Every showroom on a busy street or a mall concourse has the same first three metres: they smell of outside. The door opens, the air swaps, the door closes, and a minute later it happens again. No fragrance machine argues with a door that opens all day, and the ones that try end up too strong everywhere else.
Quick answers — read this first
How do constantly opening glass doors affect fragrance in an appliance store? They exchange the air near the threshold with the street or the mall many times an hour, so the first few metres inside the door never hold a fragrance for long, whatever machine is running. That is the defining fact of scenting retail and it has no fragrance solution. The floor deeper in, where the air stays, is what the machine is for; the door zone is accepted as a draught.

So where does the machine go, and what should I do about the door? Inward: high on a wall the AC supply crosses, well past the threshold zone and away from the door's line of draught, so the fragrance is released into air that stays in the room. Do nothing about the door except close it when you can. Judge the level from the specification table or the far displays, never from the doorway, and never turn the machine up to make the entrance smell of it.

Which machine, and what does it cost? One SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for a connected floor of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft, wall-mounted inward, waterless, with a timer and a key-lock so the door cannot tempt anyone to turn it up. A Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness reed at Rs 749-849 at the desk for a small studio. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music - SOSA makes no claim that it changes dwell time, footfall or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance.
The short answer
Short answer: a door that opens all day swaps the threshold air with the street every few minutes, so the first few metres inside will always smell of outside. Place the source inward on the supply side, judge the level from deeper on the floor, and accept the door zone as a draught. Turning up to reach it only over-scents the rest.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) wall-mounted well inside the floor for a connected area of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft; a Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) or Morning Freshness reed (₹749) at the desk, away from the door, for a studio under about 750 sq ft.
Next step: send a plan with the door, the desk and the AC grilles marked - ask for a showroom scenting plan and we will draw the threshold zone and say where the source belongs.

Straight answer
How do constantly opening glass doors change fragrance in an appliance store?
They make the first few metres of the floor a place where fragrance does not stay, and the honest thing to do about that is nothing. Here is the mechanism, because owners deserve to know why the entrance smells of the street no matter what they buy. A glass door on a busy frontage opens and closes dozens of times an hour. Each time, the pressure difference between inside and outside - the AC pushing out, the wind or the mall's own air pushing in - swaps a slab of air across the threshold. The zone inside the door, three to five metres deep on most floors and deeper on a windy corner, is therefore refreshed with outside air continually. Fragrance released into that zone leaves with it. The open door is the defining fact of scenting retail, and it has no fragrance solution. Not a stronger machine, not a second machine by the door, not a higher setting - each of those puts more fragrance into air that is on its way out and, because the same output also reaches the rest of the floor, over-scents the displays where the air does stay. The advisor at the desk ends up breathing a level nobody chose in order to make a doorway smell of something for thirty seconds at a time. So the rule is inward. Place the source well past the threshold zone, high on a wall the AC supply crosses, out of the door's line of draught, so the fragrance is released into air that circulates on the sales floor rather than air that is queuing to leave. The wall mount on the SOSA Vaayu is what makes that possible; the socket by the door is the worst place on the floor and the one most machines are found in. Then judge the level from where the air stays - the specification table, the far display kitchens - with the team at five in the afternoon, and lock it. The key-lock matters more on a busy-door floor than anywhere, because the door is a daily temptation to turn it up and levels on a shop floor only ever drift one way. Should the machine go near the entrance or deeper inside is this argument as a placement decision, and what customers should smell when they enter explains why the entrance being a draught is fine: the fragrance is noticed at the first display and forgotten by the specification table, and the door is not on that list. There is one thing you can do about the door, and it is not a fragrance thing. Close it when you can, keep the second leaf shut on a double door, and if there is a lobby or an airlock use it; a mall unit with a permanently open frontage is a harder case still, and the threshold zone is simply wider. Machine and price: one Vaayu at ₹11,999, waterless, wall-mounted inward, timer and key-lock, for a connected floor of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft; a Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness reed at the desk, away from the door, for a studio. And the frame: fragrance is an interiors decision, like lighting or music. SOSA makes no claim that it changes dwell time, footfall, conversion or sales, no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish, and it is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction. The live kitchen and coffee counter stay unscented. Ask for a showroom scenting plan and mark the door and the desk on what you send.

