Founder Diaries · Thinking-of-You & Cheer-Up Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
You want to tell somebody you were thinking about them, and you do not want it read as anything else. That is a register problem, not a taste problem, and it is worth treating as one, because a gift you have to explain afterwards has already gone wrong. Four things push a fragrance gift towards romance - size, whether it is worn on the body, whether it is coded to evenings and candlelight, and whether it touches skin - and once you can see them, steering around them is straightforward.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser · Malabar lemon and mint ₹749 →
The cleanest register in the range. Morning Freshness, ₹749 in 50ml - Malabar lemon and mint, running about 6 to 10 weeks with nothing to plug in or light. It is bought for a room rather than a person, its scent is daytime rather than evening, and nothing in it goes on anybody's skin. That is why it leads a page about not being misread.
Quick answers — read this first
What makes a gift seem romantic when you did not mean it to? Four things, roughly in order. Size: past about ₹1,000 with no occasion, a gift starts making a statement. Worn fragrance: choosing how a person smells is more intimate than choosing what their hallway smells of. Evening coding: two candles, anything shaped like a set for a night in. Body products: anything applied to skin. Avoid all four and the register looks after itself.

What is a safe non-romantic fragrance gift? Something for the room, at a plain price, in a daylight-coded scent. A single candle at ₹399, or a Morning Freshness reed diffuser at ₹749 in Malabar lemon and mint. Car fragrance from ₹449 is the most unambiguous of all - nobody has ever read a car scent as a declaration.

Which SOSA product should I not send a friend? The SOSA body massage candle at ₹699. It is a body product rather than a room candle, and between the word massage and the fact that it goes on skin it is precisely the wrong register for a friendship. The same caution applies to solid body perfumes and to a two-candle duo, which reads as a set for an evening rather than a passing thought.
The short answer
Short answer: Buy for the room, not the body. A single candle at Rs 399 or a Morning Freshness reed diffuser at Rs 749 in lemon and mint reads as clearly friendly. Keep it under Rs 1,000, avoid anything applied to skin, and do not send the SOSA body massage candle at Rs 699 to a friend.
The pick: The Morning Freshness reed diffuser, ₹749 in 50ml - Malabar lemon and mint, for a room rather than a person.
Why: It is bought for a space, its scent is daytime and practical rather than evening-coded, and it sits under the price where a gift starts to make a statement.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
What can I send to say I am thinking about you without it seeming romantic?
Send something for their room, at a plain price, in a scent that reads as daytime. A single candle at ₹399 or a Morning Freshness reed diffuser at ₹749 - Malabar lemon and mint, 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks - are the two clearest choices, and car fragrance from ₹449 is more unambiguous still, because a car scent is a piece of equipment and nobody reads equipment as a declaration. What to avoid is anything worn or applied. A 3ml attar at ₹379 is a lovely gift and a slightly warmer one, because you have chosen how somebody smells rather than what their hallway smells of - fine between old friends, less so in a new friendship. The SOSA body massage candle at ₹699 is a body product rather than a room candle and is simply the wrong register here; so is a two-candle duo, which looks like a set for an evening rather than a passing thought. Keep it under ₹1,000, send one plain line saying what made you think of them, and if you would need to explain the gift afterwards, send a different one. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The one-line rule: buy for the room, not for the body, and stay under ₹1,000. Almost every awkward fragrance gift between friends breaks one of those two halves.
The cleanest register in the range: a Morning Freshness reed diffuser at ₹749, Malabar lemon and mint. Bought for a room, daytime rather than evening, and nothing goes on anybody.
SOSA reed diffusers from ₹749

What makes a gift read as romantic

Register is readable and it is fairly mechanical. A gift carries signals about size, about proximity to the body, and about time of day, and a recipient reads all three in about a second without thinking about it. Here is how each one works, and how to set it where you want it.

1
The first signal
Size, which is read before anything else
Price sets the register faster than the product does. Under ₹1,000 with no occasion attached, a gift reads as a passing thought - you saw something, you sent it, the transaction is complete. Above that, and particularly once a gift is obviously a set, it starts to look like it is marking something, and the person receiving it has to work out what is being marked. That is where the awkwardness comes from: not the object, the arithmetic.

So the practical band is ₹379 to ₹1,000: attars at ₹379 to ₹399 in 3ml, candles at ₹399, car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549, reed diffusers at ₹749 to ₹849 in 50ml, Woodenwick candles at ₹999. Above it sit the two-candle duos at ₹699, the reed duo sets at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 and the Attar Trio at ₹1,055 - all good gifts, all of them reading as occasions. Send those for a housewarming, not to say you were thinking of somebody.
Tip: A set says occasion. A single says passing thought. Send the single.
2
The second signal
Room or body - the distance from skin
This is the signal people underestimate. Home fragrance is chosen for a space and a space cannot be flattered; personal fragrance is chosen for a person, and choosing how somebody smells is a closer thing to have done. Neither is wrong, but they sit in different registers and they are read differently.

