.
The SOSA principle
A debt with no quantity cannot be settled with one. That is not a problem to solve by spending more; it is a reason to spend less and write better.
That is an observation about proportion, and we make no claim that any gift changes a relationship or what either person thinks of the other.
Small, worn and deliberate: Adaa, 3ml at ₹379. Bergamot, cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac. The lightest of the four, no oudh.
Nobody who redirects a career does it as an investment. A gift large enough to look like repayment tells them an account was running, and most would rather it had not been.

Where the weight goes
Into the writing, and into what you do for the next person
The SOSA specification, at the scale this gift wants
One small object at a scale that reads as thanks, sent with a letter that does the actual work, and ideally with one sentence about the person you have since helped. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Two limits worth keeping in view. If anything professional is still running between you — a reference, a role, a contract — wait until it closes, because a gift arriving mid-decision gets read against the decision. And nothing in our range sits below ₹300; the 15ml bottles at ₹299 are machine refills rather than gifts, so below that the letter alone is the whole answer. We make no promise about delivery timing, gift wrapping or personalisation.

A note from Sonal
I have had my own version of this, and the thing I remember is how long I put off writing anything. Not from ingratitude — from the sense that whatever I sent would be insufficient, which is a very comfortable reason to do nothing at all. It took me far too long to work out that insufficiency was the wrong standard, and that four honest sentences would have been fine in the first year.
What finally helped was realising the debt had no number attached to it. Once a thing cannot be measured, it cannot be matched, and the whole shopping exercise collapses into something much easier: buy a small nice object, and spend the evening writing what actually happened. The second part is harder than the first and it is the part that matters. Nobody else can write it.
Keep the object small and let it be used up. This is an ambience decision and not a claim of any kind — nothing therapeutic, nothing medical, and nothing about what a gift does to a relationship or to anybody's feelings, which are theirs. No product here masks or covers a smell in a room, and the person who receives a reed decides where it goes and whether they use it. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
What should I gift somebody who changed my career?
Something deliberately smaller than what you feel you owe, with a letter carrying the weight. The debt has no size, so no object can match it, and a large one reads as settling an account rather than saying thank you. A 3ml attar at Rs 379 or a 50ml reed at Rs 749 is the right scale.
Why not spend a lot, given what they did for me?
Because cost cannot carry this message and the attempt changes its meaning. A large gift implies a sum and a settlement, and most people who redirect somebody's career were not running an account. It also puts the recipient in the position of accepting something out of scale or explaining why they are not.
What do I write?
Name the decision that went differently because of them, say roughly when, and say where you ended up. Four specific sentences, not a page of adjectives. If you have since done the same for somebody junior to you, say so by name — mentors almost never find out whether the practice travels, and that is the one sentence only you can send.
Is there any way to actually repay them?
Not in the sense of settling, and that is not a failure. The honest discharge is doing the same for somebody earlier in their career, with the time and the honesty you were given. Telling your own mentor that you have done it is the closest thing to repayment this relationship has, and it costs nothing.
Should I give a worn fragrance or something for the room?
The room, unless you genuinely know their taste. A reed diffuser sits on a shelf, needs no power and assumes nothing about what somebody wears or whether they wear scent at all. Where you do know, a 3ml attar at Rs 379 is small and unfussy and suits this gift well.
Only for a long, personal relationship: The Attar Trio at ₹1,055 for three 3ml bottles, which hands the taste decision back where it belongs.
SOSA — Clinic Scentingfor the person whose advice sent your working life somewhere else
