Founder Diaries · Commercial Scent Marketing
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 10 min read Updated August 2026
Almost every developer who asks this question gives us one number, and it is the wrong one. Three thousand square feet is a floor area, and a machine does not scent a floor area. It scents a volume of connected air, and a sales gallery is the one commercial space in Indian real estate where the height is deliberately generous, deliberately expensive and almost never mentioned. Change the ceiling from ten feet to eighteen and you have not changed the brief slightly. You have nearly doubled the job.
Quick answers — read this first
What size scent diffuser does a 3,000 sq ft sales gallery need? It depends entirely on the ceiling, and the arithmetic is worth doing before you shortlist anything. At a 10 ft ceiling, 3,000 sq ft is 30,000 cubic feet, which divided by 35.3 is about 850 cubic metres - inside one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, which is rated at roughly 1000 cubic metres of connected air. The same 3,000 sq ft at 14 ft is 42,000 cubic feet, about 1,190 cubic metres, which is past one unit. At 18 ft it is 54,000 cubic feet, about 1,530 cubic metres, which is comfortably past two thirds of a second unit as well. Same floor plate, three completely different answers. Measure the finished height before you do anything else.

Why does ceiling height matter so much in a sales gallery? Because a gallery is built tall on purpose. A developer selling a Rs 2 crore apartment does not put the model in a room with a nine-foot false ceiling; the volume is part of the pitch, and double-height entrances, exposed services and a mezzanine viewing gallery are normal. Every extra foot of height multiplies straight through the volume calculation, so a gallery is routinely one and a half to two times the air a same-sized office would hold. That is why builders who size a machine off square feet alone end up with a gallery that smells scented within three metres of the unit and of nothing at all by the model. Height is the variable developers forget.

Is one machine enough for a 3,000 sq ft sales gallery? Usually not, and not because of the total volume. A gallery is almost never one connected body of air. It is a reception, a model and display area, two to four closed meeting or negotiation rooms, and often a sample flat built inside the same shell with its own front door. A rating of about 1000 cubic metres assumes one connected volume, and no machine pushes scent through a closed door. Size the open front of house as one job, then treat each closed room as a separate small one - a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 or a reed diffuser from Rs 749 handles a meeting room far better than a bigger machine in the atrium ever will.
The short answer
Short answer: Do the arithmetic three times. 3,000 sq ft at 10 ft = 30,000 cu ft = about 850 cubic metres, which sits inside one Vaayu (Rs 11,999, about 1000 cubic metres connected). At 14 ft it is 42,000 cu ft = about 1,190 cubic metres, past one unit. At 18 ft it is 54,000 cu ft = about 1,530 cubic metres. Then split by door: a gallery with a reception, a model display, closed meeting rooms and a sample flat is not one volume. Aangan Rs 25,999 only where there is genuine ducted air handling. Sukoon Rs 1,899, reeds from Rs 749, registers from Rs 299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
My sales gallery is 3,000 sq ft. What do I actually buy, and how many units?
Five steps, and the first two decide the purchase. 1. Measure the height, not just the floor. Area in square feet multiplied by finished ceiling height in feet gives cubic feet; divide by 35.3 for cubic metres. At 10 ft: 3,000 x 10 = 30,000 cu ft = about 850m³. At 14 ft: 3,000 x 14 = 42,000 cu ft = about 1,190m³. At 18 ft: 3,000 x 18 = 54,000 cu ft = about 1,530m³. One floor plate, three answers, and the difference between them is bigger than the difference between any two machines on our price list. 2. Split it by door. A SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is rated at roughly 1000m³ of connected air, and a gallery is not one connected space. Take a typical 3,000 sq ft plan: 800 sq ft of reception at 14 ft (11,200 cu ft, about 317m³), 1,200 sq ft of model and display area at 18 ft (21,600 cu ft, about 612m³), four meeting rooms totalling 480 sq ft at 10 ft (4,800 cu ft, about 136m³) and a 520 sq ft sample flat at 10 ft (5,200 cu ft, about 147m³). The open front of house is 317 + 612 = about 929m³, which one Vaayu covers. The closed rooms are four separate small jobs. 3. Buy for the connected volume you actually have. One Vaayu for the open gallery; a Sukoon (₹1,899) with a water-based Hotel Collection register (from ₹299) or a reed diffuser (from ₹749) in each closed meeting room; the sample flat sized and set separately and more quietly than the gallery. 4. Only consider HVAC where there is HVAC. SOSA Aangan (₹25,999, approx 8,000-10,000 sq ft) is a ducted system, and it belongs in a gallery that has genuine ducted air handling reaching every zone - not in a shed with split units on the wall. 5. Set it low and lock it. A tall room needs the machine to reach, not to shout; start at the lowest usable setting for a full week before you judge anything. Send the plan and the section height to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

The arithmetic, done three times, because the ceiling decides it

Three things go wrong when a gallery is sized: the height is left out of the sum, the closed doors are left in it, and HVAC is specified for a building that does not have any.