The clearly friendly end is room fragrance: a candle, a reed diffuser, wax melts if they own a ₹599 ceramic burner, car fragrance. The warmer end is a worn attar, which is perfectly fine for an old friend whose taste you know and slightly forward in a friendship where you would have to guess. Past that sits anything for the body, and that is where to stop. The SOSA body massage candle at ₹699 is a body product, not a room candle - it is the single clearest example on the site of a thing that will be read as romantic, and it should not go to a friend under any framing. Solid body perfumes at ₹469 to ₹549 sit in the same territory. If it goes on skin, it is the wrong gift for this page.
3
The third signal
Time of day, and what a scent is coded to
Scents carry conventions whether or not anybody agrees with them, and those conventions are what a recipient reads. A heavy rose, a night-blooming jasmine, an oud - Ameeri, Mastani, Nawaab, the Garden Bloom reed at ₹799 - are beautiful and they are coded to evenings by long habit. A lemon and mint, a pine and cedar, a coffee and vanilla, a bookshop are coded to daytime and to ordinary rooms. Nothing here is about what a scent does to anybody; it is about what the convention says, and conventions are what get misread.

The shape of the gift carries the same code. Two candles together look like an evening. One candle looks like a candle. Anything sold as a set for a night at home reads as that, however you describe it in the message. Morning Freshness at ₹749 in Malabar lemon and mint is the least ambiguous thing in the SOSA range for this purpose, with Mountain Breeze at ₹849 in pine, sage and cedar close behind. And if the true answer is that you want it read as romantic, this is the wrong page for that - saying so plainly will always work better than a gift chosen to do the saying for you.
Tip: Daylight scents, single objects, plain prices. That is the whole register.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, Rs 399
The smallest thing that still reads as a gift
A candle at ₹399 asks nothing of the person receiving it
Hand-poured in small batches. Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. A candle is a scent and an object to light - it is not a treatment and it will not change how a week went.
See the SOSA candles →
Work it out in this order
How to keep the register where you want it
  1. Buy for the room. Nothing that goes on skin, and no body products.
  2. Stay under Rs 1,000, and send a single rather than a set or a duo.
  3. Pick a daytime scent: lemon and mint, pine and cedar, coffee, bookshop.
  4. Say the reason in one plain line. A gift you must explain is the wrong gift.
The SOSA principle
A gift is read in about a second, and what gets read first is size, then how close to the body it sits, then what time of day it belongs to. Set those three and the message looks after itself.
Which is why a Rs 749 reed diffuser in lemon and mint is a safer friendship gift than a Rs 379 attar, despite costing twice as much.

What stays clearly friendly, and what does not

Sorted by register rather than by price, the range reads like this. Clearly friendly: car fragrance from ₹449 in nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price; a single candle at ₹399 in Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks, about 15 to 18 hours; a 50ml reed diffuser, with Morning Freshness at ₹749 in Malabar lemon and mint and Mountain Breeze at ₹849 in pine, sage and cedar the most neutral of the five, running about 6 to 10 weeks; wax melts at ₹499 if and only if they own a ₹599 ceramic burner. Warmer, and fine between old friends: a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, and the Garden Bloom reed at ₹799 in British rose and night jasmine. Wrong register for a friendship, plainly: the SOSA body massage candle at ₹699, which is a body product rather than home fragrance, the solid body perfumes at ₹469 to ₹549, and anything else applied to skin. Note also that Evening Calm is the name on a reed diffuser at ₹799, describing lavender and chamomile, and nothing more than that.

The SOSA gift edit
Four gifts, sorted by how they get read
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Car fragrance · ₹449 to ₹549 The most unambiguous gift SOSA makes. It is equipment for a car, it is useful, and no one has ever received one and wondered what it meant. Nine scents in hanging and spray formats at the same price. It fails if they do not drive, and it fails when you want the gift to look chosen rather than practical.
A single candle · ₹399 Safely friendly as a single at ₹399 and about 15 to 18 hours. The thing to watch is the shape: the ₹699 two-candle duo is the same product in a register that reads as an evening for two. Pick a daytime scent - Bookshop or Misty Mornings rather than something heavy - and send one, not a pair.
A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 Bought for a room, asks nothing of anybody, runs about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness in lemon and mint is the cleanest register in the range. It costs more than an attar and still reads cooler, which is the whole point. It fails only on price if you wanted to keep the gesture very small.
A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 The one to think about. It is small and cheap, but it is worn on the body and chosen for how a person smells, which reads warmer than its price suggests. Excellent for an old friend whose taste you can name. Forward in a newer friendship, and the wrong choice if you are already worried about how the gift will land.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The gift that asks for nothing at all
A reed diffuser needs no flame, no socket and nothing remembered
Five scents in 50ml from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar, Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and vanilla. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what it smells of, not a claim about what it does.
See the reed diffusers →

