Nine times out of ten it has not stopped, you have stopped noticing it, and a visitor walking in will still comment on it. Your sense of smell adapts to any constant background scent within minutes and then edits it out, which is why week one is vivid and week three feels like nothing - and it is why the test that settles this is to leave the room for ten minutes and pay attention to your first breath on the way back in. This is a genuinely different problem from a reed diffuser that does not reach across the room, so it needs a different answer. Below are the three real causes, in the order they actually occur.
Quick answers — read this first
Why did my reed diffuser stop working after the first week? In most cases it did not stop, you adapted to it. Human smell is built to notice change rather than constants, so a scent that is continuously present gets filtered out of your conscious perception within minutes and stays filtered out as long as you remain in the room. That is olfactory adaptation, it happens to everyone, and it is why guests still say your home smells lovely while you smell nothing at all. The way to check is to leave the room for ten minutes, go outside or into a different part of the house, and then walk back in and pay attention to the very first breath. If it is there on that first breath, the diffuser is working and your nose has simply tuned it out. Two other things can also be true: reeds reach full saturation in the first days so week one is genuinely the peak, and reeds do eventually clog while the oil level drops.
How do I tell if my reed diffuser has really stopped or I just cannot smell it? Use the ten-minute test and then look at the bottle. Leave the room for at least ten minutes, ideally step outside into different air, then come back and judge only your first breath, because after two or three breaths adaptation has set in again. If you smell it on that first breath, nothing is wrong. If you do not, check the physical evidence: has the oil level in the bottle dropped noticeably since you set it up, and do the reeds look dry, dull or dusty rather than darkened with oil at the top. A dropped level with tired-looking reeds means it is genuinely nearing the end of its life, and a SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. You can also ask someone who has just arrived from outside, which is the fastest honest answer available to you.
Is it normal for a reed diffuser to be strongest in the first week? Yes, and it is a real effect rather than an illusion. When you first put dry reeds into the oil they absorb it along their whole exposed length over the first day or two, and until they are fully saturated the rate at which fragrance leaves them is still climbing. Once saturated, the diffuser settles into a steady evaporation rate set by your room's temperature and air movement, and that steady rate is lower than the peak of those first days, particularly if you flipped the reeds at the start. So the drop from week one to week two is partly your nose adapting and partly the diffuser genuinely settling from a peak to a plateau. Neither is a fault. If you want the scent to keep announcing itself rather than becoming a background, an active diffuser run in bursts on a timer is the honest tool, from Rs 899 with a Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299.
The short answer
Short answer: Usually because you stopped noticing it, not because it stopped. Olfactory adaptation filters out any constant background scent within minutes, which is why visitors still comment on it while you smell nothing - leave the room for ten minutes and judge only your first breath on returning. Two other causes are real: reeds saturate fully in the first days, so week one genuinely is the peak before it settles to a steady rate, and reeds do eventually clog while the oil level drops. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Flip the reeds, or fit fresh ones. If you want scent that keeps being noticed, an active diffuser run in bursts is the answer, from Rs 899 with the water-based Hotel Collection at Rs 299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: keep the reed from ₹749 for ambience near where it stands; an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 when you want the whole room evenly; the SOSA Safar (₹3,999, waterless and cordless, three hotel-inspired blends included) when you want it strong and true in the space you sit in; the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for a large or open-plan room.
Talk to us: WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and where you actually sit or sleep in it, and we will place you on the ladder honestly.
Nothing has gone wrong with your reed diffuser. A reed is a passive system: the oil climbs the sticks and evaporates at whatever rate your room's warmth and air movement allow, and no part of it pushes scent anywhere. That is exactly why it is lovely at arm's length and quiet across the room. What has changed is what you now want from it. Ambience near where the bottle stands is one job; a whole room that smells of it, or a strong true scent right where you sit, is a different job, and a different job needs a different tool. This guide explains the mechanism first, then tells you honestly which tool matches which wish.
My reed diffuser was wonderful for a week and now I smell nothing. What has actually happened?
