Founder Diaries · Diwali 2026 · 10–25 Gifts
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 11 min read Updated August 2026
Every year, from about the middle of the festive season, we get the same message in slightly different words: I have a list of names, I have a number per head, tell me what to buy. Ten names, fifteen, twenty-five. And almost every one of those messages treats the problem as a pricing problem, which it is not. The real risk when you buy in quantity is not paying too much. It is ending up with ten or twenty-five identical gifts that are all quietly wrong. This page is about how to avoid that, with the arithmetic done honestly at ₹449 and ₹379 a head.
Quick answers — read this first
At ₹500 a head, buy one of two things: the Sandalwood Scented Candle or the Smoked Oudh Scented Candle at ₹449, or a message-free jar candle at ₹379 — Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks.

The arithmetic: ten at ₹449 is ₹4,490. Ten at ₹379 is ₹3,790. Twenty-five at ₹449 is ₹11,225. Twenty-five at ₹379 is ₹9,475. Those are ordinary shelf prices; there is no bulk rate at SOSA to quote you.

The honest gap: there is no SOSA reed diffuser under ₹749 and no machine under ₹899, so on a ₹500-a-head list the reed is simply not available. If you can move to ₹749 a head, Morning Freshness changes the category of the gift entirely — six to eight weeks of scent instead of an evening.

Before you order: for anything above roughly twenty-five units, write to us through the contact page before you order. Availability by scent varies, and it is better to ask than to assume.
The short answer
Short answer: for ten gifts under ₹500 each, buy ten of the same thing. The Sandalwood Scented Candle at ₹449 is the strongest single choice — a named material, a register nobody objects to, and a total of ₹4,490 for ten. If the number has to come down, ten Bookshop jar candles at ₹379 is ₹3,790.
The three rules that actually protect a quantity buyer: buy identically within a tier, so nobody in the room can compare and find themselves at the bottom of it; choose a low-polarisation scent, because at ten or twenty-five recipients you are buying for an average person rather than a known one; and ask before ordering, because availability by scent varies and a large single-scent order is harder than a large mixed-scent one.
What SOSA does not have: no published bulk rate, no discount band, no minimum order, no custom branding, no gift set, no gift wrap and no gift card. The prices on this page are the ordinary prices. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact we state, and at ten units your order clears it comfortably.
Straight answer
I need ten Diwali gifts under ₹500 each. What should I actually buy, and what does it come to?
1. Buy ten of the same thing, and decide which thing once. The single most common mistake on a list of ten is buying eight of one item and two of something nicer, because two names felt more important on the day. Those two people are usually delighted and the other eight now know exactly where they stand. Ten identical gifts is not laziness; it is the only version of this that cannot embarrass anybody.

2. At ₹500 a head, the shortlist is short. Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh at ₹449, the four message-free jar candles at ₹379, wax melts at ₹474, a mug at ₹474, a 3ml attar at ₹379–₹399, or a car perfume at ₹449–₹509. That is the whole shelf. There is no reed diffuser and no diffuser machine below the line.

3. The arithmetic, plainly. Ten at ₹449 is ₹4,490. Ten at ₹379 is ₹3,790. The gap between the two tiers across ten people is ₹700, which is less than most people expect and is usually the easiest ₹700 in the whole budget to find. Fifteen, twenty and twenty-five are worked out in the table further down.

4. Choose the least polarising scent, not your favourite one. You are not buying for a person you know; you are buying for the average of ten households. Woody and quiet travels furthest. Strongly floral, strongly gourmand and anything with a joke printed on it does not, which is why none of the relationship-message candles appear anywhere on this page.

5. Ask before you order anything large. There is no bulk programme to enrol in and no rate to negotiate, but availability by scent does vary, and a large single-scent order is harder to fill than a large mixed-scent one because each scent is stocked separately. For anything above roughly twenty-five units, write to us through the contact page before you order. It is better to ask than to assume.

