A broker sends us a plan with a note: four separate zones, please advise how many machines. The plan shows a living and dining volume, a master suite behind a lobby door, a guest wing down a corridor with its own door, and a family lounge that used to be a servant's area. The instinct is that four zones means four machines, and it is a reasonable instinct because every coverage rating on the market is quoted against one connected volume. But a viewing has a property that a residence does not, and it changes the answer completely: during a viewing, every internal door in the flat is open, because you are showing the rooms.
Quick answers — read this first
How many diffusers does a property with four separated zones need? Usually one, if the doors between the zones can be opened an hour before the viewing. Coverage ratings assume one connected volume, so four sealed zones are four separate problems. But four zones in a 3,200 sq ft flat are four small problems: a 1,300 sq ft living and dining volume is about 368 cubic metres, a 600 sq ft master suite is about 170, a 700 sq ft guest wing is about 198, a 400 sq ft family lounge is about 113, and a 200 sq ft utility and staff area is about 57. Together that is about 907 cubic metres, inside one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 rated at roughly 1000 cubic metres - provided the doors are open so it is genuinely one volume.

Why does opening the doors matter more than buying a second machine? Because a door is the cheapest zone-merge in existence, and during a viewing the doors are open anyway. You cannot show a buyer a master suite through a closed door, so the zone boundaries that exist for the owner do not exist for the ninety minutes you care about. The only requirement is timing: the doors have to be open an hour before the buyer arrives, not as they walk through, so the air has actually mixed and settled. Open them as you arrive along with the windows, ventilate, clean, then close the windows, run the machine low and let the whole flat come to one even level.

When does a multi-zone property genuinely need two machines? Three cases. When the connected route is genuinely past roughly 1000 cubic metres even with the doors open - which at a ten-foot ceiling means a route past about 3,500 sq ft. When a zone on the route cannot be opened, because a tenant occupies it, an owner has locked it, or a door has to stay shut for security. And when the zones are on different floors with an enclosed staircase between them, which turns a stack into a barrier. Outside those three, a second machine at Rs 11,999 usually buys less than opening a door and starting an hour earlier, and we would rather say so.
The short answer
Short answer: Four separated zones is four small volumes, not one large one, and the fix is usually a door rather than a machine. In a 3,200 sq ft flat: living and dining 1,300 sq ft is about 368 cubic metres, master suite 600 sq ft about 170, guest wing 700 sq ft about 198, family lounge 400 sq ft about 113, utility and staff 200 sq ft about 57 - about 907 cubic metres in total at a ten-foot ceiling, inside one Vaayu at Rs 11,999 (roughly 1000 cubic metres) once the doors are open. Open them an hour before the viewing, not as the buyer walks through. Buy a second machine only when the connected route is genuinely past about 1000 cubic metres, a zone on the route cannot be opened, or an enclosed staircase separates the floors. The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
My listing has four separated zones. Do I need four machines, or two, or one?
Work through it in this order and the answer is usually one. 1. Measure each zone rather than the property. Take a 3,200 sq ft flat at a ten-foot ceiling. Living and dining with the foyer, 1,300 sq ft: 13,000 cubic feet, divided by 35.3, about 368 cubic metres. Master suite behind its lobby door, 600 sq ft: 6,000 cubic feet, about 170. Guest wing down a corridor, 700 sq ft: 7,000 cubic feet, about 198. Family lounge, 400 sq ft: 4,000 cubic feet, about 113. Utility and staff area, 200 sq ft: 2,000 cubic feet, about 57. Four or five zones, and the largest of them is 368 cubic metres - about a third of one machine's rating. 2. Add them up. That is about 907 cubic metres in total, which is inside a single SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, roughly 1000m³) - but only if it is one connected volume. 3. Open the doors, an hour early. This is the move. A viewing is not a residence: you cannot show a master suite through a closed door, so every internal door is open anyway. Open them when you arrive, along with the windows for cross-ventilation, then close the windows and run the machine low so the whole flat mixes and settles before the buyer is anywhere near it. Doors opened as the buyer walks through are doors opened too late. 4. Apply the route logic. The family lounge and the staff area are frequently not on the path at all, which takes about 170 cubic metres straight off the number. Route only, in this plan, is about 652 cubic metres. 5. Reeds where a door will be opened but not entered. A guest bathroom or a powder room takes a reed diffuser from ₹749 - no socket, nothing to schedule. 6. Buy the second unit only for the three honest cases. A connected route genuinely past about 1000m³; a zone on the route that cannot be opened because a tenant or an owner occupies it; or floors separated by an enclosed staircase with a door. Ventilate and clean every zone regardless, and never use fragrance over a musty room - that is a moisture matter for the owner to investigate and disclose. Four zones is four problems, and none of them is large

Three steps: measure the zones separately so you can see how small they are, merge them with the doors rather than with money, and know the three cases where a second machine is genuinely the right answer.

