The exchange rate: adding reeds raises projection roughly in step with throughput. Ten reeds in a 50ml is a noticeably louder room and roughly four to five weeks instead of six to eight.
The strength scale: Fresh Brew 9.5, Mountain Breeze 9.4, Morning Freshness 9.0, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm 8.9.
The one that is not a lever: a bigger bottle. 130ml lasts longer than 50ml; it is not louder at the same reed count.
2. Then spend reed count, knowingly. Going from six reeds to nine will raise projection noticeably and shorten the bottle roughly in proportion. That is a fair trade for a festive month or a dinner party week. It is an expensive habit year-round.
3. Do not buy a bigger bottle expecting a louder room. This is the commonest wasted purchase in the category. A 130ml at ₹1,349 holds more oil and therefore lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8. At the same six reeds it projects about the same. Size buys duration, not volume.
4. Buy strength where strength actually lives — in the composition. Fresh Brew sits at 9.5 and Mountain Breeze at 9.4 on our scale; Evening Calm sits at 8.9 because it is a sleep fragrance and is meant to.
5. For a genuinely large space, use two bottles rather than one heroic one. Two 50ml at opposite ends of an open living-dining beat a single 130ml in the middle, every time, because a reed diffuser is a point source with no propulsion.

Part one — why strength is a budget rather than a setting
An electrical device has a setting; a reed diffuser has a rate. Oil climbs the fibre by capillary action and evaporates off the exposed surface, and the rate at which it does that is fixed by three things — how much reed surface is exposed, how volatile the composition is, and how fast the air around the bottle is replaced. Everything you can do to make a room smell stronger is one of those three, and two of them cost you nothing while the third costs you weeks. Once you see it as a budget, the sensible order of operations becomes obvious, and the two purchases people most often make — a bigger bottle, and then a second bigger bottle — both drop off the list.
Garden Bloom₹799 · 8.9/10A reed diffuser does not project — it releases, and waits for the room to distribute. In an alcove, a closed cabinet or behind a sofa the fragrance pools within a foot of the glass and never reaches you, which is why so many people describe a bottle they can smell only up close. The correct placement is not the prettiest one: a console or shelf near a doorway or walkway, roughly waist to chest height, where people passing stir the air a few times an hour. Keep several feet between the bottle and a split AC or fan, because a direct draught does the opposite — it strips the reeds and empties the bottle weeks early while making the room smell of nothing much. Direct sunlight does the same by heating the oil.Part two — the SOSA strength scale, and what each number means in a room
We publish an internal strength rating for every reed composition because "strong" is not a property people can read off a note list. It is our own scale rather than an industry standard, and it describes projection in an ordinary Indian room at six reeds — not concentration, and not quality. A 9.5 is not better than an 8.9; it is louder, and loud is not always what a room wants.
| Scent | Notes | Strength | How it reads in a room | Best rooms | 50ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh Brew ★ | Coorg coffee · Kerala vanilla | 9.5 · warm-deep | Cosy and enveloping — the fullest presence in the range | Living rooms, kitchens, offices | ₹849 |
| Mountain Breeze | Himalayan pine · sage · Indian cedar | 9.4 · deep woody | Grounding and dry — loud with no sweetness anywhere in it | Bedrooms, home offices, yoga rooms, libraries | ₹849 |
| Morning Freshness | Malabar lemon · peppermint · eucalyptus | 9.0 · bright | Sharp and clear — reads louder than it measures because it is cold | Bathrooms, kitchens, home offices | ₹749 |
| Garden Bloom | British rose · night-blooming jasmine | 8.9 · floral | Rounded and hotel-like — presence without insistence | Entryways, living rooms | ₹799 |
| Evening Calm | Kashmir lavender · chamomile | 8.9 · softest | Deliberately quiet — built to help you sleep, not to announce itself | Bedrooms, nurseries, reading corners | ₹799 |
| The mistake the table exists to prevent: running Evening Calm in a living room and concluding that reed diffusers are weak. It is the softest thing we make, on purpose. If a hosting space is the job, start at 9.4 or 9.5 and work down. | |||||

Part three — the reed-count exchange rate, in plain numbers
Here is the trade stated as plainly as I can put it, using a 50ml bottle rated at six to eight weeks with its standard six reeds. Four reeds gives you a gentle room and a bottle that comfortably outlasts the stated window — the right setting for a small bedroom, a nursery or anyone sensitive to fragrance. Six reeds is the calibrated setting and the one every strength rating on this page refers to. Eight reeds is a noticeably fuller room and roughly five to six weeks. Ten reeds is as far as I would go in a 50ml, gives you the most presence the format can produce, and will empty the bottle in something like four to five weeks. None of these are faults, and all of them are reversible in ten seconds.
