The honest answer is no, and it is worth saying so plainly before anything else, because the assumption costs brokers money. An empty flat is not a larger space than the same flat with furniture in it. It is the same floor area under the same ceiling, holding very slightly more air than it did when there was a sofa and a wardrobe in the way. The coverage arithmetic does not change at all. What changes is something else entirely, and once you see what it is, the correct adjustment turns out to be to the timer rather than to the machine.
Quick answers — read this first
Does an empty flat need a bigger scent machine than a furnished one? No. Coverage is a function of connected air volume, and an empty flat has the same floor area and the same ceiling height as the furnished version of itself - marginally more air, in fact, because furniture displaces a little of it, but the difference is trivial and never changes the machine you buy. A 2,000 sq ft flat at a ten-foot ceiling is 20,000 cubic feet, about 566 cubic metres, whether it is full of furniture or completely bare. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated at roughly 1000 cubic metres of connected air and covers 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft evenly, and that figure is the same in an empty property.

What actually changes when the property is empty? Persistence, not coverage. A furnished home stores fragrance in its soft materials - curtains, upholstery, rugs, mattresses, clothes - and keeps releasing it for hours after the machine has stopped. An empty flat has nothing porous in it, so the scent lives only in the air and starts falling away as soon as the source is switched off. The air is also stiller, because nobody is walking through the flat, cooking or running an exhaust fan, so distribution takes longer. Both point to the same adjustment: run the machine for longer, and keep it running during the viewing, rather than increasing the intensity.

So should I just turn the setting up in an empty property? That is the specific mistake this page exists to prevent. Turning it up does not solve a persistence problem - it produces a strongly scented room while the machine runs and the same rapid drop-off afterwards, and it hands the buyer the one impression you least want. A bare flat has no competing smells, so a nose reads it more sharply than a furnished one, and heavy fragrance in a vacant property is read as concealment faster than anywhere else. Run longer, not stronger: start an hour or more before the appointment at the lowest usable setting, leave it running through the viewing, and let time do the work that intensity cannot.
The short answer
Short answer: No. An empty flat is the same connected air volume as the furnished version of itself, so the coverage arithmetic is unchanged: 2,000 sq ft at a ten-foot ceiling is 20,000 cubic feet or about 566 cubic metres, 3,000 sq ft is 30,000 cubic feet or about 850 cubic metres, and one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is rated to roughly 1000 cubic metres and covers 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. What changes in an empty property is persistence - with no soft furnishings to hold it, scent decays quickly once the machine stops. So run it longer, not stronger, and keep it on through the viewing. Closed doors, not furniture, are what defeat a coverage rating. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
My listing is empty. Do I need a bigger machine than I would for a furnished flat?
No, and here is the arithmetic. 1. Volume is volume. Coverage ratings describe connected air, and air does not care whether there is a sofa in it. A 2,000 sq ft flat at a ten-foot ceiling is 20,000 cubic feet, which divided by 35.3 is about 566 cubic metres, empty or furnished. A 3,000 sq ft flat at the same height is 30,000 cubic feet, about 850 cubic metres. Furniture displaces a small fraction of that, so a bare flat technically holds slightly more air, but the difference is inside the rounding and has never changed a purchase decision. 2. One machine still covers it. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is rated at roughly 1000m³ of connected air, and SOSA's own figure is that one unit covers 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft evenly using the room's natural airflow. Both of those flats sit inside one unit whether or not anybody has moved out. 3. What changes is how long it lasts. A furnished home holds fragrance in curtains, rugs, upholstery, mattresses and clothes and releases it for hours afterwards. An empty flat stores nothing, so the scent exists only while the machine is making it and decays quickly once it stops. 4. So change the timer, not the machine. Start an hour or more before the appointment, keep it running quietly through the viewing, and leave the intensity at the lowest usable setting. Longer, not stronger. 5. The thing that does break coverage is doors. A rating assumes one connected volume. Two closed bedroom doors turn a 566m³ flat into a 400m³ front of house and two unscented boxes, and that is true in a furnished flat too. Open every internal door before you start. 6. Where it genuinely outgrows one unit. A 5,000 sq ft villa at ten feet is 50,000 cubic feet, about 1,415m³, and a 6,000 sq ft double-height home at twenty feet is 120,000 cubic feet, about 3,400m³. Those are zoned multi-unit conversations, or SOSA Aangan at ₹25,999 for 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft. Send the layout to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 and we will size it with you. One line: same flat, same air, same machine - 2,000 sq ft is about 566m³ and 3,000 sq ft about 850m³ either way, and one Vaayu (₹11,999, ~1000m³) covers both. An empty flat just does not hold the scent afterwards, so run longer rather than stronger. Registers from ₹299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Same volume, different persistence

