Across a hundred questions about which fragrance goes where, the same short answer keeps appearing: match the register to how long people stay, set it lower than instinct, and leave four rooms alone entirely.
Quick answers — read this first
Which fragrance goes in which room? Entrance three drops of a light register, living room four of something with a base, bedroom three of the quietest, dining three switched off as food arrives, guest room two before arrival, home office three and dry. Kitchen, puja room, balcony and children's rooms get nothing.
Should the whole house use one scent? One family, varied by intensity rather than character. A house that changes register between rooms reads as a set of unrelated decisions; one that changes only in strength reads as a single idea.
Which rooms should not be scented? Four. The kitchen, because cooking smell is extraction and cleaning. A puja room, because the traditional materials already do it. A balcony, because open air disperses everything. And children's own rooms, where there is no benefit.
The short answer
Short answer: room by room: entrance three drops of a light register, living room four with a base, bedroom three of the quietest before bed, dining three switched off as food arrives, guest room two before arrival, home office three and dry, wardrobe near zero. Four rooms get nothing: kitchen, puja room, balcony and children's own rooms. One scent family throughout, varied by intensity. Bottles from Rs 299 for 15ml.
The pick: the Day & Night reed duo (₹1,498) as the whole-home start, or single signatures from ₹749.
Shop: SOSA reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection scenting range.
A home's fragrance is a system, not a product: honest air beneath, one scent family expressed room by room, occasions layered on top, and consistency held for years. That is what guests experience as "your home always smells incredible" - and what the household experiences as home.
The whole house, in order of the walk. 1. Entrance. Three drops of the Ritz-Carlton-inspired Quiet Luxury in a Boond (₹799). Three seconds, a fresh nose, so lower than instinct. 2. Living room. Four drops of the Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome or the same house register, in a Sukoon (₹1,799) or a Megh (₹3,499) for open plan. Judged at hour two. 3. Dining. Three drops of something dry, switched off as the food arrives. 4. Bedroom. Three drops of the Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity, twenty minutes before bed, then off. 5. Guest room. Two drops before they arrive, then off, because they cannot ask you to stop. 6. Home office. Three drops of something dry, after airing the room, with no claims attached. 7. Bathroom. Extraction and drains first, then three drops, or reeds if ventilation is poor. 8. Wardrobe. Near zero, and nothing running while you dress. And the four that get nothing: the kitchen (extraction), the puja room (already answered by tradition), the balcony (open air), and children's own rooms. Bottles from ₹299 for 15ml in the collection; use one family throughout, varied by intensity. Monsoon belongs to reeds. SOSA's own interpretations; not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: entrance 3, living room 4, dining 3 then off, bedroom 3 then off, guest room 2, office 3, wardrobe near zero. Kitchen, puja room, balcony and children's rooms get nothing.
The whole-home start most households choose: the Day & Night duo - Morning Freshness for the day's bright spaces and Evening Calm for the bedroom - at ₹1,498, flame-free and plug-free. Add a mist diffuser with the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) for hosting hours.

Every room, and the four that need nothing
Every room, and the four exceptions.
Why this works
The house in one view
Start where most households start: the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 - or a single signature reed from ₹749.
The dose table across a whole house looks like a list of arbitrary numbers and it is actually one principle applied repeatedly: the longer somebody stays in a room, the lower the register should be. A hallway is three seconds and can be clear. A living room is three hours and must be comfortable at the end of them. A bedroom is eight hours of sleep and gets the quietest setting in the house before being switched off. A room somebody works in all day belongs to them rather than to you. Learn the principle and the numbers stop needing to be remembered.
Tip: the longer somebody stays, the lower it goes. Every number in the table is that one rule.
2
One family, varied by strength
That is what makes a house cohere
A guest does not experience rooms as separate impressions, they experience a walk. So the house should change in intensity rather than in character: the same register or a close relative at the door, in the living room and in the bedrooms, fuller where people gather and quieter where they sleep. Two unrelated registers meet in corridors and on staircases and blend into something nobody chose, which is why an open stairwell or a compact flat can only really hold one scent. Choosing a house register first, and treating any second bottle as a relative rather than a rival, is the whole strategy.
3
The four rooms that get nothing
And the limits behind them
A kitchen is not a fragrance job, because cooking smell is aerosolised oil settling on soft furnishings elsewhere, and the answers are extraction, a closed door, open windows and washed textiles. A puja room already has a relationship with fragrance older than any brand, and the useful advice there is ventilation, upkeep and never leaving a flame unattended. A balcony has no enclosed volume for a mist to build in, and plants do that job properly. And children's own rooms gain nothing from being scented. Beyond those, three general limits hold everywhere: fragrance never removes a smell, light registers fade by construction, and monsoon belongs to reeds.
Tip: four rooms get nothing, and saying which ones is more useful than another product recommendation.
The SOSA principle
The longer somebody stays in a room, the lower the register should be. Every number in the table is that one rule.
Learn the principle and you stop needing the table.

The SOSA whole-home edit
Whichever transformation you are building toward, every SOSA product here is alcohol-free and made in small batches in India. Reeds run flame-free and plug-free in any room; the ultrasonic mist diffusers carry the Hotel Collection through living spaces and hosting hours; and the Vaayu machine holds large open homes on a schedule. One family, room by room - and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full edit.
The SOSA whole-home edit
One family, every room - essential to luxury, matched to how you live
A note on the two systems: SOSA reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - no flame, plug or water, safe in any room including nurseries' adjacent spaces at gentle placement. The Hotel Collection is a separate water-based fragrance for ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - not reed oil, and not interchangeable. Fragrance crowns a cared-for home; it does not substitute for ventilation and cleaning. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
Nobody actually buys a diffuser. In ten years of making fragrance I have never once met a customer who wanted a bottle with sticks in it. What they want is the moment someone walks into their home, pauses, and says "wow - it smells incredible in here." They want their children to grow up with a smell that will mean home for the rest of their lives. They want the house to feel finished.
That is why I compose scents the way I do - not as products but as the missing layer of a home: the fresh note at the door that says this house is kept, the warm one in the living room that says you are welcome, the lavender in the bedroom that says the day is over. One family of scents, held for years, becomes something no decor budget can buy: identity.
Everything here is alcohol-free, flame-free where it matters, and made in small batches in India. And a part of every order supports girl-child education - because a home's best fragrance is what it gives back.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the home-care and buying advice applies to any brand.
Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory signals reach the brain's emotion and memory centres (amygdala, hippocampus) ahead of conscious processing, which is why scents trigger emotional responses and autobiographical memories with unusual speed and durability; a home's ambient scent influences mood, comfort and social judgments at moderate, replicated effect sizes, with gentle intensities outperforming strong ones and no fragrance effect surviving unmanaged odour sources. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free fragrance oil with natural rattan reeds (no flame, electricity or water), from ₹749, lasting roughly 6-10 weeks per fill; refills from ₹2,399. SOSA ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - Boond (300ml, ₹799), Sukoon (500ml, ₹1,799), Megh (6L, ₹3,499) - use a separate water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299); this is not reed diffuser oil. SOSA Vaayu is a waterless cold-air machine with Bluetooth app and timer, ~1000m³ coverage, ₹11,999. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Cruelty-free, vegan, made in India.
