There is one placement mistake that does more damage than every other put together, and almost nobody knows they are making it. It is not putting the bottle too low, or too far away, or in the wrong corner. It is putting it in moving air: under the split AC's throw, beside the gap under a door, in the path of a cross breeze between two open windows. A draught does not carry your fragrance to you. It takes it somewhere else, and it charges you for the privilege by emptying the bottle sooner.
Quick answers — read this first
Does a draught make a reed diffuser smell stronger or weaker? Weaker where you are, and shorter-lived overall. A reed diffuser builds a small, slowly thickening body of scented air around itself, because oil evaporates from the sticks continuously and, in still air, what it releases at noon is still hanging about at four. A draught removes that air in a steady stream and replaces it with unscented air, so the build-up never gets to happen. Worse, moving air over the reeds sweeps away the saturated layer sitting on their surface, which raises the rate at which fresh oil evaporates. So you smell less and the bottle drains faster at the same time. That is the only common placement error that costs you on both sides of the ledger.

Where is the draught in my room coming from? In most Indian homes it is one of six things, and usually more than one at once. The split AC's louvres throwing a directed stream across the room. The gap under a closed door when the AC is running in the next room. A cross breeze between a window and a balcony door, which is the strongest draught most homes ever produce. The ceiling fan's downdraught spilling outward across a table. A bathroom or kitchen exhaust quietly pulling air out of the whole floor. And the main door, which moves a surprising amount of air every time it opens. Hold a strip of tissue at the spot where your bottle stands, and if it moves at all, that is your answer.

Where should I move the reed diffuser to? To the stillest spot in the part of the room you actually occupy. Not the geometric centre, and not a windowsill. In practice that means a bedside table on the side of the bed away from the AC, a side table beside the sofa rather than the console under the window, or a shelf in the lee of a wall or a cupboard where air is not being pushed past. Keep it at roughly seated or lying nose height rather than on the floor, and keep it out of direct sun. This is free, it takes two minutes, and it is genuinely the first thing to try. What it cannot do is make a passive bottle reach the far side of a room, so if that is the wish, an active diffuser from Rs 899 is the honest next step.
The short answer
Short answer: Weaker, and it costs you twice. A reed diffuser is passive: oil climbs the sticks and evaporates, and in still air the scented air slowly accumulates around the bottle. A draught removes that air continuously so it never builds, and it also sweeps the saturated layer off the reed surfaces, which raises evaporation and empties the bottle faster. Common Indian sources: a split AC's throw, the gap under a door, a window-to-balcony cross breeze, a fan's downdraught, an exhaust fan, the main door. Move the bottle to the stillest spot in the part of the room you use, at seated nose height, out of the sun. Reeds from Rs 749; if you want the whole room, an active ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299; for strong scent where you sit, the waterless SOSA Safar Rs 3,999. Why it smells near the bottle - at a glanceStep 1 - a reed diffuser is passive: oil evaporates, nothing pushes itStep 2 - so it is strongest at the bottle and fades with distanceStep 3 - whole room evenly? An active diffuser from ₹899Step 4 - strong where you sit or sleep? Safar ₹3,999Keep the reed too · from ₹749, no power needed
Nothing has gone wrong with your reed diffuser. A reed is a passive system: the oil climbs the sticks and evaporates at whatever rate your room's warmth and air movement allow, and no part of it pushes scent anywhere. That is exactly why it is lovely at arm's length and quiet across the room. What has changed is what you now want from it. Ambience near where the bottle stands is one job; a whole room that smells of it, or a strong true scent right where you sit, is a different job, and a different job needs a different tool. This guide explains the mechanism first, then tells you honestly which tool matches which wish.
Straight answer
Why is a draught the worst place to put a reed diffuser?
Because it is the one spot that takes away what a passive system has no way to replace, and makes the system pay for it. 1. A reed builds, it does not broadcast. Oil rises through the sticks and evaporates into the air touching them, so in a still room the scented air around the bottle slowly thickens over hours. That accumulation is the whole of what you smell. 2. A draught cancels the accumulation. A directed stream of air removes scented air and brings unscented air in to replace it, all day, so the concentration never rises above the trickle the reeds are producing at that exact moment. 3. It also raises the evaporation rate. Air moving across the reeds carries off the saturated layer clinging to their surface, so more oil leaves the sticks per hour. Your bottle empties sooner and you get nothing for it. 4. And it sends your fragrance somewhere else. Scented air goes where the draught goes, which is often the corridor, the next room or straight out of a window. Plenty of people discover the neighbours' side of the flat smells lovely while their own bedroom does not. What to do tonight. Hold a strip of tissue where the bottle stands. If it moves, move the bottle: to the stillest spot in the part of the room you genuinely sit or sleep in, at roughly seated nose height, away from the AC's throw, the door gap and the window, and out of direct sun. Keep the reed diffuser from ₹749 doing what it does beautifully. If what you want is the room itself to smell of it, that is a different job: an active Boond ₹899 or Sukoon ₹1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299, which is cheaper than our waterless unit and the honest first upgrade, with added humidity, some dilution and possible white dust in hard-water areas as the trade. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: a draught removes the scented air a reed slowly builds and speeds up evaporation at the same time, so you smell less and the bottle lasts less. Move it to still air at nose height (₹749); want the room itself? Active diffusion from ₹899. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

What a draught takes from you, and what it charges you for taking it

First what a still pocket of air is worth, then what a moving one costs, then where the scent actually ends up.