Three things can produce that, and they are not equally likely. 1. Olfactory adaptation, by far the most common. Your sense of smell is designed to report change, not constants, so a fragrance that is always present is filtered out of conscious perception within minutes of you entering the room and stays filtered out while you are there. Nothing has weakened. You have stopped being told about it. The proof is that a visitor arriving from outside will still notice it immediately, and the test is to leave the room for ten minutes and judge only your first breath on the way back in. 2. The saturation curve, which is genuine. Dry reeds soak up oil over the first day or two, and while they are filling the evaporation rate is still rising, so those first days really are the peak. After that the diffuser settles into a steady rate set by your room's warmth and air movement, and steady is quieter than peak. That is normal behaviour, not a fault. 3. Clogging and depletion, which happen later. Over the weeks dust and heavier fragrance components gather in the reeds' pores and slow the flow, and the oil level in the bottle drops. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks, so if the level is low and the reeds look dry and dull, it is simply reaching the end. What to do. Do the ten-minute test first. If it passes, nothing needs buying. If it fails, turn the reeds over, or fit fresh reeds, or replace the bottle - reed diffusers from ₹749. And if what you really want is a fragrance that keeps announcing itself rather than becoming furniture, that is a case for an active diffuser run in short bursts: a Boond ₹899 or Sukoon ₹1,899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299, or the waterless SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for the space you sit in. One line: most likely you adapted rather than it stopping - leave the room ten minutes and judge the first breath back. Also real: reeds peak while saturating, then settle, and eventually clog. About 6 to 10 weeks. Reeds ₹749; bursts on a timer from ₹899. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The honest ladder in one line: keep the reed diffuser from ₹749 for ambience near where it stands; an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 when you want the whole room, water trade-offs and all; the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999, waterless and cordless, when you want it strong and true in the space you actually sit in; the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 when the space is large or open-plan. Three real causes, in order of how likely they are
Adaptation first, because it explains most cases, then the saturation curve, then genuine depletion.
Why this happens in your room
Three causes, and the ten-minute test that separates them
Keep the reed where it already works, from ₹749. If you want the whole room, an ultrasonic from ₹899 with the water-based Hotel Collection is the honest and cheaper first upgrade. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is waterless and cordless.
Olfactory adaptation - you did not stop smelling it, you stopped noticing it
This is the answer for the great majority of people who write to us with this exact question, and it is worth understanding properly because it will change how you judge every fragrance you ever buy. Human smell is a change detector. It exists to alert you to something new in the air, and to do that efficiently it suppresses anything constant, so a steady background scent fades from conscious perception within minutes and stays suppressed for as long as you remain in it. It is the same reason you cannot smell your own home when you walk in after work but can smell a friend's instantly, and the same reason you stop noticing your own perfume an hour after applying it while everyone around you still does. Nothing has changed in the air. Your brain has simply decided the information is no longer worth reporting. The strongest evidence that this is what is happening to you is social: ask anyone who arrives from outside, and if they comment on the fragrance without being prompted, your diffuser is working perfectly and it is your nose that has moved on. Adaptation also explains why week one felt so alive. In week one the scent was new, and new is exactly what your nose is built to report.
Tip: leave the room for ten minutes, come back and judge only the first breath - after three breaths adaptation has already returned.
2
Cause two
The first days genuinely are the peak, and then it settles
The second cause is real physics rather than perception, and it accounts for a smaller but genuine part of the drop. When you first stand dry reeds in the oil they begin absorbing it by capillary action along their whole exposed length, and that soaking takes a day or two. While it is happening, the amount of oil sitting at the surface of the sticks is rising, and so is the rate at which fragrance evaporates into the room. If you also turned the reeds over during setup, as most instructions suggest, you exposed a fully soaked length to the air all at once and produced a short, deliberate surge. So the opening days of a reed diffuser's life really are its loudest, and nothing after that is going to match them. Once the reeds are saturated the system reaches equilibrium: oil arrives at the surface at roughly the rate it leaves, and the diffuser settles to a steady output governed by your room's temperature and air movement rather than by the novelty of the setup. That plateau is what a reed diffuser is meant to give you for the rest of its life. It is quieter than the peak by design, and knowing that in advance turns a disappointment into an expectation.
