Founder Diaries · Reed Diffuser & Home Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
Possession is handed over before anybody lives there. The keys change hands, the family walks through echoing rooms, somebody takes a photograph at the door - and then the flat is locked again for weeks while the carpentry, the curtains and the shifting get sorted. That gap is the whole problem with a possession gift, and for home fragrance it changes the useful advice from what to buy into when to hand it over.
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser, British rose and night jasmine, from Rs 799
SOSA Garden Bloom · British rose and night-blooming jasmine from ₹799 →
The one to hand over on moving day. SOSA Garden Bloom, ₹799 for 50ml and ₹1,299 for 130ml - British rose and night-blooming jasmine, the most decorative of the five and the one that most reads as a present rather than household supply. Give it when there is a table to stand it on, not on the day of the keys.
Quick answers — read this first
Is a reed diffuser a good possession-day gift? It is a good gift for the flat, but it belongs to the move-in rather than to possession day. A reed diffuser from ₹749 needs a surface to stand on and somebody walking past it. An empty flat has neither, so the bottle waits in its box.

What can a diffuser do about a newly painted flat? Nothing, and no page should claim otherwise. Fragrance adds a scent; it never removes one. A reed diffuser puts a scent into a room that is being used. It is not a fix for a freshly finished flat and should not be bought as one.

So when should I give it? When the furniture is in and they have started living there. If you want to mark possession day itself, hand over something small then - a candle at ₹399 - and keep the ₹749 to ₹1,349 diffuser for the housewarming, when it has a table to stand on.
The short answer
Short answer: Give it at move-in, not at possession. A reed diffuser from Rs 749 needs a surface and a room somebody is using, and a possession-day flat is empty. Fragrance adds a scent and never removes one, so it is not a fix for a newly finished flat either.
The pick: A 50ml reed from ₹749 or a Garden Bloom 130ml at ₹1,299 - handed over on the day they move in rather than the day they get the keys.
Why: It is a gift for a room in use. Timing it to the move-in is the difference between a bottle on a console table and a bottle in a carton.
Sending something when somebody is having a hard time - at a glanceKeep it small - candle ₹399, attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, nothing to switch onSay the words yourself - no card goes in the parcelNever - a parcel instead of turning up
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
Straight answer
What is a good gift for a new flat possession?
The honest answer starts by separating the two dates. Possession is a handover: the flat is empty, the finishing work may not be done, and the family usually does not move in for weeks. A reed diffuser is for a home that is being lived in - it needs one flat surface, and it needs people walking past it, and on possession day there is neither. That does not make it the wrong gift, it makes it the wrong day. Fragrance adds a scent; it never removes one, so it is also worth saying plainly that a diffuser is not an answer to a freshly finished flat, and nobody should buy it expecting that. What works: mark possession with something small if you want to mark it at all, then give the diffuser when the furniture is in - a 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849 for a bedroom or a hallway, a 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 for an open living and dining area, each running about 6 to 10 weeks. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
An empty flat has no console table, no side table and nobody in it. A bottle of reeds has nowhere to be until the furniture arrives.
Hold it for the move-in. Then size it by room: 50ml from ₹749 for a bedroom or hallway, 130ml from ₹1,249 for an open living and dining area.

The gap between possession day and the day anybody lives there

Three things about a possession-day flat decide what you should do, and the first one is simply that nobody lives there yet.

1
The first fact
The flat is empty, so there is nowhere to put anything
On the day of possession there is no console table at the entrance, no side table by the sofa and no shelf in the bedroom, because there is no sofa and no bedroom furniture. A reed diffuser needs about the footprint of a coffee mug on a surface that does not yet exist, and it needs the reeds standing upright rather than lying in a carton on a floor.

So the bottle waits. That is not a disaster, but it is worth understanding before you buy, because a gift that waits several weeks in a box is a gift nobody has yet received. If you want the object to actually be used, hand it over on the day the furniture is in. If you want to mark possession itself, a small thing given then and the diffuser given later is two gestures rather than one delayed one.
Tip: Give the diffuser to the room, and the room does not exist until the furniture does.
2
The second fact
A freshly finished flat is not a fragrance problem to solve
This is where well-meant advice goes badly wrong, so it is worth being blunt. Fragrance adds a scent; it never removes one. A reed diffuser puts Malabar lemon and mint, or rose and jasmine, or pine and cedar into a room. It does not act on anything already there, it is not a treatment, and buying one for that reason will disappoint whoever you gave it to.