Why this works
Zones, merged: the sequence before any second machine
1Measure each zone alone - the biggest in a 3,200 sq ft flat is about 368 cu m2All five together at a 10 ft ceiling: about 907 cubic metres, inside one unit3Open every internal door an hour early - a viewing has no closed doors anyway4Second machine only for a sealed zone, a route past 1000 cu m, or a stair door
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The measurement
Measure the zones and they stop looking intimidating
The reason four zones sounds like an expensive problem is that nobody has measured them. Do it and the picture inverts. Take a real 3,200 sq ft plan and break it the way the doors break it. The entrance foyer, living room and dining area together, 1,300 sq ft, is 13,000 cubic feet at a ten-foot ceiling, which divided by 35.3 is about 368 cubic metres. The master suite behind its own lobby door - bedroom, dressing, bathroom - at 600 sq ft, is 6,000 cubic feet, about 170 cubic metres. The guest wing, two bedrooms and a shared bathroom down a corridor with a door, at 700 sq ft, is 7,000 cubic feet, about 198 cubic metres. A family lounge or home theatre of 400 sq ft is 4,000 cubic feet, about 113 cubic metres. Utility, staff room and a service passage at 200 sq ft is 2,000 cubic feet, about 57 cubic metres. Five zones, and the largest of them is about 368 cubic metres against a machine rated at roughly 1000. Add them: 1,300 plus 600 plus 700 plus 400 plus 200 is 3,200 sq ft, which is 32,000 cubic feet, about 907 cubic metres, and the five figures above add back to the same total, which is how you check you have not double-counted a corridor. The property is not big. It is fragmented. Those are two entirely different problems, and only one of them is solved by spending more.
Tip: the largest of five zones in a 3,200 sq ft flat is about 368 cubic metres - roughly a third of one machine's rating.
2
The merge
A viewing is the one occasion when every door is already open
This is where a broker's situation differs fundamentally from a homeowner's, and it is why the villa coverage guides give a different answer from this page. In a residence, zone doors are closed most of the time: the master suite is private, the guest wing is unused, the family lounge is shut when nobody is in it, and a permanent scenting design has to respect all of that as a standing condition. A viewing has no standing condition. You cannot sell a master suite through a closed door. Every internal door in that flat is going to be open, because opening them is the job. So the four zones that exist on the plan do not exist during the ninety minutes you are buying air for - provided you open them at the right time. That is the whole discipline. Doors opened as you walk the buyer through are doors opened too late: the zone behind them is a pocket of unmixed, unscented air that the buyer steps into at the exact moment they are paying attention to it. Doors opened an hour earlier, with the machine running low, give you one connected volume of about 907 cubic metres that has had time to even out. Build the door-opening into the same routine as the windows: arrive, open everything including cupboards, cross-ventilate hard, clean, pour water down every trap, close the windows, start the machine, and leave the internal doors open from that point until the buyer has gone. It costs nothing and it is worth more than a second machine.
3
The exceptions
Three cases where the second machine is the right call
We would rather name them precisely than leave the impression that one unit always works, because it does not. The first is arithmetic. If the connected route is genuinely past roughly 1000 cubic metres with the doors open, a second source is the honest answer, and at a ten-foot ceiling that means a route past about 3,500 sq ft, which is 35,000 cubic feet or about 991 cubic metres. Height pulls that threshold down fast: at twelve feet, 3,000 sq ft is 36,000 cubic feet, about 1,020 cubic metres, so a 3,000 sq ft flat with twelve-foot ceilings is already there. The second is a zone that cannot be opened. A tenant occupying two rooms, an owner who has locked a study, a strong room or a home office the seller will not open, a nanny asleep in a staff room: any of these is a genuine sealed volume, and if it is on the route the buyer walks it needs its own source. In practice that is more often a reed diffuser from ₹749 than a second machine, because it is a small volume and there may be no socket. The third is vertical separation with a door. Two floors joined by an open stair are one volume, as the duplex page in this section explains, but a stair with a door at the top is a barrier and the arithmetic resets on each side of it. Outside those three, adding a second Vaayu at ₹11,999 buys less than opening a door and starting an hour earlier - and if you do run two, run the same register at the same level on both, because two fragrances meeting in a corridor is the fastest way to make a flat smell deliberately perfumed, which reads as concealment.
Tip: if you do end up running two machines, run the same register at the same level - two scents meeting in a corridor is worse than one zone left alone.
The SOSA principle
Four zones is not a big property. It is a fragmented one - and fragmentation is cured by a door held open for an hour, not by a second machine.
Measure the zones separately, add them, open everything early, apply the route logic, and buy the second unit only for a sealed zone, a route past 1000 cubic metres, or a stair with a door.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