Everything here is alcohol-free, phthalate-free and made in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: ten ₹449 candles is ₹4,490; ten ₹379 candles is ₹3,790. Buy them identically, pick a scent nobody argues with, and if the list grows past twenty-five, write to us through the contact page first. There is no reed under ₹749, so at this per-head figure the reed is not on the table.
SOSA Bookshop scented jar candle
The quantity workhorse
Message-free jar candles ₹379 each
Four scents — Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings and Evening Walks — hand-poured soy, 80g, roughly fifteen to eighteen hours of burn, and nothing printed on the glass. That last detail is the reason they are the right candle for a list of names you do not know intimately. Ten of them is ₹3,790; the two-pack at ₹664 doubles the burn time if the per-head figure can stretch.

The real risk is not the price — it is ten identical wrong gifts

Read a hundred articles about buying gifts in quantity and ninety-five of them are about money: how to get the unit cost down, which band you fall into, what the total works out at. That is a reasonable thing to care about and it is not the thing that goes wrong. What goes wrong is that all ten of them land badly at once. A single bad gift to a single person is a small, private event. Ten copies of the same bad gift, handed out in the same week to people who talk to each other, is a much larger and much more public one — and no discount rescues it. The three cards below are the whole of my advice on this, and none of them costs anything.

1
PROTECTION ONE · UNIFORMITY
Buy identically within a tier, so nobody can compare
SOSA scented jar candleThe ₹449 tier₹449The moment two people on your list receive different things, the gift stops being a gift and becomes a ranking. This happens by accident far more often than by intent: you buy eight, then two more names appear, then the shop is out of the scent you bought and you take the nearest one. By the time it is all handed over you have created a small hierarchy that everyone can read in about a second. Decide your tier, buy the whole tier identically, and if you genuinely need two tiers, make them far enough apart that nobody mistakes them for a judgement — a team of twenty at one figure and three direct reports at another is legible; nineteen at ₹379 and one at ₹449 is just awkward.
The test: if two recipients put their gifts side by side on a table, does anything about the pair need explaining?
2
PROTECTION TWO · LOW POLARISATION
Choose the scent an average household accepts
SOSA Misty Mornings scented jar candleMisty Mornings₹379When you buy for one person you can be specific, and specificity is what makes a gift feel considered. When you buy for ten you are buying for a statistical household, and specificity becomes a liability. Anti-floral is a common and firmly held position. Gourmand scents divide a room faster than anything else we make. Anything explicitly religious or explicitly romantic is wrong for a list. The quiet, woody, faintly resinous register is the one that fewest people push away — which is exactly why Sandalwood and Smoked Oudh at ₹449 are the two I recommend most often at this figure. If the budget moves up to the reed line, the same logic points at Evening Calm at ₹799, the softest thing we make at 8.9 on our strength scale, and away from Fresh Brew at 9.5, which is superb for a coffee lover and the least safe thing to hand to a stranger.
The test: could you name three people you know who would actively dislike this? If yes, it is the wrong scent for a list.
3
PROTECTION THREE · ASK FIRST
Availability by scent varies, so write before a large order
SOSA Evening Walks scented jar candleEvening Walks₹379Here is the structural fact nobody tells quantity buyers, and it matters more than any rate card. Each scent is stocked separately, which means a large order in one single scent is a harder thing to fill than a large order spread across several. That is true of the candles and it is true of the five reeds. A buyer who will accept an assortment has far more room than a buyer who needs twenty-five identical bottles of one thing. I am deliberately not going to print a stock number here, because it changes daily and a number on a page is out of date the week after it is published — but the shape of the constraint is worth knowing before you build your plan around one scent. For anything above roughly twenty-five units, write to us through the contact page before you order. There is nothing to negotiate and no terms to quote; it is simply better to ask than to assume.
The test: if your plan depends on one scent and one scent only, that is the plan to check before you place it, not after.

The arithmetic, done honestly at ₹449 and ₹379 a head

These are ordinary shelf prices multiplied by the number of names on your list. I want to be exact about what that sentence means, because quantity pages elsewhere are frequently vague about it: SOSA has no published bulk rate, no discount band, no minimum order and no lead-time scheme. Nothing on this page is a special price, and if you order ten you pay ten times the price of one. The reason the arithmetic is still worth printing is that most people planning a list of ten or twenty-five have never actually written the multiplication down, and the totals are almost always lower than the figure they were bracing for.