What a newly finished flat actually needs is time and open windows, and that has nothing to do with anything SOSA sells. Treat the diffuser as what it is: a scent for a room people are using, chosen by somebody who thought about the room. Bought on that basis it is a good gift. Bought as a fix, it is the wrong purchase, and no price in the range changes that.
3
The third fact
Once they are in, the room decides the size
When the move does happen, the sizing question is the ordinary one and it is worth getting right rather than defaulting to the bigger bottle because the flat is new. A 50ml at ₹749 to ₹849 is for a bedroom, a study, a hallway or an entrance - which in most new flats is exactly where a first diffuser goes, on the shoe cabinet or the console by the door.

A 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 is for an open-plan living and dining area or a large living room. The commonest error in this whole category is a 130ml in a small closed bedroom, and a brand new flat does not change that arithmetic. If you want to spend more without over-sizing anything, a duo set at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 gives two 50ml bottles for two rooms.
Tip: New does not mean large. Size the bottle to the room, exactly as you would anywhere else.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
The size decision, before the scent decision
50ml or 130ml is a room question, not a budget question
The 50ml from ₹749 suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or anybody receiving their first diffuser. The 130ml from ₹1,249 suits an open-plan living and dining area or a large 3BHK living room, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom - a bigger bottle in the wrong room gets moved into a corridor. All five scents run about 6 to 10 weeks either way.

Work it out in this order
How to handle a possession-day gift without wasting it
  1. Ask when they actually move in, then plan the gift around that date.
  2. Do not buy a diffuser to act on a freshly finished flat - it cannot.
  3. Mark possession with something small like a candle at Rs 399.
  4. Give the reed at move-in: 50ml from Rs 749, 130ml from Rs 1,249.
The SOSA principle
Half of gifting well is choosing the object and the other half is choosing the day, and possession is the clearest case where the second half matters more. The same bottle is a good gift in week six and a cardboard box in week one.
Ask when the furniture arrives before you ask which scent, and the rest of the decision becomes easy.

What to choose once the flat has furniture in it

Once there is furniture, the choice is the normal one across five scents. Garden Bloom at ₹799 for 50ml and ₹1,299 for 130ml is British rose and night-blooming jasmine, the most decorative of the five and the one that most reads as a present being handed over in person rather than a household item. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon and mint and the least declarative, which makes it the safer send when you have not seen the finished rooms. Evening Calm at ₹799 is lavender and chamomile - that is the name on the bottle and a description of what is in it. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, dry rather than sweet. Fresh Brew at ₹849 is Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla and the strongest opinion in the range.

The SOSA gift edit
Four ways to play a possession-day gift, and where each fails
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Give the reed at move-in · ₹749 to ₹1,349 The recommended route. The flat has furniture, the bottle has a surface, and the gift is used from the day it arrives. 50ml for a bedroom or hallway, 130ml for an open living and dining area, about 6 to 10 weeks either way. It fails only if you needed to be seen giving something on possession day itself.
Give the reed on possession day · ₹749 to ₹1,349 Workable if you simply cannot be there twice, and the bottle keeps in its box until they set it up. It fails as an experience: nothing happens on the day, and by the time it is opened the occasion it belonged to is weeks past.
Something small on the day · ₹399 to ₹499 A candle at ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours, or an attar from ₹379, given at the handover with the diffuser kept for the move. Two moments instead of one. It fails if two gifts feel like too much in a relationship where one was already generous.
A duo set, held back · ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 Two 50ml bottles in one box, given when they move in, so the living room and the main bedroom are both covered from the first week. It fails if the family is moving into one or two rooms of the flat while work continues elsewhere, which is common and makes the second bottle premature.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
When it has to look like an occasion
A duo set is the readymade gift box, without anybody assembling a hamper
Two 50ml reeds in one box: Day & Night pairs Morning Freshness lemon-mint with Evening Calm lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with Mountain Breeze pine and cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla with Garden Bloom rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. The 130ml x 2 versions are ₹2,498, ₹2,548 and ₹2,598.

