When must I replace it? Only when the plate will not mist even after a thorough vinegar descale, or when the unit is cracked, leaking or physically damaged.
What if mine just stopped? Descale it first. A weak or dead mist is nearly always mineral scale or oil residue on the plate, not end of life. Cleaning revives most units.
Signs it is time (and when it isn't)
I would rather talk you out of replacing a diffuser than into it. Most units that people give up on are perfectly alive - they have just never been descaled. So let me separate the real end-of-life signs from the false alarms.
The false alarm: weak or no mist. This is what makes people reach for a new one, and it is almost always mineral scale or oil residue on the plate. Run a proper descale first - diluted white vinegar, a soft wipe, a good rinse. In the large majority of cases the mist comes right back. Only if it stays dead after a real clean is the plate itself likely gone.
Reality: lifespan is about care, not calendar. Rinse the tank, descale weekly, and use water-based fragrance only, and a good cool-mist unit runs for years. Neglect it, or run raw oils through it, and even a great one struggles.
The real signs. If the plate will not mist after a full descale, if the housing is cracked or leaking, or if the electronics have plainly failed, then yes - it is time. Physical damage is not something cleaning can fix.
The single fastest way to shorten a diffuser's life is to put raw essential or carrier oils in it. They leave a film the plate cannot atomise, and over time that film clogs and can damage the unit. Water-based SOSA fragrance is formulated to mist cleanly - it is the difference between a diffuser that lasts years and one that dies in a season.
Care, lifespan and SOSA support
Lifespan really does come down to three simple habits. Get these right and replacement is a distant worry.
| Habit | Why it extends life |
|---|---|
| Rinse every couple of days | Stops residue and stale water building up. |
| Descale weekly (white vinegar) | Clears the mineral scale that strangles the mist. |
| Water-based fragrance only | No thick oil film to clog and damage the plate. |
| Filtered / RO water, never hot | Less scale, no heat stress on components. |
On our side: every SOSA diffuser ships from Pune within 24 hours, and if it arrives damaged in transit we replace it - just flag it within 48 hours of delivery, ideally with a photo, and we sort it out. That is our responsibility, not yours. For anything else, our support is there to help you troubleshoot before you ever think about buying again.
So the honest bottom line: a diffuser is a long-term buy, not a disposable one. Treat it well and it will scent your rooms for years. Replace it only when a real fault or real damage leaves you no choice.

Versailles
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.
They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.
One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.
