Two of the four faults live in the reeds, and both are easy to see. The first is saturation. A reed works because oil travels up through tiny channels in the wood and evaporates from the exposed surface, but over a couple of weeks the upper length of the stick stops pulling fresh oil efficiently and the evaporating surface quietly goes flat. The fix is the oldest advice in home fragrance and it genuinely works: lift the whole bundle out, turn it upside down so the soaked end is now in the air, set it back in the bottle and leave it two days. Most people notice the difference the same evening. The second is clogging. Reeds sit in an ordinary Indian home collecting ordinary household dust, and after many weeks the oil already inside them thickens and the channels partly block. The other two faults are about supply and about conditions. Start with supply, because it is the one people forget to look at. Hold the bottle up in daylight and see how much oil is actually left. If the level has dropped near the bottom, or the reeds are only just standing in liquid, then the amount of fragrance reaching the evaporating surface has fallen and so has the output. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. How often should I flip the reeds, and can I flip them too often?
Once a week is a good habit and roughly what we suggest to everyone. Flipping resets the evaporating surface by putting the oil-soaked end into the air, and you will usually notice a lift within a few hours. You can flip more often than that if you enjoy it, but there is a cost worth knowing about: every flip briefly raises the evaporation rate, so a diffuser that gets turned every other day will run through its bottle faster than one turned weekly. That is a trade rather than a fault. Use a tissue or paper towel to hold the reeds while you turn them, wipe any drips off the bottle neck and off the surface underneath, and wash your hands afterwards. What flipping will not do is extend reach. It makes the air near the bottle livelier; it adds nothing that carries fragrance to the other side of the room.
My reeds look dry at the top even though the bottle is full. Is that a fault?
It is the clearest sign that the reeds have reached the end of their useful life, and it is a consumable problem rather than a defect. When reeds are working, oil wicks upward and you can see the stick darken for a good part of its length above the liquid. When the channels inside have thickened with old oil or the surface has taken on weeks of household dust, that wicking slows and the top stays pale and dry while the bottle underneath stays full. Fit a fresh set of reeds into the same bottle and you will usually get the fragrance back immediately. It is also worth wiping the neck of the bottle, because a sticky ring of dried oil around the opening tends to collect dust and make the problem come back sooner.
Could my reed diffuser have gone off or lost its fragrance in the bottle?
The oil itself is far more stable than most people assume, and a bottle that has been standing in an ordinary room is very unlikely to be the problem. What does change a fragrance is heat and light, so a diffuser that has spent weeks on a sunny windowsill or above a hob can smell flatter than it did when it arrived, and the top notes are the first to go. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat and that is largely avoided. Before concluding anything, try this: lift the reeds out and smell the bottle itself. If the oil smells right in the bottle but the room does not, the fragrance is intact and the issue is either the reeds or the fact that you are asking a passive system to cross a room. It worked brilliantly for the first week and now it seems weaker. Did something break?
Nothing broke, and this is one of the most common notes we get. Two ordinary things are happening at once. The first is your nose. Olfactory adaptation is real and it is fast: when you live with a constant scent, your brain stops reporting it after a while, which is why visitors notice your home the moment they walk in and you do not. Step outside for ten minutes and come back in, and you will usually find the fragrance is still there. The second is the reeds. The first days after setting up are the strongest a reed diffuser ever is, because fresh dry reeds wick eagerly and every surface is new. That settles to a steadier, quieter level within a week or two, which is normal behaviour rather than decline. Flip the reeds, then judge it on how it smells when you come in from outside.
If nothing is faulty, is there anything free I can do that actually helps?
Yes, and it is worth doing before you spend anything at all. Move the bottle to the part of the room you genuinely occupy rather than the part that looks best in photographs, because in a passive system you have to come to the fragrance. Put it at roughly seated or lying nose height instead of on the floor or a low shelf. Keep it out of the direct path of a ceiling fan, an AC vent, a door or an open window, all of which carry scented air away faster than the reeds can replace it. Flip the reeds weekly. Together those changes can make a noticeable difference and cost nothing. What they cannot do is convert a passive object into an active one, so the far corner of the room will stay quiet.
