Father, brother, a study, a shared room: Mountain Breeze ₹849. Mother, when you know she likes flowers: Garden Bloom ₹799. In-laws as a couple: the Day & Night duo ₹1,498, which is two bottles. The joint family home: a 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349, which runs 14–18 weeks. Cousins and the wider list: jar candles ₹379.
The honest gap, stated first: there is no reed diffuser below ₹749, so any relationship on your list with a sub-₹500 budget — a younger sister, a cousin, a dozen names at once — is a candle or an attar, not a diffuser, and this page says so rather than pretending otherwise. There is also no gift set, hamper, gift box, gift card, gift wrap, gift note or personalisation.
2. Default to Evening Calm at ₹799 and change it only for a reason. At 8.9 it is the softest and least polarising scent in the range, and it carries no cultural loading — rose, jasmine, coffee and pine all arrive in an Indian home pre-attached to something, and lavender does not. It is the correct answer for parents, grandparents, a bhabhi, a sister-in-law, and anyone you are guessing about.
3. Change it for a study, for a floral, or for a coffee house. Mountain Breeze ₹849 for a father, a brother, a study or any room two people use differently — it is the least gendered scent we make. Garden Bloom ₹799 only when you know they like flowers. Fresh Brew ₹849 only for a genuine coffee household; at 9.5 it is the deepest thing we make and the least safe guess.
4. For a couple, buy two bottles rather than one. The Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 is two separate 50ml bottles, bright and soft. One object sent to two people leaves one of them a bystander, and everybody in the room can tell which. Two objects removes the problem entirely.
5. Buy identically within a ring. If four cousins are on the list, send four of the same candle. Nothing on a family list causes more quiet trouble than visibly different gifts to people who will compare them at the same table. Identical within a tier is not laziness — it is the thing that protects everyone.
Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, six fibre reeds, refillable glass, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The rule that sorts the whole shelf, and the two mistakes it prevents
Family gifting goes wrong in two directions and both come from confusing two variables that have nothing to do with each other. Closeness governs how personal a gift is allowed to be. Budget governs how large it is. People routinely swap them. They buy something intimate for somebody distant because the budget was generous, or something impersonal for somebody close because the budget was small — and both read as a misunderstanding of the relationship rather than as a matter of money. A candle to a cousin is correct. A candle to your mother, if you can afford a bottle, reads as an afterthought. A personal fragrance to a bhabhi is a presumption at any price.
Home fragrance is unusually good at this list precisely because it spans both rings without changing character. The same category — something for a room — is available at ₹379 as a candle and at ₹1,498 as two bottles, and at no point does it become personal. It never has a size. It never carries an opinion about the recipient's body or diet. It is used by whoever walks into the room. That means you can do eleven names from one shelf without any of them receiving a gift whose register is wrong for them, which is the actual difficulty of a family list and not something a price filter will solve.
The three things a family gift has to survive
Before the table, the three tests every row below has been put through. They are specific to a family list rather than to gifting generally, and they are the reason the ranking comes out the way it does.
Bookshop candle₹379Family gifts are opened in proximity to one another, often in the same hour, and the comparison is unavoidable. The protection is not to spend more; it is to buy identically within a ring. Four cousins get four of the same candle. Both parents get one bottle for the house rather than two competing ones. Two sisters-in-law get the same scent at the same price. What causes trouble is not modesty, it is visible variation without an obvious reason for it — and when there is a reason, say it, because a father getting the woody one and a mother getting the floral one reads as thought rather than as ranking.
Morning Freshness₹749A household on several lists takes delivery of nearly identical boxes through one door, several times a day, for several days running. Count the festive week in arrivals rather than in rupees and the duplication problem becomes obvious: the tenth box of sweets is not a tenth as good as the first, it is a nuisance, and by the weekend most of it has moved on or gone. A bottle is not duplicated by anybody else on the list, it has no dietary consequence in a week when someone in the house is fasting or diabetic or simply finished with sugar, and it is still working in the new year. That is the whole displacement argument in one paragraph.
Plain jar candles₹379Family gifts are unwrapped with an audience, which is a genuine constraint on tone. We make a line of candles with messages printed on them — jokes between two people — and they do very well as gifts between friends and partners. They are the wrong object for a parent, an in-law or a bhabhi, because a printed joke read aloud in a room containing four generations is not the same object it was in the shopping basket. For every relationship on this page the candle to buy is a plain one: the jar candles at ₹379 and ₹664 for the two-pack, or the Sandalwood and Smoked Oudh singles at ₹449, none of which carry anything printed on them.
Every relationship on a family list, and what to buy for it
The complete shelf, ranked by relationship. The scent column is the recommendation and the reason column is why — because a list without reasoning is a list you cannot adapt when your family does not match mine. Note the sister row and the cousins row particularly: both sit under ₹500, and there is no reed diffuser at that number, so both are honestly answered with candles and attars instead.
