There are two respectable philosophies of home fragrance and they point in opposite directions. One says a house should smell of one thing for years until the scent stops being a product and becomes an address — the thing your children will recognise in thirty years' time. The other says a nose adapts to any constant within minutes, so the only way to keep noticing your own home is to change it with the seasons. Both are correct. They simply belong to different households, and they cost strikingly different amounts of money.
Quick answers — read this first
The signature route is the cheap one: a 500ml refill at ₹3,499 covers roughly 14–18 months of one scent, about ₹7 per ml (₹3,499 ÷ 500).

The rotation route is a bottle habit: four 130ml bottles across a year is 4 × ₹1,299 = ₹5,196 for 520ml, which is ₹5,196 ÷ 520 ≈ ₹10 per ml.

What the extra buys: four fresh sets of six fibre reeds, four vessels' worth of variety, and no changeover work — because reeds are not sold separately, rotation solves the reed-supply problem by accident.

The trap: changing scent because you have stopped noticing it. You adapt to a constant hardest at home. Ask a guest before you buy anything.
The short answer
Short answer: stay with the scent if you still like it when you walk in from outside, and rotate if the pleasure of a new fragrance is worth roughly ₹1,700 a year to you. Those are honestly the two considerations. A refill in the same scent is the cheapest way to keep a home scented; a new fragrance is a bottle purchase, because a scent change needs fresh reeds and reeds only arrive with bottles.
The mechanism you should not confuse with boredom: your nose stops reporting a constant within minutes, and it adapts hardest in your own home where the smell is always present. Most people who write to say they have tired of a fragrance have not tired of it — they have stopped receiving it. Step outside for fifteen minutes and walk back in. If it is there on the doorstep, the fragrance is working and the change would be for pleasure rather than repair.
Shop: staying put — oil refills ₹2,399 for 300ml and ₹3,499 for 500ml, oil only. Rotating — 50ml bottles from ₹749 and 130ml from ₹1,249, each with six fresh fibre reeds, or a duo set from ₹1,548 to run two at once. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Should I switch fragrance when my reed diffuser needs refilling?
1. First establish whether you have actually tired of it. Leave the house for fifteen minutes and come back in. If the fragrance greets you at the door, nothing is wrong with it — you have simply adapted, which is what noses do to constants. A guest is a better witness than you are in your own home.

2. If you still like it on the doorstep, refill and save the money. The same scent in the same vessel is the cheapest arrangement we sell: ₹2,399 for 300ml, about ₹8 per ml, or ₹3,499 for 500ml, about ₹7 per ml, against ₹15–₹17 per ml for a 50ml bottle.

3. If you want a change, understand it is a bottle purchase. A new fragrance needs new reeds — the old set holds the old composition in the fibre — and reeds are not sold separately at SOSA. So rotation runs through bottles from ₹749, not through the ₹2,399 refill.

4. Price a year honestly before you commit to rotating. Four 130ml bottles at ₹1,299 is 4 × ₹1,299 = ₹5,196 for 520ml of oil. A 500ml refill in one scent is ₹3,499. The difference, roughly ₹1,700, is what variety costs — and it buys four fresh reed sets you would otherwise have to plan for.

5. Consider rotating by room instead of by season. Two vessels, two scents, no washing and no ghosting. If the rooms are connected, choose a pair that shares a note — Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus; Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth.

6. Do not rotate a bedroom for the sake of it. Sleep associations are built by repetition. Evening Calm works partly because your brain has learned it means night; changing it quarterly throws that away.

Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: refill the same scent if it still greets you at the door — it is the cheapest oil we sell at roughly ₹7–₹8 per ml. Rotate if variety is worth about ₹1,700 a year to you, remembering that a new fragrance is a bottle purchase (₹749 up) because reeds are not sold separately. Most homes settle on a signature downstairs and a changing scent elsewhere.
SOSA Evening Calm Kashmir lavender and chamomile reed diffuser
The scent I would never rotate
SOSA Evening Calm · Kashmir lavender & chamomile ₹799 / 50ml
A bedroom fragrance earns its value through repetition. The reason Evening Calm settles a room is partly the composition — Kashmir lavender over chamomile, the softest thing we make at 8.9 on our own internal scale at six reeds — and partly that your brain has learned what it means. Rotate a hallway if you like. Keep the sleep scent constant, and refill it rather than replacing it: ₹2,399 for 300ml keeps a 50ml vessel running about 8–11 months. 130ml ₹1,299 for 14–18 weeks.

