Every coverage figure published in this industry, ours included, assumes one connected volume of air. That single sentence explains most of the disappointment people have with scent machines, and it explains something brokers see constantly without naming it: the bedrooms in a beautifully presented flat smell of nothing at all. A machine cannot push scent through a closed door. Not slowly, not eventually, not on a higher setting. A 2,000 sq ft flat with three bedrooms shut is not a 566 cubic metre space - it is a connected living, dining and kitchen volume plus three sealed boxes, and the arithmetic you did before you bought was describing a property that does not exist on the day.
Quick answers — read this first
Why does a closed door stop a diffuser working? Because scent moves through a home on the home's own air currents, and a closed door removes almost all of the opening those currents were using. An open internal door is roughly 0.9 m wide by 2.1 m tall, which is about 1.89 square metres of aperture. Close it and you are left with the undercut, typically around 10 mm across the same 900 mm leaf, which is about 0.009 square metres - in the region of one two-hundredth of the opening. That is not a slower route to the same result. On the timescale of a property viewing it is a wall, which is why a room behind a closed door smells of itself and not of whatever the machine in the living room is doing.
Does a coverage rating apply to a whole flat or just connected rooms? Connected rooms only. A rating of roughly 1000 cubic metres, like the SOSA Vaayu's at Rs 11,999, describes a single connected volume of air that the machine can distribute into using natural airflow. It has never described a floor plan. So the useful number for a listing is not its total volume but the volume that is genuinely open to itself during the viewing: hall, living, dining, kitchen and passage in most flats. A 2,000 sq ft apartment whose connected front-of-house is around 1,280 sq ft is about 363 cubic metres of connected air rather than 566, and the same machine setting that suited 566 is now over-dosing 363 - which is how a living room ends up smelling stronger than anybody intended.
What should I do about bedrooms that stay closed before a viewing? One of two things, and both are legitimate. Either open every internal door about an hour before the appointment so the property becomes one volume of air and the machine can do what its rating describes, which also equalises temperature and clears the closed-room smell that bedrooms develop. Or accept that the bedrooms are a separate job and treat them as such: a reed diffuser from Rs 749 on a bedside table, placed several days ahead so it has opened up, needs no power and no set-up and is working on the days you are not at the property. What does not work is turning the living-room machine up and hoping.
The short answer
Short answer: Every coverage rating assumes one connected volume of air, so a closed door defeats it. An open internal door is about 0.9 m x 2.1 m, roughly 1.89 square metres of aperture; closed, the undercut leaves around 0.009 square metres, about one two-hundredth - a wall on the timescale of a viewing. A 2,000 sq ft flat with three bedrooms shut is not 566 cubic metres: it is a connected volume of roughly 363 cubic metres plus three sealed boxes, so the setting that suited the whole flat now over-doses the living room while the bedrooms smell of nothing. Fix it two ways: open every internal door about an hour ahead, or scent bedrooms separately with reeds from Rs 749 placed days in advance. Vaayu Rs 11,999. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for premises to ~1000m³; reeds from ₹749 for a single room; cabin systems from ₹1,899; HVAC from ₹25,999.

Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
I run the machine in the living room and the bedrooms still smell of nothing. Why?
