Take two homes with the same bottle of the same fragrance, six reeds each, bought the same week. In the first, the owner reports that the flat smells wonderful from the front door. In the second, the owner reports that it smells wonderful only if you put your face near it. The bottles are identical, so whatever differs is not in the glass. Part three — giving the room something worth carrying
Having said that throw belongs to the room, there is one respect in which the composition genuinely affects perceived distance, and it is worth stating carefully because it is easy to overclaim. As fragrance disperses, it thins; and as it thins, the parts of a composition that survive are the ones with enough character to remain identifiable at low concentration. Sharp, cold, structured materials tend to stay recognisable as they weaken, while soft rounded ones tend to blur into a general pleasantness before disappearing. This is why Morning Freshness at 9.0 on our scale can read as reaching further across a humid room than a floral sitting at 8.9, and why Mountain Breeze at 9.4 holds an outline at distance that its number alone does not fully explain. The strength figure describes projection at the source. What happens to the fragrance on the way across the room is a separate matter of composition.
The second thing worth carrying is more of it — but from more places, not from a bigger vessel. Output per bottle is fixed by reed surface and composition, so a 130ml at six reeds releases at about the rate a 50ml does; it simply keeps doing it for 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8. The only honest way to raise the total quantity of fragrance entering a space is another source. In a long living-dining, two 50ml bottles at opposite ends give you two point sources whose fields overlap in the middle, which is a genuinely different geometry from one bottle trying to reach eleven feet. If you do this, make the two compositions share a note or you will get a seam where they meet: Mountain Breeze and Morning Freshness meet on green eucalyptus, and Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth and a soft musky base.
And then the boundary. There is a distance past which a passive format simply does not reach, and I would rather name it than sell you a third bottle. Roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume is the practical edge; beyond it, or in a double-height space, or when what you want is a room that becomes fragrant in ten minutes because guests have arrived, the right answer is a machine. I dislike the phrase "scent throw" for reed diffusers and I use it anyway, because it is the phrase people search for.
