Founder Diaries · Just-Because & Surprise Fragrance Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
Here is the constraint, before any product is named. You are looking for something to send because there is nothing useful you can do from where you are standing, and whatever you send will not change how the day went. A fragrance is a scent and nothing more. What a small parcel does is tell somebody you thought about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and the only thing this page claims.
SOSA Adaa attar, bergamot and jasmine sambac, from Rs 379
SOSA Adaa · bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac from ₹379 →
SOSA Adaa, from ₹379 for 3ml - bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac over white musk, alcohol-free and rolled on rather than sprayed. It leads this page because it is the smallest thing here that still reads as chosen rather than grabbed, and on a day that has already gone wrong the size of the gesture is the part worth getting right. It adds a scent. That is all it does, and all that is claimed for it.
Quick answers — read this first
What can I send someone who is having a bad day? Something small and specific, with a line saying why you sent it. A 3ml alcohol-free attar at ₹379 to ₹399, or car fragrance at ₹449 if they drive. Keep the object modest - the sentence you write carries the meaning, and no fragrance changes a day.

Does fragrance help with a bad day? No, and no honest page will tell you otherwise. Fragrance adds a scent to skin or to a room and does nothing else. SOSA makes no claim about what any scent does to anybody, and a product name that contains a word like Calm is a name rather than an effect.

How much should I spend on a gift for someone having a bad day? Under ₹500 covers it. ₹379 to ₹399 for a 3ml attar, or ₹449 for a car fragrance. A larger parcel mostly moves attention onto the gift and onto you, which is the opposite of what you were trying to do.
The short answer
Short answer: Send something small and write why you sent it. A 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399 or a car fragrance at Rs 449 is the right size. A fragrance does not change how a day went, and if what is happening is bigger than a bad day, ring them instead of buying anything.
The pick: A single 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, with a line saying why you sent it.
Why: It is small enough that the parcel does not become the subject, and the message you attach is the part doing the work.
Choosing a gift when there is no occasion - at a glanceSmall enough not to need explaining - attar ₹379, car scent ₹449For their home - reed diffuser ₹749, duo set ₹1,498Posted to another city - flat, light, nothing to assembleNever - anything that needs a reason to justify it
A gift with no occasion attached has one job an occasion gift does not: it has to make sense on its own. That usually means small enough not to need explaining and useful enough not to sit there - which is why a ₹379 attar often lands better than something three times the price handed over with an apology for the timing.
Straight answer
What should I send someone who is having a bad day?
Send something small, and write one honest sentence with it. The product matters less than most gift pages pretend: a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, or a car fragrance at ₹449 to ₹549 if they drive, is the right size for this, and anything much larger turns a quiet gesture into an event that now has to be discussed. What it will not do is change anything about the day - a fragrance is a scent, it is not help, and any page telling you a bottle fixes somebody's week is selling you a story rather than a product. The useful part is the note: saw this, thought of you, no reason. And there is a case for buying nothing at all, which is when what is happening is bigger than a bad day - a loss, an illness, somebody genuinely in trouble. Then put the phone call first and let a parcel follow later if it follows at all, because a small gift sits alongside showing up for somebody and never in place of it. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
A gift is a gesture of attention. It is not help, and the page that tells you otherwise is flattering you rather than informing you.
The honest short version: keep it under ₹500, send a 3ml attar at ₹379 or a car scent at ₹449, and put the effort into the sentence you send with it.
SOSA attars from ₹379

What a small parcel can honestly do, and what it cannot

Most pages on this subject sell you an effect. This one will not, because fragrance does not have one to sell. What is left is a smaller and more useful set of questions: how big the gesture should be, what the object is honestly for, and when the right move is to send nothing.

1
The first thing
Small is the point, not the compromise
The instinct on somebody else's bad day is to do something proportionate to how much you mind, and that pushes the budget up. It is worth resisting. A large parcel arriving unannounced becomes a thing that has to be acknowledged, thanked for and explained, and all of that lands on the person who is already having the worse day of the two of you.

Under ₹500 keeps it light: an attar at ₹379 to ₹399, a car scent at ₹449. Small enough to be opened, used and left alone. This is the one page in the range where the cheapest option is not a compromise at all - it is the correct answer, and spending more makes the gesture heavier rather than kinder.
Tip: If it would need to be thanked for properly, it is too big for today.
2
The second thing
What the object is honestly for
A fragrance adds a scent to skin or to a room. That is the entire specification. It does not do anything else, SOSA claims nothing else for it, and where a product name contains a word like Calm - as Evening Calm does - that word is the name of a lavender and chamomile blend rather than a description of an effect.

So what is the parcel for? It is a physical version of a message. Somebody opens a small box on a day they did not expect anything and the information in it is: you were thought about, by a particular person, for no reason that a calendar produced. That is worth sending. It is also all of it, and knowing that stops you buying something oversized to carry a load it was never going to carry.
3
The third thing
When to send nothing and call instead
There is a real line here and it is worth naming. A bad day is a bad day - work went wrong, something small fell apart, the week has been long. A parcel is a fine response to that.