Part one — the case for each, made properly

I am not going to pretend one of these is the sophisticated choice. I have customers on their eleventh refill of the same composition and customers who change four times a year, and both households smell wonderful. What separates them is not taste; it is what they want fragrance to do. One wants recognition. One wants renewal. And there is a third card below, which is the cost of the switch itself — the part nobody prices before they decide.

1
THE CASE FOR A SIGNATURE
A scent becomes an address
Fragrance attaches itself to memory more directly than anything else a home contains. Keep one composition running for two or three years and it stops being a product you bought and becomes the way your house smells — recognised by guests before they reach the door, and by your family for the rest of their lives. The economics agree with the sentiment, which is rare. A signature household refills rather than rebuys: ₹2,399 for 300ml at roughly ₹8 per ml, or ₹3,499 for 500ml at roughly ₹7, against ₹15–₹17 per ml for buying bottles. It is also the only route on which a vessel earns its keep, being filled six or ten times rather than once.
The tell: if guests comment on your home's smell, you already have a signature. Think hard before you spend money to lose it.
2
THE CASE FOR ROTATION
Seasons change; so does what a room needs
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749 · 9.0/10An Indian year is not one climate. A cold, transparent composition like Morning Freshness — Malabar lemon, peppermint, Nilgiri eucalyptus — cuts through the heavy damp air of a monsoon in a way that a warm gourmand cannot, while Fresh Brew's Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla comes into its own in December when the same warmth reads as comfort rather than weight. Rotation follows that, and it has a second benefit that is entirely practical: every new bottle brings six fresh fibre reeds, so a household that rotates never has to think about reed age at all. Given that we do not sell reeds separately, that is a genuine advantage of the more expensive route, and I would rather say so than pretend the cheap route has no gaps.
The bonus: four bottles a year is four reed changes a year, handled without a thought.
3
THE COST OF SWITCHING
What a change actually asks of you
A change is not simply a different bottle arriving. If you are reusing a vessel it means running the old oil out completely, washing the glass, drying it upside down for a full day, and fitting new reeds — because old fibre holds the old composition and will report it underneath the new one for a fortnight. If you are buying a whole new bottle, none of that applies and the work is zero, which is why most rotating households simply buy bottles and keep the emptied vessels for later refills. Either way the cost per millilitre of the rotation route is close to double the refill route, and the honest way to decide is to look at that number rather than at the sticker price of a single bottle.

Part two — six questions that settle it in a minute

Answer these honestly and the decision usually makes itself. The middle columns are not scores; they are simply which way each answer points.

Signature or rotation
Six questions, and which way each answer points
Ask yourself Points to a signature Points to rotation The reason
Do guests mention the smell of your home? ★ Yes — it is already an address No — nothing established to lose Recognition takes years and is destroyed in an afternoon
Can you smell it when you walk in from outside? Yes — the fragrance is working Genuinely no, even on the doorstep Adaptation is not boredom; the doorstep test separates them
How many vessels do you run? One — variety would mean changeovers Two or more — rotate one, keep one A second vessel gives you variety without washing anything
Which room is it? Bedroom or nursery — repetition is the point Entryway or living room — a first impression Sleep associations are built by constancy
Does the room's job change with the season? No — sealed, air-conditioned, consistent Yes — monsoon damp, then a dry winter Cold, sharp compositions read better in humid air
What is your yearly fragrance budget? Around ₹3,499 for a 500ml refill Around ₹5,196 for four 130ml bottles ₹7 per ml against about ₹10 per ml, on listed prices
The honest caveat: the refill column is only cheaper if you already own a vessel and your reeds are in good condition, because refills are oil only — no glass, no reeds — and reeds are not sold as a separate item. A signature household still needs to buy a bottle occasionally purely for its six fibre reeds, which narrows the gap between the two routes by roughly the price of a 50ml every few months.

The two routes, and the one that splits the difference
The SOSA principle
Rotate for pleasure. Never rotate as a repair.
A fragrance you have stopped noticing is usually a fragrance your nose has filed away, not one that has failed. Buying a new scent to fix that gives you three weeks of relief and the same silence afterwards.

