Three things specific to a penthouse on Diwali night, none of which appear in general home fragrance advice. City air comes in. With terrace doors open on Diwali, what enters is not neutral: in most Indian cities the outside air on that night carries smoke from crackers, other people's cooking and the general density of the festival, and it arrives at height, which is why a twentieth-floor terrace can smell stronger of the city than a ground-floor garden does. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. In a villa that usually means the entrance, the living room and the dining as one connected space, with the closed rooms handled separately and quietly.

Is one machine really enough for a whole penthouse floor?
For the connected interior, usually yes, and a penthouse is the layout where that is most likely to be true. Work out your own number rather than guessing: floor area times ceiling height gives cubic feet, and cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres, so 2,000 sq ft of open plan at a 10 ft ceiling is about 566 cubic metres and 2,500 sq ft is about 708, both comfortably inside the Vaayu's approximately 1000 cubic metre rating at Rs 11,999. Two things can make that number optimistic. A double-height section adds far more volume than its floor area suggests, since 600 sq ft at a 20 ft ceiling is about 340 cubic metres on its own, so add it properly rather than by floor area. And any room that stays behind a closed door - bedrooms, the study, the powder room - is not part of the volume and never will be, since no machine reaches through a door at any price. Should I close the terrace doors to keep the fragrance in?
Close them for comfort, never for fragrance. A room full of people on a warm Diwali evening gets stuffy quickly, and guests notice stale warm air far more than they notice a scent level, so if the room needs air it should get air - the fragrance is not worth defending at the cost of the evening. What the machine does well is keep replacing what leaves, which is precisely why a scheduled machine copes better with an evening of open doors than a candle or a spray does. What you should not do is either seal the flat to preserve a scent level, which makes the room unpleasant, or raise the intensity to fight the open door, which leaves the room far too strong the moment the doors are closed later. Start earlier so the reservoir is deep before the doors open, keep the setting gentle and constant, and let the terrace be the terrace. That is the whole approach, and it costs nothing to run.
Cracker smoke keeps coming in from outside. Can fragrance help with that?
Not in the way the question hopes, and we would rather be straight about it than sell you something on a false promise. We make no air-purification, filtration or health claims for home fragrance: a fragrance machine adds a scent to air, it does not clean it. Layering a register over genuine smoke does not remove the smoke, it produces a combination that a fresh nose reads immediately and reads as concealment, which is a worse impression than the smoke alone. The tools that actually work on this are the ordinary ones. Close the terrace doors when the outside air is heavy and open them again when it clears. Run the air-conditioning, which recirculates and cools the air already inside. Keep the internal fabric clean, because soft furnishings hold smoke the way they hold cooking. And keep your register gentle underneath all of it rather than raising it in response, since raising it during the heavy hour leaves you with a very strong room in the quiet hour afterwards.
Where do I put the machine in an open plan with no obvious corners?
Think in terms of the flow rather than the furniture. You want it low, inside the volume rather than at its edge, somewhere the air genuinely moves through - the passage from the entrance, or a low console between the entrance and the living area, works better than the far end of the room behind a sofa where nothing circulates. Then apply four exclusions. Not within a couple of metres of the fixed seating, because in an open plan somebody occupies the nearest sofa for the entire evening. Not in the direct draught of a split air-conditioner, which fires the output in one direction and leaves the rest thin. Not near the terrace doors, since output released there leaves the building. And never near a diya, a lamp or a candle, which in a penthouse tend to be on exactly the low consoles and window ledges that otherwise look like good machine positions. It also needs air moving around it, so a closed cabinet will not work, though a console with an open back and a gap will.
Does a penthouse need a stronger setting than a villa because it is more open?
No, and usually the opposite. Openness is what makes a coverage figure work rather than what defeats it: in a villa the rating is cut up by closed doors, while in a penthouse most of the volume is genuinely reachable, so the machine is doing the job it was rated for. What changes the effective level in a penthouse is heat and crowd rather than layout. These homes hold warmth, they get sun, and a Diwali crowd raises the temperature of the space by several degrees over an evening, which makes the air more mobile and carries the scent further than in the cool empty room you set the dial in. So the honest instruction is the same as everywhere else in this section, only more so: run below your ordinary weekday level, start from the middle of the afternoon so the volume is settled and even before anybody arrives, and then leave it alone. If you cannot smell anything at eight, that is your own adaptation talking, not the room.