What is on the other side of the line is different: a bereavement, an illness, somebody in genuine trouble. In those cases do not open a product page. Ring them, or go. A gift belongs alongside actually turning up for somebody and never as a replacement for it, and nothing on this page is advice about anybody's health or a substitute for a professional who can actually help. If you want to send something afterwards as well, send it afterwards, and keep it just as small.
Tip: If you are buying something so you do not have to make the call, make the call.
SOSA Nawaab attar, white oud and saffron, from Rs 399
The smallest serious gift
An attar is the one fragrance gift that costs under ₹500 and still reads as considered
Alcohol-free concentrated oil, applied on the pulse points rather than sprayed. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac; Ameeri is Taif rose, sandalwood and saffron; Nawaab is white oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, damask rose and oudh. From ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml.
See the SOSA attars →
Work it out in this order
What to do, in the order that matters
  1. Ask first whether a phone call is the honest answer. Often it is.
  2. Keep it under Rs 500. A large parcel changes the subject to the gift.
  3. Pick a 3ml attar at Rs 379, or a car fragrance at Rs 449 if they drive.
  4. Write why you sent it. The sentence does the work, not the bottle.
The SOSA principle
A gift is a gesture of attention. It is not help and it is not a stand-in for a person, and the moment a page promises that a bottle will fix somebody's week it has started lying to you.
The sentence you send with it matters more than the thing you send, and it costs nothing.

What to send, and why it should be the small one

Since the object is small by design, the scent choice is quick and low-stakes. If you can name something they already wear, an attar is accurate: Adaa at ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom and jasmine sambac over white musk; Ameeri at ₹385 is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood and Persian saffron; Mastani at ₹389 is night jasmine with damask rose and oudh; Nawaab at ₹399 is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. If you cannot name anything, buy for a place rather than a person - Jasmine car fragrance at ₹449 or Lemon at ₹499 for somebody who drives, in a mild hanging format or a stronger spray at the same price. Choose on materials you think they would like, not on what a scent is supposed to do, because it is not supposed to do anything.

The SOSA gift edit
Four responses, including the one that costs nothing
The option Who it suits, and where it fails
Send nothing, ring them · ₹0 Listed first deliberately. If what is happening is larger than a bad day, or if you are shopping partly to avoid a conversation, this is the right row. A parcel sits alongside turning up for somebody and never instead of it, and nothing here is a substitute for a person or for professional help.
A 3ml attar · ₹379 to ₹399 The recommendation on this page. Alcohol-free oil in the smallest bottle SOSA makes, rolled on rather than sprayed, with a line saying why you sent it. It fails if you buy it because you want it to do something - it adds a scent and nothing more, and buying it for any other reason will disappoint you rather than them.
Car fragrance · ₹449 to ₹549 Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price. The practical pick for somebody who drives daily, because it goes somewhere they already are. It fails for somebody who drives twice a month, and it fails if you cannot remember whether they run hanging or spray.
A 50ml reed diffuser · ₹749 to ₹849 Passive home fragrance, about 6 to 10 weeks, for somebody whose home you know. It is the top of the sensible band for this and it is already pushing it, because at ₹749 a parcel on an ordinary bad day starts to be an event. Send it only if the two of you exchange gifts of that size normally.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,598
The gift that goes to a home
A reed duo set is a readymade gift box without any guessing about taste
Two reed diffusers in one box: Day & Night pairs lemon-mint with lavender-chamomile at ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded pairs lemon-mint with pine-cedar at ₹1,548, and Warmth & Bloom pairs coffee-vanilla with rose-jasmine at ₹1,598. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
See the reed duo sets →

One last practical point, and it is about restraint rather than product. Everything on this page is flat, light and simple to post, and none of it needs assembling, a socket or an app at the other end, which is what makes it workable when you are not there. But the reason to keep the parcel small is not postage - it is that a small thing can be received without any effort, on a day when effort is exactly what the person has run out of. So do not upgrade the size to show you meant it. Say that you meant it, in words, and let the object stay small. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali, which is true of everything SOSA sells and is not a reason to buy anything today.

SOSA Attar Trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, from Rs 1,055
Ameeri (Taif rose and sandalwood), Nawaab (white oud and saffron) and Mastani (night jasmine and rose) in one box. Three characters instead of one guess.
₹1,055 · 3ml x 3
SOSA Day and Night reed diffuser duo gift set, Rs 1,498
Morning Freshness lemon-mint and Evening Calm lavender-chamomile together. Nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks each.
₹1,498 · 50ml x 2
SOSA Safar waterless cordless car and travel perfume diffuser, Rs 3,999
Waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold diffusion for a car or a travel bag. The gift for someone who spends real hours driving.
₹3,999
When the gift is meant to be the big one
SOSA Safar ₹3,999 for the car, SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 for the whole home
Safar is the waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser for a car or a travel bag - ₹3,999 for the SOSA-scent trios and ₹4,499 for the hotel-inspired trios. Vaayu is the machine version of the same idea for a building: waterless cold-air nebulising of undiluted oil, rated for approximately 1000 m3 of connected air, with a Bluetooth app and timer, a 400ml tank, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, DC 12V / 1A 5W mains power and CE, RoHS and SGS marks. Both run waterless nebuliser oil - 100 gm ₹1,049, 300 gm ₹1,849 - and neither takes the ₹299 water-based Hotel Collection bottle. A rating assumes one connected body of air, so a Vaayu suits a large open home or a business and is the wrong gift for a two-bedroom flat with every door closed. It adds a scent to a space; it does not remove one.