Why this happens in your room
The one placement error that costs you scent and bottle life together
1A reed builds scented air slowly; still air lets that build-up happen2A draught replaces that air continuously, so it never gets to thicken3Moving air over the reeds also raises evaporation - the bottle drains sooner4Move it to still air at nose height. Want the room? Active from Rs 899

1
What you lose
Still air is not empty air - it is where the fragrance lives
It helps to picture what a reed diffuser is actually doing, because it is nothing like a spray. There is no burst and no push. Oil travels up the sticks by capillary action and slips into the air touching them, molecule by molecule, at a pace set entirely by how warm the room is and how much the air moves. In a still room that quiet trickle adds up. What the reeds released an hour ago has not gone anywhere, so it is still contributing when the next hour's release arrives, and by the evening there is a genuine body of scented air sitting around the bottle. That accumulation is the entire product as far as your nose is concerned. It is why a closed guest room can smell wonderful when you open the door after two days, and why the same bottle in a corridor smells of almost nothing. So the first thing a draught takes from you is not scent, exactly. It is time. It refuses to let the hours stack up, and a passive system has nothing else to offer.
Tip: still air is a reed diffuser's only storage - a draught empties the shelf every few minutes.
2
What it charges
Moving air also makes the bottle empty faster
Here is the part that feels unfair, and it is worth understanding because it changes how people think about airflow. Right at the surface of each reed there is a thin layer of air that has become saturated with fragrance. While that layer sits there, it slows further evaporation, because the air next to the stick cannot hold much more. Move air across the reeds and you strip that layer away, exposing the surface to fresh, unsaturated air, and the rate at which oil leaves the sticks rises. That is why a reed diffuser standing in a breeze goes down noticeably quicker than an identical one on a sheltered shelf. So a draught does not simply fail to help. It takes the fragrance away from where you are, and it bills you for a faster-emptying bottle in return. A reed lasts about six to ten weeks, and where you land in that range depends heavily on this. Sheltered, still and normally warm sits at the long end. Under an AC vent or in a cross breeze sits at the short end, with less to show for it.
3
Where it goes
Your fragrance is not disappearing - it is going somewhere else
Scented air travels with whatever air it is part of, which means a draught is effectively a delivery service pointed away from you. If the stream runs from your window towards the bedroom door, the passage smells of your diffuser and your bed does not. If the exhaust fan in the attached bathroom is running, the whole room's air is being drawn quietly in that direction, and a bottle placed anywhere in the flow is scenting the ducting. If your split AC throws across the room, everything the reeds produce is taken to the far wall and diluted into the general volume in the process, arriving nowhere in particular. This is why people so often say the fragrance seems to work better in the next room, which sounds like a mystery and is really just plumbing. The fix is to place the bottle out of the flow entirely rather than trying to aim it, because you cannot aim a passive object. Put it in a sheltered pocket in the part of the room you occupy. And when you want the room itself to smell of something regardless of where the air is going, that needs a machine that generates its own movement - an ultrasonic or the waterless Safar.
Tip: you cannot aim a reed diffuser - you can only shelter it, and then sit near it.
The SOSA principle
A draught is not ventilation for your fragrance. It is a conveyor belt running the wrong way - taking scented air off to somewhere you are not, while quietly speeding up the bottle.
The only placement mistake that costs you on both sides at once: less scent where you sit, and fewer weeks in the bottle.

Start where you already are. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are passive: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 and Fresh Brew ₹849, with 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. They give you ambience near where the bottle stands, with no power, no noise and nothing that can fail, and they are still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. If you want the room itself to smell of it, that needs an active diffuser: Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Megh ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, or the Pack of 7 at 15ml for ₹1,799). That is the honest first upgrade for a single ordinary bedroom, and it costs less than the Safar. Its trade-off, in our own words: an ultrasonic mixes the fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. If you would rather have no water at all and want the scent strong and true in the space you actually occupy, the SOSA Safar ₹3,999 is waterless, cordless and rechargeable, diffusing pure undiluted oil by cold diffusion. For a large room or a connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 is the genuine whole-space answer at approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, and it is honestly more machine than a small bedroom needs.

The SOSA edit, passive to active

Whatever your room looks like, the logic is the same, and it has nothing to do with how big or smart your home is. A passive reed gives you scent near where it stands, and that is genuinely the right answer for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. An active diffuser moves scent into the air instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it, which is the only thing that turns "lovely next to the bottle" into "the room smells of it". Every SOSA product is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one honestly belongs.

Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with: turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ship with their own blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only, and the two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. A note from Sonal

There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.

So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have had this conversation hundreds of times, and I would much rather talk someone out of a purchase than sell them a disappointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and a line about where you actually sit or sleep in it - the bed, the desk, the sofa, the corner you read in - and we will tell you which of these you need, including when the answer is none of them. I read those messages myself. Everything is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your room gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out whether my reed diffuser is actually in a draught?
Hold a single strip of tissue paper or a thin piece of cloth at exactly the height and position where the bottle stands, and watch it for thirty seconds with the room in its normal state, so the AC on if it is usually on and the fan at its usual speed. If the strip drifts or flutters at all, that spot is in moving air. Do it again at two or three other candidate spots in the room and you will usually find one that is visibly stiller than the rest, which is where the bottle belongs. Check the obvious suspects while you are at it: the gap under the door, the line directly below the split AC's louvres, the path between a window and a balcony door, and anywhere within the ceiling fan's spill. This takes about two minutes, costs nothing, and is more useful than any amount of guessing about corners.
Is a gentle breeze not better than completely still air?
For a passive diffuser, no, and this is one of the most common misunderstandings we hear. The intuition is that moving air will carry the fragrance around the room, and it does move it, but it moves it by diluting it into a much larger body of air rather than delivering it anywhere in a form your nose can register. Concentration is what you smell, and spreading the same small output thinner in every direction lowers concentration everywhere at once, including where you are sitting. Still air lets the scent accumulate near the bottle to a level you actually notice. Air movement is genuinely useful when there is a machine generating enough scented air to spread, which is what an active diffuser does, and that is exactly why the same fan that ruins a reed's performance can help a machine's. The difference is whether anything is being pushed out in the first place.
My reed diffuser sits under the air conditioner. Is that the problem?
It is very likely the largest single factor, yes. A split AC does two things a reed diffuser dislikes at once: it throws a directed stream of air across the room, which strips the scented air from around the bottle and raises the evaporation rate off the reeds, and it cools and dries the air, which lowers the evaporation rate in a different way and changes how the fragrance is perceived. The combination usually reads as the diffuser having stopped working, when in fact it has simply been placed in the busiest air in the room. Move it to the opposite side, ideally in the lee of a headboard, a cupboard or a wall, at roughly the height your nose sits when you are in bed. Give it a week before judging, because your own nose adapts to a familiar smell within minutes and one evening tells you nothing reliable.
If I close the door and windows, will the reed diffuser work properly?
It will work better, and it still will not do the thing a machine does, so it is worth being clear about both halves. Closing the door and the windows slows the rate at which scented air leaves, which lets concentration build the way it does in a bathroom, and turning the fan off while nobody is in the room helps for the same reason. Most people notice a real difference within a day or two. What has not changed is that a reed is passive: it produces a gentle output and cannot push it anywhere, so the far side of a sealed room is still thin. There is also a limit we would not cross. Ventilation and fresh air matter more than fragrance does, particularly in a bedroom and particularly in the monsoon, and we would never suggest keeping a room shut to improve a scent. Improve what you can, then decide.
Would moving the diffuser fix the fact that I cannot smell it from across the room?
Moving it out of a draught will fix a surprising amount, and it will not fix that particular sentence, so here is the honest split. Getting the bottle out of moving air and into the part of the room you actually occupy usually takes a diffuser from something you have to lean over to something you notice when you sit down, which is a real change and it costs nothing. Getting a passive bottle to be noticeable across a room is not a placement problem at all, because nothing in a reed diffuser carries scent outward; it evaporates and waits. If across the room is where you want to smell it, the honest answer is an active diffuser: an ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 for the whole room evenly, or the waterless SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999 for strong, true scent in the space you personally sit or sleep in.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the passive-versus-active reasoning applies to any brand's products.

Facts verified August 2026: A reed diffuser is a passive system - oil travels up the reeds by capillary action and evaporates at the rate the room's temperature and air movement allow, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls away with distance. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Reed prices: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. An active diffuser adds energy to move fragrance into the air. SOSA's ultrasonic machines are Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh 6L (₹3,499); they run the water-based SOSA Hotel Collection, 15ml ₹299, 100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799. An ultrasonic mixes fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser with a 2000 mAh battery, diffusing pure undiluted oil with no water and no white dust; SOSA's own copy lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, work-from-home and gifting. It ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles: Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired; St. Regis Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired and Four Seasons Inspired; or W Hotels Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired and Westin Inspired. No square-foot or cubic-metre coverage figure is published for the Safar, so none is stated here or anywhere else by us; it is a personal-space diffuser, not a whole-room machine. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air system covering approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box. Format distinction: the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each arrive with their own blends, while the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and goes into the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than closed doors. Ventilation and cleaning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept room and never a substitute for either, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Questions about a specific room are answered on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