If I open all the doors, does the air actually mix, or does each room stay separate?
It mixes, but on the building's timescale rather than yours, which is the whole reason the hour matters. With doors open, air moves between rooms through ordinary pressure and temperature differences: the sunlit side of the flat is warmer than the shaded side, an air-conditioner in one room sets up a circulation, and a machine's own output creates gentle movement outward from the source. None of that is fast. A flat with the doors freshly opened is still five separate pockets ten minutes later, and it is roughly one volume after forty-five to sixty minutes with a source running quietly. That is why the standing advice across this bank is to start earlier rather than stronger. If you are ever forced to choose between an extra half hour and an extra setting, take the half hour every time.
The owner will not let me open the master bedroom until the buyer is at the door. What then?
Treat it as a genuinely separate zone and plan around it rather than fighting it. Air that room properly on your preparation visit, have it cleaned, check the bathroom traps and leave the cupboards open to breathe, then let it be closed until the buyer arrives. When it is opened, the buyer will be standing in scented passage air and looking into a clean, aired room, which reads perfectly well. What you should not do is compensate by turning the main machine up, because the effect of that lands entirely on the rooms that were already right. If the master suite is important enough to the sale and the owner is amenable, a reed diffuser on the dressing table from Rs 749 is a quiet way to give that zone its own low-level character without a socket, a cable or a machine anyone has to be told about.
Should each zone have a different fragrance, so the property feels layered?
No. Layering different registers across zones is an idea that sounds sophisticated on paper and fails in a corridor. A buyer walks from one zone to the next in a few seconds, and where two zones meet, both fragrances are present at once, which is neither of them. It also makes the scenting audible as a decision rather than as a condition of the property, and heavy or obviously designed scent in a viewing reads as concealment - the buyer starts wondering what is being managed. One register, one level, throughout everything on the route. The only place a different scent is normal is a washroom, which people mentally file as its own room, so a reed there does not need to match anything. Consistency is most of the effect and it is also what stops the fragrance being noticed at all.
Does a big open-plan flat need less than a compartmentalised one of the same size?
It needs the same volume served but it is a much easier job, and the difference shows up in how evenly it reads rather than in the size of the machine. An open-plan 3,200 sq ft flat is one connected volume of about 907 cubic metres from the moment you switch on, so a single source distributes through it steadily and the level is consistent from the entrance to the far window. The compartmentalised version is the same 907 cubic metres, but it only behaves like one volume after the doors have been open for a while, and until then it is five pockets at five different concentrations. Same machine, same setting, different preparation time. This is why the compartmentalised property benefits far more from starting an hour early than the open-plan one does, and why brokers who show both sometimes conclude the machine is inconsistent when what varies is the plan.
What if a zone has no socket for a machine at all?
It is a common situation in a vacant listing and it has a simple hierarchy of answers. First, check whether the zone genuinely needs its own source, because if a door can be opened an hour early it does not. Second, if it does, use reeds: a reed diffuser from Rs 749 needs no power, no cable and no schedule, which is exactly why it belongs in a room with no socket. Third, remember that the Vaayu is mains powered - DC 12V at about 5W, a very low draw, but mains all the same - so in a flat with the electricity disconnected it will not run anywhere, not just in that zone. That is a real constraint rather than a detail, and it deserves checking before you carry anything to a listing. WhatsApp us on +91 96192 18531 with the zone layout and the socket positions and we will tell you what actually works there.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint.
