Low, inward and out of two airstreams: out of the entrance airstream, and out of the throw of any supply grille. That is the placement answer, and I will spend most of this page defending it - but before placement there is a count question, and it is the one I would rather you heard from me than discovered after the joinery was fixed.

Run the arithmetic on your own building. Floor area multiplied by ceiling height gives cubic feet, and cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres. 3,000 sq ft at a 12 ft ceiling is 36,000 cubic feet, about 1,020 cubic metres. At 16 ft it is 48,000 cubic feet, about 1,360 cubic metres. At 20 ft it is 60,000 cubic feet, about 1,700 cubic metres. You told me you have high ceilings, so you are somewhere in the upper half of that range. A SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is published for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected air. Which means that at a real high ceiling, a 3,000 sq ft store is at or past one machine before anybody has discussed where to stand it.

That is not a sales line and it does not resolve into a bigger setting. Turning one unit up in a 1,700 cubic metre volume does not produce even distribution; it produces a loud patch near the unit and the same faint nothing at the far end, plus a room that a client at a tray can name. The honest answer to even distribution in a volume this size is more than one point of origin at a low level, placed by geometry - or a smaller connected volume, which in a multi-brand store you often already have if there is a doored viewing room, a mezzanine or a boutique-within-the-boutique.

Everything below is written for a store like yours: big, tall, air conditioned, and carrying several brands rather than one. That last fact has a scenting consequence of its own, and it is the reason the register question at the bottom of this page is narrower than it would be for a mono-brand room. Can I duct it into the building's air conditioning instead? Only into plant you actually own and control. A coverage rating assumes one connected body of air. An open storefront is the hardest room in retail to hold, because the mall's air is being exchanged into yours all day - which is a placement question before it is a bigger-machine question.
Straight answer
I have 3,000 sq ft, central AC and high ceilings. Where do the machines go?
Low and inward, in the circulating middle of the room rather than at its edges, out of the entrance airstream and out of any supply airstream - and there is very likely more than one of them, because your ceiling height has already decided that.

Take the count first, because it changes the placement plan rather than sitting beside it. A coverage rating assumes one connected body of air, and your 3,000 sq ft is a single connected body unless a door somewhere stays shut. At 12 ft that is 3,000 x 12 = 36,000 cubic feet, and 36,000 divided by 35.3 is about 1,020 cubic metres. At 16 ft it is 48,000 cubic feet, about 1,360 cubic metres. At 20 ft it is 60,000 cubic feet, about 1,700 cubic metres. The Vaayu is published for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected air. So even at the lowest ceiling you named as high, one unit is at its published limit with the whole store leaning on it, and at 16 or 20 ft it is carrying a third to two thirds more air than it is rated for. The instinct at that point is to raise the setting. Do not. A raised setting in an oversized volume does not distribute; it concentrates. You get a metre and a half of obvious fragrance around the unit, an unchanged far corner, and a naming failure in the one place you could least afford one.

So the real structure of the answer is: decide the number of origins, then decide where each one stands, then check there is a socket there. Two units at a low level in a 1,360 cubic metre floor give you a gentler gradient than one unit at a high level ever will, because distribution in a room is a function of how many places the scent starts from and how the air is already moving, not of how hard any single machine is working.

Now the airstreams, which is where most installations go wrong. Your store has two air systems and they do different things to a diffuser. The first is the entrance: a door opening every ninety seconds, or an open mall front with no door at all, is a continuous exchange, and a unit inside that stream is being emptied into the concourse all day. Move it inward. Use the depth of the store - the back holds what the front never will - and accept a gradient from threshold to tray rather than trying to abolish one. The second is the central AC: supply grilles throw conditioned air across the room at speed, and a unit sitting in that throw has its output picked up and dispersed to nothing before it reaches anybody's height. That is the single most common siting error in an air-conditioned store, and it produces the complaint I hear most often, which is that the machine seems to be doing nothing at all.

The opposite error is just as real and less obvious. A unit tucked into a still corner, behind a display wall, in a niche with no circulation, never leaves that niche. It reads beautifully from two feet away and does not exist from ten. What you are actually looking for is neither the jet nor the dead air: the gentle circulating middle of the room, where the AC is moving air but not throwing it, ideally a third to halfway into the depth of the store from the entrance.

