Layer one
The pocket: scent is densest exactly where it is made
Every fragrance in a room has to be released somewhere, and with a reed diffuser that somewhere is a few square inches of wet stick. Oil climbs the reeds by capillary action and evaporates from their surface into the air already touching them, and there the process ends - there is no fan, no pump, no heat and no pressure behind it. What happens next is entirely up to the room. Slow, random air movement will carry a little of that scented air outward, and it thins as it goes because it is mixing into ever more unscented air. The third layer is not a layer of scent so much as a route out of the room. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Why can my husband smell the diffuser when I cannot, in the same room?
Usually because you are sampling different layers of the same air, and partly because noses adapt at different speeds. Fragrance in an unmixed room sits in a pocket around the bottle and a warm band that has risen toward the ceiling, so a taller person walking upright through the room passes through more scented air than someone sitting on a sofa or lying in bed. Someone who has just come in from outside also gets a far more honest reading than someone who has been in the room for an hour, because the nose stops reporting a steady background smell after a while - that is ordinary adaptation, not a fault in anyone. The practical test is to leave the room for ten minutes and walk back in. If it is obvious on re-entry and gone again within a minute, the fragrance is present and your nose has simply settled. If it is faint even on re-entry, you are outside the pocket and it is a distribution problem.
Should I put the reed diffuser higher up to stop it drifting above me?
Higher than the floor, yes. Higher than you, no. The useful principle is to start the fragrance at the height you actually breathe at, because it will only rise from there. For a bedroom that means a bedside table at roughly the height of your head when you are sitting up in bed. For a sofa it means the side table beside the armrest, not the top of a tall bookshelf. Putting the bottle on a high shelf takes the whole pocket up above head height and hands most of it to the ceiling band before you ever get a chance at it, which is why a diffuser on a wardrobe top so often seems to have stopped working. Also keep it off the floor: floor level is the coolest, least mobile air in the room and the scent has the entire height of the room to climb through before it reaches you.
Does a taller ceiling make the layering worse?
It makes the ceiling band further away and it adds air, so yes, in both senses. The same 150 sq ft bedroom holds 1,350 cubic feet under a 9 ft ceiling, which is about 38 cubic metres; 1,500 cubic feet under a 10 ft ceiling, about 42; and 1,650 cubic feet under an 11 ft ceiling, about 47. So every extra foot of height is roughly another ten per cent of air for the same bottle to scent, and it is air stacked above you rather than beside you. Older flats and houses with generous ceilings are quietly harder to scent than their floor plans suggest, and the fragrance that rises into that extra height is doing nothing for anyone. None of that is fixable by the bottle, which is one more reason a tall room is a good candidate for an active diffuser rather than a second passive one.
Is this why the room smells stronger first thing in the morning?
Very likely, and it is a satisfying piece of evidence for the layering explanation. Overnight the room is closed, the fan may be off or on low, and nobody is walking through, so the air is about as still as it ever gets and scent accumulates instead of being cleared. Your nose has also been asleep and has not been adapting to the smell for hours, so you get an honest reading the moment you wake. Then the door opens, the fan goes on, people move through, and within an hour the accumulated fragrance has been thinned and carried off faster than the reeds can replace it. Nothing about the bottle changed between six and eight in the morning. What changed is how much the room is disturbing its own air, and a passive diffuser has no way to work harder when that happens.
Will an active diffuser make the room smell evenly everywhere, honestly?
It gets far closer, and the honest word is closer rather than perfect. An active diffuser keeps releasing scent into air that is already moving, so instead of one dense pocket and a dead middle you get fragrance being continuously mixed through the room, and the difference between standing at the machine and standing at the far wall becomes small enough that most people stop noticing it. It will still not be laboratory-uniform, because doors open, fans run and rooms are not sealed boxes. Match the machine to the volume and you will not notice the gap: an ultrasonic from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from Rs 299 for one ordinary bedroom, the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for a large room or a connected open-plan volume of up to approximately 1000 cubic metres.