Because the bedroom doors were shut, and a coverage rating has never described a floor plan. 1. The rule. Every coverage figure in this industry describes ONE CONNECTED VOLUME OF AIR. The SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated to approximately 1000m³ of connected air, and SOSA's own copy says one unit covers 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft evenly, using the room's natural airflow. Natural airflow is the operative phrase: the machine nebulises, and the property's own currents distribute. Remove the currents and you remove the distribution. 2. What a door does. An open internal door is roughly 0.9m wide and 2.1m tall - about 1.89m² of opening. Closed, all that is left is the undercut, perhaps 10mm across a 900mm leaf, about 0.009m², in the region of one two-hundredth of the aperture. That is not a slow route, it is a wall for the ninety minutes you care about. 3. What that does to your arithmetic. Take a 2,000 sq ft flat: total volume at 10 ft is 20,000 cu ft = about 566m³. Now take out three bedrooms of 240, 180 and 150 sq ft with three attached bathrooms at about 50 sq ft each - 720 sq ft gone. The connected hall, living, dining, kitchen and passage is about 1,280 sq ft, which is 12,800 cu ft, and 12,800 / 35.3 = about 363m³. You sized for 566 and you are scenting 363, so the front of the flat runs stronger than you intended while the bedrooms get nothing. Both halves of that are bad in a viewing. 4. Fix one: open the doors. Every internal door open about an hour before the appointment, so the flat becomes one volume, the machine does what its rating describes, and the closed-room smell that bedrooms develop clears at the same time. 5. Fix two: treat them separately.Reed diffusers from ₹749 on a bedside table or a bathroom counter, placed several days ahead so they have opened up - no power, no socket, no set-up on the day, and they work while you are not there. Never put a room-scale machine inside a bedroom and shut the door; a 240 sq ft bedroom is about 68m³ and will be overwhelmed. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with the layout and which doors stay shut. One line: ratings describe connected air, and a closed door leaves about one two-hundredth of the opening - so a 2,000 sq ft flat with three bedrooms shut is roughly 363m³ of connected air plus three sealed boxes. The connected-volume rule, and what a door actually does
Three things: what a coverage rating is actually promising, what a closed door does to the aperture in physical terms, and the two answers that work in a property you are showing rather than living in.
Why this works
The connected-volume rule, applied to a viewing
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
Read any coverage specification carefully and you will find it describes a volume, not a property. The SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated to approximately 1000m³, and SOSA's own product copy is unusually explicit about the mechanism: one unit covers 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft evenly, using the room's natural airflow. Waterless cold-air nebulising produces an extremely fine dry particle that stays suspended and travels with the air already moving in the room. It does not pressurise a house. It does not force anything anywhere. It puts scent into the air and the building's own convection, temperature differences, door movement and foot traffic carry it. That is a strength - it is why the fragrance is even rather than concentrated near the machine, and why there is no wet residue on marble, wood or fresh paint - and it is also the exact reason a wall stops it, a floor stops it, and a closed door stops it. Every machine in this category, at every price, works this way. So when a broker says the machine did not cover the flat, the machine almost always covered the volume it was in, and the flat was not one volume.
Tip: the rating describes air that is connected to itself - the moment you close a door you have two volumes and one machine.
2
The door
An open door is about two hundred times the opening of a closed one
It is worth being physical about this, because the phrase closed door sounds softer than what it actually does. A standard internal door leaf is about 0.9m wide and 2.1m tall, so an open doorway is roughly 1.89 square metres of aperture through which air, and everything carried in it, can move freely in both directions. Close that door and what remains is the undercut at the bottom, typically somewhere around 10mm to accommodate flooring, across the same 900mm width - about 0.009 square metres. That is in the region of one two-hundredth of the open aperture, and it sits at floor level where the air is coolest and least mobile, which makes it less useful still. There is some exchange through it over many hours, driven by temperature differences and by the door being opened occasionally, which is why a bedroom in a lived-in home does eventually take on the character of the house. But over the ninety minutes between switching a machine on and a buyer walking through, the exchange is negligible. Practically, treat a closed internal door as a wall with a hinge. It is not a restriction to be overcome with a higher setting; a higher setting only makes the room the machine is standing in stronger.
3
The viewing
Why this matters far more in a property you are showing
Brokers close bedroom doors, and there are good reasons for it: the room is tidy and you want it to stay tidy, the owner has left things out, you are controlling the route, or a room is being used for storage that nobody needs to see. Then the buyer walks in, the hall and living room smell considered, they open a bedroom door themselves - which they will, because that is what a viewing is - and the room behind it smells of a closed room. Wardrobe, mattress, still air, sometimes the attached bathroom's floor trap. The contrast is what does the damage, because it is more noticeable than either state on its own, and it teaches the buyer that the pleasant part of the flat was arranged for them. The over-dosing half of the problem is quieter but just as real. If you sized and set a machine for a 566m³ flat and it is actually working on about 363m³ of connected air, the front of the property is running roughly fifty per cent above the level you chose, and a strongly scented living room in a home for sale is read by buyers as a cover-up - which is the one impression this entire section exists to help you avoid. Two honest fixes. Open every internal door an hour before, which turns the flat back into the volume you sized for, equalises temperature between rooms and lets the closed-room smell clear; then close only what genuinely must be closed, at the last minute, so the room keeps air it has already received. Or accept that the bedrooms are a separate job: a reed diffuser from ₹749 on a bedside table, placed several days ahead rather than on the morning, needs no socket and no set-up and is working on every day you are not there. Do not, ever, put a room-scale machine into a bedroom and shut the door - a 240 sq ft bedroom at 10 ft is 2,400 cu ft, which is 2,400 / 35.3 = about 68m³, and a machine rated to roughly 1000 will overwhelm it in minutes.