Three things to separate: the volume arithmetic, which does not change; the persistence, which changes completely; and the door discipline, which is what actually breaks a coverage figure.

Why this works
Empty or furnished: what changes and what does not
12,000 sq ft at 10 ft = 20,000 cu ft = about 566 cubic metres, empty or furnished23,000 sq ft at 10 ft = 30,000 cu ft = about 850 cubic metres - still one Vaayu3Empty flats hold no scent after the machine stops: run longer, not stronger4Closed internal doors break coverage far more than furniture ever did
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The arithmetic
The number is identical, and it is worth doing it once
Take the flat you are actually showing and run it properly. Floor area in square feet multiplied by finished ceiling height in feet gives cubic feet; divide by 35.3 for cubic metres. A 2,000 sq ft apartment at a ten-foot ceiling is 20,000 cubic feet, which is about 566 cubic metres. A 3,000 sq ft apartment at the same height is 30,000 cubic feet, about 850 cubic metres. A 1,400 sq ft two-bedroom is 14,000 cubic feet, about 397 cubic metres. Now furnish it. Add a three-seater sofa, a dining table and six chairs, three wardrobes, two beds, a television unit and a bookshelf, and you have displaced perhaps eight to twelve cubic metres of air out of 566, which is around two per cent. That is the entire physical difference between the empty flat and the furnished one as far as volume is concerned, and it points in the opposite direction to the instinct: the empty flat holds slightly more air, not less, but not enough to matter. Nobody should ever buy a larger machine because a property is vacant. If the coverage arithmetic said one unit when there was furniture in it, it says one unit now. The detailed version of this calculation, including ceiling heights above ten feet and multi-floor homes, is set out in the villa coverage guide rather than repeated here.
Tip: furniture displaces roughly two per cent of a flat's air - it is not a sizing variable, and it never was.
2
The real difference
Persistence is what an empty flat takes away from you
Here is what actually changes, and it is worth understanding because it explains every practical adjustment in this section. A furnished home is a reservoir. Curtains, sheers, upholstery, cushions, rugs, mattresses, bed linen and a wardrobe of clothes absorb fragrance while the machine runs and release it slowly for hours afterwards. That is why a homeowner can run a diffuser in the morning and have the flat still read composed in the evening, and it is why a furnished property forgives sloppy timing. An empty flat has no reservoir at all. Tile, marble, plaster, glass and laminate hold effectively nothing. Whatever the machine is producing is what is in the air, and the moment the machine stops, the level begins to fall - faster still if a window gets opened or a group of people walks through with the front door propped. There is a second, quieter effect stacked on top: an empty flat has stiller air, because nobody is cooking, showering, running an exhaust fan or walking from room to room, so distribution from the machine to the far bedroom takes longer than it would in an occupied home. Both effects have one answer and it is not a larger machine. It is more running time before the buyer arrives, and continued running during the viewing. Longer, not stronger.
3
The real limit
Doors, ceiling height and separated wings - not furniture
If you want to know when one machine genuinely stops being enough, look at the plan rather than the furniture. First, doors. Every coverage rating in the industry assumes one connected body of air, and a flat with two bedroom doors closed is not one 566m³ volume - it is a front of house of perhaps 380m³ and two sealed boxes that will smell of nothing. Walk the flat and open every internal door before you switch anything on, and remember that a buyer who opens a closed bedroom door mid-viewing walks into unscented, unaired air, which is a worse impression than not scenting at all. Second, ceiling height. It is a multiplier, not a detail: a 2,000 sq ft flat at twelve feet is 24,000 cubic feet, about 680m³, and a double-height living volume changes the number again. Third, separation. A duplex, a villa with wings, or a flat where the bedroom corridor turns twice behind a door is several volumes rather than one, however modest the total square footage. Those are the cases that need zoning, a second unit, or a step up to SOSA Aangan at ₹25,999 for 8,000 to 10,000 sq ft or SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft. The full working for larger and multi-floor homes is in the villa coverage guide and the multi-floor villa guide. None of those thresholds move because the property is vacant.
Tip: a closed bedroom door costs you more coverage than every piece of furniture in the flat combined.
The SOSA principle
An empty flat does not need a bigger machine. It needs a longer run - because the flat has lost its ability to hold what you put in, not its ability to be filled.
Same volume, same unit, same low setting. Change the timer, open the internal doors, and leave the intensity alone.