3
Cause three
Reeds do eventually clog, and the level does eventually drop
The third cause is the one people assume first and it is genuinely the least likely in week two, though it becomes the right answer later on. Reeds work because they are porous, and over time those pores collect dust from the room and the heavier, less volatile components of the fragrance that do not evaporate as readily as the lighter ones. As the pores fill, oil travels up more slowly, less of it reaches the surface, and output falls. At the same time the bottle is emptying, and a lower level means less oil and often less soaked stick length above it. This is why the honest check is physical rather than sensory: look at the level in the bottle and look at the tops of the reeds. Oil-darkened, damp-looking reeds and a level that has clearly dropped means the thing is working and simply ageing; dry, pale, dusty reeds with a low level means it is near the end. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Turning the reeds over every week or two helps, because it brings soaked, less clogged sections to the air, and fitting fresh reeds gives a clearer lift than any amount of flipping. Beyond that, a new bottle from ₹749 is the answer, and keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat will make the next one last better.
Tip: look at the bottle before you judge with your nose - the oil level tells you more than your perception does.
The SOSA principle
The most common reason a fragrance seems to stop is not the fragrance. It is that your nose has been told about it enough times and has quietly stopped mentioning it.
Adaptation, then the saturation curve, then real depletion at about 6 to 10 weeks. Diagnose in that order and you will rarely spend money you did not need to.

The ladder from passive to active, in order - tap any image to see it on the store
Start where you already are. Reed diffusers from ₹749 are passive: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849 and Fresh Brew ₹849, with 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. They give you ambience near where the bottle stands, with no power, no noise and nothing that can fail, and they are still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. If you want the room itself to smell of it, that needs an active diffuser: Boond ₹899, Sukoon ₹1,899 or Megh ₹3,499 running the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, or the Pack of 7 at 15ml for ₹1,799). That is the honest first upgrade for a single ordinary bedroom, and it costs less than the Safar. Its trade-off, in our own words: an ultrasonic mixes the fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave a fine white dust on nearby surfaces. If you would rather have no water at all and want the scent strong and true in the space you actually occupy, the SOSA Safar ₹3,999 is waterless, cordless and rechargeable, diffusing pure undiluted oil by cold diffusion. For a large room or a connected open-plan space, the SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 is the genuine whole-space answer at approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, and it is honestly more machine than a small bedroom needs.

The SOSA edit, passive to active
Whatever your room looks like, the logic is the same, and it has nothing to do with how big or smart your home is. A passive reed gives you scent near where it stands, and that is genuinely the right answer for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. An active diffuser moves scent into the air instead of waiting for the air to come and collect it, which is the only thing that turns "lovely next to the bottle" into "the room smells of it". Every SOSA product is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is where each one honestly belongs.
