Founder Diaries · Thinking-of-You & Cheer-Up Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated September 2026
The mistake in almost every guide to this is treating living away from home as one situation. It is at least four, and the right gift in week one is the wrong gift in month eight. Somebody still living out of boxes cannot use a reed diffuser; somebody two years into a settled flat has no use for another small thing to put down. Work out which week they are actually in, and the choice is nearly made for you - and the budget stays where it belongs, which on this page is ₹379 to ₹1,000.
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser, British rose and night jasmine, Rs 799
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser · British rose and night jasmine ₹799 →
The gift for stage two, not stage one. Garden Bloom, 50ml, ₹799 - British rose and night jasmine, about 6 to 10 weeks, no flame and no socket. It belongs in a room that has stopped being a pile of boxes, which is usually somewhere between week three and month four. Send it before that and it waits in a cupboard for the shelf to exist.
Quick answers — read this first
What is a good gift for someone who has just moved out? It depends entirely on how long ago. In the first week, when everything is in boxes, send nothing that needs a surface - a 3ml attar at ₹379 or a candle at ₹399. Once there is a room that looks like a room, a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 makes sense. Those two stages want different things.

What should I not send? Anything that needs unboxing, assembling, plugging in or learning, especially in the first month. Anything large, because a big parcel arriving at a half-furnished flat becomes a storage problem. And wax melts on their own at ₹499, because they need a ₹599 ceramic burner to be usable - they are a component unless the person already owns one.

How much should I spend? ₹379 to ₹1,000 covers nearly all of this. The one defensible exception is somebody who genuinely travels most weeks for work, where the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 answers a real pattern in their diary. For everybody else, a larger gift is an object somebody has to find a place for in a flat that does not have places yet.
The short answer
Short answer: Sort by stage. Week one of boxes: a 3ml attar at Rs 379 or a candle at Rs 399, nothing that needs a surface. First months in a room: a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849. A settled flat: the 130ml at Rs 1,249 or a duo set. Constant travel: car fragrance at Rs 449, or SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 if they are genuinely away most weeks.
The pick: For most people asking: a candle at ₹399 early on, then a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 once there is a room to put it in.
Why: Both are small, neither needs setting up, and each matches a specific stage rather than a general idea of somebody having moved out.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
What should I gift someone who has just started living away from home?
Ask how long ago, because the answer changes completely. Still in boxes, send nothing that needs a surface or a decision: a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 goes in a bag, or a candle at ₹399 lives anywhere. First months, in a room that is now a room, a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 asks nothing at all of them - no flame, no socket - and runs about 6 to 10 weeks. A settled flat can take the 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 or a reed duo set from ₹1,498 if there is a real occasion, though on an ordinary week the smaller one still reads better. Somebody travelling constantly is a different problem again: car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549 if there is one car, and the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 only if they are genuinely away most weeks. Two things not to send at any stage: anything with a setup step, and wax melts at ₹499 without the ₹599 burner. And check the flame rule before any candle - rented rooms and hostels often forbid them. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One question does most of the work here: does their flat have surfaces yet? If the answer is no, everything that sits on a surface is premature.
The two that cover most of this: a candle at ₹399 early on, a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 once there is a room to put it in.
SOSA candles from ₹399

The four stages of living away, and what each one actually needs

Four stages, and they are genuinely different problems rather than four price points for the same one. Find the person you are buying for in the list, and read the constraint before you read the product.

1
Stage one
The first week: boxes, and no surfaces
Somebody in their first week away has a flat full of cardboard, a list of things that do not work yet, and no idea where anything is. The constraint is that there is nowhere to put anything, and every object you send is one more item in a room already at capacity. This is the stage at which well-meant housewarming gifts go into a cupboard and stay there.