Part three — the arrangement most homes actually end up with

Almost nobody stays purely in one camp, and the compromise that emerges is consistently the same. One constant scent in the part of the house that greets people, and one changing scent somewhere private. The entryway or living room carries the signature, refilled year after year from a 300ml or 500ml at ₹7–₹8 per millilitre; a bedroom, study or bathroom takes whatever 50ml has caught your eye this season. You get an address and a change of scene, and the expensive rotation habit applies to only one vessel rather than the whole house. If you are starting from nothing, a duo set is the cheapest way into that arrangement — ₹1,548 for two 50ml bottles of Morning Freshness and Mountain Breeze, or ₹1,498 for the Day & Night pair — because you get two vessels and twelve fibre reeds in one order.

Two cautions about rotating within one open space. If the rooms are connected — most Indian living-dining arrangements are — the two compositions have to share a note or you will get a seam where they meet, a spot in the room where neither fragrance makes sense. Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus; Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth and a soft musk. Those two pairs are safe. Fresh Brew opposite Morning Freshness in one open plan is not, and no amount of distance between the bottles will fix it. The second caution is timing: if you are changing the scent in a vessel rather than adding a new one, run the old oil out completely first. Pouring a new composition over a half-finished old one produces an accidental third fragrance that nobody balanced.

Finally, the question underneath the question. A great many people arrive at "should I try something new" because the current bottle has gone quiet, and I would ask you to spend fifteen free minutes before spending anything at all. Walk out, come back, and see whether it meets you at the door. Flip all six reeds — a stalled reed delivers a fraction of what it did in week one. Check the bottle is not sitting in a draught from an AC vent or in direct sun, both of which strip reeds and empty a bottle weeks early while leaving the room quiet. If after all three the room is genuinely silent with a full bottle, the reeds are old and the fix is a new set — which arrives with a bottle, and at that point trying a new fragrance costs you nothing extra. That is the one situation where I would tell you to rotate without hesitation.

A signature scent is the cheapest thing in this range and the hardest to buy back. Change it because you want to, not because you have stopped hearing it.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — a year of scent, priced both ways

Five household patterns, each costed on listed prices with the arithmetic shown. The weeks-covered column is the honest one: a 50ml runs 6–8 weeks and a 130ml 14–18, so some rotation plans leave gaps you should know about before you buy.

The yearly edit
What twelve months costs on each pattern
Household pattern What you buy in a year Oil it gives Cost, as arithmetic Roughly what it covers
One signature, one vessel ★ One 500ml refill 500ml ₹3,499 · ₹3,499 ÷ 500 ≈ ₹7 per ml About 14–18 months — over a year, with oil to spare
One signature, modest use One 300ml refill 300ml ₹2,399 · ₹2,399 ÷ 300 ≈ ₹8 per ml About 8–11 months — top up before the year ends
Quarterly rotation, four scents Four 130ml bottles 520ml 4 × ₹1,299 = ₹5,196 · ≈ ₹10 per ml Four bottles at 14–18 weeks each — a full year, and four reed sets
Two seasons, monsoon and winter Two 130ml bottles plus a 300ml refill 560ml 2 × ₹1,299 + ₹2,399 = ₹4,997 Two new scents, two reed sets, and refills between them
Signature downstairs, rotation upstairs One 300ml refill plus two 50ml bottles 400ml across two vessels ₹2,399 + ₹749 + ₹849 = ₹3,997 The hybrid — an address and a change of scene
Starting from nothing A duo set, then refill 100ml, then whichever refill suits ₹1,548 for 2 × 50ml · ₹2,548 for 2 × 130ml Two vessels and twelve fibre reeds in one order
Honest notes for buyers: every figure above is arithmetic on SOSA's listed August 2026 prices, shown so you can check it — ₹3,499 ÷ 500ml ≈ ₹7 per ml, ₹2,399 ÷ 300ml ≈ ₹8 per ml, 4 × ₹1,299 = ₹5,196 and ₹5,196 ÷ 520ml ≈ ₹10 per ml — not measured or audited figures, and duration ranges are working guidance that shifts with heat, reed count and ventilation. Refills are oil only: no vessel, no reeds. Reeds are not sold separately, so a rotating household gets its reed changes with each new bottle while a signature household should plan to buy a bottle occasionally for the reeds alone. A bigger bottle buys duration, not projection — a 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml and at six reeds smells about the same. Reed oil never goes in a Sukoon or Boond. Stand the bottle on a tray, keep it out of direct sun and away from children and pets. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Fresh and Grounded reed diffuser duo set
Rotation without a single changeover
SOSA Fresh & Grounded duo · Morning Freshness + Mountain Breeze ₹1,548 / 2 × 50ml
The cheapest honest way to have two fragrances: two vessels, twelve fibre reeds and no washing, drying or ghosting. The pair is chosen deliberately — Malabar lemon and peppermint meet Himalayan pine and cedar on green eucalyptus, so they can run in connected rooms without a seam where they overlap. Move one bottle between rooms as the seasons turn, or run both and let the house have two moods. ₹2,548 for 2 × 130ml, and both vessels take the oil-only refill afterwards.