Then height, and this is where a high ceiling changes the rule rather than just the arithmetic. The temptation in a 20 ft room is to mount high, because it looks tidy and the cable disappears into the ceiling detail. But the part of that 1,700 cubic metres a human being actually occupies is the bottom six feet. Everything above is volume you are paying to scent and nobody is standing in. Mount at roughly standing head height or below - shelf height, a low joinery return, the top of a plinth - and you are putting the output into the layer that matters.

Two constraints that are not negotiable and are easy to forget at drawing stage. First, ordinary retail prudence: no unit above or beside open display trays, stock storage or the watchmaker's bench. That is a statement about where a device goes in a shop, in the same way you would not put a sprinkler test valve over a tray, and it is not a claim of any kind about fragrance and watches, movements, straps, cases or stock in either direction. Second, power: the Vaayu runs on DC 12V / 1A at 5W and is mains powered, freestanding (it lays flat) or wall and HVAC mountable. A live socket at the point you have chosen is a real siting constraint, and the cheapest time in the life of a store to add one is while the joinery drawings are still open. The one-line version: a third of the way into the store, at head height or below, where the air is moving gently and no grille is throwing at it - and if you have a high ceiling, plan for two origins rather than one loud one.

The word in your question I want to push back on gently is even. There is no such thing as even distribution in a 3,000 sq ft room with a public door in it, and chasing it is how stores end up over-scented. Air in a retail space is not a still tank that fills uniformly; it is a slow-moving system with a supply, a return, a threshold and forty people walking through it. What you can actually achieve is a gentle gradient: strongest in the middle third where your seating and your trays are, present but light at the back, and almost nothing at the threshold. That last part is not a defect. A threshold reading close to nothing is what a correctly set store smells like from the pavement, and it is what you should expect on the way in.

Here is the test I would run on your own floor before you buy anything, and it costs nothing. Take a stick of incense or a single lit candle - anything that makes visible smoke - and stand it at each of your three candidate positions on a normal trading morning with the AC running. Watch where the smoke goes. If it is snatched sideways and gone, you are in a supply throw. If it climbs straight up and vanishes into a ceiling return, you are under a return path. If it hangs and drifts slowly outward across the room at chest height, that is your position. Ten minutes of that tells you more than any coverage chart, because it is your building rather than an average one.

One more thing about central AC, because it cuts both ways and boutique owners usually only hear one half of it. Recirculating conditioned air is genuinely helpful for distribution - it is the thing that carries a low-level register from the middle of the store to the back without you having to raise anything. It is also the reason an air-conditioned store develops its own closed-up character over a long day, and that is a source, ventilation and cleaning question rather than a fragrance one. Fragrance adds scent. It does not remove odour, and no register laid over a tired air handling system cancels it - it makes a third smell. Order is always source, then ventilation, then cleaning, then fragrance. And never, in any phrasing, reduce ventilation or air exchange so that a fragrance lasts longer. A well-ventilated store is harder to scent, and that is a trade you accept rather than a problem you solve.

Your 3,000 sq ft, the arithmetic done by hand, and the five placement rules that follow

There are three things that decide machine position in a store your size, and none of them is the machine. The first is how much connected air you actually have, which decides how many origins you need before you decide where any of them go. The second is where your building is already moving air - the entrance, the supply grilles, the returns - because a diffuser does not push scent around a room so much as hand it to the air that is already circulating. The third is height, which in a high-ceilinged store is a bigger variable than anything else on the drawing and is almost always got wrong in the same direction.

What does not decide it: the setting number. I want to be blunt about that, because the setting dial is the thing an owner reaches for when distribution is uneven, and it is the wrong control. Setting changes how much is emitted at one point. It does not change where that point is or where the air takes it. If the far corner of your store is unscented, turning the unit up makes the near corner worse without making the far corner better. Distribution is a placement and origin-count problem, and it has a placement and origin-count answer.