Why this works
The same 3,000 sq ft, three different answers - and why
13,000 sq ft at 10 ft = 30,000 cu ft = about 850 cubic metres of air2The same plate at 14 ft = 42,000 cu ft = about 1,190 cubic metres - past one unit3At 18 ft = 54,000 cu ft = about 1,530 cubic metres. Height is the multiplier4Then split by door: open gallery on one Vaayu Rs 11,999, closed rooms separately
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The sum
Do it three times, at three heights, before you shortlist anything
The formula is not complicated and that is exactly why it gets skipped. Floor area in square feet multiplied by finished ceiling height in feet gives you cubic feet; cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives you cubic metres, which is the unit every coverage rating in this industry is quoted in. Run it three times for a 3,000 sq ft gallery. At a flat 10 ft ceiling: 3,000 x 10 = 30,000 cubic feet, and 30,000 / 35.3 = about 850 cubic metres. At 14 ft, which is an ordinary height for a gallery built inside a podium or a converted commercial shell: 3,000 x 14 = 42,000 cubic feet, and 42,000 / 35.3 = about 1,190 cubic metres. At 18 ft, which is what a purpose-built experience centre with a double-height entrance and a mezzanine actually measures: 3,000 x 18 = 54,000 cubic feet, and 54,000 / 35.3 = about 1,530 cubic metres. The floor plate never moved. The air went up by eighty per cent. A machine chosen off the first number and installed under the third will read as absent by the time a visitor reaches the model, and the developer will conclude that scenting does not work in large spaces, when what actually happened is that nobody multiplied by the height. Measure the finished height with a laser, in the room, at the tallest point and the lowest, and write both numbers down before you look at a single product page.
Tip: floor area buys you nothing - area x height / 35.3 is the only number a machine responds to.
2
The plan
A sales gallery is four volumes wearing one address
Every coverage figure ever published, ours included, assumes one connected body of air, and a sales gallery is designed to be the opposite of that. Walk a typical 3,000 sq ft plan. There is a reception and waiting zone of perhaps 800 sq ft under a 14 ft ceiling: 11,200 cubic feet, about 317 cubic metres. There is the model and display area, the tallest and most theatrical part of the building, perhaps 1,200 sq ft under 18 ft: 21,600 cubic feet, about 612 cubic metres. There are three or four closed meeting and negotiation rooms, because nobody discusses a payment plan in an open hall - say 480 sq ft in total at 10 ft, which is 4,800 cubic feet, about 136 cubic metres, behind doors that stay shut for forty minutes at a time. And there is very often a sample flat built inside the same shell, 520 sq ft at 10 ft, 5,200 cubic feet, about 147 cubic metres, with its own front door that the sales team closes behind each group. Add the two open zones and you get about 929 cubic metres, which one Vaayu (₹11,999) covers with a little room to spare. Add all four and you get about 1,212 cubic metres, which no single unit reaches, because three of those volumes are behind doors. This is the single most useful correction on the page: you are not buying for 3,000 square feet. You are buying for the largest connected volume, and then solving the closed rooms separately and cheaply.
3
The rung
What the three numbers actually mean at the till
If the open gallery works out under about 1000 cubic metres - which the 10 ft version does at 850, and the zoned 14 ft version usually does once the closed rooms come out of the sum - one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is the answer: waterless cold-air nebulising, freestanding or wall mounted, Bluetooth app and timer so the intensity is set once and locked, and no water tank to fill in a space that is being photographed all week. If the open volume genuinely runs past 1000 cubic metres, as it does at 1,190 or 1,530, the honest options are two Vaayu units placed at opposite ends of the connected space and zoned, or an HVAC system - and the HVAC route has a hard precondition. SOSA Aangan at ₹25,999 (approx 8,000-10,000 sq ft) and SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 (12,000-18,000 sq ft) are ducted nebulising systems, and they only make sense where there is genuine ducted air handling serving every zone you want scented. A great many Indian sales galleries are temporary structures on the plot with wall-mounted split units and no ductwork at all, and in those buildings an HVAC system has nothing to connect to. Closed meeting rooms are the cheap part: a Sukoon at ₹1,899 running a water-based Hotel Collection register from ₹299, or a reed diffuser from ₹749 where there is no socket and nothing to schedule.
Tip: HVAC is a duct decision before it is a budget decision - no ducts, no Aangan, whatever the floor area says.
The SOSA principle
Two galleries of exactly 3,000 square feet can need one machine or three, and the thing that decides it is not the budget or the brand. It is the section drawing.
Area x height / 35.3, then split the result by every door that closes. Everything else on this page is detail.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