I will not tell you a fragrance fixes a bad day, because it does not. What a small parcel says is that somebody thought about you on a day when nothing made them - and that is worth sending on its own.

The SOSA gifting range

Three questions settle almost every one of these. Will it be worn, in which case it is a taste decision and you need to be able to name something they already wear? Will it sit in a room, in which case it is a placement decision and a reed diffuser asks nothing of you except an address? Or does it go in a car, where the real choice is between the mild hanging format and the stronger spray at the same price? Answer that, then pick the band - and with no occasion attached, the band should usually be lower than you first reach for.

The SOSA gifting range
Pick by where the gift will live, then by budget - in that order
Gift What it is Who it suits Price
SOSA attars Alcohol-free roll-on oil Adaa, Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml - the smallest serious fragrance gift there is from ₹379
SOSA Attar Trio Pack of three attars Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box - three characters instead of one guess from ₹1,055
SOSA reed diffusers Passive home fragrance Five scents in 50ml and 130ml, nothing to plug in or switch off, about 6 to 10 weeks from ₹749
SOSA reed duo sets Two reeds in one box Day & Night, Fresh & Grounded and Warmth & Bloom - the readymade home gift from ₹1,498
SOSA car fragrance Hanging or spray Nine scents, each in a mild hanging format and a stronger spray at the same price from ₹449
SOSA Safar Waterless car and travel diffuser Cordless and rechargeable cold diffusion, for the person who actually lives in their car ₹3,999
SOSA Vaayu Waterless cold-air machine Approx 1000 m3 of connected air with a Bluetooth app and timer - a large home or a business ₹11,999

Three different fluids run through this range and none of them is interchangeable. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil. The SOSA ultrasonics - Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 and Megh ₹3,499 - run the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299. Vaayu and Safar run waterless nebulising oil, so the ₹299 water-based bottle never goes into either of them. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The orders I like most are the ones with no date attached. Somebody buys one attar on a Wednesday afternoon and asks us to send it to a flat in another city, and there is no birthday in the note and no anniversary and no festival. Those are, in my experience, the gifts that actually get used, and I think the reason is unglamorous: nobody has to live up to them. An anniversary gift carries an expectation. A Wednesday gift carries none, so it gets opened, put on a shelf and used the next morning.

The practical advice I give people is the opposite of what they expect. Go smaller than you think. A large unexplained present asks a question - what is this for, what do I owe you - and the person receiving it spends energy answering it. A ₹379 attar, a ₹449 car scent, a ₹749 reed diffuser: these are small enough to be accepted without any of that. If you want to spend more, spend it on accuracy instead of size - the right scent for somebody's actual flat beats a bigger bottle of the wrong one every time.

One honest thing about the harder version of this. People write to us when somebody they love is having a terrible week, and they want to send something that helps. I will not tell you that a fragrance does that, because it does not. What a small parcel says is: I was thinking about you on a day when nothing made me. That is a real thing to say to somebody and it is worth saying. It is not treatment, it is not a substitute for turning up, and anybody who sells it to you as either is selling you something else.

Frequently asked questions

What can I send someone who is having a bad day?
Something small, with a line saying why you sent it. A 3ml alcohol-free attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399, or a car fragrance at Rs 449 if they drive. Keep it under Rs 500, because a large parcel turns a quiet gesture into something that has to be acknowledged and discussed.
Does fragrance help with a bad day?
No. Fragrance adds a scent to skin or to a room and does nothing else, and SOSA makes no claim about what any scent does to anybody. A product name containing a word like Calm is the name of a blend and not a description of an effect.
Should I send a gift or just call?
Call first if what is happening is bigger than a bad day, such as a loss, an illness or somebody in genuine trouble. A gift belongs alongside showing up for a person and never in place of it. If you are buying something partly so that you do not have to make the call, make the call.
How much should I spend?
Under Rs 500. A 3ml attar is Rs 379 to Rs 399 and a car fragrance is Rs 449 to Rs 549. Car hanging refills are Rs 399 to Rs 429 but only suit somebody who already owns the hanging bottle. Spending more mostly moves the attention onto the gift rather than the person.
What should I write with it?
One plain sentence is enough, and it should say what is true: that you saw this, thought of them, and there is no occasion behind it. The note is the part carrying the meaning. If you would rather have somebody else choose the object, message SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and describe the person and your budget.

Send the small one, and say why you sent it
A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 or a car fragrance at ₹449 is the right size for this, and the sentence you send with it is the part that matters. If what is happening is bigger than a bad day, ring the person instead and let a parcel follow later. Nothing here is advice about anybody's health, and nothing here replaces a person.
Not sure which one suits the person you are buying for? Send SOSA their age, whether they drive, whether they like their home scented and your budget on WhatsApp, and you will get an honest answer - including when the cheaper product is the better gift.
