Founder Diaries · Reed Diffusers · Reed Count
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Most people buy one reed diffuser, put six reeds in it, and then move it around the house wondering why it is perfect in the bedroom and either invisible or overwhelming everywhere else. It is the same bottle each time. What changes is the room — its volume, whether it is sealed or connected to three other spaces, and how much soft furnishing is quietly absorbing the fragrance. This guide gives a reed count for every room in an ordinary Indian flat, and the reasoning behind each number so you can adapt it to a flat that does not look like the one I imagined.
Quick answers — read this first
The short version by room: bathroom 3 · nursery 3 · bedroom 4–6 · study or home office 4–6 · entryway 4–6 · kitchen 6 · living room 6–8 · open living-dining 6–8 in two bottles, not one.

It is volume, not floor area. A room with a high ceiling, or one whose door stays open onto a passage, behaves like a much larger room than its floor plan suggests.

Soft furnishing eats fragrance. A curtained, carpeted, upholstered bedroom needs a reed or two more than a tiled room of exactly the same size.

The ceiling: past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open space, no reed count is the answer. Use two bottles at opposite ends, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899.
The short answer
Short answer: three reeds in a small sealed room such as a bathroom or nursery, four to six in a bedroom, study or entryway, six in a kitchen, and six to eight in a living room. Six is the count each SOSA composition is dosed for, so read those numbers as a step up or down from a calibrated default rather than as a fixed rule.
The mechanism: a reed diffuser releases at a rate set by its exposed reed surface, and the room decides what that rate feels like. The same release into a small, sealed, low-ceilinged room accumulates; into a large, connected, curtained one it dilutes and is absorbed. Sizing the count is simply matching a fixed output to a variable volume.
Shop: for a flat with rooms of different sizes, a duo is the sensible purchase — Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 for two 50ml, or Day & Night at ₹1,498. Single bottles from ₹749. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
How many reed diffuser sticks should I use for my room?
1. Small sealed rooms — bathroom, nursery, walk-in wardrobe, box room: three reeds. Little air, barely replaced, so fragrance accumulates through the day. Six reeds is the commonest cause of a bathroom that people describe as overpowering.

2. Ordinary bedrooms and studies: four to six. Start at four if the door stays closed and the room is heavily curtained and carpeted; go to six if it is airy, tiled, or the door is open to a passage all day.

3. Entryways: four to six, placed on the console by the door. An entrance is not a room you sit in — you want a greeting, not a residence. Four reeds of a rounded composition does more here than eight of a sharp one.

4. Kitchens: six, and never while you are cooking. Run the extractor, open a window for ten minutes, close up, and give it half an hour before the fragrance is in charge again. Fragrance layered over live cooking makes a third smell nobody designed.

5. Living rooms: six to eight, depending on whether the space is closed off or opens into a dining area, a passage and a balcony. Eight reeds costs you bottle life roughly in proportion — about five to six weeks on a 50ml rather than six to eight.

6. Open living-dining, or anything past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected space: two bottles, not more reeds. Output per bottle is fixed. The only way to raise the total in a large space is another source — two 50ml at opposite ends beat one 130ml in the middle every time.

Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: 3 reeds in a bathroom or nursery, 4–6 in a bedroom or study, 6 in a kitchen, 6–8 in a living room, and two bottles rather than one for an open living-dining. Ceiling height and soft furnishing move every one of those numbers by a reed.
SOSA Morning Freshness Malabar lemon peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus reed diffuser
The small-room composition
SOSA Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon, peppermint & Nilgiri eucalyptus ₹749 / 50ml
9.0 on the SOSA internal strength scale and the one I put in bathrooms, kitchens and home offices — cold, sharp and clean rather than perfumed, which is exactly what a small wet room wants. Because it reads as clarity rather than as scent, it tolerates a small volume of air better than a warm or floral composition does; three reeds in a compact bathroom is usually plenty. Alcohol-free and phthalate-free on a heat-stable CCT base, six fibre reeds supplied. 130ml ₹1,249 for 14–18 weeks.

Part one — what "room size" really means for a passive diffuser

Floor area is the number everyone reaches for and the least useful of the three that matter. A reed diffuser is filling a volume of air, that volume is being exchanged at some rate you did not choose, and part of what it releases is being absorbed by everything soft in the room. Two rooms with identical floor plans can want counts three reeds apart because of those three variables. Get them in view and the table in Part two stops being a list to obey and becomes a starting point you can adjust with confidence.