Two practical notes people rarely hear. First, reed count and flipping interact: more reeds means more surface accumulating heavy residue, so a ten-reed bottle wants flipping weekly without exception, where a four-reed bottle is forgiving. Second, you can stage it — run six reeds through an ordinary week and add three more on a Friday afternoon before people arrive, then take them out again on Sunday. That gets you a hosting-strength room for two days at almost no cost in bottle life, and it is what I do at home. Keep the spare reeds standing in a small glass rather than lying on a surface, because reed oil marks wood and stone.
And the honest boundary: there is a ceiling, and it is lower than a machine's. If you have flipped, placed the bottle in passing air, run ten reeds and moved to a 9.5 composition and the room still is not what you pictured, the format is the limit — not the fragrance. A reed diffuser is a constant, passive, low background by design. The thing that produces a strong room on demand is an ultrasonic machine such as the Sukoon at ₹1,899, and moving to one is not an admission that the reed failed. Most homes end up running both, because they do different jobs.
Part four — what to buy, in the order I would buy it
Everything above, arranged as a shopping decision. The first three lines cost nothing, and a good share of people never reach the fourth.
| Do this | What it changes | What it costs you | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Flip all six reeds, weekly ★ | Restores the delivery rate the bottle was designed for | Nothing | Free |
| 2. Move into passing air | Lets the room distribute what the reeds release | Nothing — and it often extends the bottle | Free |
| 3. Add two to four reeds | Raises projection immediately and reversibly | Roughly proportional bottle life — 8 weeks becomes 5 | Free |
| 4. Move up the scale — Fresh Brew or Mountain Breeze | 9.5 and 9.4 against 8.9 — the real strength difference | A new bottle, and a change of character | ₹849 |
| 5. Two bottles instead of one | Covers an open living-dining that no single point source will | Two 50ml, or a duo set | From ₹1,548 |
| 6. 300ml oil refill | Makes running nine or ten reeds affordable long-term | Nothing — it is the cheapest oil we sell | ₹2,399 · 8–11 months |
| Not a strength lever: a 130ml bottle | 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 — duration, not volume | Said plainly rather than sold as an upgrade | From ₹1,249 |
Versailles
I could make every reed diffuser in this range project harder tomorrow. The way you do it is not a secret — you raise the volatile fraction and you use a solvent that pushes it off the reed faster. The reason I do not is that both of those decisions come back to you in week three, as a fragrance that was thrilling on day one, thin by day ten, and slightly chemical by the time the Delhi heat gets into it. Anyone who has bought a cheap plug-in knows the arc.
So the range is calibrated to sit at a level it can hold for the whole life of the bottle, in a sealed AC flat, through a monsoon. That is a deliberate ceiling, and I would rather tell you where it is than let you discover it by spending. If you want more than the ceiling, the honest levers are the ones on this page — flip it, move it, add reeds, or choose a composition built louder.
The one thing I would ask you not to do is buy the 130ml hoping it will be louder. It will not be. It will last two or three times as long, which is a genuinely good reason to buy it and a completely different one. Everything is composed and handmade in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