It is worth being precise about what a 3,000 sq ft multi-brand store actually is, physically, because it behaves unlike a small mono-brand boutique in four ways. It is tall, which multiplies the volume without adding any customer space. It is hard - glass, stone, metal, lacquer, mirror - and hard surfaces absorb almost nothing, which means more of what you add stays audible and your setting comes down rather than up. It is usually compartmented to some degree, with brand bays, a mezzanine, a doored viewing room or two and a service counter, and every door that stays shut ends one connected body of air and begins another. And it has a great deal of traffic through the threshold, which is a continuous exchange with whatever is outside.

Those four facts will decide the outcome more than any choice you make about register. So this page spends its first two thirds on air and geometry, and gets to the bottle late, which is the correct order for a store of this size.

One assumption stated plainly, because the whole page rests on it: I have assumed your 3,000 sq ft is one connected floor. If it is not - if there is a doored viewing room, a sealed collector lounge, a mezzanine that shuts off, or a service area behind a door that stays closed - then you do not have a 1,360 cubic metre problem. You have a smaller connected floor plus one or two small volumes, each of which is its own much easier question, and the total machine count may well come down rather than up. Measure the connected part, not the lease area.

Now set that against what SOSA actually publishes, which is the only number this page is allowed to use. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated for approximately 1000 cubic metres of connected air. SOSA's own copy also states 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft scented evenly, and it is worth understanding why those two figures can both be true and why the cubic metre one is the one to trust in your building. A floor-area figure carries a hidden ceiling assumption inside it. 3,000 sq ft at an ordinary 10 to 11 ft ceiling is 30,000 to 33,000 cubic feet, about 850 to 935 cubic metres, which sits comfortably inside 1000. The same 3,000 sq ft at 16 ft does not. You have told me you have high ceilings, so the square-foot figure is the wrong one for you and the cubic metre figure is the right one.

The honest finding, then: at a real high ceiling a 3,000 sq ft store is at or past one Vaayu's published connected volume. That is not a reason to be disappointed in the machine, which is doing exactly what it says. It is a reason to plan two points of origin at a low level rather than one point of origin turned up, and it is much better to discover that now than in month three when somebody is standing in the far corner wondering why the far corner smells of nothing.

There are three legitimate ways out of this and one illegitimate one. The legitimate ones: add a second origin and run both low, which gives you a gentler gradient than any single unit can; reduce the connected volume by treating a doored viewing room, a mezzanine or a sealed brand bay as its own separate small volume with its own small machine, which is often what a multi-brand store already is if you look at the drawing honestly; or duct, using Aangan at ₹25,999 or Meenar at ₹38,500 into plant you own and control, which is a real answer for a building with its own dedicated air handling and a contractor who owns it. The illegitimate one is turning one unit up and hoping. That produces a loud zone, an untouched zone, and a customer who can name what the room smells of, which in this trade is the definition of failure.

One last arithmetic note that saves people money. If a doored private viewing room in your store is 150 sq ft at a 10 ft ceiling, that is 1,500 cubic feet, about 43 cubic metres. Forty-three, against your floor's thirteen hundred. The placement rules
Out of the entrance airstream, out of the supply airstream, and out of the dead corner
Here are the rules in the order I would apply them walking your floor with the drawing.

Rule one: out of the entrance airstream. The threshold of a 3,000 sq ft store is a continuous air exchange whether it has a door or not. A mall front with no door is exchanging with the concourse all day; a door on a busy Saturday opens often enough to amount to the same thing. A unit inside that stream has its output picked up and carried out before the room ever gets it, and the owner's reading of the situation is that the machine is weak. It is not weak. It is standing in a river. Move it inward - a third to halfway into the depth of the store is the zone I would look at first - and use the depth of the plan. The back of a deep store holds what the front cannot. What you are buying with that move is not more scent; it is scent that stays long enough to reach somebody.

Rule two: out of the supply airstream. This is the one that is specific to your central AC and it is the most commonly missed. A supply grille throws conditioned air at speed. A diffuser sitting in that throw has its output taken away and thinned out to nothing before it reaches head height anywhere useful. It is the fastest way to make a good machine look broken. Find your supply grilles on the drawing - or with the smoke test - and stay out of their throw. This is different from saying stay away from the air conditioning entirely: you want the general circulation, you do not want the jet.

