There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. What is the quickest honest way to size my own house?
Five minutes with a measuring tape and a phone. Walk from your front door to the dining table and note every door you had to open; everything you passed through freely is your connected volume. Add up that floor area only, multiply by your ceiling height in feet for cubic feet, divide by 35.3 for cubic metres, and count any double-height part at its real height rather than the house average. Compare the result to approximately 1000 cubic metres, which is what the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated for, and you will almost certainly find you are well inside it. Then count the rooms you excluded, because each one needs a reed from Rs 749 or a Boond at Rs 899 of its own. Does a bigger coverage rating mean a stronger smell in my house?
No, and this is the misunderstanding that ruins the most homes. Coverage and intensity are different things: a machine rated for a larger volume is built to hold a gentle even level across a big space, not to make a small space smell stronger. Running any machine hard in a room that does not need it is how you get a headache at the dinner table and a family that resents the whole idea. Buy for the volume, then set the intensity to the lowest level that survives someone walking in from outside, and leave it there. This matters more at home than anywhere else, because a household includes children, elderly parents, pregnant family members and pets who breathe this air for hours rather than passing through it, and because you will be nose-blind to your own house within days of installing anything.
How much does the whole house cost once the closed rooms are included?
It adds up from published prices, and it is less than most people assume. The connected volume takes one Vaayu at Rs 11,999, and because four hotel-inspired waterless blends come in the box there is nothing further to buy to start. Reeds are Rs 749 for Morning Freshness, Rs 799 for Garden Bloom or Evening Calm and Rs 849 for Mountain Breeze or Fresh Brew, so three bedrooms is Rs 2,247 and a house comes to Rs 14,246; four is Rs 2,996 and Rs 14,995; five rooms including bathrooms is Rs 3,745 and Rs 15,744. Swap any room to a Boond at Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection at Rs 299 and that room is Rs 1,198. At what size does a Vaayu stop being the right answer?
In two situations rather than at one number. The first is when your connected volume genuinely exceeds approximately 1000 cubic metres - which at a 10 ft ceiling means more than roughly 3,500 sq ft of space with no doors between its parts, or less than that if your ceilings are tall. The second, and far more common, is when the actual requirement is every room scented regardless of whether doors are open, which no standalone machine at any price can do. Both point to the same place: the ducted Aangan at Rs 25,999, which nebulises into central air-conditioning ductwork and reaches approximately 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft including upper floors, or Meenar at Rs 38,500 for approximately 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft. Both require central air-conditioning rather than split units. Without ducts, the honest answer stays one machine on the shared air plus a reed behind each door.
Do I measure the whole plot or just the built-up area I live in?
Only the enclosed air you actually intend to scent, which is usually much less than any figure on your paperwork. Ignore the plot, ignore terraces, balconies, verandas and any covered outdoor area, because open air disperses fragrance faster than any machine can add it and scenting outdoors is not something we would recommend spending on. Ignore garages, stores, utility areas and staircases enclosed behind a door. Then, from the built-up area that remains, subtract every room whose door is normally shut. What is left - typically a third to a half of the built-up figure - is your connected living volume, and it is the only number that should ever be compared to a machine's coverage rating. If that sounds like a lot of subtracting, it is: it is also why most villas need one machine rather than three.