1
VARIABLE ONE · VOLUME
Ceiling height turns a small room into a large one
Fragrance does not stay politely at nose level; it occupies the whole volume of the room, and older flats, converted bungalows and duplex drawing rooms have a great deal more of it above your head than a modern apartment does. A room with a noticeably high ceiling behaves like a room a size or two larger, which is why the same bottle that fills a compact new-build bedroom disappears in an old Kolkata or Chennai sitting room of the same floor area. The practical correction is a reed, sometimes two — and, more importantly, height: stand the bottle at waist-to-chest level rather than low on a coffee table, so what it releases starts nearer the part of the room you actually occupy. A ceiling fan is not a substitute; on high speed it disperses fragrance so thoroughly that nothing registers anywhere.
The correction: high ceiling, add a reed and raise the bottle. Do not add three reeds and leave it on the floor.
2
VARIABLE TWO · CONNECTEDNESS
An open door makes two rooms into one
SOSA Fresh Brew reed diffuserFresh Brew₹849 · 9.5/10This is the variable people forget entirely. A 150 sq ft living room that opens into a dining area, a passage and a balcony is not a 150 sq ft room — it is one lobe of a connected space that might be twice that, and the diffuser is trying to scent all of it. The reed count you need follows the connected volume, not the room you are standing in. The same logic works in your favour: a bedroom whose door is closed at night concentrates beautifully at four reeds. In an Indian flat this changes by the hour, which is why the honest recommendation for open-plan homes is not a heroic reed count but a second source. Two bottles at opposite ends of a connected space put fragrance where one point source never will, and each can be set to its own count.
The test: stand at the doorway and look at how far you can see. That is roughly the space your bottle is being asked to fill.
3
VARIABLE THREE · ABSORPTION
Soft furnishing quietly takes its share
Curtains, rugs, upholstery, cushions, a made bed and a wardrobe of clothes all absorb fragrance molecules and release them slowly. In a heavily furnished room that is not entirely a loss — the room holds a low, soft version of the scent even away from the bottle — but the air itself reads quieter, which is why a plush bedroom can feel weaker than a bare tiled bathroom of the same size at the same count. Tiled, hard-surfaced rooms need fewer reeds; textile-heavy rooms need more. Bathrooms sit at the far end of this scale, which is the second reason three reeds is usually right in one: small volume and almost nothing to absorb. It is also why the first fortnight in a newly furnished room feels weaker than the third — the textiles take their share first.

Part two — the room-by-room reed table

This is the table I would hand a friend moving into a new flat. The sizes are rules of thumb for an ordinary Indian home rather than measurements — use the room descriptions rather than the numbers if your flat does not match. The strength figures quoted are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds; our scale, not an industry standard.

Reeds by room
Every room in an ordinary flat, with a count and a reason
Room Typical size Reeds Composition that suits it Why this count
Guest bathroom ★ Small, sealed, hard surfaces 3 Morning Freshness · 9.0 · ₹749 Little air and nothing to absorb — six reeds accumulates by evening
Nursery or box room Small, door usually closed 3 Evening Calm · 8.9 · ₹799 Deliberately faint; keep the bottle out of reach and on a tray
Master bedroom Medium, curtained and carpeted 4–6 Evening Calm · 8.9 · ₹799 Four with the door shut, six if it opens onto a passage all day
Study or home office Medium, often sealed with AC 4–6 Mountain Breeze · 9.4 · ₹849 Enough to register at the desk, not enough to distract; keep it clear of the AC
Entryway or foyer Small but open to everything 4–6 Garden Bloom · 8.9 · ₹799 You want a greeting on arrival, and passing traffic does the distributing
Kitchen Medium, high air exchange 6 Morning Freshness · 9.0 · ₹749 Air is replaced constantly — but never diffuse over live cooking
Closed living room Medium to large, well furnished 6–8 Fresh Brew · 9.5 · ₹849 Eight when hosting, six the rest of the time — the extra costs weeks
Open living-dining Beyond 250–300 sq ft connected 6–8 each, in two bottles Warmth & Bloom duo · ₹1,598 One point source cannot cover it at any count; two sources can
The honest caveat: these sizes are working rules of thumb from our own testing and customer correspondence, not measurements, and ceiling height, ventilation, furnishing and season move every row. Two more things the table cannot show. First, if you run two bottles in one connected space, the compositions must share a note or you get a seam where they meet — Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus; Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth. Second, a bigger bottle is not a bigger room: a 130ml at the same count lasts 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 and projects about the same.

Three ways to cover a flat
The SOSA principle
Set the count to the air the room has to fill, not to the size of the bottle.
The same 50ml is a nursery diffuser at three reeds and a living-room diffuser at eight. What you are adjusting is not the product; it is the match between a fixed output and a very variable volume of air.

Part three — sizing your own room without a tape measure

You do not need a floor plan for this. Pace the room heel to toe, count the steps along two walls and multiply — a pace is close enough to a foot for a decision that comes in whole reeds. Then apply the two adjustments from Part one: add a reed for a high ceiling, and add a reed if the room stays open to the rest of the flat. Subtract one if the room is small, sealed and hard-surfaced. That arithmetic will land you within a reed of right almost every time, and the last reed is the one your nose should decide rather than my table.