Two figures do the work at this end of the range. ₹449 buys the Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh scented candle, which are the two strongest-looking things on the sub-₹500 shelf because both lead with a named material rather than a mood. ₹379 buys any of the four message-free jar candles. The distance between the two tiers is ₹70 a head, which across ten people is ₹700 and across twenty-five is ₹1,750. Knowing that number is usually enough to settle the decision in one sitting.

One more piece of arithmetic that people miss. Free shipping starts at ₹499, so a single ₹379 candle does not clear it — but no quantity order ever fails to. At ten units you are well past the threshold on either tier, which means shipping stops being a variable in your planning entirely. It is the one logistics fact I will state, and it is genuinely useful here: the total in the table below is the total.

The worked totals
Ten to twenty-five people, at the two figures that matter
People At ₹379 · jar candle At ₹449 · Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh At ₹664 · two-pack Difference, ₹379 to ₹449

15 people ₹5,685 ₹6,735 ₹9,960 ₹1,050
20 people ₹7,580 ₹8,980 ₹13,280 ₹1,400
25 people ₹9,475 ₹11,225 ₹16,600 ₹1,750

The SOSA principle
A discount protects your budget. Uniformity protects your recipients.
Only one of those two is visible to the people receiving the gift, and it is not the one on the invoice.

The honest gap: there is no reed diffuser under ₹749

I would rather say this early and plainly than let you read four hundred words hoping. The cheapest SOSA reed diffuser is Morning Freshness at ₹749 for 50ml, and there is no reed at any size below it. The cheapest diffuser machine is the Boond at ₹899. If your per-head figure is ₹500, a reed diffuser is not available to you, and any page that suggests otherwise is either quoting a price that does not exist or selling you something that is not a reed. The sub-₹500 shelf is real and it is good, but it is a different category of object.

The difference is duration, and it is worth being exact about it. A ₹379 jar candle is 80g of soy and roughly fifteen to eighteen hours of burn — the two-pack at ₹664 is roughly thirty to thirty-six. That is one or two very pleasant evenings. A 50ml reed at ₹749 runs six to eight weeks continuously, without being lit, without being watched, and without anybody having to remember it. At ₹500 a head you are buying an evening; at ₹749 you are buying most of a season. Whether that upgrade is worth ₹250 or ₹370 a head is genuinely your call and depends on the list — but you should make it knowing what the two figures buy, rather than discovering it afterwards.

And a word for the gift you are probably replacing, because I do not think this argument is worth making dishonestly. Mithai is not a lazy choice; it is a ritual one. For a first visit to somebody's elders, for a household where sweets are the expected form of the greeting, or for a small team that will actually sit down and eat together, a box of sweets is correct and a candle is a substitution nobody asked for. Where the case for a candle or a reed gets strong is the other situation entirely: a list of ten or twenty-five households that will each receive several identical boxes in the same week, where a fourth one is not a gift so much as an arrival.

Nobody on a list of twenty-five remembers what you spent. Everybody remembers whether they got the same thing as the person next to them.

What to buy for ten under ₹500, in order

In the order I would actually place the order, with the totals for ten alongside. The last row is the gap, stated as a row rather than buried in a footnote, because on a page about buying in quantity the thing we cannot sell you is as useful as the things we can.

Ten gifts under ₹500 each — what to buy and what it comes to
Buy What it is Why it works on a list Unit · ten
1. Sandalwood Scented Candle The named-material candle — quiet, woody, no message on the glass The lowest-polarisation thing on the shelf, and it reads as chosen ₹449 · ₹4,490
2. Smoked Oudh Scented Candle The same tier, a deeper register — oudh, stated by name When the list skews towards people who like something with weight ₹449 · ₹4,490
3. Bookshop / Cozy Corner / Misty Mornings / Evening Walks 80g soy jar candles, message-free, roughly 15–18 hours The workhorse tier — buy one scent for the whole list, not four ₹379 · ₹3,790
4. Jar candle two-pack Two jars, roughly 30–36 hours between them The honest way to raise the tier without leaving the candle ₹664 · ₹6,640
5. Ask, above roughly 25 units One message through the contact page before you place the order Availability by scent varies; single-scent is harder than mixed No terms quoted
No reed under ₹749: the honest gap The reed line starts at ₹749 and the machines at ₹899. Below that there is no reed diffuser at any size If the per-head figure can reach ₹749, you move from one evening to 6–8 weeks. Said plainly rather than worked around ₹749 · ₹7,490
Honest notes for quantity buyers: there is no published bulk rate, discount band, GST arrangement, custom branding, minimum order or lead-time scheme at SOSA, and nothing on this page is a special price. There is no gift set, gift box, gift wrap, gift note or gift card. SOSA Evening Calm lavender and chamomile reed diffuser
If the per-head figure moves
Evening Calm 50ml ₹799
The safest thing to hand to somebody you do not know well: Kashmir lavender, real chamomile and a soft musk drydown, at 8.9 on our strength scale — deliberately the gentlest thing we make. Six to eight weeks from one bottle, six fibre reeds, refillable glass. Ten of them is ₹7,990, which is a different budget conversation from ₹4,490 and I would rather present it as one. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the cheapest way into the reed line and the lowest-polarisation option at volume.