Rule three: out of the dead corner. The mirror-image error. A unit in a niche behind a display wall, in a stairwell corner, in a recess with no air movement at all, never leaves. It reads strongly at two feet and is absent at ten, and somebody eventually raises the setting to compensate, which makes the two-foot reading unbearable and the ten-foot reading unchanged. What you want is the gentle circulating middle of the room: air that is moving, but not being thrown.

Rule four: low and inward rather than high. In a 12 ft room this barely matters. In a 20 ft room it is the whole game. Of your 1,700 cubic metres, the part any human being occupies is the bottom six feet - about 3,000 x 6 = 18,000 cubic feet, roughly 510 cubic metres, or less than a third of the total. Mount the unit near the ceiling and you are putting output into the two thirds that nobody stands in and asking it to find its way down, which air does slowly and reluctantly if at all. Mount at standing head height or below - on a low joinery return, the top of a plinth, a shelf at about five to six feet, freestanding on a console - and the output starts where the people are. The Vaayu is published as freestanding (it lays flat) or wall and HVAC mountable, so both options are genuinely available to you; the joinery drawing is where you choose between them.

Rule five: never above or beside open display trays, stock storage or the workshop bench. This is ordinary retail prudence about where a device belongs in a shop, and it is worth writing on the drawing as an exclusion zone rather than leaving to somebody's judgement on installation day. It is not, and must not be read as, any claim about fragrance and watches, movements, dials, straps, cases or stock - SOSA makes no protection claim and no harm claim in either direction. It is simply that a bench, a tray and a stockroom are not where a diffuser goes, in the same way they are not where you put a water cooler.

And the sixth thing, which is not a rule but a constraint that quietly overrides all five if you let it: the socket. The Vaayu is DC 12V / 1A, 5W and mains powered. Every installation I have seen go wrong on position went wrong because the only free socket in the building was in a corridor, or beside the entrance, or under a supply grille, and the machine went where the power was rather than where the room needed it. Mark your three candidate positions on the electrical drawing while the joinery is still being detailed. A socket at drawing stage costs almost nothing. A socket cut into finished stone costs a weekend and an apology.

One thing to rule out explicitly, because large-store owners ask it and the answer needs to be unambiguous: do not introduce anything into a shared air handler serving other tenants, and do not ask anybody to alter mall air handling. It is not yours, it serves people who did not agree to it, and it is outside what this page will recommend under any circumstances. Ducted scenting is a real option only where the plant is yours and your own contractor owns it.

The multi-brand variable
Even distribution, the gradient you will actually get, and the register a shared floor can carry
Two things left, and the first is a redefinition of your goal.

Even is the wrong target; gentle is the right one. A 3,000 sq ft room with a public threshold, a central AC system and a stream of people through it will never be uniform, and a plan that requires uniformity will always be read as a failure. What a good plan delivers is a gradient with the strong part in the right place. Map it deliberately: threshold almost nothing, front third light, middle third - where your seating, your consultation tables and your trays are - at the level you actually specified, back third light again unless there is a second origin there. Then judge the store from the chair in the middle third, at minute forty-five of a long appointment, because that is the only reading that decides whether the specification was right.

This is also where the high ceiling gives something back. Tall volumes are slower and steadier than short ones. A 20 ft room does not spike the way a 9 ft room does when the door opens, because there is a great deal of air above head height acting as a buffer. The trade is that it takes longer to establish in the morning, which is an argument for the timer rather than for a higher setting: the Vaayu's Bluetooth app and timer let you start the room before the doors open and stop it when they close, so the floor is right for the first appointment and the machine is not running at three in the morning into a locked store.

Now the multi-brand question, which is a real variable and not a naming exercise. In a multi-brand store, the register in the air is one of the very few things on the floor that is yours. The cases, the displays, the collateral and the visual language of each bay belong to the brands you carry and are largely specified by them. The air is not. That is an opportunity and a responsibility at the same time, and it points at a narrower answer than a mono-brand room would need: the register has to be neutral enough not to argue with any brand's own identity, because a customer walking from one bay to the next should not feel that the room is taking sides. A characterful, signed, obviously-authored fragrance in a multi-brand hall reads as the retailer competing with its own tenants. A quiet, dry, unsigned one reads as the building.