| Relationship | What to buy | Why this one | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parents, as a household | Evening Calm 50ml ★ | Older households want less scent, not more. 8.9 is the softest we make, and three reeds rather than six makes it quieter still | ₹799 |
| Mother | Garden Bloom if you know; Evening Calm if you are guessing | Most gifts to mothers fail by being decorative. A floral is right only when you have actually heard her say she likes flowers | ₹799 |
| Father | Mountain Breeze 50ml | Pine, sage and cedar in a study. The most reliably successful gift we sell to the hardest people to buy fragrance for | ₹849 |
| Brother | Mountain Breeze 50ml | The first-flat argument: nobody buys their own home fragrance, so it is the useful thing he will not have bought | ₹849 |
| Sister, under ₹500 | A 3ml attar ₹379–₹399, a jar candle ₹379, or wax melts ₹474 | There is no reed below ₹749, so at this number the honest shelf is attars, candles and melts — and they are good gifts, not consolation | ₹379–₹474 |
| Bhabhi | Evening Calm 50ml | Close but not intimate, opened in front of everyone, repeated annually. A room gift makes no claim about her | ₹799 |
| In-laws, as a couple | Day & Night duo | Two bottles for two people, so neither is the bystander. Bright for the day rooms, soft for the evening ones | ₹1,498 |
| Grandparents | Evening Calm 50ml, three reeds | The softest scent at the lowest reed count. Nothing to light, nothing to switch on, nothing to maintain | ₹799 |
| The joint family home | A 130ml — ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 | Above 150 sq ft the 50ml is under-sized. The 130ml with all six reeds runs 14–18 weeks in a shared living room | ₹1,249–₹1,349 |
| Cousins and the wider list | Jar candles ₹379, bought identically | Impersonal by design, and identical across the ring so nobody compares. The two-pack at ₹664 where one name deserves more | ₹379–₹664 |
| A house you are visiting | Sandalwood ₹449 or Smoked Oudh ₹449 | Carriable, legible in one second, and it creates no task for a host in the middle of a full house | ₹449 |

Where this shelf runs out, said plainly
Three honest limits, and they matter more on a family list than anywhere else because a family list is long and at least one name will land on each of them. The first is the floor. The cheapest reed diffuser SOSA makes is Morning Freshness at ₹749 and the cheapest machine is the Boond at ₹899. There is nothing between ₹500 and ₹749 in the diffuser line at all. So if four names on your list have a ₹400 budget attached to them, the answer is candles and attars — and those are genuinely good gifts rather than a downgrade, which is why they have their own rows in the table. The only sub-₹300 item on the whole store is the Hotel Collection 15ml at ₹299, and that is a water-based refill for an ultrasonic machine; it does nothing without hardware the recipient almost certainly does not own, so it is not a gift.
The second is presentation. There is no SOSA gift set, gift hamper, gift box, gift card, gift wrap, gift note or personalisation. A duo is two bottles rather than a boxed set. If part of what you wanted from this purchase was an object that arrives already presented, with a name written on it, that is a real requirement and we do not meet it. Related and worth knowing: free shipping starts at ₹499, which means a single ₹379 candle does not clear the threshold while a ₹749 reed does — the gap between those two prices is smaller in practice than it looks on the page.
The third is that sometimes the sweets are correct. For a first visit to elders, for the first Diwali after a wedding, and in any household where mithai simply is the form the greeting takes, a diffuser is a substitution nobody asked for. Sweets in that setting are not a gift competing on quality; they are a ritual, and a bottle cannot perform a ritual. Take the mithai. Where fragrance earns its place is everywhere else on the list — the second year onward, the household already three boxes deep, the person you want to have something still working in January.
The shelf in buying order — and the honest gap
If you are doing the whole family in one sitting, this is the order I would work in: the couple gift first because it is the only one whose shape is fixed, then the individual bottles, then the token tier bought identically across however many names remain. The last row of the table is what this shelf does not do.
| Buy | What it is | Who it is for | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Evening Calm 50ml ★ | Kashmir lavender and chamomile, 8.9, the softest in the range | Parents, grandparents, bhabhi, and anyone you are guessing about | ₹799 |
| 2. Mountain Breeze 50ml | Himalayan pine, sage, Indian cedar — the least gendered scent we make | Fathers, brothers, studies, and rooms two people share | ₹849 |
| 3. Day & Night duo | Two 50ml bottles, bright and soft — not a gift set, genuinely two bottles | In-laws, any couple, any household with two firm opinions | ₹1,498 |
| 4. A 130ml reed | Morning Freshness ₹1,249 to Mountain Breeze ₹1,349, running 14–18 weeks | The joint family home, or any room above 150 sq ft | ₹1,249–₹1,349 |
| 5. Jar candles and the ₹449 singles | Plain, message-free soy candles — ₹379 single, ₹664 two-pack, ₹449 for the Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh | Cousins, the wider list, a house you are visiting. Buy identically | ₹379–₹664 |
| No reed under ₹749, no gift set, and the week mithai wins: the honest gap | There is no reed diffuser below ₹749, no machine below ₹899, and no gift set, hamper, box, card, wrap, note or personalisation. On a first visit to elders, or in a house where sweets are the greeting, mithai is correct and this is not | Said plainly rather than worked around | — |
Versailles
I built this page as a table because that is genuinely how the decision gets made in October — one sitting, a list of names, and a strong preference for finishing. What I did not want to do was produce another list sorted by price, because price is the one thing the reader already knows when they arrive.
The thing worth carrying away is the ordering rule. Proximity decides how personal a gift may be; the budget decides only how big it is. Once those two are separated, a family list stops being eleven separate problems and becomes two rings and a shelf. The inner ring gets a bottle. The outer ring gets a candle, bought identically, so nobody at the table is doing arithmetic.
And I would rather lose the sale than have you buy the wrong shape. If four of your names sit under ₹500, there is no reed diffuser for them — the floor is ₹749 and I am not going to pretend otherwise. If the house you are visiting expects mithai, take mithai. What we make is composed in Pune, alcohol-free, phthalate-free and tested through a monsoon, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
