Ask people to describe the best-smelling homes they have been in and the words come back remarkably consistent: clean, fresh, warm, calm, expensive. Nobody says strong. Nobody says sweet. Two free ways to find out what your house actually smells like

There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.

How do I honestly test what my own house smells like?
Two methods, both free, both worth building into the routine.