Finally, the limit on why you are doing any of this, stated plainly because in a store where the trays carry serious money it is the claim my industry is most tempted to inflate. I will not tell you that a scent sells watches. What ambient scent research supports is improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell and stronger recall, at moderate effect sizes. Nothing about conversion, transaction value, footfall or spend, in any phrasing. That is the ceiling this page works under, and a well-placed, low, consistent register is worth ₹11,999 on exactly those terms and no others.
Tip: Judge the store from the chair in the middle third at minute forty-five, never from the doorway at minute one. The doorway is the reading that lies to you.

How to position scent machines in a large, high-ceilinged watch store
  1. Do the volume by hand first - area x height / 35.3 - and decide how many origins.
  2. Smoke-test three candidate positions with the AC running before you fix anything.
  3. Place low and inward, out of the entrance stream, out of any supply throw.
  4. Mark the sockets on the electrical drawing while the joinery is still open.
The SOSA principle
Setting is the wrong control for a distribution problem. A dial changes how much is emitted at one point; it does not change where that point is, or where the air takes it. If the far end of your floor reads as nothing, raising the unit makes the near end worse and leaves the far end exactly where it was - and somewhere in between, a customer at a tray has just been given something they can name.
The research ceiling, stated because a store this size attracts the biggest claims. Ambient scent is associated with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell and stronger recall, at moderate effect sizes. That is the whole of it. No claim is made here about sales, conversion, average transaction value, willingness to pay, footfall or repeat purchase, and none about what a fragrance does to a person - no mood, no decision, no internal state. The register for a multi-brand floor, and the level that survives a high ceiling

The register question is smaller than the placement question and I would like you to treat it that way, but a multi-brand floor does narrow it usefully.

There are seven registers in the water-based Hotel Collection, each SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretation - SOSA is independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any hotel brand. For a large, hard-surfaced, multi-brand hall the steer is: dry, cool, unsweet and unsigned. Quiet Luxury - white tea, bergamot and cedar - is the default I would run if you gave me your plan and no other information; it is hushed and polished and neutral enough that it does not appear to be making an argument on any brand's behalf. White Tea Serenity - white tea, aloe and cedar - is the answer for a pale, glassy, stone-and-daylight hall, and it is the register that most naturally reads as clean rather than as scented, which in a big room is the difference between a building and a shop. Forest Suite - cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves - is the one that reads most clearly as structural rather than decorative, and in a hall where a hundred strangers a day pass through, structural is received as part of the architecture rather than as somebody's choice. Old-World Glamour - amber, violet and woods - belongs only if the hall is genuinely heritage in language, dark timber and brass and deep carpet, and it is held lower than any of the others because plush accumulates over a long sit in a way that dry does not.

The three I would leave out of a multi-brand hall, and the reason is the room rather than the blend. Lobby Bar - citrus, pepper and amber - is bold and after-dark, and a theatrical register turned down is a quiet theatrical register rather than an appropriate one. Tea Garden - jasmine, green tea and white tea - is the least risky floral in the collection and still reads as a choice somebody made, which is exactly what you want to avoid in a space where the choices are supposed to belong to the brands in the bays. Warm Welcome - citrus, floral and sandalwood - is a fine hotel threshold and the start of the sweetness problem in retail, and sweetness is the characteristic that makes a hall read as a shop.

And a note on hard surfaces that matters more in your store than in a small one. Glass, stone, metal, mirror and lacquer absorb almost nothing, so a hard 1,360 cubic metre hall holds more of what you add than a carpeted 1,360 cubic metre room would. The setting therefore goes down, not up, even though the volume is large. Those two facts pull in opposite directions and people usually only feel the first one. Two low origins in a hard hall is a better specification than one high origin, on both counts at once.

What I will not do is rank the seven against each other on measured throw or longevity. SOSA does not publish that comparison, it would not survive contact with your particular ceiling height and air handling even if it did, and the variables that dominate - connected volume, height, ventilation rate, threshold type, surface hardness and the setting - are all yours rather than the blend's.