Tip: open the doors an hour ahead, then close only what must be closed, at the last minute - the room keeps the air it already received.
The SOSA principle
A closed door does not slow a diffuser down. It divides your property into two problems - one room over-scented, another untouched - and no coverage rating on any box has ever described that.
One connected volume of air is the assumption under every figure in this industry. In a property being shown, that assumption is usually false by lunchtime.

The SOSA commercial edit
Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Can I not just turn the machine up to push scent under the doors?
No, and it makes the property worse in the process. The undercut of a closed door is roughly one two-hundredth of the open aperture and sits at floor level in the least mobile air in the room, so raising the output does not meaningfully increase what crosses it. What it does increase, immediately and noticeably, is the concentration in the room the machine is standing in - which is usually the living room, which is where the buyer forms their impression. You end up with a strongly scented living room and bedrooms that still smell of nothing, which is the worst available combination in a viewing: a buyer who walks into a strongly perfumed home starts wondering what is being covered, and then finds a closed bedroom that smells stale. Open the doors instead. It is free.
How long before the viewing should I open the internal doors?
About an hour, at the same time as you start the machine, and preferably longer in a property that has been shut for days. Opening the doors does three things at once: it reconnects the flat into the single volume your sizing assumed, it lets temperature equalise between rooms, which is what starts air moving in the first place, and it clears the specific closed-room quality bedrooms develop when nobody has been in them. If the flat has been locked for a week, open the doors and the windows for as long as you can afford before the appointment and shut the windows in the last half hour, so the property is aired but not still carrying street air, traffic or dust. There is a separate page in this section on preparing a property that has been locked up all week.
If I have to keep a room closed, should I still put something in it?
Yes, and keep it small. A reed diffuser from Rs 749 on a bedside table or a bathroom counter is the standard answer, placed several days before the first viewing rather than on the morning, because reeds need time to draw up and open out. A closed 240 sq ft bedroom is about 68 cubic metres of air, which is a small space, and small spaces need small devices: if there is a socket and the room is genuinely large, a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 with a Hotel Collection register from Rs 299 is proportionate. What is not proportionate is standing a machine rated to roughly 1000 cubic metres inside a bedroom and closing the door, which will produce exactly the strong, obviously-scented room that makes a buyer suspicious. Keep the register the same as the rest of the property so the flat reads as one place rather than as a series of scented rooms.
Does an open plan flat solve the problem?
It solves most of it, which is why open-plan properties are genuinely easier to present. A flat where the entrance, living, dining and kitchen are one space gives you a large connected volume that a single machine can distribute through on natural airflow, and the arithmetic you did actually describes the property. What survives even in an open plan is everything behind a door: bedrooms, bathrooms, a study, the utility and servant's room behind the kitchen, and a store. Those still need either an open door or their own small answer. The other thing to watch in open-plan homes is the balcony or terrace door, which if left open is not an extension of the volume but a hole in it - open air takes fragrance away and gives nothing back, so decide before the viewing whether that door is open for the view or closed for the air.
Should the bedrooms smell the same as the rest of the property?
Same register, quieter. A property that presents as one considered place is the aim, and two different fragrances within twenty feet of each other collide rather than layer, which a buyer notices even if they cannot name what is wrong. So use the same register throughout - the Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar is the safest default for an aspirational home - and let the bedrooms sit a notch below the living areas, because they are smaller volumes and because a bedroom is the room a buyer is most likely to stand still in and breathe properly. Bathrooms are the one place where a small, separate reed is normal and expected, and nobody experiences that as a second fragrance. The registers are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint.