A last note on what this gift is honestly for. A reed diffuser does not make a new flat feel like a home - that is something the people and the years do, not a bottle. What is true and smaller: a room that smells of something chosen rather than of nothing is a different room to walk into, and for a family arriving into rooms they have been waiting on for a long time, one chosen thing on the console table is a reasonable, unpretentious present. Buy it for that, hand it over when there is a console table, and it will be used.

SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, Malabar lemon and mint, Rs 749
Malabar lemon and mint. The least declarative of the five and the safest thing to send into a home you have never stood in. 50ml ₹749, 130ml ₹1,249.

₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The gift is fine. The date is the mistake. An empty flat cannot use a bottle of reeds and will not remember getting one.

The SOSA gifting range

Two questions settle almost every reed diffuser gift, and the first one is not price. How big is the room it is going into? A 50ml suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; a 130ml suits an open-plan living and dining area, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom. Then: how much do you actually know about their taste? The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five for a home you have never stood in, and Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla is the strongest opinion in the range. Price follows those two answers rather than leading them.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick the size by the room, then the scent by how little you know about them
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA reed diffusers 50ml The standard gift size Five scents, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in or switch off - right for a bedroom, a study or a first diffuser from ₹749
SOSA reed diffusers 130ml The large-room size The same five scents in the bigger bottle - for an open-plan living area or a 3BHK, and too much for a small closed room from ₹1,249
SOSA reed duo gift sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 - the readymade housewarming and client gift from ₹1,498
SOSA reed refills 300ml and 500ml So a gifted diffuser does not become a dead bottle - published for four of the five scents ₹2,399 / ₹3,499
SOSA scented candles Hand-poured, small batches ₹399 for about 15 to 18 hours - the smaller home gift, and the one that needs a flame from ₹399
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil The worn alternative, and a taste decision - only when you can name what they already wear from ₹379
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large open home or a business, not a flat ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹5,999 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The reed diffuser is the product people are least embarrassed to give and most surprised by afterwards. What they expect is a decorative object. What it actually is, is a small piece of a household that runs for six to ten weeks and then ends, which is a very different thing from an ornament somebody has to keep forever out of politeness.

The reason I recommend it so often for gifting is unromantic: you are buying for a room rather than for a person. Personal fragrance is a taste decision, and when you cannot finish the sentence she usually wears something with..., no amount of money makes the guess better. A room does not have a signature scent it is loyal to. That is why a reed diffuser works for a colleague, a client, a mother-in-law and a friend's new flat - relationships where you may like somebody very much and still have no idea what is on their dressing table.

The one thing I would press on is size, because it is where good intentions go wrong. The 130ml is not the better gift, it is the bigger room's gift. Put it in a small closed bedroom and the person will move it to a corridor within a week. A 50ml at ₹749 in the right room beats a 130ml at ₹1,249 in the wrong one every single time, and if you want to spend more, spend it on the duo set so they get two rooms rather than one very loud one.

Frequently asked questions

Should I give a reed diffuser on possession day or at the housewarming?
At the move-in or housewarming, in almost every case. Possession usually hands over an empty flat weeks before anybody lives there, and a reed diffuser needs a surface to stand on and a room in use. Given on the day the furniture arrives, it is used immediately.
Will a reed diffuser help with the smell of a newly finished flat?
No. Fragrance adds a scent and never removes one. A reed diffuser puts its own scent into a room and does not act on anything already in the air. It should be bought as a scent for a room people are using, not as a solution to anything.
What should I give on possession day itself if I want to mark it?
Something small and self-contained that does not need furniture to work. A candle at Rs 399 runs about 15 to 18 hours, and an attar starts at Rs 379 and is worn rather than placed. Keep the diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 1,349 for the day they move in.
Which size should I choose once they have moved in?
By room, not by the size of the flat. A 50ml at Rs 749 to Rs 849 suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or the console by the door. A 130ml at Rs 1,249 to Rs 1,349 suits an open-plan living and dining area. A 130ml in a small closed bedroom is the commonest mistake in this category.
Can SOSA help me choose for a flat I have not seen?
Yes. Message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with how many rooms there are, whether the living and dining run as one space, when the family is moving in and what you want to spend, and you will get one recommendation rather than a list - including the times the answer is to wait.