The middle third, at head height · the target A third to halfway into the depth of the store, mounted at standing head height or below, in air that is circulating gently rather than being thrown. This is where your seating and your trays are, and it is the only reading that decides whether the specification was right. Judge it from the chair at minute forty-five, not from the door.
Inside the entrance airstream · the river A unit near an open front or a busy door has its output carried straight back out into the concourse all day. The owner reads this as a weak machine and raises the setting, which empties faster. The fix is geometry - move inward, use the depth of the plan, and accept an almost imperceptible threshold as correct.
Under a supply grille · the jet A supply airstream picks the output up and thins it to nothing before it reaches anybody's height. The commonest siting error in an air-conditioned store and the one that makes a good machine look broken. Find the grilles on the drawing or with a smoke test and stay out of their throw - the general circulation is what you want, not the jet.
A dead corner, or high on a 20 ft wall · the two ways to disappear A niche with no air movement never reaches the floor, and a unit mounted near a high ceiling is emitting into the two thirds of the volume nobody occupies. Both read as absence and both tempt somebody into raising the level. Bottom six feet, moving air, gentle circulation. And never above or beside open trays, stock storage or a bench - ordinary retail prudence.

So the buying shape for a store like yours. To take this further in the directions your question opens up: if you run more than one store and the settings differ site to site, that is how climate, mall HVAC, open storefronts and store size should change your settings. If this is one of several boutiques and you need the whole thing written down so it survives a manager change, that is standardising signature fragrance, intensity, placement, refills and staff SOPs across a chain. And if the store is still at drawing stage, the placement question belongs inside a bigger sequence - HVAC, apertures, materials, lighting, dwell and VIP rooms first - which is planning a luxury watch boutique from scratch.

The SOSA scenting range

SOSA sells two different systems and one of the commonest mistakes is mixing them up. Size by the connected air volume of the room you are actually scenting - which in a boutique means the connected retail floor plus any viewing room that has a door of its own - floor area multiplied by ceiling height gives cubic feet, and cubic feet divided by 35.3 gives cubic metres. A door that stays shut ends one volume and begins another.

A watch boutique is a room where somebody sits down for an hour and a half to make a decision worth more than most people's cars. That is the fact that should govern everything about the air in it. Not the doorway, not the first impression, not the ten seconds a passer-by gets - the ninety minutes. A level that is lovely at minute one is tiring at minute sixty, and tiring is the last thing you want in the room where the tray comes out.

So my advice to every boutique owner is the same and it is slightly annoying: go lower than you want to. In luxury retail the tell is not that a room smells of nothing; it is that a customer can name what it smells of. The moment somebody can say "oh, that's a fragrance", the room has stopped being a place and started being a display, and a display is exactly what a serious buyer is trying to see past.

Two other honest things. Fragrance adds scent - it never subtracts one - so if the store has a source problem, a leather smell that has gone sour, a stale morning, a workshop bench that vents into the floor, no bottle solves it; air and cleaning do. And I will not tell you that a scent sells watches. Nobody honestly can. What a held, quiet, consistent room does is make a boutique easier to be in for ninety minutes and easier to recognise the second time - and in this trade that is worth having on its own terms.

Is one diffuser enough for a 3,000 sq ft store?
Do the arithmetic. 3,000 sq ft at 12 ft is 36,000 cubic feet or about 1,020 cubic metres; at 16 ft it is 48,000 cubic feet or about 1,360; at 20 ft it is 60,000 cubic feet or about 1,700. At a genuinely high ceiling you are at or past one unit, so the answer is a second point of origin at a low level, or a smaller connected volume, rather than one machine turned up.
Should a diffuser be mounted high up in a store with high ceilings?
No, low. In a 20 ft room the part of the volume a customer actually occupies is the bottom six feet, and a unit mounted near the ceiling is emitting into the two thirds of the air that nobody stands in. Mount at roughly head height or below - a low joinery return, the top of a plinth, a shelf at five or six feet, or freestanding on a console. The Vaayu is published freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, so both options are available.
Can I connect a scent machine to my mall building's air conditioning?
Not to a shared air handler you do not control, and never by altering mall air handling. Why does my store smell of the fragrance near the machine and of nothing at the back?
Because distribution is a placement and origin-count problem and the setting dial is the wrong control for it. Raising the unit makes the near zone worse without improving the far zone. Check whether the unit is sitting in a supply airstream or in a dead corner, move it into the gently circulating middle third at head height, and if the connected volume is larger than one machine is published for, add a second low origin rather than raising the first.