The SOSA edit, passive to active
Which one matches what you actually want - ambience near the bottle, a whole room, or strong scent where you sit
No power, no noise, nothing to fail. Still the right product for a bathroom, a bedside table, a study or a guest room. Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml from ₹1,249
The honest first upgrade for a whole room, and cheaper than the Safar. Runs the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799). It mixes oil with water, so it adds humidity, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust
Active and waterless · the personal space you occupy
Cordless, rechargeable 2000 mAh, cold diffusion of pure undiluted oil: no water, no dilution, no white dust. SOSA lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, and work-from-home. Ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends. A personal-space diffuser with strong near-field projection, not a whole-room machine
Waterless cold-air to approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, Bluetooth app and timer, four hotel-inspired blends included. The genuine whole-space answer, and honestly oversized for a small bedroom
₹11,999
Honest notes before you spend anything. A reed diffuser is passive, and its scent is strongest at the bottle. That is the mechanism working, not a fault, and not a sign you bought the wrong thing: oil climbs the reeds and evaporates, and nothing in the design pushes that scent across a room. More reeds increase evaporation, not reach. Adding sticks makes the air near the bottle stronger and empties the bottle faster; it adds no force to carry fragrance to the other side of the room, so you get a more intense spot and a shorter-lived diffuser. Placement optimises a passive system but cannot make it active. Moving the bottle out of a direct draught, away from an open window, up to roughly seated-nose height rather than on the floor, and into the part of the room you actually use, all genuinely help - and none of them convert passive diffusion into active diffusion. Ventilation and cleaning come first. If a room smells stale, damp or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it; fragrance laid on top of that only makes a more complicated smell, and it never substitutes for either. Homes are shared. Households include children, elderly relatives, pregnant family members and pets, all of whom breathe this air far longer than a visitor does, so gentle dosing is the default and the settings we suggest are lower than any machine can run. Anyone reporting a headache is a recalibration signal, not a complaint to argue with: turn it down or turn it off, and tell us. The Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each ship with their own blends; the Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and belongs in the ultrasonic machines only, and the two formats are not interchangeable. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. If you want the whole room to smell of something when you walk in, that needs a machine that actively moves scent into the air, and the honest first step there is one of our ultrasonics, which costs less than our waterless diffuser does. If you want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, with no water and no dilution, that is the Safar. And if your living space is genuinely large or open-plan, that is the Vaayu, which I will happily tell you is far too much machine for a 10 by 12 bedroom.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and I have had this conversation hundreds of times, and I would much rather talk someone out of a purchase than sell them a disappointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with your room's approximate size and a line about where you actually sit or sleep in it - the bed, the desk, the sofa, the corner you read in - and we will tell you which of these you need, including when the answer is none of them. I read those messages myself. Everything is made in India, cruelty-free and vegan, and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your room gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom.
Frequently asked questions
How long does olfactory adaptation take to wear off?
For most people a short break of ten to fifteen minutes in different air is enough to reset it usefully, and stepping outside works better than moving to another room in the same home because the whole home shares a background. That is why the ten-minute test is worded the way it is: leave, breathe something else, come back, and judge only the very first breath as you cross the threshold, because by the second or third breath the suppression has already begun again. A stronger reset happens overnight, which is why the morning is often the moment people notice their own home again. None of this means the fragrance is weak. It means your perception of any constant scent is temporary by design, and that is true of the most expensive perfume in the world as much as it is of a Rs 749 reed diffuser. Judging a diffuser by whether you can smell it while sitting in the room all evening is the one test guaranteed to give you the wrong answer.
Should I turn the reeds over, and how often?
Yes, turning them over is worth doing, roughly every week or two rather than daily. Flipping brings the soaked section that was sitting inside the bottle up into the air, which exposes freshly oiled and less clogged surface and gives a genuine, noticeable lift for a while afterwards. It also uses the oil faster, so flipping every day will simply shorten the life of the bottle for a series of short-lived boosts. Handle the reeds with a tissue and wipe any drips off the bottle and the surface underneath, because fragrance oil can mark wood and painted finishes. If flipping produces almost nothing, the reeds are likely clogged rather than the oil being finished, and fitting fresh reeds will do more than another flip. Beyond that, a SOSA reed diffuser runs about 6 to 10 weeks, so if you are at the far end of that window a new bottle from Rs 749 is the honest answer.
Does the weather or the season change how my reed diffuser performs?
It does, and it can look exactly like a diffuser fading when nothing is wrong with it. Evaporation from the reeds is driven by temperature and air movement, so the same bottle is livelier in a warm month than in a cool one, and quieter in a room where the air conditioning runs all day than in the same room with the AC off. Humidity plays a part too, since scent tends to hang in damp air and settle out faster in very dry air. Monsoon, peak summer and an air-conditioned winter therefore each give you a slightly different reading of the identical product. If your first week was in one set of conditions and week three is in another, some of what you are hearing as a drop is the season rather than the bottle. This is one more reason to check the oil level before concluding anything, because the level is the only measure that does not change with the weather or with your nose.