My gallery has a double-height entrance but the rest is at ten feet. How do I calculate that?
In pieces, and then add them. Take the double-height entrance on its own - say 700 sq ft at 20 ft, which is 14,000 cubic feet, about 397 cubic metres - and take the flat-ceiling remainder separately, say 2,300 sq ft at 10 ft, which is 23,000 cubic feet, about 652 cubic metres. Added together that is roughly 1,049 cubic metres, marginally past one unit, and the honest read is that you are at the edge rather than comfortably inside it. Two things follow. First, if the two zones are genuinely open to each other, treat them as one volume and expect to be at the top of a single machine's range or to want a second. Second, do not put the machine in the tall entrance and hope it works backwards; place it where the connected air actually circulates, and send us the plan on WhatsApp if the shape is unusual.
Does an open gallery with big glass and constant door opening need a bigger machine?
It needs a realistic one, which is not the same as a bigger one. Air exchange is the real variable in a sales gallery: a door that opens every ninety seconds on a Sunday, a glazed south face that heats the volume through the afternoon, and often a deliberately generous fresh-air rate to keep a crowded hall comfortable. All of that removes scented air faster than a sealed office would, and the instinct is to turn the machine up to compensate. Resist it. A higher setting produces a strong cloud near the unit and still nothing at the far end, because the problem is turnover, not output. The correct responses are placement in the path of the air rather than in a corner, a schedule that starts twenty to thirty minutes before the gallery opens so the volume is evenly loaded rather than freshly dosed, and a second unit if the connected volume genuinely exceeds one machine's range.
Can I just use several small ultrasonic diffusers instead of one Vaayu?
In an open gallery of this size, no, and it is worth being specific about why. An ultrasonic like the Sukoon at Rs 1,899 or the Megh at Rs 3,499 puts a fine water mist into the air, and its useful reach is a single enclosed room. Scatter six of them across an 18 ft hall and you do not get one even signature - you get six local clouds, six different fill levels, six moments when somebody forgets to top one up, and a visitor who walks through three noticeably different intensities between the door and the model. There is also the practical matter of water in a space that is being photographed and walked by clients all week. Ultrasonics are the right tool for the closed meeting rooms, the sample flat bedroom and the cabin, and the wrong tool for the atrium. Use each machine for the volume it was built for.
We have a temporary gallery that will be demolished in eighteen months. Does that change the answer?
It changes the mounting, not the sizing. The arithmetic is identical whether the building is permanent or a marketing structure on the plot, and so is the connected-volume rule. What changes is that you should keep everything freestanding and portable: the Vaayu runs freestanding or wall mounted on a DC 12V/1A 5W mains supply, so it can sit on a plinth or a console rather than being cut into anything, and it moves to the next project intact when this one closes. This is also the strongest argument against specifying a ducted HVAC system for a temporary gallery even when the floor area suggests one - a ducted system is an installation, and installations do not travel. Tell us on WhatsApp that the structure is temporary and we will size it as a portable job from the start.
Will scenting the gallery help us sell more apartments?
We will not tell you that, and we would be sceptical of anyone who does. What the evidence on ambient scenting supports is that people evaluate a pleasant, appropriately scented space and the service delivered in it more positively, stay in it a little longer, and recall it more strongly afterwards, at moderate effect sizes. Those are real and worth having in a building whose entire job is a first impression. What the evidence does not support is any claim about sales, conversion, price achieved or time to close, and a home purchase in the two to five crore range is a months-long decision involving location, layout, approvals, financing and family. Scent is a finishing layer on a well-run gallery. It is not a lever on the sale, and a gallery with poor ventilation or a damp smell has a building problem that no machine on our price list solves.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems run water-based fragrance; the Vaayu and the HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the two formats are not interchangeable. Made in India.