Then set it and leave it alone for a week. This is where most people go wrong: they judge the room in the first hour, when a new bottle is spiking as dry reeds saturate and the top notes leave, and they judge it with a nose that has been in the house all day. Two habits fix both errors. Do the doorway test — step outside for fifteen minutes, come back in and notice what greets you — and ask anyone who visits, without prompting them, whether the room smells of anything. Your olfactory system reports change rather than constants and adapts hardest at home, so in your own flat you are close to the least reliable witness available. Guests are better instruments than any measurement you can take.

Two boundaries to hold on to while you are experimenting. The first is the honest ceiling of the format: past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume, adding reeds stops being the answer, because output per bottle is fixed and you are asking a point source with no propulsion to reach further than it can. Two bottles raise the total; one loud bottle does not. The second is that a large room is not solved by a large bottle. A 130ml at ₹1,349 holds more oil and lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8, which is a genuinely good reason to buy it — but at six reeds it projects about the same as the 50ml beside it. And if what you want is a big room scented on demand, before guests arrive rather than continuously, then the format is wrong rather than the count: a Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft, runs 16–18 hours on low and comes with three 15ml Hotel Collection scents. Reed oil never goes into it, and its water-based fragrance never goes into a reed bottle.

You are not scenting a floor plan. You are scenting the air above it, and half of that air is borrowed from the next room.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — what to buy for your floor plan

The same advice arranged by home rather than by room, because most people are buying for a whole flat at once and want to know how many bottles it takes. Each row assumes you will set the counts room by room from the table above.

The floor-plan edit

Honest notes for buyers: room sizes and coverage figures on this page are SOSA's working guidance from in-house testing and customer correspondence, not laboratory measurement; ceiling height, ventilation, furnishing, temperature and season all move them. Bottle life of 6–8 weeks for a 50ml and 14–18 weeks for a 130ml assumes six reeds, weekly flipping, no draught and no direct sun — running eight reeds in a living room shortens it roughly in proportion. Strength ratings are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard. Refills are oil only; reeds are not sold separately, and we suggest refreshing them every few months. The Megh at ₹3,499 is a runtime machine — about 100 hours a fill but only around 215 sq ft — and is never a coverage upgrade over a Sukoon. Reed oil never goes into a machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Stand bottles on a tray, out of sunlight, away from children and pets. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

When we were testing the range through a Pune summer, the same 50ml bottle went round my own flat for eight weeks — bathroom, bedroom, study, hall — and it behaved like four different products. That is the whole reason this table exists. The bathroom at six reeds was too much by the second evening. The hall at six reeds barely registered until I moved it onto the console by the door, and then it was exactly right.

I resisted publishing room sizes for a long time, because a square-foot number invites a false precision that this format does not have. A reed diffuser is not a machine with a rated coverage; it is a passive object whose performance depends on your ceiling, your curtains, whether your doors are shut and how often somebody walks past. So treat the sizes here as descriptions of a room, not as a specification.

The one number I will stand behind is the ceiling. Past roughly 250 to 300 square feet of connected open space, reeds are the wrong tool, and I would rather say that than sell you a third bottle for a hall that wanted a machine. Everything we make is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C heat and 85 per cent humidity, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How many reed sticks for a bedroom?
Four to six. Start at four if the door is usually closed and the room is curtained and carpeted; go to six if it stays open to a passage or the room is airy and hard-surfaced. Evening Calm at ₹799 is built for bedrooms. Keep the bottle a few feet from the bedhead and clear of the AC.
How many reeds for a bathroom?
Three. A bathroom is a small sealed volume with hard surfaces and almost nothing to absorb fragrance, so it accumulates through the day — six reeds is the commonest reason a bathroom diffuser is described as overpowering. Morning Freshness at ₹749 reads as clean rather than perfumed in one.
How many reeds for a large living room?
Six to eight, and if the space runs open into a dining area or balcony, use two bottles rather than one. Eight reeds shortens a 50ml to roughly five to six weeks instead of six to eight. Past about 250–300 sq ft of connected space, no reed count covers it — that is the format's honest ceiling.
Should I use a bigger bottle for a bigger room?
Only for duration. A 130ml holds more oil and lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8, but at the same reed count it projects about the same as a 50ml. For a bigger room the answer is a second source — two 50ml at opposite ends beat one 130ml in the middle.
Can I put a reed diffuser in the kitchen?
Yes, at six reeds — Morning Freshness suits one — but never run it as a mask over live cooking. Fragrance layered onto cooking smells makes a third smell nobody designed. Extractor on, window open ten minutes, close up, then give it half an hour.