The five facts about a door that opens all day

Five things a busy door does to the air, and what each one means for the plan. None of them is fixed by the intensity dial, and one of them is fixed by a door closer.

1
The exchange
Threshold air swaps with the street every few minutes
A single door opening moves a surprising amount of air, and a busy one opening fifty times an hour keeps a zone three to five metres deep in constant exchange with whatever is outside - traffic, a mall concourse, a food court. That zone will smell of outside. It will also, in the monsoon, feel damp and in the dry months carry dust, neither of which any fragrance addresses. What the zone will not do is hold a fragrance long enough for a visitor to notice it, because by the time it has arrived the air has been replaced. So the plan begins by drawing the threshold zone on the floor plan and writing "draught" across it. Nothing scented goes in it, no level is judged from it, and no owner stands in it deciding the machine is too weak. What customers should smell when they enter is the reassurance: the first impression is made at the first display, not on the doormat.
Test: hold a tissue at chest height a metre inside the door with the door shut, then have someone open it. The lean you see is the zone.
2
Placement
Inward, on the supply side, out of the line of draught
Once the threshold zone is drawn, the source goes on the far side of it - and not merely past it, but out of the line the draught follows across the floor. On most shopfronts the door's air travels in a straight run towards the AC return or the back of house, and a source mounted on that run is releasing into a corridor of moving outside air. The Vaayu wall-mounts, so it can go high on a side wall the supply grilles blow across, where the release joins the conditioned air that circulates on the floor rather than the air passing through. Where the machine goes on a central-AC floor gives the supply-and-return rule; the busy-door version simply adds that the door is a second, uncontrolled supply of air you have to place away from. Run the cable. The socket by the door is the single most common wrong position in retail.
Rule: the source sits on the far side of the threshold zone, on a wall the draught does not run along.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu wall-mounts inward, so the source can leave the door socket and sit where the air stays.

3
The level
Judged from the far displays, never from the doorway
The most expensive mistake on a busy-door floor is judging the level from the entrance. An owner walks in from the street, smells nothing in the first three metres, and turns the machine up. The doorway still smells of nothing - it always will - and the advisor at the specification table is now breathing a level chosen to fill a draught. Set the level from where the air stays: the far displays, the specification table, the corridor between the display kitchens, at five in the afternoon, with the team who stand there nine hours. Noticed at the first display, forgotten by the specification table, un-nameable at the desk. Then lock it. The key-lock on the Vaayu exists because the door is a daily argument for turning it up and levels only drift upward. How strong fragrance should be inside an experience centre is the full treatment of the level; this page adds only that the doorway is not on the list of places it is judged from.
Rule: if the setting was chosen standing in the doorway, it is wrong everywhere else.
4
Hard glass frontages
Glass and steel at the door amplify what does reach them
A glass-fronted showroom has, at its entrance, the least absorbent surfaces on the floor: full-height glazing, steel frames, a stone or tile threshold. Any fragrance that does reach the door zone between exchanges bounces rather than settling, so on the rare still moments - early morning before trading, a quiet afternoon - the entrance can read stronger than the displays, which is the opposite of what the busy hours show. Do not chase either reading. The floor is set from the far point and the door zone is allowed to be whatever the day makes it. On the register: a white, glass-fronted floor usually takes the cooler Morning Freshness; wood, stone and dark glass take Mountain Breeze. Either way it is dry, nothing edible, nothing that a visitor could name from the door.
Rule: early-morning strength at a glass door is the still air talking, not the machine. Set from the far point and leave it.
5
The door itself
The only fix for a door is the door
Everything above accepts the door as it is. The one lever available is not a fragrance lever: close it. A door closer, a second leaf kept shut, a lobby or airlock where the plan allows one, an air curtain if the building already has one - each narrows the threshold zone and keeps more of the conditioned air on the floor, which matters for the AC bill long before it matters for the fragrance. A mall unit with a fully open frontage has the widest zone of all, and the honest answer there is to treat the first third of the floor as a draught and scent the back two-thirds from a source deep inside. On the merchandise, one thing only: SOSA makes no claim about what fragrance does to any appliance or finish, at the door or anywhere else; the product fact is that a waterless machine adds no moisture and leaves no residue. And on the demonstration: a live kitchen near the door is still unscented, still on its own extraction, and the machine is still off on the timer while it runs.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu holds a locked level on the floor behind the door and switches off on the timer for the demo - the door is the one thing it does not try to fix.