A note from Sonal

My grandmother's house smelled of exactly one thing for as long as I knew it, and I can summon it now more precisely than I can summon most photographs. That is what a signature does, and no seasonal edit ever built to be clever will do it. A perfumer is supposed to argue for variety. I am arguing for constancy, at least in one room of your house.

But I sell more when you rotate, and I want to be straightforward about that. Four bottles a year at ₹1,299 is ₹5,196; a 500ml refill in one scent is ₹3,499. If I only wanted the larger number I would write about seasonal scenting and say nothing about refills at all. The refill line exists because I found the alternative — a cupboard of identical vessels bought because the oil ran out — genuinely wasteful.

The one thing I would ask is that you do not change fragrance to fix a room that has gone quiet. That almost never works, because the cause is usually your own adaptation or a set of reeds that has been standing there since last winter, and a new scent solves neither for longer than a fortnight. Walk out, walk back in, flip the reeds, and then decide with a clear nose. Everything is composed and handmade in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should I change fragrance every time my reed diffuser runs out?
Only if you want to. Refilling the same scent is the cheapest arrangement we offer — roughly ₹7–₹8 per millilitre against ₹15–₹17 for a new 50ml bottle — and a scent kept for years becomes the way your home is recognised. Change when the pleasure of something new is worth the difference, not because the bottle happens to be empty.
Is it cheaper to rotate fragrances or stay with one?
Staying with one, clearly. A 500ml refill at ₹3,499 works out at about ₹7 per millilitre; four 130ml bottles across a year is 4 × ₹1,299 = ₹5,196 for 520ml, about ₹10 per millilitre. The extra roughly ₹1,700 buys variety and four fresh sets of six fibre reeds, which a refill does not include.
I have stopped noticing my scent — should I switch?
Test it first. Step outside for fifteen minutes and walk back in; if it greets you at the door, you have adapted rather than tired of it, and switching will give you three weeks of novelty and the same silence afterwards. Flip all six reeds too. If the room is genuinely quiet with a full bottle, the reeds are old — and since they only come with bottles, that is the moment to try something new.
Which two SOSA scents work well together in one home?
Two compositions in connected rooms need a shared note or you get a seam. Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus; Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth and a soft musk. Both pairs are sold as duo sets — ₹1,548 and ₹1,598 for two 50ml bottles — and both give you two vessels to refill later.
Should I change my bedroom fragrance seasonally?
I would not. A sleep scent works partly through learned association, so constancy is doing real work there — Evening Calm at 8.9 is built quiet for that reason. Rotate the entryway or the living room instead, where a change of fragrance reads as a change of season rather than a disruption of a habit.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, on whether to change fragrance at refill time or keep a single signature scent. Arithmetic flag: all yearly costs and per-millilitre figures are simple arithmetic on SOSA's listed August 2026 prices — ₹3,499 ÷ 500ml ≈ ₹7, ₹2,399 ÷ 300ml ≈ ₹8, 4 × ₹1,299 = ₹5,196, ₹5,196 ÷ 520ml ≈ ₹10, 2 × ₹1,299 + ₹2,399 = ₹4,997, ₹2,399 + ₹749 + ₹849 = ₹3,997 — not audited or measured figures. Bottle-life ranges are SOSA's own working guidance from in-house testing and customer correspondence; results vary with room volume, ventilation, reed count and season.
