Why does the fragrance fall off so sharply as you move away from the bottle?
Because of geometry and because nothing is pushing. Fragrance evaporates from the reeds into the air immediately around them and then spreads outward in all directions at once. Reason one
Distance grows in a line, but air grows in three dimensions
This is the part that surprises people, and it is worth sitting with for a moment. When you step back from the bottle, you have moved in one dimension. The fragrance, however, has spread in three. It goes outward, sideways and upward all at once from the reeds, so the parcel of air it now occupies has grown in every direction at the same time. That is why the fall-off feels so much steeper than the distance suggests. Moving from a foot away to two feet away does not halve what reaches you; it divides it by a great deal more, because the same amount of evaporated fragrance is now distributed through many times the volume of air. Continue that outward and by the far side of a bedroom the amount arriving at any given breath is a tiny fraction of what a lean-in gives you. Nothing has gone wrong and nothing has been lost. The fragrance is spread thinly across the room instead of sitting concentrated where you are, and thin enough is indistinguishable from absent.

Your nose has a floor, and the room decides where you cross it
Smell is not a dimmer that fades smoothly to nothing. Below a certain concentration your olfactory receptors do not fire at all, so the experience goes from faint to absent quite abruptly even though the underlying molecules are still there in ever smaller numbers. That threshold is why you can find what feels like a definite edge to your diffuser, a place in the room where it simply switches off. In a powered diffuser the gradient still exists, but something is constantly fighting it: a fan, a jet of atomised oil, a mist stream, all of them carrying fragrance outward faster than the room can dilute it. Capillary action lifts oil up the sticks and evaporation releases it, and from there the fragrance is entirely at the mercy of whatever your room's air was already doing. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. How far should a reed diffuser reach? Can you give me a figure in feet?
We will not, because any figure would be dishonest. The distance at which a reed diffuser stops being detectable is set by the room and not by the bottle: its volume, its ceiling height, its temperature, whether a fan or an AC is running, how often the door opens, whether a window is on the latch, and how long you have been sitting in it. Two people with the identical bottle can genuinely have very different answers, and a number printed on a box would be a measurement taken in someone else's conditions. What we can tell you is the shape of it. Concentration is at its highest at the reeds and falls away steeply in every direction, so the reliable zone is close, and the honest way to use a reed diffuser is to put that close zone where you actually are.
Would a stronger or more expensive fragrance oil travel further?
No, and this is the single most useful thing to know before spending again. A more concentrated oil smells stronger at the source, because there is more fragrance material in each unit of evaporated vapour. It does not travel further, because travel is not a property of the oil at all - it is a property of whether anything is carrying it, and in a reed diffuser nothing is. So a pricier bottle gives you a more intense experience when you lean in, a shorter run if it evaporates faster, and precisely the same silence on the far side of the room. Buying a stronger oil to solve a distance problem is solving the wrong variable. If the distance is what bothers you, change the delivery method rather than the fragrance.
Does the scent collect somewhere else in the room instead of near me?
Often, yes, and it is worth checking before you conclude the room is empty. Scented air is warmed slightly by the room and rises, so a good deal of what evaporates ends up above head height, particularly under a high ceiling, and it can also pool in a still corner away from the door. Meanwhile the path between the door and a window or balcony is usually the busiest air in the room, and anything in that lane is swept out fastest. Two minutes of walking around slowly, including standing up on tiptoe near the diffuser wall, will often reveal that the fragrance is present but simply not where you sit. Moving the bottle to your own height and out of the through-draught frequently produces a bigger improvement than any purchase.
If I put the reed diffuser right beside my bed, will I smell it all night?
You will smell it as you settle, which is genuinely lovely, and you will likely stop registering it within twenty minutes or so. That is not the diffuser fading; it is olfactory adaptation, the same reason you cannot smell your own home when you walk in but a guest can. At a bedside the fragrance is also competing with a fan or an AC directly above it, which thins the air around the bottle quickly. So a bedside reed is a genuinely good use of the format for the wind-down moment rather than a scent that will still be announcing itself at three in the morning. They will give you two or three good spots rather than one, which is a real improvement if you genuinely use those spots, and they will not produce even coverage.