A note from Sonal

I have been asked for a bulk rate perhaps two hundred times and I have never had one to give. For a long time that embarrassed me. It stopped when I noticed that the people asking for a rate almost never had a selection problem solved — they had a spreadsheet with a per-head cell in it and no idea what to put in the other column, and they were negotiating because negotiating felt like progress.

So this is what I would say instead, and it is the same thing I say on the phone. Write the multiplication down first. Ten at ₹449 is ₹4,490 and ten at ₹379 is ₹3,790, and once you see those two numbers next to each other the decision usually makes itself in under a minute. Then pick the quietest scent on the list rather than your own favourite, because you are buying for an average of ten households and your favourite is a specific taste. Then buy every single one of them the same.

And if the list is longer than twenty-five, please write to us through the contact page before you place it. Not because there is anything to arrange — there is not, and I will not pretend otherwise — but because each scent is stocked separately, and it takes one message to find out whether the plan you have built around a single scent is the plan you should build. Everything is made in Pune, and part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

I need ten Diwali gifts under ₹500 each — what should I buy?
Ten of the same thing. The Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh scented candle at ₹449 gives you a total of ₹4,490; a message-free jar candle at ₹379 gives you ₹3,790. Both are ordinary prices, not bulk prices. Buy one scent across the whole list rather than a mixture, so that nobody receiving one can compare it with anybody else's.
Does SOSA have a bulk rate or a discount for ten to twenty-five gifts?
No. There is no published bulk rate, discount band, GST invoicing scheme, custom branding, minimum order or lead-time arrangement, and I would rather say that than imply one exists. What we can do is help with selection and arithmetic, and answer a question before you order. For anything above roughly twenty-five units, write to us through the contact page first — availability by scent varies, and it is better to ask than to assume.
Can I get a reed diffuser for under ₹500 each if I buy ten?
No. The cheapest SOSA reed diffuser is Morning Freshness at ₹749 for 50ml and there is no reed at any size below that, at any quantity. The cheapest machine is the Boond at ₹899. Under ₹500 the real options are the ₹449 candles, the ₹379 jar candles, wax melts at ₹474, 3ml attars from ₹379 and car perfumes from ₹449. If the per-head figure can reach ₹749, ten reeds is ₹7,490 and you move from an evening of burn time to six to eight weeks.
Should I buy everybody the same scent or mix them?
Buy one scent for the whole tier if you can. Mixing scents feels thoughtful when you are placing the order and reads as randomness when it is handed over, because the recipients have no way of knowing why they got theirs. The one genuine argument for mixing is availability: each scent is stocked separately, so a large single-scent order is harder to fill than a large mixed one. If your list is big enough for that to matter, ask through the contact page before you order rather than after.
Is a candle or a reed diffuser better for a list of ten?
It depends entirely on the per-head figure, and the difference is duration rather than quality. A ₹379 jar candle is roughly fifteen to eighteen hours; the ₹664 two-pack is roughly thirty to thirty-six. A 50ml reed at ₹749 runs six to eight weeks without being lit or watched. Under ₹500 the candle is the honest answer because the reed does not exist there; from ₹749 the reed is the better gift for most lists, and Evening Calm at ₹799 is the safest of the five to give to somebody you do not know well.
