A gradient is not a symptom, it is the definition
Picture the air immediately around the reeds. Oil has climbed the sticks and is evaporating into that thin layer, saturating it, and that layer is the most fragrant air in your home. Now ask what could possibly move that fragrance to the far wall. There are only two candidates. The first is molecular diffusion, the natural drift of molecules from a crowded place to a less crowded one, and in still air it is extraordinarily slow over the distances a room presents - it is the same process that keeps sugar sitting at the bottom of an unstirred cup. The second is bulk air movement: convection from a warm body, a lamp or an appliance, a draught from a door, a fan. That does carry fragrance outward, but it carries it in whatever direction it happens to be going, and it dilutes as it goes. Neither candidate can produce equality of concentration; both can only produce a spreading, thinning tail leading away from a peak. So the shape is fixed: maximum at the source, falling with distance. A gradient is not evidence that something has gone wrong. It is a picture of the mechanism working exactly as designed.

The tests
Run every adjustment you can think of against that shape
This is where most money gets spent, so it is worth testing each idea honestly. There is a difference between a fragrance being good and a fragrance reaching you, and almost nobody is told what it is. When someone writes to me and says the reed diffuser smells wonderful up close but they cannot smell it from the bed, my first answer is always the same: nothing is wrong, and you did not buy the wrong thing. A reed diffuser is a passive object. It holds oil, the reeds draw it up, the room's warmth and air take it away at their own pace. It has no way of carrying scent to you, and it was never built to.
So the real question is not which fragrance is stronger. It is which job you want done. If you want a quiet, pleasant presence in the corner of a bathroom or beside a bed, a reed is still the most elegant thing I sell, and I would rather you kept it than replaced it. Does flipping the reeds regularly improve the spread at all?
It improves the rate briefly, not the spread ever. The exposed ends of the reeds gradually saturate and slow down, so turning them puts fresher, more absorbent surface into the air and evaporation lifts for a day or two before settling back. That is a legitimate small maintenance habit and worth doing if the bottle has gone quiet. What it cannot touch is distribution, because a faster source simply builds a slightly taller peak in exactly the same place. One caution worth stating: flipping frequently uses the oil up faster, so a bottle you flip every few days will not reach the same six to ten weeks as one you leave alone. Flip when it genuinely feels flat, not on a schedule, and do not expect the far end of the room to change.
What if I buy a much more concentrated reed oil?
You will get a more concentrated smell at the bottle and the same silence at the door, and this is the single most useful sentence we can offer anyone shopping for a fix. Fragrance concentration determines how strong the source is. Reach is determined by whether anything is carrying the scent outward, and in a passive system nothing is. So a stronger oil raises the peak of the gradient without extending its tail, which means you have paid more to intensify the exact spot that was already working. Buy a more concentrated or more expensive oil because you love how it smells or you want the bottle to last differently, both of which are good reasons. Do not buy it to solve distribution, because concentration and distribution are separate variables and only one of them is on sale in that bottle.
If two reed diffusers do not work, would four?
Four gives you four peaks and three thin corridors between them, and it costs Rs 2,996 at Rs 749 each. It is a fair question and the arithmetic answers it cleanly: passive sources do not merge into a plateau because none of them is pushing outward, so what you build is a landscape of hills rather than a level field. There is one arrangement where multiple reeds genuinely make sense, and it is not this one: if you have several distinct places you actually spend time - a bedside, a reading chair, a bathroom, an entryway console - then a reed at each is a perfectly sensible way to serve each of those spots, and we would not talk you out of it. What we will say plainly is that if your goal is one room reading the same throughout, the money spent on the third and fourth bottle buys a Boond at Rs 899 with a Hotel Collection bottle at Rs 299 instead, and that machine does the job you are describing.
Does a reed diffuser eventually even out a small closed room by itself?
In a small enough, still enough, closed enough room, it effectively does, and that is the honest exception to the word never. Over several hours in a shut bathroom or a small study, the room's slow convection carries fragrance around a volume that is tiny to begin with, and the gradient becomes shallow enough that the whole space reads as scented. This is why a bathroom feels like walking into a jar. The reason it does not scale is that the gradient's shape has not changed at all, only the distance over which it has to fall. Give the same bottle a 48 cubic metre bedroom instead of a 17 cubic metre bathroom, add a ceiling fan removing air and a door that opens, and the shallow section never forms. So the exception proves the rule rather than breaking it: small and sealed hides the gradient, it does not remove it.
Should I feel like I wasted my money on the reed diffuser?
Not for a moment, and we would say this even if it cost us the next sale. A reed diffuser does something no machine does: it scents a space with no power, no noise, no water, no tank to clean and nothing that can fail, for about six to ten weeks, quietly and beautifully, at a price that makes it reasonable to have one in several rooms. In a bathroom it is not a compromise, it is the best tool available. On a bedside table or an entryway console it gives exactly the moment of fragrance those places want. What has changed is not the quality of what you bought, it is what you now want from your home, and that new wish needs a different kind of device. Keep the reed where it shines and add active diffusion where you want a room. That is two products doing two jobs, which is not a mistake in either direction.