Two closing notes on what to avoid. First, do not solve a register problem with wrapping - ribbon, a box, a ceremony. SOSA offers none of that in any case, and the only thing that changes how a gift reads is the gift. Second, do not send nothing simply because you are worried. If every object feels loaded, the plain line on its own - saw this, thought of you, no reason - is still available and still worth sending. And if what you actually want is for it to be read as more than friendly, say that instead. A gift is a poor way to ask a question, because the person receiving it has to answer one they were not asked.

SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
Hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or about 30 to 36 hours in the two-candle duo. The smallest gift here that still looks like a gift.
₹399 · duo ₹699
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot and jasmine sambac, from Rs 379
Alcohol-free oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - and the 3ml is the right one here.
from ₹379 · 3ml
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
Malabar lemon and mint, 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks. Nothing to plug in, switch off or remember - which matters when somebody has nothing spare to give a new object.
₹749 · 50ml
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

One message, one honest recommendation
Tell SOSA who the person is to you, whether their home is already scented, whether they drive and what you want to spend - and you will be told which one to send, including the times the honest answer is the cheaper one or a phone call instead of a parcel.

People ask me which scent says friendship. None of them do. What says friendship is a single object, a plain price, and one honest line about why you sent it - the scent is just what is inside.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by how small it can be while still being specific - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA scented candles Hand-poured, small batches Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time; duos at about 30 to 36 hours from ₹399
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear from ₹1,055
SOSA wax melts Flameless, needs a burner Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too from ₹499
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion from ₹1,498

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

What SOSA publishes, and what SOSA does not
Everything below is on the live product pages. Anything not on this list is not something a gifting page should state.
  • Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
  • Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
  • Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
  • Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.

A note from Sonal

The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.

What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.

So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a fragrance gift seem romantic?
Four things: the size, whether it is worn on the body, whether the scent or the shape is coded to evenings, and whether it goes on skin. A Rs 699 two-candle duo reads differently from a single Rs 399 candle. A worn attar reads warmer than a reed diffuser. Anything applied to the body reads warmest of all, whatever the intention.
What is a good non-romantic gift to say I am thinking of you?
A single candle at Rs 399 in a daytime scent, a Morning Freshness reed diffuser at Rs 749 in Malabar lemon and mint, or car fragrance from Rs 449 if they drive. All three are bought for a space rather than a person, all three sit under Rs 1,000, and none of them needs explaining afterwards.
Is the SOSA body massage candle a good gift for a friend?
No. It is a body massage candle at Rs 699 rather than a room candle, and between the word massage and the fact that it is applied to skin it reads as romantic no matter how it is framed. If you want a candle for a friend, send a scented jar candle at Rs 399 instead. The same applies to solid body perfumes.
Can I send perfume to a friend without it being weird?
Yes, if you already know what they wear and can name it. A 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399 between old friends is normal and welcome. In a newer friendship it is a warmer choice than it looks, because you have picked something for how a person smells. When in doubt, buy for their home instead - a room has no opinion about being chosen for.
How much should I spend so it does not look like a big deal?
Under Rs 1,000, and send a single rather than a set. Rs 379 to Rs 399 for a 3ml attar, Rs 399 for a candle, Rs 449 to Rs 549 for car fragrance, Rs 749 to Rs 849 for a 50ml reed diffuser. Duos at Rs 699 and reed sets from Rs 1,498 are good gifts, but they read as occasions rather than as passing thoughts.

Take the next step
Buy for the room, stay under a thousand, send one plain line
A reed diffuser at ₹749 in Malabar lemon and mint, a single candle at ₹399, or car fragrance from ₹449 if they drive - all bought for a space rather than a person. Skip anything applied to skin, including the ₹699 body massage candle, and skip the duos and sets, which read as occasions. Then say in one sentence what made you think of them.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
A small thing, sent because you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you
SOSA — hand-poured candles and alcohol-free fragrance, made in India, and never sold to you as a fix for anybody's week
Hand-poured candles from ₹399, reed diffusers from ₹749 in 50ml lasting about 6 to 10 weeks, car fragrance from ₹449 in hanging and spray formats, and alcohol-free attars from ₹379 in 3ml. All made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent and does not remove, neutralise or purify odour, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial, air-purifying or wellbeing claim. No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
