Founder Diaries · Just-Because & Surprise Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated September 2026
Perfume is the gift people reach for first and the one they should reach for last. It is the only fragrance gift that is a claim about her rather than about a place, and the bottle stays on the shelf whether or not she reaches for it. This page has one piece of advice running through it: buy the 10ml at ₹599, and only buy at all if you can already name what she wears.
SOSA Ameeri attar, Taif rose and sandalwood, from Rs 385
SOSA Ameeri · Taif rose, Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron from ₹385 →
A perfume page that leads with an attar, on purpose. Ameeri, 3ml, ₹385 - Taif rose with Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron - is what to buy when you cannot name the family she already wears, and that is most people. If you can name it, the 10ml perfume at ₹599 is the accurate gift; the 50ml is not.
Quick answers — read this first
Is perfume a good just-because gift for a girlfriend? Only when you can name something she already wears. It is the highest-risk fragrance gift because it is a judgement about her taste, and a 50ml bottle she does not reach for is a visible mistake that lasts months. If you can name it, a 10ml SOSA perfume at ₹599 is a precise gift.

How much do SOSA perfumes cost? Alcohol-free, at ₹599 for 10ml, ₹1,799 or ₹1,899 for 50ml and ₹3,499 or ₹3,599 for 100ml. For a gift with no occasion attached the 10ml is the right size, because the whole point is to stay small enough not to need explaining.

Which SOSA perfume should I pick? Match the family she already wears. Bahaar is pear and freesia, Chashni is sweet fruity gourmand, Khayaal is the softer modern one, Zaffran is saffron and sweet amber and Tabac Noir is tobacco and vanilla. These are SOSA's own compositions, not the designer fragrances they are described as inspired by.
The short answer
Short answer: Only buy a perfume if you can name what she already wears, and then buy the 10ml at Rs 599 rather than the 50ml at Rs 1,799 or Rs 1,899. A wrong 50ml is a bottle she has to keep looking at for a year.
The pick: A 10ml SOSA perfume at ₹599, in the family she already wears - or a 3ml attar at ₹379 if you cannot name one.
Why: The 10ml is small enough to be a casual gift and small enough to be wrong quietly, which a 50ml bottle is not.
Choosing a gift when there is no occasion - at a glanceSmall enough not to need explaining - attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, duo set ₹1,498Posted to another city - flat, light, nothing to assembleNever - anything that needs a reason to justify it
A gift with no occasion attached has one job an occasion gift does not: it has to make sense on its own. That usually means small enough not to need explaining and useful enough not to sit there - which is why a ₹379 attar often lands better than something three times the price handed over with an apology for the timing.
Straight answer
Should I give my girlfriend perfume as a just-because gift, and which size?
Only if you can finish the sentence she usually wears something with, and if you can, buy the 10ml. SOSA perfumes are alcohol-free and priced at ₹599 for 10ml, ₹1,799 or ₹1,899 for 50ml and ₹3,499 or ₹3,599 for 100ml, so the size decision is a large one. The case for the small bottle is not budget, it is consequence: a 10ml that misses her taste is a small thing that quietly runs out or does not, and a 50ml that misses is a bottle sitting on her shelf for a year. The five are Bahaar, English pear and freesia; Chashni, sweet fruity gourmand; Khayaal; Zaffran, saffron and sweet amber; and Tabac Noir, tobacco and vanilla. Each is described as inspired by a designer fragrance, and it is worth being plain about what that means: these are SOSA's own compositions, made in India, and not the designer fragrances themselves. If you cannot name what she wears, a 3ml attar at ₹379 or something for her room is the better purchase. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
A perfume you guessed at does not disappear. It sits on a shelf at eye level, in a 50ml bottle, for about a year - which is the entire argument for the ₹599 10ml.
The whole page in one line: 10ml at ₹599, not 50ml at ₹1,799. Small enough to be a Tuesday gift, and small enough to be wrong without it becoming furniture.
SOSA attars from ₹379

The two conditions that have to be true before you buy a perfume

Two conditions have to hold before perfume is the right purchase, and a third decision follows only if both do. Most of the difficulty on this page is in the first two, which are about knowledge rather than money, and the third is a size question people almost always answer in the wrong direction.