The SOSA principle
A door that opens all day is not a fault in the fragrance plan. It is the edge of the plan - the line past which the air belongs to the street, and inside which one machine, placed inward and locked, does the whole job.
Draw the threshold zone. Place past it. Judge from the far point. Close the door when you can. Never turn it up.

The rest of the family meets the door in different rooms: near the entrance or deeper inside is the placement decision this page argues for, strong in one zone, weak in another is the diagnosis when the door is only one of several draughts on the floor, and even fragrance across multiple display zones is the pillar. For the register the floor should hold once the door is accepted, what a premium appliance showroom should smell like is the start. SOSA makes no claim that any of this affects dwell time, footfall, conversion or sales.

A note from Sonal

The doorway is where I lose the most arguments and where I most need to win them. An owner stands on the mat of a showroom on a main road, breathes in, smells traffic, and looks at me as though the machine has failed. I ask them to walk to the specification table and breathe again. It is there, dry and quiet, exactly as it was set. The door is doing what doors do, and the fragrance is doing what it was asked to do, and the two are not in the same place.

I will not sell a second machine for a doorway and I will not turn the first one up for it, because I know where that ends: an advisor at the desk breathing a level chosen for a draught, and a doorway that still smells of the street. What I will do is draw the threshold zone on the plan, put the Vaayu high on a wall past it where the supply crosses, set the level from the far displays with the team at five, and lock it. Then I ask about the door itself - a closer, a second leaf, a lobby - because that is the only lever there is, and it is not mine.

For a small studio the same rule shrinks to a Mountain Breeze reed on the far side of the desk, or Morning Freshness behind a white glass front, and no product at all by the door. And the frame around every plan: no claim that fragrance moves dwell time, footfall or sales, and no claim about what it does to anything on display. It is an interiors decision, like lighting or music, alongside ventilation and extraction, never instead of them, and the live kitchen stays unscented. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the entrance of my glass-fronted appliance store never smell of the fragrance?
Because a busy door exchanges the air in the first three to five metres with the street or mall many times an hour, and fragrance released into that zone leaves with it before anyone notices. That is the defining fact of retail scenting and no machine, setting or second unit changes it. The floor deeper in, where the air stays, holds the register; the door zone is accepted as a draught and never used to judge the level.
Should I put a scent machine right beside the showroom door so visitors smell it as they walk in?
No. A source by the door releases into air that is on its way out, so the doorway still smells of outside while the same output over-scents the floor where the air does stay. Place the SOSA Vaayu inward, high on a wall the AC supply crosses and out of the door's line of draught, and let the fragrance be noticed at the first display rather than on the mat. The socket by the door is the most common wrong position in retail.
Is it worth turning the scent machine up on days when the door is opening constantly?
It is the mistake this page exists to prevent. Turning up to reach the door gives the advisor at the specification table a level nobody chose and gives the doorway nothing, because the air there is replaced every few minutes regardless. Keep the setting where the team stopped noticing it at the far point, lock it with the key-lock, and accept that a busy door makes the threshold a draught. Close the door when you can; that is the only lever.
What about a mall unit with a completely open frontage and no door at all?
The threshold zone is simply wider - often the first third of the floor - and the honest plan treats it as a draught and scents the back two-thirds from a source deep inside, wall-mounted high on the supply side. One SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for a connected floor of roughly 1,500-3,000 sq ft, level set from the far displays, locked. A studio under about 750 sq ft is a Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness reed at Rs 749-849 on the far side of the desk.
Does a busy street door in a kitchen-appliance showroom change the rule about the live kitchen?
No. The live kitchen and coffee counter stay unscented whether the door is shut or open all day, because the smell of what is being cooked or brewed is the product demonstration. The machine is switched off on the timer while a demo runs and extraction clears the room afterwards. A door near the kitchen adds draught, which extraction handles, and fragrance never covers cooking odour in any case; it returns only when the air smells of nothing.