So send something with no footprint. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 is alcohol-free oil in a small roll-on that lives in a bag, and it needs no space at all. A candle at ₹399 is the other good answer, because it can sit anywhere and gets used up rather than kept. Avoid the reed diffuser at this stage, not because it is wrong but because it is early - it wants a surface that exists in a month's time. And avoid anything that turns up in a large box, which at this stage is a chore wearing wrapping paper.
Tip: Week one: nothing with a footprint. An attar at ₹379 or a candle at ₹399.
2
Stage two
The first months: a room that is now a room
Somewhere between week three and month four the boxes go and the flat becomes a set of rooms somebody lives in. This is the stage a reed diffuser is actually for. A 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849 sits on a shelf and works with no flame, no socket and nothing to remember, running about 6 to 10 weeks - which matters, because somebody four weeks into a move is still dealing with a great deal of admin and does not need another thing to operate.

Pick the quiet one if you have not seen the flat. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint at ₹749 and is the least declarative of the five; Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine at ₹799; Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar and Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla, both ₹849; Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile at ₹799, which is the name on the bottle and what it smells of rather than a claim about what it does. Worth saying once and plainly: a reed diffuser does not make a new flat feel like home. A room that smells of something chosen rather than of nothing is a small, real difference, and that is the whole of it.
3
Stage three
A settled flat, and the one who travels constantly
A settled flat, two years in, is the only stage where a larger home gift makes sense - the 130ml reed at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 for a big or open-plan room, or a reed duo set from ₹1,498 if there is a genuine occasion for it. On an ordinary week, though, the smaller thing still lands better, and a ₹399 candle sent for no reason says something a ₹1,598 set sent for no reason does not.

Somebody who travels constantly is not a home-fragrance problem at all. If there is one car they drive daily, car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549 is the correct product, in a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price, with a discovery set of three minis at ₹699 to ₹799 if you do not know what they like in a confined space. The SOSA Safar at ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios, is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion car and travel perfume diffuser, and it is defensible only when somebody is genuinely away most weeks with no fixed car. No runtime, coverage or refill frequency is published for it, so do not accept a number from anybody.
Tip: Settled flat: still go smaller than you think. Constant travel: buy for the car, not the flat.
SOSA Cozy Corner scented candle, Rs 399
The smallest thing that still reads as a gift
A candle at ₹399 asks nothing of the person receiving it
Hand-poured in small batches. Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks are ₹399 each at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, and ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. The Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla are ₹999. A candle is a scent and an object to light - it is not a treatment and it will not change how a week went.

Work it out in this order
How to pick in the right order
  1. Ask how long ago they moved. That answer decides more than the budget does.
  2. Boxes still up? An attar at Rs 379 or a candle at Rs 399. Nothing bulky.
  3. Room now a room? A 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849, about 6 to 10 weeks.
  4. Check the flame rule, then send your own message separately. No card is enclosed.
The SOSA principle
Living away from home is not one situation and it does not have one gift. The useful question is never what they like - it is what their flat can currently absorb.
A gift that has nowhere to go is a chore, however well chosen, and that is the commonest way this goes wrong.

The range, sorted by the stage the person is in

Sorted by stage, the range is short. Week one: 3ml attars at ₹379 to ₹399 - Adaa is bergamot with green cardamom and jasmine sambac, Ameeri is Taif rose with sandalwood and saffron, Nawaab is white oud with Mysore sandalwood, Mastani is night-blooming jasmine with damask rose - or a candle at ₹399, about 15 to 18 hours, ₹699 for a two-candle duo at about 30 to 36 hours. First months: reed diffusers at ₹749 to ₹849 in 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks, with 300ml refills at ₹2,399 and 500ml at ₹3,499. Settled flat: 130ml reeds at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349, Woodenwick candles at ₹999, duo sets from ₹1,498. Constant travel: car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549 in hanging or spray, combos at ₹899 to ₹949, and Safar at ₹3,999 for the narrow case that justifies it.