The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

If furniture holds fragrance, does a furnished flat need a smaller machine?
No, and it is the same error in the other direction. The machine is sized to fill the connected air volume, and that volume is essentially identical in both cases. What furniture changes is how long the fragrance stays after you stop, not how much output it takes to reach the far end of the flat in the first place. Where the difference shows up is in how you run the machine rather than which one you buy: in a furnished home you can start later and switch off earlier, because the soft materials carry the scent through the appointment for you. In an empty flat you start earlier and keep it running. Same unit, same setting, different schedule. If anything, a furnished flat lets you run at a lower average output across a week, which is worth knowing if the property is occupied and the owner is paying the electricity.
Does a high ceiling change the answer for a vacant flat?
Height changes the answer for every flat, vacant or not, and it is the variable people forget. Coverage is volume, and volume is floor area multiplied by finished ceiling height. A 2,000 sq ft flat at ten feet is about 566 cubic metres; the same flat at twelve feet is 24,000 cubic feet, about 680 cubic metres; a double-height living room in a duplex can add several hundred cubic metres on its own. That is a real sizing consideration and it is why we ask for the height rather than only the carpet area. What it is not is an empty-property effect - the ceiling was that high when the sofa was still there. Measure the finished height under any false ceiling, not the slab, and send both numbers to us on WhatsApp if you want it checked.
Can I run the machine continuously in a vacant flat between viewings?
You can, and for a property you show several times a week it is often the simplest arrangement, but think about it as an air question rather than a fragrance one. A vacant flat needs opening and airing regularly regardless of scenting, and a machine running for days in a shut flat with nobody in it is not a substitute for that. The pattern that works is: air the flat properly on each visit, pour water down the traps, and use the timer so the machine runs in the hours around your viewing window rather than around the clock. That gives you an even, settled air on the day and avoids the slow build-up that happens when anything runs continuously into a closed space. We do not publish consumption or refill frequency figures, so if you want to talk about how a specific running pattern works out for your listing, WhatsApp us on +91 96192 18531.
Would two smaller machines be better than one in an empty flat?
It depends entirely on the plan, and not at all on whether the flat is furnished. Two machines make sense when the property is genuinely two volumes - a bedroom wing behind a corridor door, a separate floor, a large terrace-facing living space and a distant guest suite. In those cases a single unit anywhere in the flat leaves one zone under-served no matter how you set it, and no increase in output fixes a plan problem. Two machines do not make sense as a way of compensating for an empty flat's lack of persistence, because both machines will stop holding at exactly the same rate. If your flat is one reasonably connected volume with the internal doors open, one correctly placed unit is the better answer and the cheaper one. Send us the layout and we will tell you honestly which of the two your property is.
Is scenting a vacant flat worth doing at all if the scent disappears so fast?
It is worth doing for the ninety minutes that matter, which is the only window that was ever the point. A viewing is a short, scheduled event, and a machine running quietly from an hour before until the buyer leaves covers it completely. What the fast decay does mean is that you should not expect the flat to smell composed when you walk in cold on an unannounced visit, or three days after the last appointment, and you should not buy on that expectation. It also means that for a listing you show rarely, reed diffusers from Rs 749, which sit there working on the days you are not present, may suit your pattern better than a machine you have to arrive early to switch on. Match the tool to how you actually work the listing rather than to how the property looks.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