Could my room itself be the reason I stop noticing the fragrance?
It can be, in two ways worth checking. First, if the room has a competing background smell, from cooking, damp, a bin, shoes, laundry or pets, your nose has more to sort through and a low-level fragrance is easily lost underneath it. Ventilation and cleaning come first in every case: air the room, deal with the source, and the same bottle will read better afterwards, because fragrance is a finishing layer on air that is already fresh and never a substitute for fixing what is causing the smell. Second, if the room is large or has a fan running constantly, the fragrance may simply never build to a level your nose registers from where you sit, which is a reach problem rather than a fading problem. Those two have different answers, so it is worth knowing which one you have. Send us the room details on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and we will help you work it out.
If I want to keep noticing the fragrance, what should I buy?
An active diffuser used in bursts, because intermittent scent is what your nose keeps reporting while continuous scent is what it filters out. An ultrasonic run for a while rather than all day gives you that rhythm, and it also gives you the room rather than just the corner: a Boond at Rs 899 with a 15ml water-based Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299 comes to Rs 1,198, and a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with the same bottle is Rs 2,198. Both cost less than the waterless SOSA Safar at Rs 3,999, and the trade-off is that an ultrasonic mixes oil with water, adding humidity, possibly diluting the scent, and in hard-water areas leaving white dust. If you would rather have no water and want it strong and true right where you sit or sleep, the Safar is the one, and it ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends. Gentle dosing is the default in any home, and if anyone reports a headache, turn it down or off.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the passive-versus-active reasoning applies to any brand's products.
Facts verified August 2026: A reed diffuser is a passive system - oil travels up the reeds by capillary action and evaporates at the rate the room's temperature and air movement allow, so concentration is highest at the bottle and falls away with distance. A SOSA reed diffuser lasts about 6 to 10 weeks. Reed prices: Morning Freshness ₹749, Garden Bloom ₹799, Evening Calm ₹799, Mountain Breeze ₹849, Fresh Brew ₹849; 130ml sizes from ₹1,249. An active diffuser adds energy to move fragrance into the air. SOSA's ultrasonic machines are Boond (₹899), Sukoon (₹1,899) and Megh 6L (₹3,499); they run the water-based SOSA Hotel Collection, 15ml ₹299, 100ml refill ₹999, Pack of 7 at 15ml ₹1,799. An ultrasonic mixes fragrance with water, which adds humidity to the room, can dilute the scent, and in hard-water areas can leave white dust. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion perfume diffuser with a 2000 mAh battery, diffusing pure undiluted oil with no water and no white dust; SOSA's own copy lists it as best for car, handbag, work desk, bedside, hotel and travel, work-from-home and gifting. It ships with three hotel-inspired waterless blends, chosen as one of three bundles: Ritz-Carlton Inspired, Westin Inspired and 1 Hotels Inspired; St. Regis Inspired, Shangri-La Inspired and Four Seasons Inspired; or W Hotels Inspired, Ritz-Carlton Inspired and Westin Inspired. No square-foot or cubic-metre coverage figure is published for the Safar, so none is stated here or anywhere else by us; it is a personal-space diffuser, not a whole-room machine. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air system covering approximately 1000m³ of connected volume, with a Bluetooth app and timer, and it ships with four hotel-inspired waterless blends included in the box. Format distinction: the Safar and the Vaayu run waterless oil and each arrive with their own blends, while the ₹299 Hotel Collection bottle is water-based and goes into the ultrasonic machines only. The two formats are not interchangeable. Scent perception is personal and varies between people in the same room, and coverage figures assume connected air volume rather than closed doors. Ventilation and cleaning come first; fragrance is an addition to a well-kept room and never a substitute for either, and we make no health, therapeutic or air-purification claims. SOSA blends are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. Made in India, cruelty-free and vegan. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Questions about a specific room are answered on WhatsApp: +91 96192 18531.