The SOSA gift edit
The four stages, and the honest move for each
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Week one, boxes everywhere · ₹379 to ₹399 A 3ml attar or a single candle, and nothing else. There are no surfaces and no spare attention, so the only sensible gift is one with no footprint. It fails if you send anything that needs a place, a plug or an hour - at this stage that is not generosity, it is another task on a list that is already long.
The first months, in a room · ₹749 to ₹849 A 50ml reed diffuser: no flame, no socket, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks. The best match on this page between a real stage and a real product. It fails in two months unless somebody buys a ₹2,399 refill, so decide in advance whether that is coming from you.
A settled flat, two years in · ₹999 to ₹1,598 The 130ml reed for a large room, a Woodenwick candle at ₹999, or a duo set from ₹1,498 where there is a genuine occasion. It fails on an ordinary week with no occasion attached, when a ₹399 candle sent for no reason at all says something the expensive set does not.
Away most weeks for work · ₹449 to ₹3,999 Car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549 for one car driven daily, or SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 where there is no fixed car and the travel is genuinely constant. It fails for occasional travellers, where ₹3,999 is a guess with a price tag, and it fails for anybody having a hard time, at any budget.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The gift that asks for nothing at all
A reed diffuser needs no flame, no socket and nothing remembered
Five scents in 50ml from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, running about 6 to 10 weeks. Morning Freshness is Malabar lemon and mint, Garden Bloom is British rose and night jasmine, Mountain Breeze is pine, sage and cedar, Fresh Brew is Coorg coffee and vanilla. Evening Calm is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what it smells of, not a claim about what it does.
See the reed diffusers →

Two traps worth naming before you order, because both catch people on exactly these pages. Wax melts at ₹499 look like a neat flameless answer for a rented room, but they need a ceramic burner at ₹599 to work at all - on their own they are a component, not a gift, unless the person already owns one. And the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is not a cheap gift either; it is water-based fuel for an ultrasonic machine like Boond at ₹899, and it never goes into a Safar or a Vaayu, which take waterless nebuliser oil at ₹1,049 for 100gm. Three different fluids, none interchangeable. Finally, and whichever stage they are in: SOSA encloses no printed card and has no note service, so the message goes separately and in your own words.

SOSA Bookshop scented candle, hand-poured, Rs 399
Hand-poured in small batches, about 15 to 18 hours of burn time, or about 30 to 36 hours in the two-candle duo. The smallest gift here that still looks like a gift.
₹399 · duo ₹699
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot and jasmine sambac, from Rs 379
Alcohol-free oil rolled onto the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - and the 3ml is the right one here.
from ₹379 · 3ml
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
Malabar lemon and mint, 50ml, about 6 to 10 weeks. Nothing to plug in, switch off or remember - which matters when somebody has nothing spare to give a new object.
₹749 · 50ml
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The question people ask me is what somebody living away from home would like. The question that actually answers it is where their things are. A flat still in boxes cannot receive a gift that needs a shelf, however thoughtful the shelf gift is.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every one of these, and neither is about price. First: how much energy does this ask of them? A candle is lit and that is the whole interaction; a reed diffuser asks nothing at all; a machine asks to be filled, plugged in and remembered, which is the wrong thing to hand somebody who is already running on empty. Second: can you name something they already like? If yes, an attar is accurate. If no, buy for the room instead, because a room has no opinion and a person does. Then keep the number low - on a hard week the size of a gift is a demand, not a kindness.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by how small it can be while still being specific - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA scented candles Hand-poured, small batches Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at about 15 to 18 hours of burn time; duos at about 30 to 36 hours from ₹399
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - for when you cannot name a scent they wear from ₹1,055
SOSA wax melts Flameless, needs a burner Scented wax for a ceramic or electric burner - only for somebody who already owns one, or buy the burner too from ₹499
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the larger home gift, for a real occasion from ₹1,498

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The honest price sheet
What SOSA publishes, and what SOSA does not
Everything below is on the live product pages. Anything not on this list is not something a gifting page should state.
  • Attars - Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179 and Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199 in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. The Attar Trio is ₹1,055, ₹1,859 or ₹3,189.
  • Reed diffusers - Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew ₹849 in 50ml; 130ml from ₹1,249. They last about 6 to 10 weeks. Duo sets from ₹1,498.
  • Car fragrance - nine scents from ₹449 to ₹549, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price, with 50ml sprays at ₹1,499 and saver combos at ₹899 to ₹949. Safar is ₹3,999, or ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios.
  • Candles and wax melts - Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks at ₹399 for approximately 15 to 18 hours, or ₹699 for a two-candle duo at approximately 30 to 36 hours. Woodenwick candles in jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla ₹999. Bubble Candles ₹499 unscented and ₹599 scented. Wax melts from ₹499, which need a ceramic burner at ₹599 - so they are only a complete gift for somebody who already owns one.
  • Not published, and therefore never stated here: how long any fragrance will be liked, delivery or dispatch timing, any festive discount, any minimum order quantity or bulk rate, and any claim about what a person will feel on receiving a gift. Those questions go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

