This is the fork in the road, and most people take the wrong turn because it is the cheaper-looking one. The default
For projection, the diffuser is the only lever that exists
Take the word projection literally and the decision resolves itself. Projection means fragrance arriving somewhere away from its source, and arrival requires transport. In a passive reed diffuser there is no transport: oil climbs the sticks, evaporates from their wet surface at the pace your room's temperature and air movement set, and then goes wherever the room's own currents happen to take it, which in a bedroom usually means being thinned by a fan and removed through an open door. Change the liquid in that system and every step behaves identically. The only variable you can actually move is whether something is supplying air movement, and that is a purchase of hardware rather than of fragrance. This is why our default answer to the question in the title is always the diffuser, and why we say it even when the reader arrived intending to spend Rs 799 and leaves considering Rs 1,198.

If you do not like the scent, change the oil - for the right reason
There is a real case for changing the oil, and it deserves saying clearly so this page is not read as one-note advice. Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. Then buy both, deliberately and as two separate decisions, rather than hoping one purchase covers the pair. Choose the register on character alone: which of the five reed fragrances you want to live with, or which of the seven Hotel Collection registers you would like running in a machine. Can I put my reed diffuser oil into an ultrasonic diffuser?
No, and it matters, because the formats are genuinely different. Reed diffuser oil is formulated to climb porous sticks by capillary action and evaporate slowly from them; an ultrasonic needs a water-based fragrance designed to disperse in water and be broken into a mist by a vibrating plate. Putting the wrong liquid into an ultrasonic can clog it and will not perform as intended. The Hotel Collection at Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for a 100ml refill or Rs 1,799 for a pack of seven 15ml bottles is the water-based range made for our ultrasonic machines. Separately, the waterless Safar and Vaayu run their own waterless blends and ship with them included, and the water-based Hotel Collection bottle never goes into either of those.
Is the Safar the right upgrade if my problem is a whole bedroom?
Probably not, and we would rather tell you than take the order. The SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion diffuser that SOSA's own copy lists as best for a car, a handbag, a work desk, a bedside, hotel and travel and working from home. That is a personal-space product with strong near-field presence, and there is no published room-coverage figure for it, so we will never quote one. If your sentence is I want the whole room to smell of it when I open the door, an ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 is both the more suitable answer and the cheaper one. If your sentence is I want it strong and true right at my bed with no water involved, the Safar is exactly right.
Will changing the fragrance help if the diffuser is in the wrong place?
No, and placement is worth fixing before any purchase because it is free. Move the bottle out of the direct path of a ceiling fan or an air conditioner, which thins fragrance rather than spreading it; keep it away from an open window or balcony door, where scented air is leaving; raise it to roughly seated or lying nose height rather than the floor or a low shelf; and put it in the part of the room you genuinely occupy, which for most people is beside the bed or the chair they read in. Those adjustments often produce a noticeably better experience within a day. What they cannot do is convert a passive system into an active one, so the far corner will stay quiet, and knowing that ceiling exists saves you from waiting for the next tweak to work.
How long should I wait before deciding an upgrade has failed?
Give any change three or four days and judge it with the re-entry test rather than from beside the bottle. A new reed diffuser needs a day or two for the oil to climb the sticks fully and reach a steady rate, and your own nose needs to be taken out of the room and brought back in to give an honest reading, because adaptation makes owners the worst judges of their own homes. With a machine, run it at a low setting first and increase only if the re-entry test says you should, because overdosing a bedroom is the most common mistake we see and it is unpleasant to live with. If anyone in the house reports a headache, turn it down or off - that is a recalibration signal, not something to push through.