1
Condition one
Can you name the family she already wears?
Not the brand - the family. Sweet and edible, fruity and light, rose-led, woody, something with saffron or amber. If you can answer that in one phrase, you have enough to buy accurately, and the answer maps straight onto the range: pear and freesia for the fresh, light one, sweet fruity gourmand for the edible one, saffron and sweet amber for the warm one, tobacco and vanilla for the deep one.

If you cannot answer it, no amount of reading the notes on a page will fix that, and buying anyway is how people end up with the 50ml on the shelf. The honest alternative is not a more expensive perfume, it is a different product: a 3ml attar at ₹379, or something for a room she uses.
Tip: One phrase is enough. If you cannot produce one phrase, this is the wrong category.
2
Condition two
Does she want another bottle at all?
This is the condition nobody checks. Somebody with two fragrances she rotates has room for a third. Somebody who has worn the same one for six years is telling you something clear, and the useful gift there is a repeat of what she already finished rather than an alternative to it - which SOSA cannot supply if the bottle she loves is somebody else's.

There is also the alcohol-free question, which is a real difference rather than a marketing line. SOSA perfumes and attars are alcohol-free, so they behave differently on skin from a conventional spray: closer, softer at the edges, without the sharp opening a high-alcohol scent has. That is a feature for some people and a disappointment for somebody who likes the lift of a traditional eau de parfum, and it is better to know which she is beforehand.
3
The decision that follows
10ml at ₹599, 50ml at ₹1,799, or 100ml at ₹3,499
If both conditions hold, the size still matters more than the scent. A gift with no occasion attached is supposed to be light, and ₹599 is light in a way that ₹1,899 is not. The 10ml is also the version she can finish, and finishing something is the cleanest possible end to a gift given for no reason.

The 50ml and the 100ml are repurchase sizes. They are the right buy when she has already worn the 10ml down and told you she likes it, or when you are replacing a bottle you have watched her empty. Buying either of them as a first guess converts a small uncertainty into a large visible one, at three to six times the price.
Tip: Treat 50ml and 100ml as repeat purchases, never as first guesses.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.

Work it out in this order
How to buy a perfume without guessing
  1. Name the family in one phrase: sweet, fruity, rose, woody, saffron or tobacco.
  2. Check she actually rotates fragrances rather than wearing one for years.
  3. Tell her it is alcohol-free, because it sits closer to the skin than a spray.
  4. Buy the 10ml at Rs 599. Keep 50ml and 100ml for a proven repeat.
The SOSA principle
A perfume is the only fragrance gift that cannot be wrong quietly. Everything else gets used up or lives in a room; a bottle she does not reach for stays visible for as long as it stays full.
Which is why the small size is not the cheap option here - it is the considerate one.

The five SOSA perfumes, and which size to buy

The five SOSA perfumes are alcohol-free and sold in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml. Bahaar is English pear and freesia, the lightest and the easiest to wear in daylight, at ₹599, ₹1,899 and ₹3,599. Chashni is a sweet fruity gourmand at the same prices, and is the one to pick if what she wears is recognisably edible. Khayaal is the softer modern composition, also ₹599, ₹1,899 and ₹3,599. Zaffran is saffron with sweet amber at ₹599, ₹1,799 and ₹3,499, and it is the most assertive of the five. Tabac Noir is tobacco and vanilla at the same prices and is the deepest, which makes it an evening choice rather than an all-day one. Each of these is described as inspired by a well-known designer fragrance; SOSA is independent, and these are SOSA's own compositions rather than those fragrances.