A note from Sonal

The messages that stay with me are not the festive ones. They are the ones that start my friend is having an awful time and I do not know what to do. People write that at eleven at night, and what they are really asking is whether there is an object that will help. I have been doing this long enough to answer it honestly: there is not. A fragrance is a scent. It will not fix a week, it will not undo a rejection, and anybody selling it to you as comfort is selling you something else.

What a small parcel does do is carry one piece of information, and it is not a small one: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. No birthday, no festival, nothing on a calendar. Somebody stopped in the middle of their own week and thought about yours. That is worth sending, and it is the entire reason this category exists.

So the practical advice runs the other way from what people expect. Go smaller. A large gift arrives at somebody who is already short of energy and asks them to produce a reaction - gratitude, surprise, a phone call they have to be bright on. A ₹399 candle or a ₹379 attar asks for none of that. And send the words yourself, separately: we put no printed card in the parcel, and even if we did, a sentence from you naming the actual thing they are dealing with does more than anything we could print. If you are choosing between the bigger gift and making the call, make the call. The gift goes alongside that, never instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gift for someone who has just moved out of home?
In the first week, a 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399 or a candle at Rs 399 - something with no footprint, because there are no surfaces yet. Once the boxes are gone and the room is a room, a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 is the better answer, since it needs nothing from them at all.
Is a reed diffuser a good moving-in gift?
It is a good gift for the second stage rather than the first. A reed diffuser wants a surface and a settled room, so it works from about a month in. Sent into a flat still full of boxes it is early, not wrong. The 50ml runs about 6 to 10 weeks, with refills sold separately at Rs 2,399 for 300ml.
What should I get someone who is away travelling most of the time?
Buy for the car or the bag rather than the flat. Car fragrance at Rs 449 to Rs 549 if they drive the same car daily, or a discovery set of three minis at Rs 699 to Rs 799 if you do not know their taste. SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 is defensible only when somebody is genuinely away most weeks with no fixed car.
Are wax melts a good gift for a rented room where candles are banned?
Only if the person already owns a burner. Wax melts are Rs 499 and need a ceramic burner at Rs 599 to be usable at all, so on their own they are a component rather than a gift. Where a flame is not permitted, a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 is the simpler answer, or send the melts and the burner together.
How much should I spend on someone starting out on their own?
Rs 379 to Rs 1,000 is the honest band for nearly all of this. A large parcel arriving at a half-furnished flat becomes a storage problem rather than a pleasure, and the person then has to be delighted about it on the phone. The single exception is somebody genuinely on the road most weeks.
SOSA fragrance gift
Take the next step
Buy for the week they are in, not the move in general
Boxes still up: a 3ml attar at ₹379 or a candle at ₹399. A room that is now a room: a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849. A settled flat: the 130ml at ₹1,249 or a duo from ₹1,498, occasion permitting. Away most weeks: car fragrance at ₹449, or Safar at ₹3,999 if the travel is genuinely constant. Then send the message yourself.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.

Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent and does not remove, neutralise or purify odour, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial, air-purifying or wellbeing claim. No claim is made about how any recipient will feel about a gift. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep, comfort or wellbeing: fragrance is a scent, not a treatment, and where a product name contains a word such as Calm that is a name and not an effect. Where this guide covers sending something to a person having a difficult time, it treats a gift as a gesture of attention alongside real support and never as a substitute for a person or for professional help, and it gives no mental-health advice. No delivery date, dispatch time, order cut-off, discount or minimum order quantity is stated anywhere on this page; corporate and bulk enquiries are answered on WhatsApp. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand; the SOSA perfumes are SOSA's own compositions and are not the designer fragrances they are described as being inspired by.