The SOSA gift edit
Perfume against the three things you could buy instead
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
A 10ml perfume · ₹599 Alcohol-free personal fragrance in the smallest size made. The right buy when you can name her family in one phrase, and the only perfume size that suits a gift with no occasion attached. It fails when the phrase was a guess, though at ₹599 it fails cheaply.
A 50ml or 100ml perfume · ₹1,799 to ₹3,599 The repurchase sizes. Genuinely the right gift when she has finished a bottle and asked for it again. It fails as a first guess, because a large bottle of the wrong thing is a mistake she has to keep looking at rather than one that quietly runs out.
A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 Alcohol-free concentrated oil, rolled on rather than sprayed, in four characters. The better buy when you half know her taste, because it is smaller and the format itself is the interesting part. It fails for somebody who wants a fragrance that carries across a room.
A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 Home fragrance for one room, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in. The right buy when you cannot name anything she wears, because it sidesteps the taste question entirely. It fails if she already keeps her home scented and has her own preferences there.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

Two practical notes before you buy. Alcohol-free fragrance sits closer to the skin than a conventional spray, so it is applied at the pulse points and reapplied more readily through the day, and that is worth saying when you hand it over rather than leaving her to work out why it behaves differently. And if the 10ml at ₹599 still feels like more of a decision about her than you want to make on an ordinary day, that instinct is probably right: a 3ml attar at ₹379 or a 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 makes no claim about her taste at all.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

The reason I push people towards the 10ml is not price. It is that a small bottle can be wrong quietly, and a large one cannot - and on a day with no occasion attached, quiet is the whole idea.

The SOSA gifting range

Three questions settle almost every one of these. Will it be worn, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to be able to name something they already wear? Will it sit in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser asks nothing of you except an address? Or does it go in a car, where the real choice is between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray at the same price? Answer that, then pick the band - and with no occasion attached, the band should usually be lower than you first reach for.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The orders I like most are the ones with no date attached. Somebody buys one attar on a Wednesday afternoon and asks us to send it to a flat in another city, and there is no birthday in the note and no anniversary and no festival. Those are, in my experience, the gifts that actually get used, and I think the reason is unglamorous: nobody has to live up to them. An anniversary gift carries an expectation. A Wednesday gift carries none, so it gets opened, put on a shelf and used the next morning.

The practical advice I give people is the opposite of what they expect. Go smaller than you think. A large unexplained present asks a question - what is this for, what do I owe you - and the person receiving it spends energy answering it. A ₹379 attar, a ₹449 car scent, a ₹749 reed diffuser: these are small enough to be accepted without any of that. If you want to spend more, spend it on accuracy instead of size - the right scent for somebody's actual flat beats a bigger bottle of the wrong one every time.

One honest thing about the harder version of this. People write to us when somebody they love is having a terrible week, and they want to send something that helps. I will not tell you that a fragrance does that, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say to somebody and it is worth saying. It is not treatment, it is not a substitute for turning up, and anybody who sells it to you as either is selling you something else.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a SOSA perfume cost?
Rs 599 for 10ml, Rs 1,799 or Rs 1,899 for 50ml and Rs 3,499 or Rs 3,599 for 100ml, depending on which of the five you choose. All of them are alcohol-free.
Are SOSA perfumes the same as the designer fragrances they mention?
No. Each is described as inspired by a well-known fragrance, but they are SOSA's own compositions, made in India, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any of those brands.
What size perfume should I gift?
The 10ml at Rs 599 unless you are replacing a bottle you have watched her finish. The 50ml and 100ml are repeat-purchase sizes, and buying one as a first guess turns a small uncertainty into a large one at three to six times the price.
What if I do not know what perfume she wears?
Then buy something else. A 3ml attar at Rs 379 is smaller and less of a claim about her taste, and a 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 is chosen for a room rather than for her. Both are better purchases than a guessed perfume.
What does alcohol-free actually change?
It sits closer to the skin than a conventional spray and opens more softly, without the sharp first few minutes a high-alcohol fragrance has. Some people prefer that and some people miss the projection of a spray, so it is worth mentioning when you give it.
